Never Mind the QB!

Happy birthday to John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, who was born on this day in 1956. He was the lead singer of the punk band the Sex Pistols, which is why Kevin is dressing in classic punk style. Either that or he's trying out a very unorthodox new football strategy that involves distracting your opponents. With punk.

Morgendorffer, P.I.

Daria's going casual today in honor of Tom Selleck's 69th birthday. Selleck played the lead character in the TV series Magnum, P.I., which was briefly parodied in "Murder, She Snored." You know, I think Daria actually pulls the Hawaiian shirt look off rather well. I wonder what kind of fit Quinn would throw if she switched to it permanently.

The deadline for the Daria Fanworks Awards is January 30th at 11:59 PM UTC. Vote for your favorite written and visual works, if you haven't yet!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Adventures In The Morgendorffer-Sloane Residency, by muskweasel (part 3): "'So let's get one thing straight. I don't have any deep, meaningful stories to tell you. The one I'm about to tell you is anything but.' a boy with light brown hair and hazel eyes who wore a light green ball cap said as he plonked down on the grey leather couch in front of me 'Alright. Okay. You go right ahead when you're ready, Cassius.'"

  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 11): "'How did Trent know about this place? It's pretty cool,' asked Matt. 'Look, they have live music here.' From the outside, the place looked like a dive, but they had been surprised when they walked in the door."

  • Alienation, by malakite (parts 2 and 3): "It was during one of these art classes that the subtle enchantments she'd employed finally began to bear fruit. The girl next to her , Brittany Taylor , glanced at her and asked 'Hey, could you help me with this? I really don't get what Miss Defoe is saying.'" (Part 3)

  • ASPS 2, by PrecambrianStudios (part 9): "'Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be descending into Albuquerque, New Mexico in two minutes. Please fasten your seat belts, and welcome to the Land of Enchantment.'"

  • The Fledglings' Frustration, by Lady Keane (part 12): "Madamoiselle Vivian Radcliffe, art dealer extraordinaire, was a masterwork in black fingernails, beaded jewellery and entirely unashamed joie de vivre. Her large fluid gestures seemed too enthusiastic to be affectations, they were more similar to the earnest, guileless mannerisms of young children."

  • High School Never Ends, by welltemperedclavier (parts 5 - 7): "This is going to be painful. Walking up to the front door, Daria pressed the doorbell. For a moment silence, and the hope that she'd be able to walk home and get a job that required no human contact." (Part 6) (Part 7)

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (part 10): "'STAY-cee dear,' Sandi's glare could have curdled milk. 'Did you happen to pick up any other details? Such as whether Quinn's disappearance from Fashion Ca-lub business can be attributed to a nuclear breakout or her acceptance into Witness Protection?!'"

  • Midnight Study Sessions, by Snow-Kitty (COMPLETE!): "Daria tightened the plush green robe around her, hair dripping wet, as she dawdled along the Persian carpeted hallway of her former history teacher's home, or Tony's Love Shack, as Brittany and Angie called it."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "That night, the Morgendorffers went to the UFO convention, which had come to Lawndale for the weekend. The first thing Daria noticed, was that the convention hall was laid out exactly as it had been at the previous town where Sick Sad World had filmed. 'That's not my concern. I'll be busy with Lawndale,' she thought."

  • Popular Girl Esteem (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As Daria raised her hand to ask Mr. O'Neill what the hell he was talking about, she heard someone clear their throat behind her. 'Don't bother asking him anything.' A girl's voice spoke up from behind Daria's seat."

  • The Red Skirts, by NapalmKracken (part 2): "As cynical as she was Daria wasn't sure if anything could have prepare her for Lawndale's poor material condition. The hull was mottled and discolored, many segments having appeared to have been hastily repaired after combat but never properly replaced or fixed. Particulars of her appearance suggested that she had never had a refit in her entire 41 year career."

  • A run, run, run, run a, by peetz5050 (part 3): "Daria woke suddenly when the bus jerked to a halt. 'Dammit' She muttered to herself. 'Shouldna fallen asleep, not safe!'"

  • Still Standing On My Neck, by SentrytheDefiant (parts 2 and 3): "'Whoa, Jane you are truly amazing! Seriously, I don't know how I managed to get accepted'. My roommate, Star, had just entered the room." (Part 3)

  • The Talk (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Quinn leaned against the doorway of the bathroom that they shared. 'Um, I was wondering... why are you going out with Tom Sloane?'"

  • Transitions (Scenes that should be: Pacific Rimmers), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'I have to admit,' Tom said to his two companions during lunch, 'That I honestly didn't have much hope that I'd have anyone to talk to at this school.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Manson took it all in in a moment - the slight smile and the tiny flush of red in the bespectacled girls' face, the tiny, twin flecks of envy and annoyance in the carrot-top's expression, the way Mackenzie's eyes couldn't help but to drift over to Daria..."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "A shocked silence had descended over the classroom as O'Neill danced in front of them, wearing a palm tree skirt and a leopard print bikini."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by malakite (COMPLETE!): "Scene, Daria is speaking into the camera."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Today was truly a sad day for the family and friends of Brittany Taylor. Kevin, Mack, Mr. Taylor, and a few more of her relatives were her pallbearers as they solemnly carried the coffin across the grass."

  • Venom, by Astrocar82 (part 1): "'Quinn, is anything happening up in your head anymore?' 'Daria, haven't you checked your phone?' Quinn asked sounding strangely distant."

But Is the Cake a Lie?

Quinn's got a tasty surprise for everyone because today is Chocolate Cake Day! I think we should all celebrate by having some delicious chocolate cake. Or by giving me some delicious chocolate cake. Either's good.

Also, happy birthday to Lewis Carroll, born on this day in 1832. Carroll is best known for writing Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. There have been quite a few Daria fanfic crossovers with those stories, and you can find at least some of them here.

"That's funny, because it's the exact opposite of the truth, right?"

Daria and Quinn have pulled a switcheroo to celebrate Opposite Day, and it's hard to say which one of them is enjoying the experience the least. Daria, I think, is just hoping to keep it together until it's over. Quinn looks happy, but something tells me she's dying inside.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 10): "'Don't you trust your boyfriend?' 'It's not him, it's the women that think he's a sexy, available guy that I don't trust.' Her stomach began to feel a little weird. 'He's going to forget about me.'"

  • Alienation, by malakite (part 1): "As a late model Lexus pulled up to a school, a worried sounding father within said 'Now, girls , I understand it isn't easy moving to a whole new town , especially after uh' He paused momentarily to think. Perhaps it was best not to bring it up."

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 6): "Daria staggered though the front doors of the store, squinting and shading her eyes from the bright interior lights. 'Yo!' Jane called from the other side of the store. 'You ready for your first over-night shift?'"

  • The Crust III: The Upper Crust (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Daria squeezed in through the narrow hatch and Tom proceeded to seal it behind her. 'So, uh, thanks for letting me stay in your panic room until the rest of my life, I guess,' she said, already tearing open an MRE."

  • Dream On (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Forced to slow down anyway because of the curve, Tom studied her curiously as he came closer. She was in her mid-teens, skinny and just a little on the tall side with honey-colored hair in a ponytail. She was wearing jeans and a short-sleeve purple shirt with pink cuffs."

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 33b): "There was a story in the newspaper about a powerful storm heading for Lawndale and expected to arrive that same day. Dylan suggested they might not want to be on the roof when it hit and Rod agreed. Besides, they both wanted to see the aftermath of the devastation from close up."

  • Evening, by JPAGC (part 2b): "Jane moved to the chair by Helen's right and took her seat, waiting only enough to allow Daria to pass behind her. In front of her, across the table, Sandi remained standing with her hands on the back of the chair, smirking."

  • High School Never Ends, by welltemperedclavier (parts 1 - 4): "She paused in her thoughts, half-expecting a response. Shaking her head, she kept forward, one booted foot in front of the other. Ten minutes later found her across the street from her intended destination, the big front building still in its familiar shade of off-yellow." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • How To Change A Life, by ognawk (part 4): "Ashley was sorting out his locker, while thinking about the situation with Leanne dating Joe Lopez. He cursed himself for not having had the bottle to ask her out himself, and now that ship had probably sailed. Just as he was closing his locker, Leanne walked up to him with a smile on her face."

  • In These Plagued Streets, by ognawk (part 4): "'Guess there's only one way to find out,' Jane said as she played the video. Jane saw a dimly lit room. After a couple of seconds, she was greeted by an all too familiar sight, the red hair, green eyes and oval rimmed glasses of Cassidy."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (part 9): "She kept walking and threw the door open. Alison whirled around in surprise and dropped the empty wine bottle. It hit the floor and broke. Daria stared her down until the temperature in the room was sufficiently low."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "There was a large crowd at Lawndale High's tennis court. The new girl, Quinn Morgendorffer, was playing against a player from Oakwood, Lawndale's biggest rival. What was impressive was that Quinn was winning."

  • Still Standing On My Neck, by SentrytheDefiant (part 1): "My first day at Raft University and I'd forgotten a pen."

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As Tom Sloane was drunkenly stumbling around some dark road in Miami, he briefly wondered if he had remembered to use a condom, since that last chick from the bar had been on the skanky side..."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Your daughter will be fine, Mr. and Mrs. Morgendorffer. We've determined she has an infection from a bacteria known as clostridium difficile. We have a specialist coming in today who will be performing the operation --' 'OPERATION?!' Jake howled."

  • Veronique Morgendorffer (A.K.A. The Noodle Incident) (A New Direction), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "'Okay Morgendorffer, so how about we pass the time and you tell me a story.' 'What? You want me to make something up?' Daria blinked at her short-sightedly through the steam."

Daria's Deepest Secret

Daria has slipped off her boots for just a little while because today is Measure Your Feet Day and she wants to make sure she still fits that six and a half B shoe size she mentioned in "Of Human Bonding." Jake, it's worth mentioning, is apparently a ten D--which seems a little large. Still, you know what they say about guys with big feet...they wear big shoes.

Don't forget to vote in the Daria Fanworks Awards! The nominations for written and visual works are at the links.

Umm...Lawsuit?

Daria has just surprised Jane with a sudden observance of National Hug Day. That's today, so I'd recommend everyone keep their distance from Mr. O'Neill. Of course, that's good advice for every other day, too.

Today is also Squirrel Appreciation Day, so if you see Jake wearing a squirrel skin cap on his head and doing a victory jig...then you know that he missed the point. Oh, well.

Last but not least, it was on this day in 2002 that Is It College Yet? aired on MTV. It was the very last canon view we got to see of Daria and all the others, but the characters still live on in fanfic.

The written and visual nominations for the Daria Fanworks Awards are now up. Get out there and vote!

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (parts 7 - 9): "'Sis, can I ask you a personal question?' Daria sighed. 'You're going to anyway.' Quinn gave her that knowing look again. 'How's Trent?'" (Part 8) (Part 9)

  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (parts 56 and 57): "Karis Chapman turned her filmy-white eyes skywards to see the stars as she freely walked Fielding's grounds." (Part 57)

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 5): "'You go run the register,' Bob said, shaking his head. 'You started it, you get to deal with it. I'll finish stocking the cooler, then you can go home.' 'It's gonna get weird, isn't it?'"

  • Great Professor Dario Ch. 1 A fresh start, by ST91 (part 6): "11:30 a.m... Good ... I can sleep a little more. Jane thought as she replaced the alarm on the nightstand. 'Just five more minutes and then I'll get up.' she said to herself."

  • Life in the Past Lane - Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Jane Lane became a fan of Retro Dudes..."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (parts 7 and 8): "'Hello, Quinn.' 'Eeeek!' Quinn jumped. There was Daria, sitting on the edge of the bed." (Part 8)

  • Northbank Diaries #1: A Tale Of Three Suburbs, by ognawk (part 5): "Jane was sat in Mr DeMartino's history class, sketching away on a piece of paper. Sketching in class wasn't a new thing to her, she did it regularly. Normally, she'd be able to pay attention to the teacher and sketch at the same time, but her mind was miles away, wondering exactly what was going to happen to her."

  • Psycho Therapy--the Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer added sleeping upside-down and spreading rabies to her interests."

  • Quinn's Code 09: Morgendorffers in the Woods, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Quinn's Tale 'In a time not so long ago, there lived this girl...'"

  • Target Down (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Tom was making his way out of the house. He checked he had his keys, wallet and phone on him before he left the house. As he closed the door and made his way to his car, his phone started ringing."

  • Transitions (Scenes that should be: Pacific Rimmers), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Kids,' Kay said to both her children, 'I know it's nerve-wracking having to go to a new school in a new town...'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Jake eyed her hungrily. 'Why'd the chicken cross the road?' 'I don't know,' Helen countered in a similar tone. 'Well, you're about to find out.......'"

  • What is Fashion?, by Smijey (part 5): "She was loath to continue the conversation of her own volition, but geek as he may be, Ted might finally be able to solve the riddle. 'So, uh, Ted...what is fashion?'"

"Nothing says 'be mine' like a pounding heart beneath a floorboard."

Daria is enjoying The Telltale Heart in honor of Edgar Allan Poe's birth on this day in 1809. In addition to The Telltale Heart, Poe also wrote The Raven, which in turn inspired Lew Richardson's A Raven, Nothing More and wildgoose's The Cynic.

That Electricity Can't Be Doing His Eye Any Favors

Mr. DeMartino is trying his hand at science as Benjamin Franklin, who was born on this day in 1706. Unfortunately, I don't think the experiment is working out the way he'd hoped.

...And yet, I'm sure it's still less aggravating than trying to teach Kevin.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Adventures In The Morgendorffer-Sloane Residency, by muskweasel (part 2): "I interviewed Miriam Elena Sloane-Morgendorffer exactly a month after I saw Ophelia, on a Saturday after she had finished her first week of seventh grade. She had trouble deciding which story she wanted to tell me, but she finally chose the first day back at school after summer break."

  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 6): "He stepped around her, into his room. He leaned against the doorframe, not quite looking at her. 'I can't walk you to your car,' he said quietly. 'I can't watch you leave again, not like this.'"

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 4): "Daria looked up from the desk and saw a tall, solidly built young man looking down at her. His green hair and facial piercings looked familiar for some reason. She frowned, and then something Jane had said clicked."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (parts 3 and 4): "As she looked off to the doors where he usually came out, she didn't notice another girl approach from behind her, grabbing her glasses and taking them off her." (Part 4)

  • In These Plagued Streets, by ognawk (part 3): "'What's eating at your soul, Daria? You can tell l'il old Janey.' Daria looked at Jane and then looked at the floor again, not making a sound."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (parts 5 and 6): "Trent frowned contemplatively. It's okay to cry... I can't see the sky... Why won't I die?... Who ate all the pie? Nah, that doesn't quite fit." (Part 6)

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "Daria entered the office. 'Can I help you?' the receptionist asked. 'I would like to know what the procedure is for forming a school sponsored club.'"

  • A New Kid's Dance Party While a Tree Grows (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Did you hear, Brittany? Kevin was taken to the hospital after running into the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree,' Angie Zammit said, as she came up to her fellow cheerleaders."

  • The Red Skirts, by NapalmKracken (part 1): "Daria tried to pay them no heed. She just buried her face further into her book, or at least what passed for one these days. Physically it was a baby blue rectangular reader with a small library in it. She was a passenger aboard the transport ship SS Kinsha, an old long-range luxury yacht whose glory days were far behind her."

  • Tom Sloane, Lax Bro, by Shiva (part 20): "Elsie glanced behind her to see her two sisters-at-arms, Elaine Dickinson and Gretchen von Ramsla, already bitching away."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Lying About "The Kiss"), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'I've been watching you.'"

  • Untitled Fourth Wall Breaking Conversation (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "SHIVA: 'Elsie?' ELSIE: 'Yes?' SHIVA: 'You've been popping up with increasing regularity in fanfics these last few days and I was wondering...'"

  • The Woman in the Window, by SacredDust (part 1): "Things were different between them since she formally dissolved the Fashion Club almost a year ago. Not only were they still together, but they found themselves beginning to enjoy each others' company."

"...it's not how hard you study, it's how hard you play football!"

Today is probably Kevin's favorite anniversary (sorry, Brittany) because on this day in 1967, the first Super Bowl was played. The event became a tradition still celebrated with insanely expensive commercials, heavy drinking, and dip, Stacy, dip!

"It's only a matter of time...."

Quinn is coming up with a sweet fantasy because today is Make Your Dream Come True Day. I suspect she's thinking of something related to sales at Cashman's. Daria, meanwhile, is trying to work out a new way to get her whole family to do something together...something that'll really make them suffer.

Only two days left to nominate stories and artwork for the 2013 Daria Fanworks Awards. Hurry up if you haven't sent them in yet!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Adventures In The Morgendorffer-Sloane Residency, by muskweasel (part 1): "Ophelia Amy Sloane-Morgendorffer turned 13 years old on July 24th 2013, and the way she chose to spend the day was sleeping."

  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (parts 4 and 5): "Jane yawned as she made her way to the bathroom. There was a light on in Penney's room; Daria was reading. She's not sleeping much. God, I hope this doesn't all blow up. I haven't seen her this unsettled since she finally bailed on that thing she had going with-Steven? Was that his name?" (Part 5)

  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (part 55): "Gage and Karis stared in wonder as Dylan scarfed down an entire hamburger within seconds. 'How can you do that without pulling a muscle?' Gage asked with incredulity."

  • The Crust II (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Shotgun in hand, Daria walked down the road in Crewe Neck, on her way to the Landon household (and blowing away any Crossed that crossed her path). She'd received a frantic call from Jodie begging for help before the line went dead, and since Jodie baked the best pies, Daria was obligated to save her life."

  • Extinction of the Spanish Habsburgs (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "As the sweat poured down her face, Elsie gave one last desperate scream as pushed her child into the world."

  • Good Afternoon, by Vukodlak (part 1): "'Really mom Yoga? You signed me up for Yoga?' Daria couldn't believe this, well maybe that was true she could believe it. What was unbelievable was Helen waiting to tell her until they were on there way there."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (part 2): "'But I don't wanna wear glasses!' 5 year old Cassidy sat in a chair in the kitchen, arms folded and looked annoyed. Her mother Melissa sighed as she brushed her daughter's short, red hair."

  • Love Kills 2 (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "The following Monday, Ashley was sat alone in the lunch room with his thoughts. Cassidy came over and sat opposite him, smiling as she did so. 'Hey, you,' she said. 'Hey,' he said, returning the smile."

  • Magic Is Pants (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Daria replied, 'So, what did you want me here for?' 'Well, I found this,' Jane said as she closed the door and showed Daria a rather thick book with lots of strange symbols on the cover."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (parts 2 - 4): "Suddenly she turned around and looked closer at Daria than she had in several days. 'So what if he does call? Better yet, what if he asks you out? Not that it's my business anymore.'" (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Victor Morgendorffer, by Shiva (part 24): "After Danny reached for the remote and turned on the TV, an old boxing movie appeared on the screen, he asked, 'Did you pass on the message that you'd be here "tutoring" me?' Danny put the word 'tutoring' in air-quotes."

It's a Good Day for Omnipotence!

Want to bend the world to your merciless will? Well, this is your big chance, because today is Play God Day! I shudder to think what DeMartino would do with unlimited power, but I suspect things wouldn't end well for Kevin. Jane is busy making everyone crawl, I tell you. Crawl!

Of course, any fanfic writer will tell you that anyone can play God when it comes to fictional characters. Not that any of us ever let that power go to our heads or anything. Bwa ha ha.

Finally, you've got less than a week to nominate stories and artwork for the 2013 Daria Fanworks Awards. If you've already sent in your nominations, great! If not...what are you waiting for?

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 3): "She lifted the top carefully, and found herself staring at what lay inside. You're not a sentimental person, Morgendorffer. The past is what it was, and we have only the present and future to deal with. Still, she felt herself tearing up when she began to understand what her sister had done."

  • Another Parade (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "An opening on the crowd to the street suddenly appeared almost in front of her. Without thinking, she boldly jumped to use it... only to find it suddenly blocked and bump into a large young man coming in the other direction."

  • ASPS 2, by PrecambrianStudios (part 8): "When he found it, he lightly rapped the knuckles of his fingers against the door. It opened. The visitor smirked at the surprised reaction written on Ethan's face. 'Edric,' the ASP blurted out."

  • Be Careful What You Wish For, by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): "'Scarlett?' The co-ed recognized the voice of Mike Clements and felt the cold feeling in the pit of her stomach."

  • Benjamin Peter Morgendoffer, by Veleriphon (part 3): "Having to come back to the rest of this vapid carousel of torment, I reached down and took the paper. Some girl named 'Stacy' wanted to know what I was doing this weekend. A few giggles behind me confirmed that I was dealing with morons possessing increasingly-thickening skulls. I simply crumpled the paper back up and made a perfect shot on the trash can."

  • The DeMarTerminator (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Before he could finish his sentence, a strange, blue field of what appeared to be lightning appeared by the TV, causing O'Neill to shield his eyes. As the field disappeared he noticed a tall, skinny man stood in the room, who looked very familiar."

  • Emptystomach Climbers II (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Daria had relished the opportunity to escape from the cabin of hugging and jerky theft. She had very, very begrudgingly allowed Jane the traitor to tag along with her and Mr. DeMartino, and even let Jane huddle close to her for warmth and wind-breaking purposes."

  • Expedited Shipping (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Daria found herself in this position so many times before, a child catnapping in comfortable cardboard confines. However, she wasn't used to doing so as a teenager. Or waking up in the middle of a hurricane."

  • For Brief Periods, Spaced Many Days Apart (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'That was nice, what you said,' Daria admitted as they walked back to the car. 'That we make a good team.'"

  • Gambling on Two Additions (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As the Harpies sang their power ballad 'I Wish I Could Quit You' to the (mostly) uninterested crowd of students, most were focused on the games of chance to be found at the blackjack tables, the craps table, the poker tournament in the next room, or the various slot machines scattered about."

  • A Great Loss (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Having dropped Ashley off, Cassidy and Tom continued on their way, but Tom was confused to discover that Cassidy had driven to some mountain roads, instead of his house. 'Erm, Cassidy? I think you took a wrong turn somewhere,' Tom said."

  • Hands Up - Daria M Banks (feat. One Percent), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "(a rythmic beat plays over the Lawndale High parking lot - cars full of students in urban clothing start to nod their heads as Tom Sloane (dressed as Scrooge McDuck) and Daria Morgendorffer (herself with hand tatoos reading 'READ' and 'MORE') walk in, wearing shades."

  • High Cards (Daria and the Gang Thread), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "It was another day at Lawndale High School. President of the Fashion Club, Quinn 'Queen' Morgendorffer walked down the hallway with Vice-President Jodie Landon, Brittany Taylor and Stacy Rowe."

  • The Kiss and the Make Up (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Daria cringed upon hearing her voice. She'd been a hanger-on at Camp Grizzly, and she'd dutifully palled around with Daria ever since she found out her 'old pal Daria' had moved to Lawndale."

  • Limericks (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "There once was a fellow called Luhrmann...."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Daria trudged up to her room, lost in her thoughts. Not until she was gone did Quinn slowly peek out from the kitchen."

  • My Darlin' Singin' Cowboy! (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Howdy! I sure do appreciate this.' The blond and beautiful cowboy said with his Texas twang as he climbed into what passed for a vehicle."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Quinn flounced in, quickly taking in how the Griffin's living room appeared. (She didn't notice as much as Daria would have, but there were times in Highland that she had noticed something that Daria had missed.)"

  • Next Time, Aim for the Trash (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Daria moodily took another tasteless bite out of her pop cart. She chewed once, twice, three times before the thought entered her mind... What the hell did I just hear?"

  • Out of Place, by PrecambrianStudios (part 5): "Ognawk craned his neck to see and felt his heart skip a beat: with orange hair, glasses, and crazed love in her eyes, Cassidy was walking towards Tom Sloane. Ognawk tried his best not to squeal with joy. 'Oh my god.'"

  • See Jane Run from her Addition (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Out of the corner of Jane's eye she could see a handsome young man checking them out. She smirked but kept her focus on the stage she was already seeing someone, it was to bad because he looked cute."

  • Shadows of a Timeless Song, by Dennis (part 11): "'I don't suppose you know where Arimathea is?' she asked Jane at breakfast one day. 'Oh, sure,' Jane said. 'That's all Trent and I ever talked about. His sleeping habits, avoiding bill collectors, and the location of Arimathea.'"

  • Strange Birds (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Daria wouldn't have believed it if she didn't see it with her own eyes. A Holiday That's For the Birds

Helen is sharing a snack with Jake in honor of National Bird Day! It may not look appetizing, but it's probably still better than whatever Jake cooked for dinner. Today we also salute Chiquito, Mavis, Venus, Elvis, Chloris, Clovis and Posh...but not Travis anymore. Poor Travis.

Also, throwing in another reminder to nominate stories and artwork for the 2013 Daria Fanworks Awards. Don't forget: the deadline is January 15!

Zzzzzzz....

Daria's getting a few extra winks because today is Festival of Sleep Day. Trent, of course, considers this to be a year-round holiday.

For the Lord of the Rings fans out there, today is also the anniversary of author J. R. R. Tolkien's birth in 1892. To celebrate, Helen is going to dig out the hobbit candle Jake made for her and Jake is going to shriek in terror at it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Twilight Friday, by Brother Grimace (parts 1 - 6): "She slinked away from her desk, batting her eyes at her husband - and her faux-seductive demeanor sloughed away suddenly as Denny held up a small, slightly beaten-up brown strongbox. 'Oh, Denny...'" (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • "Aw Mama...Can This Really Be The End?", by Scissors MacGillicutty (part 7): "'...and with that, I'm going to turn the meeting over to some of the resident and post of duty offices in the Washington D.C. division. I'd like to start with Agents Hauser and O'Brien in the Carter County post of duty office and then go to the Baltimore division office. Agents Hauser and O'Brien—are you there? I haven't seen any video from you since the start of the meeting.'"

  • Battle-Axe, by meowarts (part 4): "It had been two months since the Morgendorffer's moved into the quiet suburban life Lawndale offered. And life went on despite her silent protests."

  • A Capital Honeymoon (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "The two couples arrived at their hotel, ready for their joint honeymoon. Checking their room numbers, they discovered they were next door to each other."

  • Credence, by Astrocar82 (parts 6 and 7): "'It's a chemical compound that dissolves in the oil that hair produces. Squeeze it on your hands, run your hands over someone's hair and, presto, foul smelling liquid starts to foam on them that eventually drenches their body. My mom got kicked out beauty school for it.' 'It's perfect, but how do we get it on her? She'll notice us coming near her now.'" (Part 7)

  • The Crimson Queen's Daughter's, by macross (part 5): "It wasn't the fact that the commander seemed completely unsurprised by the man's presence, in fact it seemed like he was expecting him; no the thing which had caused all of the rage fueled valor to flow out of him was the little girl with bright red hair slumbering in the Commander's arms."

  • Dead Inside (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As a chap named Tom Sloane shook his twenty-something booty while working the stripper pole, his pink thong already filling up with cash, it took everything that he had not to cry."

  • It's All An Illusion...Maybe, by Doggieboy (part 1): "The man in the long dark brown robe searched the closet, and tore through piles of clothing and forgotten papers, a despearate expression on his face."

  • Jane, by PrecambrianStudios (part 4): "'So, what would you like to sculpt?' Cassandra asked as she and Jane reclined on the couch inside Jane and Trent's apartment."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie: Future Excerpt 1, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'And Lawndale is currently embroiled in a crisis brought on by the discovery of a Genie. Correct?' the new arrival asked. 'That is correct. What is going on?' Kyra asked."

  • Loss of Heart, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Wadding up her paper napkin and dropping it on the empty lunch tray, Daria said, 'After a rough start with Mr. O'Neill, the day hasn't been that bad. Mrs. Bennett kept things in hand and Mr. DeMartino was surprisingly supportive.'"

  • Mission: Impawsible, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Mr. Whiskers crept over to the corner of the house to peer around to the front, but suddenly scrambled backward as J. B., Snuffles, and Odette raced around the other side. Odette growled fiercely, and Taylor bared her claws and hissed. 'Stop!' cried both Fluffy and J. B. at the same time."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Daria entered the school. Instantly she noticed many things that didn't seem right. 'Of course, Highland wasn't 'right' either,' she thought. Her trained investigator's eye saw a great many security cameras along the length of the corridor she was entering. 'There are at least eight. That's overkill.'"

  • No Unfinished Business, by thedefiantone (COMPLETE!): "'I am definitely over it,' she said, flexing her tired, numb fingers until some feeling was restored. She had been writing all night; or rather, she had been writing the same thing all night, hoping that, by dint of repetition, it would magically be rendered true."

  • Quinn the Psychopath, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "It was a done deal, Sandi thought with a smirk of triumph. Her plot to oust Quinn as any sort of a threat to her status at Lawndale High had been a smashing success."

  • Sisters and Friends, by metameric1 (part 19): "Quinn smiled. He was so unassuming, but so capable at what he did. He carried himself with a quiet confidence, and he somehow managed to bring calm to a tense situation. She had been grateful for that; even over a videocall he managed to keep her centered and focused during the final software integration check."

Oh, No! She's Mixing Primaries During Daylight Hours!

Happy New Year! Tiffany is busting out her mad sewing skills as Betsy Ross, who was born on this day in 1752. Ross is popularly believed to have created the first American flag, although there's no evidence that this is true. That's okay, though; Tiffany's ability to sew (or do anything aside from apply mascara) is also unlikely to be true.
