Jake Likes This!

Jake's just thrilled to find out that someone accepted his friend request on Social Media Day! I really don't think I want to know what Jake would be like on social media, though. He'd be the guy forwarding all of the debunked urban legends and spamming everyone with quiz results, wouldn't he? For extra fun, check out this (still occasionally active) Iron Chef thread from years back on what various Daria episodes would have been like if they'd played out on social media! There's still room for more episodes, too...hint, hint....

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "The Big House," which aired on this day in 1997. So many gems in that one: DeMartino's manic exercise sequence, Daria torturing her parents with Scrabble, the whole thing with the harmonica? (chef's kiss)

Fanfic Update!
  • Adventures in Brat-sitting (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (part 1): "'EEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKK!!!!' The scream of a maiden could be heard all throughout the village."

  • Born on the Fourth of July, by Lady Evil (part 5): "'Absolutely disgusting.' Daria said, looking at her reflection in the mirror."

  • Old School Blues, by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Jane Lane sometimes wondered just how much of the dust in the air came from irradiated human bones."

  • Pinch Sitter 2 (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim were back from the club with energy to spare. As such, the entire floor could hear the passionate lovemaking going on in their hotel room."

Pierced Brains, Anyone?

I know exactly how Jane feels right now. I mean, Daria celebrating International Body Piercing Day? When she surely knows that it's just a holiday thought up by corporations to sell more body piercing-related greeting cards? Wow, what a sell-out.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Psycho Therapy," which aired on this day in 2000. My favorite scene from this one is the role-playing exercise. So much disaster, so quickly.

Beauty and Chocolate? Chocolate IS Beauty!

Quinn's celebrating Beautician's Day, but I'm sure she'd be there regardless of what holiday is today. If you visit a beauty salon today, be sure to thank the professionals...or at least offer to buy some scissors from them.

Today is also National Chocolate Pudding Day, and I think Brittany speaks not just for Daria but for all of us when she denounces that gross pudding skin. Blech.

Fanfic Update!
  • Born on the Fourth of July, by Lady Evil (parts 2 - 4): "So, please, oh please R.S.V.P. And come and be my guest!" (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Guilty Pleasure (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Trent of course wasn't the only one back in NYC Rose was texting every day. She also kept in touch with Daria, Jane, and Jodie."

  • Mega Mall Mega Problems, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Thursday came rather quickly. However, Xander quickly found a problem. 'I have to take Sam and Chris to school?'"

  • Pinch Sitter 2 (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Jim was in the home office paying bills. He looked at one and his eyes went wide." (Part 2)

Can Fairies Swim?

Jodie's taking a break from school, extracurricular activities, and reality in general for International Fairy Day! I wish her the best of luck--a magic wand is the only way she's going to get any time off...ever.

Today is also Swim a Lap Day, so let me just advise you to SWIM, YOU COW, SWIM!

Sorry. Coach talk.

Kiss and Tell

Helen's really not enjoying National Kissing Day, but maybe Jake can change her mind. Let's just hope no one uses the holiday as an excuse for stabbing their best friend in the back. Just hypothetically speaking. Not naming names. Cough.

Today is also National Columnists Day, so maybe Future Daria can put her thoughts about kissing and/or betrayal into words and publish them. Or it could be fodder for Brittany's "Ask Brittany" column.

Fanfic Update!
  • Born on the Fourth of July, by Lady Evil (part 1): "Daria wanted to spend the summer day sleeping, but she knew that wouldn’t convince her mother that she had volunteered to work at the library."

  • Snail Mail (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Jane and Alan had invited Trent over to their Soho loft for an early dinner. He was very happy to accept the invitation; since Rose left for home it seemed like everyone was either too busy or exhausted to hang out as much as they had during the summer."

Have a Good One, Jake-O!

Check out Jake there, living his best life for Father's Day! I hope Helen and the girls are extra nice to him, or at least more tolerant than usual of his...quirks. Maybe they could just look the other way when he makes himself a second martini?

Today is also the Summer Solstice, a.k.a. Finally Summer Day, which means we can now start asking each other if it's fall yet.

A Fishy Kind of Day

Looks like Mack beat us all to it on Go Fishing Day, and I have to say that's an impressive fish. Mack looks pretty proud of it, too, but maybe that's because he finally found an activity that didn't include Kevin.

I hope he's planning to eat his catch, because today is also International Sushi Day, but I suggest Jake avoid Tokyo Toby's this time. This is especially relevant because today is also the anniversary of the episode "My Night at Daria's" in 2001. Jake's bout with sushi-caused food poisoning was nothing to his freakout over Daria and Tom's tryst-that-wasn't-and-never-was.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 45): "Despite the fact that it was only a couple of days into January, Daria and Anahita knew that it was time to go back to Hogwarts."

  • Hearts Apart (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Trent could immediately feel the lack of Rose's presence the first night he returned to his bartending job at Ruttheimer's after she'd left for home."

  • How To Be A Man (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Daria and the triplets were in the living room. Daria was reading Sun Tzu's The Art Of War while Teddy was reading Machiavelli's The Prince and Quinn was reading an issue of People." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "When school let out Friday, Jane told Daria 'Let’s just hang around until the game starts. If we get good seats, we might get high fives from the DJ’s as they skate by.'" (Part 10)

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 03: Night of the Coffee House, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 8): "As Daria headed to her next class, she thought about what Jane had said regarding Ms. Defoe. ‘I’ll talk to her at some point,’ she decided. It was bound to be significant."

Cue the Violins!

Brittany's trying to recreate the iconic scene from Psycho, which was released in New York City on this day in 1960. I have to say, Brittany as a scream queen kind of makes sense as a career. I mean, she doesn't have the acting skills to pull off anything subtle and she's pretty okay with being filmed in the nude (as long as it's crucial to her character). The only problem as that the pitch of her voice probably keeps shattering important film equipment.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Too Cute," which aired on this day in 1997. There weren't any slasher scenes there, but Dr. Shar's face was pretty horrifying.

Marxists and Monkeys

Today is the anniversary of the birth of the late revolutionary Che Guevara, and Mack is keeping that spirit alive. Of course, Mack is probably rebelling against Kevin calling him "Mack Daddy" or "Bro," but it's still a worthy cause.

Today is also Monkey Around Day, which Kevin will be pleased about. He likes monkeys, especially the one who hangs out with the man in the yellow hat.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daniel Mongendorffer, by ST91 (part 71): "'Come in.' Ms. Li said when she heard a knock on her office door. 'Oh, good morning Mr. Morgendorffer!' she said smiling when she saw her student."

  • Flames, by atiyatortilla (part 6): "'Is that my dearest brother come to grace us with his presence?'"

  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (part 8): "Matthew was finishing up his lecture in the auditorium. Kuma was sitting on a high stool with a nearly finished bottle of Similac and tuna purée."

  • The Pink Moon Is On Its Way, by Anonymous (COMPLETE!): "It turned out that a field trip without Jane was a dreary enough affair to make Daria wish that she'd just stayed home herself."

  • Summer's End (Linn's short stories), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Rose woke up bleary-eyed and rather disoriented. She didn't get back to the studio apartment until almost four."

A Rose By Any Other Name...Is Still Trash

I would say that this goes against the spirit of Red Rose Day, but then again I'm pretty sure the spirit of Red Rose Day is to sell a bunch of overpriced flowers. So I'm not going to judge! I prefer the chocolate roses--cheaper, tastier, and they don't die on you.

Today is also National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, and I recommend celebrating by baking some heart-shaped cookies for that special annoying someone and being super creepy about it.

I Just Hope He Used More Than Just Pepper!

I see Jake is enjoying Herbs and Spices Day, but I really hope he used some restraint this time. We don't want a repeat of the black tongue incident...at least, not until Daria has the camera ready.

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of the late Judy Garland in 1922. There were a number of Wizard of Oz references in Daria, so I'll just highlight "Wizard of UG," a Wizard of Oz/Daria crossover by Ken T. Enjoy!

Fanfic Update!
  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (part 7): "'So, you’re the Matthew Williams Alfred told us about.' Jane said, checking out the maple leaf patch on his backpack as they walked to the donut shop."

  • Summer's End (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (parts 3 and 4): "Over the past few weeks the Y2K party Jeffrey and Rose had been planning had garnered quite a bit of buzz in local circles. It was based on something from just long enough ago to almost be nostalgic, yet still a pretty fresh memory to many." (Part 4)

I Don't Think These Two Holidays Mix Well

Daria and Jane are cheerfully celebrating Best Friends Day, and while singing is optional you should probably check in with your best friend, too. If you have one, that is. Inanimate objects like televisions and books count.

Of course, these two only look so happy together because this was before The Tom Thing. Later, they might be more likely to celebrate Name Your Poison Day instead. I named mine Bob.

Hey, Four-Eyes!

Daria's obviously enjoying National Eyewear Day, and so should the rest of us glasses-wearing folks. I mean, having bad eyesight doesn't really come with any other perks, so we might as well take the holiday and run with it.

Today was also the anniversary of the opening of the first drive-in movie theater in 1933. I don't know if young people now gather in the parking lot to practice their swing dancing moves, but I sure hope so!

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 70): "Daniel used to wake up quite early in the morning. Also because he loved to stay a few minutes cozy in bed before getting up."

  • Doctor Who - An Ordinary Wednesday, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "They waited for about half a minute. The reading vanished. 'That’s strange,' the Doctor commented."

  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (part 6): "Helen was having second thoughts about letting Daria bring a boy into her room."

  • Mega Mall, Mega Problems, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Lawndale didn’t have everything. That was the issue that had vexed Quinn Morgendorffer over the past few weeks."

  • Summer's End, by Linnofthewoods (part 2): "Later that evening, just after dinner and a little while before Trent was due to leave for work, he sat on the living room couch with his acoustic guitar. He let out a low, rumbling sigh as he strummed."

Donut Miss This Holiday!

Have a nice twisted little cruller for National Doughnut Day! Or a bear claw, or a Bavarian cream-filled, or whatever sweet breakfast treat takes your fancy. I'm not here to judge your food choices...but that chocolate doughnut is mine.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Aunt Nauseam," which aired on this day in 2001. No doughnuts in that one, but the Barksdale sisters did make some cookies at some point. I think. Did those cookies ever actually make it to the oven?

Get Ready...Get Set...GO!

It's Global Running Day and Jane's off and...well...running! I hope the global part only refers to the holiday being celebrated everywhere, because I don't think it would be wise to run around the entire world. Your feet would get wet, for one thing.

Today is also National Leave the Office Early Day, which Helen will almost definitely not be celebrating. Maybe she'll leave the office only an hour late, but I wouldn't count on it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 66): "'Everything ok?' asked Charles when Daniel was back. 'Yes, just a talk with my little sister and her friends.' Daniel answered."

  • Daria on the Trail (Daria Landing In Another Fanfiction: An Experiment), by Meester_Lee (part 5): "She discovered that she wasn’t the only one who’d taken shelter under the Orricks’ wagon: Jilla and Minti were also there."

  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "The mood at the breakfast table the next day was somber. Mom had accepted the fact that her older son was dying and was upstairs grieving." (Part 30) (Part 31)

  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (part 5): "'No way in Hell am I wearing this to school.' Daria stated, walking out of the changing room."

  • Summer's End (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (part 1): "While Rose had been cleaning the studio apartment one last time before she left New York for Arkansas that Sunday, she had the TV on in the background."
