Watermelons AND Avocados? What a Day!

Jesse's thrilled to be celebrating National Watermelon Day, although everyone within a ten yard radius probably won't be as happy about it. Whether you smash it, wrestle with a greased-up one, or just eat the fruit like a normal person, enjoy the holiday!

Today is also National Avocado Day, so all those millennial stereotypes should put some on toast. Or you could make some guacamole and warn Helen not to miss it. Blurk.

Fanfic Update!
  • All American Rejects, by Lady Evil (part 1): "Helen looked at her highs school year books lined up on the shelf in the bedroom she shared with Jake. She had all four of them."

  • The Extreme Teens, by GuidingKey1234 (COMPLETE!): "(Haus Morgendorffer. Afternoon. Daria, Jane, Brittany and Jodie are hanging out and watching Sick Sad World)"

Do Tigers Eat Lasagna?

To no one's surprise, Helen is celebrating National Lasagna Day today. The shock would be finding out the Morgendorffers ever celebrate National Not Lasagna Day. That would be newsworthy!

Today is also International Tiger Day, and Jane reminds everyone that they don't have to choose between the lady and the tiger. They might, however, have to choose between funky hair stripes and keeping a friendship intact.

Walk Quietly--People are Trying to Sleep!

Daria is requesting that everyone keep it down for National Sleepy Head Day, which is technically a holiday in Finland but there's no reason the rest of us can't steal it. I mean, Trent practically invented it!

Today is also Take Your Houseplant for a Walk, Take Your Pants for a Walk Day, and Walk on Stilts Day, and I have to say that sounds like one bonkers walk. If you try all three, have fun but share photos!

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Pierce Me," which aired on this day in 1998. Daria took her piercing for a walk; does that count?

Fanfic Update!
  • Flash Forward, by Spikesnifty09 (part 1): "'I've got the popcorn!' Jane yelled from the kitchen."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 34): "The snowy mountains just to the Northwest of Layndale, often visible from the town and its vast forest when the weather was clear, were a truly beautiful and remarkable place."

  • How Jodie Spent Her Summer Vacation, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Mystik Spiral made it clear that Jodie wasn’t welcome back in the band until she had 'made some serious lifestyle changes,' although Max had called her a true criminale and given her a thumb’s up as they left."

  • The Naked Truth, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Kevin, Jim, Jamie and Chuck are on the porch having some beer and enjoying a warm June day. Kevin is also smoking a cigarette."

  • Prom Night Ahoy, by GuidingKey1234 (COMPLETE!): "(Lawndale High Cafeteria. The Fashion Club are having lunch)"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by NightGoblyn (part 5): "Daria dropped her bags off in the spare bedroom while Quinn stomped upstairs to her room and slammed the door."

Bonus Points for the Kilt, Though

I see Joey is enjoying Bagpipe Appreciation Day, but I hope he isn't intending to impress Quinn with those. Bagpipes played well can be lovely, but played by a beginner...well...not so much.

Today is also Threading the Needle Day, so go help Jake out with his mending and piss off a camel at the same time.

Hot Enough for Cowboys

Helen is making sure everyone knows that today is Hot Enough For Ya Day, in the most direct way possible. Considering the Daria fandom has a segment of very ardent Helen admirers, this holiday may have a double meaning! On a serious note, to those in harm's way due to the latest heat waves, please stay safe.

Today is also National Day of the Cowboy, so if you see Travis hitchhiking on the side of the road be sure to swerve in his direction. Or pick him up, if you feel like you aren't annoyed enough yet.

Fanfic Update!
  • Business Boom, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Jim Carbone is walking through the aisles of Wal Mart. He's trying to find the electronics section."

  • Business Boom, The Aftermath, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Tom is seated at his desk doing some work despite the fact that it's Saturday. He hears a distant sound of thunder."

  • The Geek's Expose, by cfardellbrenorenz29 (part 4): "In between classes, Mr. O'Neill took Daria aside. 'Why me?' Daria wondered."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 33): "So far from Somewhere Else and Layndale, back in Earth and so deep into the wildest forests in all of Pennsylvania, Daria Morgendorffer just could not stop thinking about her sister Quinn as she slowly tried to drink all of her coffee."

  • How Jodie Spent Her Summer Vacation, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "Walking inside, Jodie almost walked back out as the lights and noise immediately assaulted her senses. Many of the games were already in use, but her attention was quickly drawn to a large virtual reality simulator featured prominently in the middle of the arcade."

  • Reborn: The Origin Story Of Burnout Girl, by radiofox (part 1): "I opened my eyes for the first time in god knows when, everything felt so... rushed. I couldn't place a finger on it; till I realized I was being reborn."

Mmm...Processed Chemicals....

Looks like Tom's in trouble again, and all because he just couldn't resist celebrating National Junk Food Day. I feel like a guy with as much money as he's got could afford to just keep a stockpile of snacks on hand, couldn't he?

Today is also the anniversary of both episodes "The Misery Chick" in 1997 and "Jake of Hearts" in 1999. Tommy Sherman died in one and Jake had a brush with death in the other. And in both, Daria has to deal with people pestering her even more than usual. Death sucks when you're an introvert.

Nyah!

Amy's got the right idea for Stick Out Your Tongue Day, but I don't think your niece's wedding is the most appropriate place to celebrate. Then again, any wedding should have at least a little bit of silliness thrown in!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Groped by an Angel," which aired on this day in 2000. I have no way to verify this, but I'm almost certain Quinn's guardian angel stuck its tongue out at her at least a few times.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Boy, by Lady Evil (part 7): "'Well, that was 18 holes.' Jake said, wiping his brow."

  • Book Burner, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Jim and the triplets are watching the evening news. On the TV is Stacy. She's standing in front of the burned down ruins of the Kilmer Library." (Part 3)

  • By The Way I Push You Away, by Spikesnifty09 (COMPLETE!): "Daria was leaning against the vending machine. She was waiting for Jane to get out of Art Club."

  • Daria Agere, by Spikesnifty09 (parts 1 - 8): "Daria sat in her box, colouring book on the floor and Meow, the stuffed cat in hand."

  • Fates Entwined, by DeepMetal (COMPLETE!): "And so it began. After four years of high school, Daria was finally where she wanted to be, in college."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 32): "Lockie Allyngard was still quite cold, sleepy and sickened as she crawled her way out of that orange couch, her white and gray blankets slid to the wooden floor slowly, that heavy door upstairs was closed and locked so fast and after that there was nothing but silence."

  • How Jodie Spent Her Summer Vacation, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "Jodie took a deep breath and entered the den. Here goes nothing, she thought. Literally. "

Get Some Ink and Then Get Some Rocky Road!

I think Jake has taken National Tattoo Day a little too far, but I salute him for his surprisingly high pain threshold. I shudder to think how Helen is going to react when she sees him.

Today is also National Ice Cream Day, so be on the lookout for Mack in his little hat and bell that goes ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling. A-ling.

Old MacDonald's Got His Hands Full Today!

Looks like at least someone is having a pleasant Cow Appreciation Day...or at least she is until Roger the Skydiver falls on her. Poor cow.

In case that wasn't enough attention for farm animals, today is also Celebration of the Horse Day. Considering Daria has had nothing but bad experiences with horses, I think she'll be sitting this one out.

As a side note, this is the 4,000th post of this blog! Wow. That's a lot of bad jokes and fandom updates!

Fanfic Update!
  • Book Burner, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Nine-year-old Teddy Carbone is walking to the check-out desk with several books."

  • Daria on the Trail, by Meester_Lee (parts 9 - 12): "Daria had difficulty getting to sleep that evening. Despite her exhaustion, Daria found herself reviewing her encounter that afternoon." (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12)

  • skeletons come to life in my closet, by tiny_voices (COMPLETE!): "The thing about it is, it should've been a closed case."

  • These Boots are Made for Many Things (IC: Symbolism), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "'Dad, I want those,' Daria said, pointing to the pair of boots that had been pushed to the very edge of the display, as if trying to avoid detection."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by NightGoblyn (parts 2 and 3): "'So, what do you do for fun?' Jane asked. She was sitting across the table from Daria, having introduced her to her favorite pizza place." (Part 3)

Shine On, Harvest Quinn!

Joey, Jeffy, and Jamie are celebrating Barbershop Music Appreciation Day, but I'm not sure barbershop works as well as a trio instead of a quartet. Still, as long as they harmonize better than they impress Quinn....

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Fair Enough," which aired on this day in 1998. In that one, we saw a performance of a much different style than barbershop, although I wouldn't be surprised if the three Js' singing also ended with audience members throwing food at them.

Probably Beats Spending Time with Kevin!

Brittany's spreading a bit of kindness for Cheer up the Lonely Day, and I'm sure the nice people at Better Days Retirement Home appreciate the visit. Especially the dirty old men.

Today is also National Swimming Pool Day, so get in that pool and swim, you cow! Sorry. Blogger talk.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Boy, by Lady Evil (part 6): "'And it’s in!' Jake cheered as his ball rolled into the hole. He picked up his scorecard and made a note. 'And I made it in two under par! Not bad at all!'"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 30 and 31): "Anna loved the view of her peaceful Feli Lake at almost any day of the year." (Part 31)

  • The Passion of the Chris, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "An old Honda Civic was going down the road. Inside, a visibly upset Andrea Hecuba was driving home from her job as a hairstylist." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Half of Jane's attention was on her brother's band, the other half following a nice looking boy across the way."

Are Crappy Cars in Fashion?

Daria and Jane are appreciating the hell out of Tom's Jaguar for Collector Car Appreciation Day, but I think the holiday was created with the intention of appreciating cars in halfway decent condition. Tom's cars tend to be one good sneeze away from falling apart.

Today is also Fashion Day, and I think it goes without saying that the Fashion Club is celebrating. Of course, they're probably celebrating by insulting each other's outfits, but if that's what makes them happy then I won't stop them.

There's "Dive" and Then There's "Plummet"

Jake is obviously having second thoughts about celebrating National Dive Bar Day, but as long as the place serves martinis I'm sure he'll be fine. Mystik Spiral can take their pick of the Zon and McGrundy's, because it's a toss-up which of the two is the bigger dive.

Speaking of the band's questionable choices, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Road Worrier," which aired on this day in 1997. While the group didn't actually visit any dive bars, that diner probably wasn't a whole lot better.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Daria Witch Project, by vixens (part 2): "It was the 31st of August, one day left until their house imprisonment ended."

At Least Upchuck Is Happy

Andrea doesn't look even remotely amused by National Bikini Day, and I don't really blame her. Couldn't they at least have found her something in black?

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Mart of Darkness," which aired on this day in 2000. I bet Payday sells bikinis, but you have to buy a pack of twenty. Hey, maybe Andrea used her employee discount to get hers!

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall....

You might think that Quinn is celebrating Compliment Your Mirror Day, but in reality this is how Quinn starts every morning. She's her own best friend.

Today is also Stay out of the Sun Day, which Daria will have no problem observing. All of her books are inside, after all. I'd like to think this holiday was invented by vampires so they wouldn't feel so lonely.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Boy, by ladyevil (part 5): "'OK, Becky,' Jake was saying. 'Before you take a swing, you need to address the ball.' He looked down at the golf ball and waved. 'Hello, ball! Ha-ha, little joke there!'"

  • Jim And Kevin's Excellent Misadventure, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Stacy, Nicole, Sandi and Tiffany are watching TV. Stacy: 'Thanks for having us over, Quinn.' Quinn: 'No problem, Stacy. I figured since our husbands are having a guy's night out, we might as well have a girls night in.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Daria's Rugrats (Iron Chef: Runaway Daria), by cfardellbrenorenz29 (part 2): "Daria awoke. She sat up in the bed, she then recalled that it was her brother's birthday."

Much More Rewarding Than Teaching

It looks like Mr. DeMartino has made a career change just in time for National Postal Worker Day, and I wish him well at it. Plenty of hikes, no students to teach, and Ms. Li nowhere to be seen. It's paradise!

Today is also Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, so feel free to join Mack and Kevin for some Firstdown Fudge or Pigskin Pistachio!
