Where's a Red Pen When You Need It?

I hope Jodie takes some time off from her stressful day to appreciate the irony of a misspelled poster about dyslexia, especially because it's World Dyslexia Awareness Day. There has been some fandom speculation about whether or not Kevin is dyslexic, although I suspect his intellectual problems run much deeper than any learning disability.

I don't think it would be wise for Jake to recreate the Great Chicago Fire, which began on this day in 1871, in the Morgendorffer kitchen. I don't care if Helen hid the mop again; the milk will taste just as good cold. If he really must warm it up, I might recommend the microwave.

Although there were no explicitly stated lesbians in Daria (Alison, being bisexual, doesn't count), I think we can celebrate International Lesbian Day all the same because fanfiction more than made up the difference. I can't say I'm surprised about it--with the shortage of decent guys in the show, shippers have to do what they can!

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 44 and 45): "Camp Grizzly was quite probably the most famous Summer camp in all of Pennsylvania." (Part 45)

  • Homecoming, by davidfalkayn (part 32): "'Who was that on phone, Dear?' Mrs. Ruttheimer asked as she came out of the kitchen. 'That was Brittany, Mom.' Charles answered, 'She’s coming by in an hour to pick me up to catch a movie and then listen to some music. Jenn and her group are playing tonight.'"

  • Parting Gift, by remi (part 10): "'Very well, Quinn. I am surprised that you would want to defend Daria after what she did, but we are listening. What do you have to say in her defense?'"

  • Sixteenth Doctor Adventures (Chapter 1), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "After the TARDIS had landed, Xander got off the floor. ‘He’s taking this rather well. Much like others I have travelled with, in my previous incarnations,’ the Doctor thought."

  • Spider Quinn 12 Rise of the Green Goblin, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "In the bathroom, Daria looked in the mirror. She saw herself and Quinn, two sisters who were more alike than she would have expected before her father passed."

Did This Fire Lead to Any Love Triangles?

Daria's observing the start of the Great Chicago Fire, which started on this day in 1871. Legend has it that the fire was started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow, but I wouldn't be surprised if paper towels over an open flame had something to do with it...Jake.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 34): "The phone of Casa Lane rang around about midnight. Fortunately, it was a night when people were still awake being creative, rather than sleeping like the boring people who counted as normative members of society."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by EntrancedCat, Roentgen, and Meester_Lee (parts 34 - 36): "Your Humble Narrator would be lying, O My Dear Brothers, if I gavoreeted that I ponied where I lay as I sat up and viddied about for some clue and for my droogs to pop up, guff and smeck at the fast trick on their dear leader." (Part 35 by Roentgen) (Part 36 by Meester_Lee)

  • Decisions, by elainefr (part 8): "Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse...so this is adultery...I'm supposed to feel guilty about this, but I don't."

  • Fairyland its a Hell of a Place, by Kuriamo22 (part 1): "It's a beautiful morning in Wonderland. The sun smiles as he rises in the east bathing this majestic and fantastic land in light. From Mount Flub flub in the east to the gumdrop plains in the west."

  • Reclaiming the Fire, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "Groans and grunts echoed against the hallways. Lockers slammed. Shoes lazily slid against the linoleum floor. Student life sluggishly reentered Lawndale High School."

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!

I am reliably informed that MTV's Daria DVD set will magically appear in stores on May 11th of this year. That is 91 days from now. (Or 13 weeks.) Start saving your pennies!

And wouldn't you know that today is also National Pizza Pie Day? Oddly, the only place that celebrates this date is Chicago, which shows up hugely on Google when you search for the holiday. Enjoy your pizza, even if everyone else hates it. Take their pieces if they feel that way about it. Pig out!

Suddenly have 23 followers. Hey, thanks! Hope this is fun for everyone. Anything in particular you all want to see here? Story updates, yes, but anything else?

T-t-t-twenty Minutes into the F-f-future

This day is of course known for the JFK assassination in 1963, which I remember as a third grader, but it is also known for a peculiar event called the Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion incident. That was 22 years ago, when someone wearing a Max Headroom mask (at left) used powerful transmission equipment to interrupt normal TV transmissions in Chicago, Illinois. Max Headroom (a "real" photo of which is at right) appeared in a Daria fanfic by Ruthless Bunny, the title of which is borrowed from the original movie in which Max appeared.

Interesting: Here is a webpage detailing efforts to get various TV shows on DVD, and both Daria and the Max Headroom TV show from the late 1980s are on it!

More Interesting: The BBC's Channel 4 created a series of ads two years ago using Max Headroom to promote the switch to digital TV. The result was one of the most hysterically funny ads ever shown on TV. You have to see this. Also, Max Headroom's music video and Max Headroom's advice for macho guys.

NEWZ
  • Richard Lobinske has updated the 2009 Daria Visual Fanworks list! Hooray!
  • NEW! The earliest Daria story on FanFiction.net was posted 11 years ago today: Paperpusher's "Her, Uh, Cane." It was also 11 years ago at this time that one of the earliest and most extensive Daria supersites, Planet Daria, was taken offline.
  • NEW! Tommy Sherman, by some esoteric mathematical figuring, won the state championship in football for Lawndale High about 15 years ago.
  • NEW! The last story in Kara Wild's Driven Wild Universe was completed about this time four years ago: "Tomorrow Never Knows."
PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 16: Ambrosia Vinaigrette, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): "Daria, did anything interesting happen at school today?” “I wasn’t invited to anything, no one asked me on a date, I’m getting a cold sore, and I think someone threw a Life Saver at me.” “Oh, that’s horrible! Finn, what about you?” “I blew off my date with Ashley Beaker tonight to do this work, I’ve got two parties and four dates come the weekend, and I need to master these...tactics before my birthday next week. And today, someone actually gave me Life Savers.”

Stay tooned.
