Hi-Yo, Mack Daddy!

On this day in 1933, the Lone Ranger made his first appearance on a radio show. He would later get a television series, as well. The character didn't exactly look like Mack there, but I could definitely see him taking down bad guys. Or just Kevin whenever he pisses him off.

Today was also the day of the school review meeting in the episode "Fizz Ed," but shhh--don't tell anyone!

I should also mention that one year ago today, Daria made a cameo appearance on the TV show Robot Chicken. I think the less said about that one, though, the better.

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads... (Chapter 5), by oni (part 1): "Judy came to the door and opened it, revealing Sandi on the other side. 'Hi Sandi, you’re here pretty early,' the mother said. Trying to put on her best smile, Sandi replied, 'I know. I just thought I’d get a head start on the day.'"

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 5, by DeacBlue (parts 6 and 7): "'The case of the United States versus Morgendorffer, Lane, and Burns, parties, come forward.' When they had seated themselves at the defense table, she briefly read over the particulars. 'Your clients are being charged with polygamy, Counselor,' she said to Bill Tweed. 'How do they plead?'" (Part 7)

  • Homeless Daria Episode 4: Cafe Dispossessedo, by RX-87 (part 4): "'So...' she sighed, turning to her friend, 'What do you suppose happens now?' 'Nothing good.' Daria moped, shaking her head, inwardly debating which prospect was more terrifying: prison, or her family being called."

  • Idiot or Savant :: After the Disaster, by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "Tiffany sat alone in her room, staring outside the window. The raindrops subtly fell on the panes of glass, speckling them with long-forgotten memories of the before time. Each drop that hit the window gave Tiffany an even more and more somber feeling as she stared at the absence of life outside."

  • Imaginary, by ThanatosRW (COMPLETE!): "I freeze for a moment as I see her on the edge of the crowd. I see her cold eyes staring at me, judging me, criticizing me, before she stomps off. If I had shown any reaction to her presence, no one picked up on it as they kept on yammering about superficial stuff like upcoming sales and garbage and an invitation to join something called the Fashion Club."

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (part 6): "John said, 'Do you need any help with dinner?' 'Thanks for asking, but I have this under control,' Helen said. 'It should be ready in about half an hour.' 'Cool, then,' John replied. Daria said, 'See you then, Mom,' as she and John left the kitchen. Helen watched them leave and smiled to herself. 'All three of them found something to do for the summer without any prodding. After all these years, I think I can call this a success.'"

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin’s Genie (Chapter 6), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "'If we stay next to each other, we can watch out for each other,' she said. 'Good point!' Stacy said. She stepped closer to Daria. 'But not too close,' Daria said. 'Please?' 'Fine.' 'Thank you!' Daria sighed."

  • A Mothers Love, by ash_blackfire (part 1): "Quinn started to cry into Jakes chest as they all gathered around the bed. Jake holding Quinn and Amy holding onto Daria and Amy and Jake holding each others hand. All comforting each other as they watched the one they all loved slowly fade away." (Part 2)

  • Quinn's Code 05: Morgendorffers vs. Amazon, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "'So, Daria, how was school?' Helen asked when she had finished handing out the lasagne. 'Let's see, the usual happened, and oh, yes, the Modelling Classes were mysteriously canceled,' Daria said with some disembling. Helen and Quinn exchanged a look. Daria noticed it.'You had something to do with it, didn't you?' 'Some things are meant to be mysterious, Daria,' Quinn said."

  • Quinn Spirit Detective, by Reven384 (parts 6 and 7): "'But if she’s a demon doesn’t that make her dangerous for Daria?' Quinn asked. 'We need to investigate,' Botan said, 'I know she’s a friend of your family, but we can’t trust her at her word.' 'There is no need for that,” Jane said surprising both of them, 'I’ll give you the answers you want.'" (Part 7)

  • Ring-a-Ling, by Doggieboy (part 5): "Cindy finished typing out a report of a property damage automobile accident and sipped from a cup of coffee when her phone rang. Automatically, she picked up the receiver, put it to her ear and said, 'Lawndale Police Department, Officer Lewis speaking.' There was a hesitation, then a woman’s voice said, 'I want to report some obscene phone calls.'"

  • The Skelton Girl, by oni (part 1): "'Students,' O’Neil begun in his over enthusiastic way, 'we have a new student among us, please meet Mandy Peterson.' He then turned the students’ attention to the goth girl at the front of the room."

  • Unnamed story (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by Grifter74 (COMPLETE!): "Camera rushes through the streets of MegaTokyo. In the back ground is the Genom Tower. The camera stops and zooms in on a club. The sign says Hot Legs. The camera goes inside. In a small room behind the stage, we see Daria dressed in a red leather skirt and bustier as she adjusts a blonde wig."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "'I accept your challenge, old man,' said a dark-haired young man, stepping forth from the crowd and strutting to the small fence. A quick jump later and he was inside the circle of fresh earth that the gardeners had used to plant the young tree near the crutch."

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (part 17): "Trent pointed out the remote control on the coffee table. 'Feel free to watch TV. I'm gonna head up and tell Daria to get the money in cash.' 'What do you have against me, Trent? You're acting like you don't like me. I don't get that very often.'"

A Rare Moment of Joy for Highland Daria

It was on this day in 1995 that the Beavis and Butt-Head episode "Wet Behind the Rears" aired on MTV. Daria has only a small appearance in this episode, but she does get to laugh uproariously at Beavis and Butt-head's misfortune. So a good day for our heroine, anyway.

This Cake Had Better Not Be a Lie!

Guess what, everyone! It's National Chocolate Cake Day! Quinn's getting into the spirit, and I can definitely say I'm right there with her. Chocolate cake for all! Unless you don't want any. In which case I call dibs on yours!

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known to the world as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. This is especially notable for fandom, as there have been several Daria crossovers with the books in fanfic.

I can recall Barry Eshkol Adelman's Daria in Wonderland and The Angst Guy's Wonderlane and Tiffany in Wonderland, but I'm probably forgetting some. If you know any more, please post them in the comments!

Fanfic Update!

  • ...And Then it Happened..., by Fhujeth_x (parts 1 and 2): "It was nothing more than your boring, tedious night filled with assorted blushes and shimmering lip gloss. Warm summer air blew through the open crack in the door bringing a little life in the room but still leaving it dry and dull with the feelings of a long forgotten school year." (Part 2)

  • The Apex of Angst, by OverlordMikey (part 2): "I consider calling my sisters, but it seems pointless. If I survive the surgery they'd never know I had it; if I died they‘d never notice I was gone."

  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 4c): "Understanding, Stacy grabbed hold of Sandi's slightly shaking hand for support. 'I know, but you also got to realize that just because your parent's reactions were bad, doesn't mean mine will.' Giving a small smile, Sandi said, 'You're right.' Sighing one last time, she added, 'Well, let's get this over with.'"

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 5, by DeacBlue (part 5): "She walked up to him, and said, 'Who do you think you are? I can tell you aren't anything that would require you to do anything like, dress.' He looked down at her and sneered. 'My name's Fred Phelps, little girl, and you'd better learn to respect your elders, especially one of the Elect!'"

  • A Brave Dead World..., by 11tee (COMPLETE!): "The younger woman stood up with the help of her companion, another woman. Older, with jet black hair, tattoos, and some oddly-placed jewelry. There was a pendant hanging from her neck, and a machete in her free hand. The machete had seen recent use. Her bosom heaved as she spoke, 'C'mon, Quinn. We need to go. As in now!'"

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 24): "Trent sighed. 'I'm going to try to stay with her. If it starts to get to her, and she turns back to drinking...' Trent saw Jane's face go blank. 'I'm sorry Janey. I know you have feelings for her. I'm sorry..' Trent closed the door."

  • Idiot or Savant :: Fat Like Me, by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "Tiffany began to circumvent her thoughts, trying to put them into a feasible sentence that could be spoken coherently to the other girl.... but like usual she was having trouble wording what she wanted to say."

  • It's Useless to Say, by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "Tom blinked a few times, trying to clear the opiates from his head. 'Go out...? Wait a minute. Daria? Is that you?' 'I'm afraid so.' 'Jesus. Never thought I'd see you again. We haven't spoken since we were in college. I hadn't even thought about you since...' A terrible realization dawned on Tom. 'Wait a minute. No. You can't be Daria.'"

  • Janey's Got A Gun, by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "Jane carefully stepped up to the young woman and raised her right hand. Her grip tightened on the gun in her hand. She waited. The point of no return had come and gone. She wondered where she should shoot first."

  • Keep Out, by Jim North (parts 1 and 2): "'So, how's it looking?' Daria glanced up briefly from the two workbooks in front of her before answering. 'It's looking like between us, we might make a halfway decent chemist,' she said dryly. 'Maybe we'll manage to not blow ourselves up next lab assignment.'" (Part 2)

  • Loser's Mailbag, by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "'Kevin! Go get the mail!' Charlene Thompson yelled to her son as she opened a beer for her husband, Doug. 'Mmm... Okay, Mom!' Kevin got to his feet and jogged out the front door. He grabbed a stack of mail from the box on the curb and brought it into the kitchen. Sorting it out, he found a letter for him from his doctor, and a letter to his parents from Lawndale High. He slid both of them under his jersey and tucked then into the waistband of his pants. "

  • Quinn Spirit Detective, by Reven384 (parts 4 and 5): "''Oh my looks like the egg's hatching,' Botan said as the egg cracked. Quinn watched with a mixture of excitement and terror as the egg continued to crack and tear." (Part 5)

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "What makes a date a date?"), by 11tee (COMPLETE!): "The phone was picked up on the second ring. 'Uhhhh.... hehe hehehehehe... Um. Hey there, sexy.' Daria held her breath a moment, then finally spoke. 'Hey, Butthead. I got a ques...' 'Diarrhea cha-cha-cha! Diarrhea cha-cha-cha! Heyyyy, baby. We've been expecting you, beh-beh.'"

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 15 and 16): "By the time she entered the kitchen, Jane was sitting at the table eating her way through a bowl of cereal and glaring at her coffee. 'Not cool enough, yet?' 'It had the audacity to burn my tongue. *My* tongue. How will I give lashings today?'" (Part 16)

G'Day...Yeah.

Happy Australia Day, everyone! Aside from that Crocodile Dundee alter ego there, I promise not to make any horrible Australia puns or pop culture references. I'm afraid that if I piss off the Aussies, they might send some of their flora and/or fauna after me. That stuff's deadly, man.

See a thread started by Deref at the PPMB if you'd like a perspective on the day from someone who, you know, actually lives there.

"Anybody else smell peanut butter?"

Today is National Peanut Butter Day! I don't recommend you eat that peanut butter sandwich Jane found, so instead why not celebrate by letting peanuts hijack your brain...moth to a flame...if you don't release me...you're driving me insane!

Sorry. Random Mystik Spiral moment there.

This also happens to be Beer Can Appreciation Day! I can hear the snide comments from both Ms. Barch and Jake about ex-husbands and horrible fathers already, so let's not celebrate this one in front of them, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • The Apex of Angst, by OverlordMikey (part 1): "I'm not entirely sure about who I am anymore. Outside my window I see a world gone mad; inside my house I see a few people gone mad. Sometimes I wonder if I've gone mad too."

  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 1: Esteem Rising, by RX-87 (part 2): "JAKE: Girls, I just want you to know your mother and I realize it's not easy moving offworld to a whole new colony -- especially for you, Daria, right? DARIA: Did we move? JAKE: Hahah... great joke, Kiddo. DARIA: No, I mean I thought I felt something pushing on... Never mind."

  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 4b): "Coming up to them, hand-in-hand with Stacy, Sandi asked with amusement in her voice, 'Bored already Quinn?' Trying to put on her best smile, Quinn replied back, 'Me, bored Sandi? Never.' While her girlfriend didn’t notice it, Sandi could tell that Quinn was still a little uncomfortable with the whole girlfriend situation. With that in mind, Sandi held back from saying anything further."

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 5, by DeacBlue (parts 3 and 4): "'Oye! Oye!' the bailiff called. 'The county court of Lawndale County, Maryland, Judge Viola Carney, presiding, all having business before the court, draw near!' He said, in an aside to the judge, 'First case is County of Lawndale v. Morgendorffer, Lane, and Burns.' '"Well, let's get to it,' Judge Carney said." (Part 4)

  • Chaos Theory: The Esteem of the Cynic and the Eccentric, by Walter Kovacs (part 6): "'We're all going to eat dinner at the neighbor's that night and I want everyone to be there.' Turning to her two oldest children, Helen continued 'This means the both of you too.' 'Exactly who are these neighbors we're eating at?' asked Daria. In a matter of fact voice, Helen simply said 'They're the Sloanes. I believe you know their two children.'"

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (cut scene and parts 21 - 23): "'Is that Daria?' asked Jane as they got closer. After a few moments, Jane knew it was Daria. 'Hey, get away from her!' shouted Jane. Lynn went running up, but came to a sliding stop when the guy turned around. 'Trent? What in the hell are you doing here?'" (Part 21) (Part 22) (Part 23)

  • How To Tell Time, by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "Brittany heard her alarm clock go off and opened her eyes wide, ready to start another wonderful day. She knew it was 6:30am because her alarm clock was going off, and she'd never bothered to change the time."

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (part 5): "'You didn't let things go in the middle of my speech, did you?' 'Me? No.' 'Good.' 'I cut loose when you were about halfway to the stage. I thought I'd try to get as much dispersal time as possible before you returned.' 'Now that's true love.'"

  • The Lawndale Adventure, by LadieT and The Angst Guy (part 3): "Amy watched the screen for a moment as her jaw dropped. 'Rita - are you sure they were on that ship?' 'Yes! Quinn called me tonight with a dating question and told me that she was on the Princess Fairy because her school was doing a fundraiser. I've tried Helen, Quinn, their house - no one's answering. Amy, I'm really worried,' Rita's voice broke."

  • Mad Dog's Legacy Chapter 11: Wilderness Adverturers, by Hyrin (part 1): "'Honey, you need to relax.' 'I know. I just...what should I do?' 'What do you say we go camping this weekend? Hell, you’ve got plenty of time off saved up. Let’s make it a 3-day weekend. Just us and the girls, living off the land.'"

  • Mr. O'Neill, Asshole, by Smijey: "'Esteem...a teen. They don't really rhyme, do they?' Mr. O'Neill said cheerfully. Daria did her best to pay attention to the pap, in the unlikely event that he said anything useful. 'You know what else doesn't rhyme? "You losers" and "a future." The sounds don't quite mesh, just like when your parents attempted to use birth control. But we are here to begin the futile task of realizing your actuality, and when we do...'"

  • Quinn's Code 05: Morgendorffers vs. Amazon, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "As she stepped out of the school building, Romonica took out her cell phone. 'Claude, it's me, Romonica. The classes have been canceled. 'The Principal didn't see it our way?' Claude asked. 'No, and it was a lawyer parent's fault! I will see the school, and her, in court!'"

  • Rude Awakening Ep.10: Sandi vs The EPT, by DIsaac (part 1): "TOM: How could this happen? SANDI: Well, when two adults do what they do... (TOM gives SANDI a dirty look) SANDI: Hey, I know we're epically screwed here. TOM: This makes kissing Daria in the car look like child's play."

  • Save the Last Trance for Me, by jtranser: "'Excuse me, Jane, but what is this pile of spoiled rotting vegetation sitting on My altar?'"

  • Shadow of The Fade, by BrownEyedBagel (part 2): "He paused and considered how he would even find his former student. It wasn’t like she had made any attempt to keep in touch, hell she didn’t have a good reason to do so. The only pupil he ever had who didn’t drop off the face of the earth was Kevin."

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "'Smithers, release the hounds.'"

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Daria entered her house and her mouth fell agape; before her was her sister and boyfriend. Her sisters lower torso was now that of a spider. Her eyes where glazed in a nightmarish black and her hair was now a thin red. Her mouth stretching outwards to show her disgusting elongated fangs and tearing away at the false human flesh."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Jane in your Home Town), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "'Well shuck mah corn and call me Mary Lou Belle!' Jane called out enthusiastically. 'We're in Branson!' 'Actually, I think you've gone a little too far south,' Daria corrected her, 'unless all those cows we saw were cleverly concealed corn stalks.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Jane in your Home Town), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked at the billboard in front of her. 'They're not proud of their football team or anything, are they?' Jane glanced up. 'Yeah... They won 3 straight national championships and defeated Michigan.' She shrugged when Daria looked at her strangely. 'What? I Googled.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Panel 2. Kevin, angry, picks a rock off the ground. KEVIN: If only I wasn’t a cripple! I’d whomp those jerks! If only this convenient rock was a football.. Panel 3. Kirby crackles erupt from the ball! Kevin stares in awe."

  • Unnamed story (Scream Scenes), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Jane chuckled as they stepped away from the lockers and started walking down the hall to their next class. It took Daria several seconds to realize that the chuckle had been in her mother's voice. 'Something wrong, amiga?' Jane asked when she noticed the other girl was staring oddly at her."

  • Unnamed story (Scream Scenes), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "As one, the crowd pressed in around Quinn even more, causing the redhead to suddenly become uncomfortable with being the center of attention for what was probably the first time in her life. Seeing the suddenly panicked look on her sister's face, Daria quickly moved to push through the mass of students, grabbed, Quinn by the wrist, and extricated her before she was suffocated or torn to pieces."

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 12 - 14): "'Hey, Trent, are there any eligible bachelors at this grocery store you work at?' 'Hmm.' Trent stroked his chin absentmindedly. 'Maybe. You want me to set you up with someone, Janey?' 'Yes, please.' 'Anything in particular you're looking for in a guy?' 'Alternative, but not in a way that's like everybody else. He needs to be cool with piercings. And art. In shape, and able to keep up with me. Cute, but not too cute. And cannot have a name that starts with a "T".'" (Part 13) (Part 14)

  • Working Woman (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The conference room was at the end of the corridor. A large room with a table big enough for a dozen people, Helen was surprised to find the room empty. It was very rare to be called there when there were no meetings. She had expected for some of the senior partners to be there. Instead, it was only Eric inviting her to take a chair. 'Helen, we want you to take a vacation,' Eric said just as she had sat down."

"Lawsuit!"

Hey, everybody! It's National Hug Day! Now get out there and hug someone.

Err...on second thought, maybe not.

Today is also Squirrel Appreciation Day, although something tells me Jake will not be celebrating. Damn rats with fluffy tails!

Last--but not least--today is the tenth anniversary of the premiere of Is It College Yet? It was the end of the series, but with it came a lot of closure and even a happy ending (if you aren't Tom, anyway). So if you have it, pop in the DVD and be glad that at least one of the Daria movies does not feature Mr. O'Neill shaking his ass in the opening credits.

I Wonder What Penguins Think of "The Cinema"?

Happy Penguin Awareness Day! Some of us may be more aware of penguins than others, but let's not forget that (as seen in "I Loathe a Parade") one of the Lawndale High School football team's major rivals is a team called the Penguins. You know, I'm not sure if that's a point in their favor or against them.

Anyway, today is also the anniversary of the birth of film director Federico Fellini, born on this day in 1920. Without Fellini, there would have been no Fellini Film Festival. Without the Fellini Film Festival, Daria would have had no reason to leave a message for Tom about La Dolce Vita. And so the fateful turn of events progressed, until WHAM! Daria and Tom making out in the car. So now we can finally place the blame where it belongs: on an Italian film director who died well before any of this even happened!

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 4a): "Stacy went for the volume knob and turned the volume back down. Sandi shot her a look when then Stacy shot Sandi one right back. Feeling defeated, Sandi focused back on the road. 'Is your mom talking to you yet,' asked Stacy. Talking, Stacy found, was usually the best way to defuse Sandi’s anger."

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 5, by DeacBlue (part 1): "Helen Morgendorffer looked at her colleagues as she finished up her call with the D.A. Jim Vitale, taking lead in the matter because the people involved were so close to the firm; the oddly named Bill Tweed, the firm's criminal specialist; and the tall, thin, Ann Freeman, their constitutional scholar. 'We'll be there, Jack,' she said, just before she hung up."

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 20): "'Speaking of Daria, where is she?' asked Helen. 'Still in bed.' Said Jane. 'Is she not feeling good? Is it drugs?' asked Jake. Jane and Lynn looked back at each other. 'No, we were up late.' Said Jane. Jake looked at Jane. 'Oh... Okay.' Jake went back to reading the paper."

  • Into the Black, Into the Blue, by Lord Yellowtail (prologue): "And though at this very moment she was still the second most powerful being on all Equestria, with the sun high in the sky burning Celestia’s benevolence and unconditional love down on her—and cutting her off from the infinite vastness of her power by holding back the darkness that was her greatest strength—she felt not for the first time cold and ancient." (Prologue part 2)

  • The James Lane Chronicles Chapter 7, by InvisibleDan (part 1): "James stood at the counter, stared out the window, and thought about what the next year would bring. Eleventh grade was almost an anticlimax. He and Daria weren't going to graduate for another two years, but they weren't exactly underclassmen either. Now they were closer to adulthood, close enough that the fantasy world of going to classes and having to answer to teachers was almost gone, to be replaced by decades of going to a job."

  • The Outers III: Was Blind But Now Can See, by The Angst Guy (parts 4b and 4c): "Someone else was coming up the steps with a slow, measured tread. Moments later, a tall black man in a dark blue USAF dress uniform came out of the stairwell. He was frowning at a small device in his right hand, the only thing he carried, poking it with his fingers to study the results with an even deeper frown." (Part 4c)

  • Paging, Dr. Morgendorffer, by oni (part 3): "Shuffling her hands around some, Jane found what she was looking for and showed it to Daria. Looking into Jane’s hand, Daira asked, 'Are you sure?' 'Of course,' replied Jane. 'Look, you just put it on the tongue like this.' She demonstrated it to Daria."

  • Tuition (Or Jane Lane and the $28000 Question), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "Jane heard her mother laughing and a look of confusion washed over her face as he mother spoke up again. 'You don't need to get a job unless you want one, darling.' 'So, you guys have a college fund for me?' 'Well, no.' 'Then... what?' Jane sat back in her chair and tossed the pen on the table in front of her. 'We have enough in the bank for that.' Jane sat upright again. 'What?'"

  • Unnamed story (IC: Why was Trent was banned from the Bookstore?), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "'Trent? Just stay here in the corner by the music books for a moment. We'll be right back.' Amanda Lane smiled at her son and walked off, holding her husband's hand as they headed further into the arts section to look at the pottery and photography books."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "What makes a date a date?"), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "Daria closed the book that had been open on her lap and stared at her sister. 'You realize that this constitutes actually asking for my advice on dating.' Quinn's eyes widened. 'You have to promise not to tell!' 'Fifteen.' 'Five!' 'Ten.'"

  • What Makes a Date a Date? (Iron Chef: "What makes a date a date?"), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked up from the card that she was reading and stared at Tom. Reading greeting cards ... really? REALLY? This isn't a date - this is a joke. Why am I even wasting my time?"

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 9 - 11): "'I don't mean to keep comparing you to Tom, you know. But he was my first in, well, a lot of ways.' Trent set his half-eaten slice of pizza on his plate and gazed at Daria for a moment. 'I don't mind, you know.' 'Really?' 'Nah. 'Cause, so far, I've come out the winner every time. I feel like this is how it's supposed to be.'" (Part 10) (Part 11)

Or Maybe DeMartino Should Just Pay His Electric Bill Already!

Today is the 306th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin, who was (among other things) a diplomat, inventor, politician, and--as DeMartino is figuring out--discoverer of various theories about electricity.

Today is also the anniversary of the Beavis and Butt-head episode "Sprout," which aired in 1996. In it, Daria tries to give the boys some advice about gardening. As you may expect, it doesn't work out very well for them.

Fanfic Update!
  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 1: Esteem Rising, by RX-87 (part 1): "QUINN: I can't believe we're moving to the L4 cluster! Ugh. It's so... So dull. Everyone knows L5 is where it's at! The clubs, the parties, the designers! Everybody who's anybody is there! DARIA: Hopefully that includes the High Front. It's just not a party without explosions."

  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 3b): "As soon as the front door opened, Sandi and Stacy bolted up from their spots on the couch. Fear crept into Sandi as soon as she saw Quinn. 'We’re hom-,' Quinn immediately stopped what she was going to say the instant she saw Stacy in the living room. 'Stacy,' she said with excitement, and then had a complete change in mood as soon as she saw Sandi behind Stacy. 'Sandi,' she questioned in a nervous voice."

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 4, by DeacBlue (COMPLETE!): "Sandi wasn't really aware of anything until she had been in several cars, and people sat around her doing paperwork. Occasionally they would ask her questions about her mother or...no, that wasn't him. Daddy's alive. It couldn't have been him up there. He had to be there to take care of me, especially when mother was being a bitch. So that wasn't him. It was just someone else who had climbed into the window and laid down on the bed and... She didn't realize that she was sobbing again until someone gently grabbed her arms and looked into her eyes." (Part 12) (Part 13) (Is It Fall Yet?)

  • Be Careful What You Wish For, by Doggieboy (part 6): "Before she could even raise her right hand to knock on the door, it opened and John Hobbs blocked the doorway. The young woman stopped, startled, and instantly knew that something was wrong. 'What?' she asked. 'What’s wrong, John?' He crossed his arms over his chest - slowly. 'If you want someone else,' he said, 'I’ll let you go and you can be with him instead. But do not play me for a fool.' Oh, Goddess, no! Not this! Please!" (SFMB)

  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (part 3): "It's Dad... alive! Mom was there, and Quinn. Even the presence of Grandma Ruth moved me. I burst into tears. –Wow, she is very upset. –Quinn! –said Mom–. Daria, what's wrong? I didn't tried to talk, tears kept rolling down my chin and I could not stop, as I didn't in Dad's funeral."

  • Ghost Girl Chapter 5, by Pumpkin Panic (part 2): "Daria smiled because Quinn in her own way had actually helped her feel a little bit better. 'Lets get to school and return to our normal hostilities as not to draw suspicion.' 'Yeah. I kinda really want to show whoever this guy is that he can't treat me like his object, and while I'm a pretty face I can also smash in his!' Quinn asserted with a raised fist."

  • God Save The Esteem ep39: Epic F Word, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked away. 'You might be in a different school to me. And neither of us is popular at any school in the county for what we’ve done.' The unspoken threat hung in the air. 'So I have some damage control to do,' said Daria."

  • Green Dragon Rising, by Grifter74: "Daria adjusted the butterfly clip holding her hair back in a ponytail as she looked in the mirror and checked her appearance. Wearing a green business suit, a different style of glasses, some make-up, and with her hair pulled back, almost nobody would connect Melody Powers the reporter, with Daria the high school student. Picking up her press badge and camera, Daria headed to Ernie's to look for her prey."

  • Hugz (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'I kissed your boyfriend. I kissed Tom. I didn't mean to.' Jane began to run off. 'Jane, wait!'"

  • Humpty Dumpty, by Smijey (part 2): "'Mn,' Daria replied noncommittally. 'Hey, are you okay?' Daria shot Jane a look. 'Right, of course not. But...what's on your mind?' Daria frowned, then spoke. 'Something Ms. Li said, about not getting any TV or radio broadcasts.'"

At least we have the summer before then. Summer. What are we going to do until we leave for Boston? Helen isn't going to let us sit around on our asses, no matter how much we'd like to. We need a plan."

  • The Lawndale Adventure, by LadieT and The Angst Guy (part 2): "When he walked into the bar, the owner was yelling at the Captain, who bumped into him as he was staggering out the door, clutching a bottle of rum tightly in his grip. • Rude Awakening Ep.9: Join The Club, by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "DARIA: Speaking of Sandi....You owe me forty dollars! JANE: Why? DARIA: Didn't you said Tom and Sandi wouldn't last 6 months? JANE: I said a year. You said 6 months and that still means I'm still alive in the pool."

  • Shadow of The Fade, by BrownEyedBagel (part 1): "The alarm buzzed as he lay there awake. Anthony had never dreamed about his former life, much less thought about it. In a violent display he grabbed the alarm clock and sent it at high velocity to the wall. He grumbled as he got out of bed, twenty five glorious years separated him from back then. A quarter of a century since he escaped with most of his sanity intact, since he left that baby with some beatnik woman who he would unfortunately end up sharing a town with years later."

  • Unnamed story (IC: Why was Trent was banned from the Bookstore?), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Trent and Monique entered the bookstore to buy her a copy of Violin. 'But if I'm going to make things too difficult for you,' Trent trailed off and glanced down at his thumb, nearly dry now, but lightly stained with the pomegranate's juice. 'I don't want to make you do anything that you don't absolutely want to do.'" (Part 7) (Part 8)

Helen, That's No Way to Get Taken Seriously at the Firm!

Happy birthday, Charo! Helen is portraying the actress/comedian with great enthusiasm, but I bet Jake will be even more enthusiastic when he gets a look at her in that outfit.

On a more serious note, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on this day in 1929. Those of us in the United States will also be commemorating the great man tomorrow on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but let me get a head start by sharing one of my favorite quotes from him:

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"Don't look now, but it's Toulouse le Dreck."

Happy birthday to Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, also known to fandom as the voice of Daniel Dotson from Is It Fall Yet? The young at heart but "delusional of mind" artist may have been a jerk, but let's not hold it against Grohl. Unless he's a fan of white-on-white painting, too.

Today is also the tenth anniversary of the airing of Look Back in Annoyance, a half-hour special/clip show that aired a week before the premiere of Is It College Yet? In it, we learned that Daria dated four of the five members of N'Sync behind the scenes (according to Jane, anyway). Sadly, we never learn which member failed to make the cut.

Finally, the nominations for the 2011 Daria Fanworks Awards are now posted. Time to get your votes in!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 4, by DeacBlue (parts 7 - 10): "Jodie finished quickly, put her gelato aside, and looked at her companions. 'I'm really glad that we ran into each other here, Quinn. I've really needed to talk to you about some things, especially about the promise that I made to you about Daria, Jen, and Jane.' She pushed her braids over her shoulders. 'As a matter of fact, it's kind of serendipitous that Tom's here, because he might be able to help.'" (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10)

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 19): "'Think of it this way, if they are talking about you, then they are leaving someone else alone.' 'I wish they would leave me alone. I finally decide to take a chance and go out with Trent, and all they can do is talk about it. They know I wouldn’t let him do anything.' Jane shook her head. 'Would you do anything?' 'No... I don’t know....'"

  • Daria - The Star Wars Chronicles, by Grifter74 (part 2): "Daria stopped next to Ashoka at the edge of the roof and said, 'Our Masters told us to stay out of trouble.' 'Yep, Anakin was quite adamant about it this time.' 'But, they don't know about the 2nd army coming at them, and comms are out.' 'So we have 2 options, stop the army or drop in our masters and tell them about the other army.'"

  • Footballs Like White Elephants (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Kevin strutted down the hall of Lawndale High, having won the big game against Oakwood last night by kicking the ball between the goalposts. A reporter from the school newspaper came up to him. 'Kevin, I have to say, that was a great kick you made last night,' the reporter complimented."

  • Ghost Girl Chapter 5, by Pumpkin Panic (part 1): "Nicholas Cage was a hamster. Of this he was certain. His earliest memories were waking up in his little hamster cage surrounded by large dark figures he had come to know as 'people' as they walked around and looked at him and pointed and squealed happily."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin’s Genie (Chapter 6), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Sandi approached Cranberry Commons from a different exit and saw the zero gravity in effect. ‘Not again!’ she thought. She looked again, and saw Judith Lake, a geeky fellow sophomore, near the entrance. It appeared that she had the emerald! Sandi decided to run into the gravity-less zone. She had learnt from the experiences at lunchtime. Sandi backed off and then dashed she jumped as she reached the threshold..."

  • The Outers III: Was Blind But Now Can See, by The Angst Guy (part 4): "'What time is it?' she mumbled, trying to get her bearings. Her butt hurt from sleeping in the uncomfortable seat. 'I heard someone say we're in Colorado,' said Jake, 'so that would be—' 'Twenty after four in the morning,' Helen finished with a yawn. 'I hope it's not too cold here. We didn't bring any heavy coats.' 'I see snow,' said Daria, pressing her face to the window. 'I guess we can huddle together like emperor penguins until we freeze.' 'We're not going to freeze here!' said Jake with determination—but then turned to Helen with concern. 'Are we?'"

  • Paging, Dr. Morgendorffer, by oni (part 2): "'Drugs,' Jane begun. 'It’s one thing to imitate his basic tape recording technique, but for it to be a true Hunter S. Thompson experience, you have to be tripping while you’re recording all this.' Raising an eyebrow, Jane looked at Daria and said, 'Of course you all ready know that, writer girl.'"

  • Rude Awakening Ep.9: Join The Club, by DIsaac (part 11): "ALISON: So....Why am I here? ALEESHA: I think how we first met ...in front of Jo... wasn't the best way we could have met. I think I owe it to your girlfriend and my friend to try to act like adult. ALISON: So Jodie twisted your wrist to do this until you said 'Uncle' ? ALEESHA: The long and short of It."

  • Unnamed story (just a little something...), by oni (COMPLETE!): "The sound of Daria trying to break down Sandi’s door had been going on for five minutes. To Sandi, it sounded like a great beast trying to break in and devour her whole. Of course when she thought about it, Sandi knew where the five foot two girl was putting all her weight. 'Her and her damn boots,' Sandi thought bitterly."

  • Unnamed story (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'That Spatula Man is funny!' 'As are most men named for kitchen utensils.' Thinking of licking chocolate cake batter of a spatula, Daria's thoughts suddenly shifted into licking chocolate cake batter off of Spatula Man, and she almost vomited. (Almost. No wasting those tacos!)"

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (part 5): "Daria pointed to the left. 'Think we should grab a buggy?' Trent looked confused for a moment until he saw where she was pointing. 'Oh, a cart. Um, yeah. Sure. Just in case.' 'We called them buggies in the South, loathe though I am to admit that's where I grew up.' 'You don't sound like it,' Trent said after grabbing a cart and starting to push it toward the produce section of the store. Daria fell in step beside him. 'And that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me.'"

That's One Way to Get Mystik Spiral on the Air!

Happy birthday to Howard Stern, born on this day in 1954. Jesse might have the hair for the alter ego image, but I seriously doubt he'd have much of a future in radio with a vocabulary made up mostly of "Cool" and "Yeah."

The Popular Aviator

Quinn is ready for take-off in celebration of the anniversary of Amelia Earhart becoming the first person to fly solo from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. I think someone should probably warn Quinn that the flight might mess up her hair, so a scrunchy is a must. I won't even start on those pants. Tsk.

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 2b and 3): "Taking her eyes off her dad, Sandi eyed the door to her mom's home office and moved toward it. Without even taking his eyes off the TV, the father replied, 'Don't go in their right now. She's not in the mood.' Ignoring her father's warning, she goes in anyway." (Part 3)

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 4, by DeacBlue (part 6): "Sandi Griffin moved her aching body around, then brought her hand to her throat as she started to wake up and felt the incredible soreness there. She opened her eyes, only to see Jennifer Burns standing at her bedside. What in the hell is she doing here? she thought. She tried to ask, but the words came out as a croak."

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 18): "Daria rolled her eyes. 'I don't believe I am going to do this.' 'Well, we have to find something that is different than what you normally wear, but something that still represents you as you.' Said Quinn, flipping through the clothes. She finally pulled a dark green shirt from the closet. She tossed it to Daria, and then ambled over to the dresser. She found only a few pair of pants, but mostly skirts. She finally decided on a pair of black jeans. She threw those over her shoulder, and then walked back over to Daria. 'This should go good together, for you anyway.'"

  • Ghost Girl Chapter 4, by Pumpkin Panic (COMPLETE!): "'I cant understand why you girls would come up with such an interesting story staying up late breathing in your nail polish fumes last night at this little sleepover you’re havin' and watching your lifetime movies with evil bad men stalking girls but really the likelihood of havin' a stalker in this town is slim.' He had talked to them like they were little kids with their imaginations running away with them." (Part 9) (Part 10)

  • Ghost Story, by Smijey (part 3): "'So, the "kids at school" told you that your cousin is buried in our back yard?' Daria nodded. 'In an old bomb shelter.' She felt like a total ass, even though she knew she was right. 'Wait,' Quinn said, looking up from her new issue of Waif. 'Are you talking about the House of Bad Grades?'"

  • God Save The Esteem ep39: Epic F Word, by Charles RB (part 4): "'Just to reiterate: the eleven of you are going-' 'Twelve, I called Death Rowe.' 'Oh, that's different. I was going to say "the eleven of you are going to try and pick a fight with every other gang, and believe you can win", but I'm sure that one extra person will make a difference.' 'Exactly!' said Quinn the snark-proof."

  • The Outers III: Was Blind But Now Can See, by The Angst Guy (part 3): "As the Moon got closer to Earth, the tides would get bigger. How much bigger? She couldn't say. She didn't even remember how big the tides usually got. Elsie and Tom and the other girls and their families and Aunts Amy and Rita--were they in danger? They couldn't be, the government would never deliberately let them go free without warning them of any danger. If there was danger, the government would surely tell everyone to run for the hills, wouldn't it?" (Part 3b)

  • Paging, Dr. Morgendorffer, by oni (part 1): "It was a Monday morning and Daria and Jane were walking to school. Jane still had a pop-tart in her mouth as they walked along the sidewalk. Talking in between bites, Jane asked, 'So amigo, your mom actually got you to agree to join a school club?'"

  • The United States of Daria, by Boring Bricks (part 1): "I hate this, this talk, and suddenly I'm all jittery again. Everything begins to come fuzzy, and images swarm into my mind, images of a blank piece of paper, with the upper right-hand corner emblazoned with a fat red F. Oh no! I think. What if Dad grounds me? Than I can't hang out with Jodie, and I'll probably be forced to miss out on Fashion Club meetings! My mouth opens, my eyes wide. What the...?"

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 3 and 4): "When he got to the apartment, the door opened just as he stepped in front of it. 'Trent!' Jane practically jumped out of the apartment at him and hugged him tightly. 'I thought you got lost or something!' Trent laughed, ending it in a cough. 'Nah. I've been at work.' Jane put a hand on his forehead and led him inside. 'Did you eat something strange? You seem to be babbling.'" (Part 4)

"I'd make them crawl, I tell you. CRAWL!"

Happy Play God Day! We already know what Jane would do in this situation, but this is the day that we all get to imagine what we'd do with that kind of power. Except for the AU fanfic writers, who do this kind of thing all the time.

Also, happy birthday to both Richard Nixon and Bob Denver, born in 1913 and 1935. There are probably stranger combinations of people to connect together, but that's got to be pretty high on the list.

"See something you like or just browsing?"

Today is Male Watcher's Day, and I'm sure Jane is happy to participate. Daria might be less enthusiastic, but she certainly had her (usually surreptious) moments with Trent.

Today is also Jake's birthday, at least in the Falling Into College universe. Happy birthday, Jakey! Celebrate with some kitchen sink stew, but don't expect the rest of the family to have any second helpings.

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 2): "A little bit later they left the building and headed for the car. Stacy playfully thanked Sandi as the older girl opened the door for her. After Stacy got in, Sandi was just about to close the door when she heard with just bit of venom in the voice, 'Awe now isn’t that cute.' Turning her head, Sandi could see that it was Brooke."

  • Beware of Pink Russians (Iron Chef - Artie's Abduction), by Stripey (COMPLETE!): "'Are you going to like, cut me open or something?' Paul looked horrified. 'What, no!' 'Are you going to teleport my brain?' 'Oh for Christs sake.' 'Are you,' Artie shuddered and gulped, 'Are you going to probe me?' 'Ohmygod NO!' Paul yelled. 'What on Earth makes you think we'd want to do crap like that?'"

  • Chaos Theory: The Esteem of the Cynic and the Eccentric, by Walter Kovacs (part 5): "'Speaking of popular...' said Stacy 'I saw this really cute girl at the mall the other day. A redhead.' Seeing an opportunity to one-up Sandi, Cyndi decided to chime in with a question of her own. 'Interesting. Was this redhead new in town?' 'Oh yeah. She moved all the way her from Texas!' Stacy thought for a moment 'Oh yeah, before I forget her name is Quinn Morgendorffer!' 'I'm sorry, is the subject of leggings and compatible shoes not interresting enough for tonight?' sniped Sandi. 'I thought this was the fashion club.'"

  • Daria: Artie’s Encounter (Iron Chef - Artie's Abduction), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "He awoke in a strange chamber that smelt of a damp cave. (The last time he’d seen a cave was at the old quarry after his prom.) He sat up ramrod straight. 'Where am I?' A form appeared covered in some sort of brown and splotchy concealing suit that covered everything. Artie noticed a single eye like iris thing at the 'snout' of the 'head' It emitted a musical tone before saying. 'You're awake. Good.'"

  • DW: The Many Doctors (Non-Daria), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "The TARDIS lurched, sending her crashing against a wall. The Cloister Bell stopped ringing. The TARDIS seemed to return to normal. 'Ok, this is either an earlier or later version of the TARDIS, but which is it? And is the Doctor an earlier regeneration?' she asked aloud to herself whilst feeling some fear mixed with the tiny thrill of excitement that she’d come to associate with adventure."

  • Fallout Lawndale: 2289, by Vukodlak (part 3): "Half of her wanted to break down and cry over what happened or what nearly happened. She could have been raped, killed, hung from a meat hook or suffered any number of the god-awful things raiders have a reputation for. The other half said suck it up you wimp, you got grazed by a bullet, tied to a post for six hours and you kicked a raider in the balls. You’ve had family outings that were more irritating."

  • Ghost Story, by Smijey (part 1): "Briefly, there had been a ray of hope in the girl who sat next to her, but when they had walked home and she saw the house Daria was living in she made some lame excuse and left. She had spent the entire rest of the week giving Daria the cold shoulder, casting the occasional fearful glance at her. 'Whatever,' Daria muttered, recalling the baffling actions. It wasn't the first time she had been inexplicably ditched." (Part 2)

  • God Save The Esteem ep39: Epic F Word, by Charles RB (part 3): "As the cheerleaders all started to think about this song, Daria walked over to Jane. 'Are you not at all worried that there might be a Hell?' 'Jane, for the past few years I’ve been worried I’d already gone there.'"

  • Humpty Dumpty, by Smijey (part 1): "'Well, maybe he won't live that long,' Jane offered. 'Come on. You know wishes don't come true.' At that moment, a great blinding light filled all of Daria and Jane's perception -- and, apparently, that of all the other students, as everybody cried out in surprise or fear. Accompanying the light was a massive roar, and for a fleeting second Daria was sure it was the detonation of a nuclear device."

  • The Lawndale Adventure, by LadieT and The Angst Guy (part 1): "'Come on girls, we're gonna be late,' Helen said in an irritated voice. 'Just carry me to the car,' Daria's muffled voice grumbled from under a pillow. For her response, Jane just snored. 'Helen, why don't we let Daria and Jane stay here,' Jake said as he placed his arm around his wife."

  • Memory Lane, by echopapa (part 1): "'Calvin Hall, Computer and Cybernetics Department. This must be the place,' Jane Lane said to herself a she dashed up the stairs and down the hall. Yesterday, she had noticed in the ads on the BFAC student website that nearby Raft College was looking for local students to volunteer for an experiment in a new method of data mapping the human brain."

  • On Portmanteaus (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Jane was browsing the latest offerings of fan fiction while Daria read a book on the bed behind her. 'Hey, amiga, ever notice how our fandom isn't saddled with those weird mishmash name things?' she asked out of the blue."

  • The Outers III: Was Blind But Now Can See, by The Angst Guy (part 2b): "Quinn tilted her head, widened her eyes, and gave a masterful performance of her Adorable Hero-Worshipping Teen Face. It failed to achieve a single objective except to bring more flattered smiles. Those must be some mighty big orders they're following, thought Daria. What the hell is happening?"

  • Rude Awakening Ep.9: Join The Club, by DIsaac (part 10): "QUINN: I think that law isn't best suited for me. SANDI: How? QUINN: The lawyers get excited when I come in. SANDI: The prosecution? QUINN: The defense! TIFFANY: Soooooo yoooooou sssssuccccck assss aaaaaa laaaaawyeeeeeer? QUINN: I think?" (Part 10.2)

  • The Truth is not There (Iron Chef - Artie's Abduction), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Artie should have been gone already; he was just supposed to be delivering a pizza. • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Artie's Abduction), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "'Doctor Bacon?' The boy is obviously in pain.'"

  • Unnamed story (just a little something...), by oni (part 4): "The phone by her computer rang. Walking over, Sandi looked down at the caller id and immediately recognized that it was Quinn. Letting out a sigh, she picked up the phone. 'Hello Quinn,' she answered with a certain amount of amusement in her voice. 'Hello Sandi,' Quinn answered back. 'Are you watching the morning news?' 'Yes and I must say that watching your sister flick off the press was such a nice way to start off my day,' she chuckled."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Could Be - The Non-Daria Edition), by Doggieboy: "When there was just two people ahead of me, several people rushed into the library. Teenagers, I thought, until I looked and saw several adults and children, all of them panicked. 'Vampires!' one woman cried out. 'At least twenty of them! They’re coming!'"

  • The Untold Interview of World War Z (Scenes That Could Be - The Non-Daria Edition), by Pumpkin Panic: "I sit down with the girl who was a world hero both before and after the outbreak. She's young. Too young to have the responsibility that had been put on her shoulders. I have to admit to myself that she just looks like the pretty girl next door. Nothing like the slightly older woman lurking nearby. Statuesque with long black hair and the most peculiar shade of green skin."

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 1 and 2): "Over the sounds of the slasher flick playing on the TV, Jane Lane heard a peculiar knocking. It seemed to be coming from the front door, but it didn't sound like a hand was doing the knocking. She glanced through the peephole and frowned as she opened the door. 'Trent?'" (Part 2)

D'Awwwwwww!

Happy National Cuddle Up Day! Helen and Jake are actually kind of cute in that picture, even if they are figments of Daria's imagination.

Today is also the day Joan of Arc is traditionally believed to have been born in 1412. Daria's participation in the poster contest in "Arts 'N Crass" may not be exactly on par with the famous French teenager, but Jane seems to think so:
Jane: You're a real Joan of Arc, you know that?

Daria: Yeah, and I think I just ordered a stake.

This Blog Post is for the Birds!

Happy National Bird Day! Helen and Jake are celebrating in their own...unique...way, but don't feel you have to follow their example. Instead, try getting caught in the mall air filtration system like Travis the Canary. Or squawk at everyone who comes too close to Penny like Chiquito does. Or, if flightless aquatic birds are more your speed...then no one needs to hear the details.

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (parts 1 and 2): "Looking up into her eyes, Sandi realized herself how much Stacy has change in the last year alone. After staring at her for a couple of seconds, Stacy added, 'I’m still happy you told me what you really felt about me that night.'" (Part 2)

  • Christmas Eve, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "As she walked by the living room, she found a tiny figure crouched down by the side of the couch. 'You know Santa won't show up if you stay in here waiting for him,' Daria whispered. 'I just can't wait to see what he brings me. I know I made the good list this year, I just know it.' The excited look on Cleo's face made Daria smile."

  • Daria Diary: Just Before Lawndale, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "What...assholes! They didn't bother to ask me if I wanted to move! They didn't ask Quinn! (There will be a state of mourning in Highland among the popular people). Instead, late that night, we heard, 'oh, your Mom got a better job, and I'll get a chance to be a consultant! I know you'll have fun in Lawndale!!'"

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 17): "'Daria.' Said Trent, looking down at his plate. 'What about her?' Asked Jane. She looked up at Trent, but noticed he wasn’t looking up. 'Trent... Look up at me.' Trent slowly raised his head. 'What did she do to you?' 'I think she stole my heart.' Said Trent."

  • Daria - The Star Wars Chronicles, by Grifter74 (part 1): "The Attention of everyone in the room shifted from Quinn to Sandi, who in her grey and black uniform stood out amongst the riot of color in the rest of the court. Sandy stepped forward and declared, 'I'll never join you in committing treason. People of Naboo, if you forswear your queen's actions here and now, I promise no retribution will fall on your heads. The Emperor is merciful to those who give true allegiance.'"

  • Discomfort Doll (Iron Chef: Texas is flooding and Daria lives by the river), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "Daria woke up on an uncomfortable white bed in a sterile white room. She must have been there for a while, as her joints were incredibly stiff. She didn't find it strange at the time, though it bothered her on later reflection, that she was wearing her favorite outfit, combat boots and all, instead of, say, a hospital gown."

  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (parts 1 and 2): "It was 11 am. I should call Marcello soon. I should go to the bathroom, and try to get myself together. Choices, choices... A shock of cold water helped to awake my lucidity. I don't needed glasses to know that my face doesn't look good in the mirror, but then a glimpse of my father's face appeared in the mirror. It was a quick vision and despite it was opposite to what I believe, for a second I thought I saw his face." (Part 2)

  • God Save The Esteem ep39: Epic F Word, by Charles RB (parts 1 and 2): "'The school’s dead, isn’t it? It’s still twitching but this is it. We’re going to be allowed to become the crap school, and only that because it’s too much of a pain to move all the students.' 'We can’t give up,' said Onepu. 'We CAN,' said DeMartino. The teachers agreed they could. 'No!'" (Part 2)

  • Jane Morgendorffer 2: The Middle School Years, by LadieT (part 6): "Jane was reading on her bed when she drifted off to sleep. She was dreaming about going to her favorite pizza parlor and was surprised to see Sheridan sitting at a table alone. Walking towards him, she could see he looked sad. Jane sat down beside him.
