What Do You Mean by "International"?!

The Landons actually look kind of cute there, dancing cheek to cheek for International Dance Day. Of course, I'm sure Michele will find some way to take offense at my calling them "cute," so I'll just stop right there before I push too far. The rest of you can bust a move, or not, as you see fit.

Now Tell Us the One About Hansel and Gretel!

Daria and her friends (that's right, friends!) are enjoying Tell a Story Day, thanks to Daria's adult library card. Of course, once their parents hear about this it won't be quite as fun. Daria should probably stick to retelling fairy tales, either around a campfire or during baby-sitting jobs. Then again, that could get her in trouble, too. How about some nice poetry? By Allen Ginsberg?

Fanfic Update!
  • Flames, by atiyatortilla (part 3): "Despite the previous day’s rough start, Daria allowed herself to be dragged away from the house."

  • Sleeping With The Frenemy (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "As New York is a blue state most of the shooters on the range are people who handle firearms professionally." (Part 2)

  • Tommy's War (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Tony is leading the kids on a speed march."

  • Young Americans, by Lady Evil (part 4): "'Jamie doesn’t live too far from here.' Alfred said as he drove. 'I’ll pick him up and then Harriet. Lawndale Lanes is some ways off, so we’ll have plenty of time to talk and stuff.'"

A Hair-Raising Holiday

While Quinn is getting her hair done on National Hairstylist Appreciation Day, I very much doubt she's truly appreciating her stylist. Frankly, I'd be surprised if she appreciates anyone who does anything for her, at least during the early seasons.

Today is also World Penguin Day, and if you don't know why that's a significant holiday for this fandom then I'm sure as hell not going to explain it. (shudders)

They Do Call Him "Mad Mack"

Mack's busy concocting...something...for World Laboratory Day! Whatever it is, I don't think Kevin's going to like the results.

Today is also World Book Day, so take the opportunity to curl up with some nice reading material. Except Kevin, who not only doesn't read but will be too busy taste-testing Mack's latest creation.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (parts 27 and 28): "Despite her fear and worry about Dad, Rikka woke in a good mood. That was the first time she remembered dreaming about her mother in a long time, and it was not only good to see her again but also to know that while she might be dead, she was out there watching over her." (Part 28)

  • Fast Forward, by damnshawtysahottie (part 1): "His stubble brushed against my left cheek as the camera started rolling. We had over 1 million subscribers as we were a part of the latest new craze of cremation on ‘Pizza Hut’. But that’s beside the point."

  • Flames, by atiyatortilla (parts 1 and 2): "Thin beads of sweat rolled down her neck as Daria fumbled to open Jane’s front door. Even with her new key, the lock felt strange and complicated." (Part 2)

  • Is It Fall Yet? Part II, by WildDogJJ (part 2): "Daria, Jane, Quinn, Jim and the triplets were loading their luggage into the back of Santino's SUV."

  • The Lawndale File - Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer Agents? At Lawndale High? Jane Lane Who are these 'different ones'?"

  • The Past in the Present, by Linnofthewoods (parts 2 and 3): "Daria tore out and crumpled another sheet of paper from her notebook. This skit just wasn't coming together no matter what she did." (Part 3)

  • Tommy's War (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "The whole family, including Daria, is seated at the kitchen table having breakfast." (Part 2)

  • Young Americans, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "OK, when do I ask her? Jamie thought as he walked to the cafeteria. Lunch? I don’t really want anyone seeing us together after the embarrassing way she asked me to the spring fling. Maybe I better just wait until after school." (Part 3)

Dogs and People Who Work Like Them

This bulldog, which fandom has named "J.B.," hopes everyone knows that today is National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day. I mean, you wouldn't disappoint that face, would you?

Today is also Administrative Professionals Day, but poor Marianne doesn't have time to celebrate. Not if Helen has anything to say about it, anyway.

"Man, what a good day to just kick back and chill."

Jake and Helen have certainly figured out how to celebrate National Hanging Out Day, but I wouldn't count on it lasting long. A ringing cell phone or a military school flashback is going to ruin it all any minute now.

Today is also National Garlic Day, which is great for spicing up that Kitchen Sink Stew or for keeping vampires away. Or both!

Fanfic Update!
  • Gone Sister Gone (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Mom and dad were still arguing. Actually, it was more like dad was yelling and mom was just trying to keep him from doing something stupid."

  • Hey, Jealousy (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim sings along to the song on the radio, a classic from his high school years, as he drives." (Part 3)

  • Is It Fall Yet? Part Two, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "It was a summer day in Lower Manhattan. In the East Village at the corner of 8th Street and 3rd Avenue was a pizza parlor called Roy's Pizza and Bagels. Inside, Daria and Jane were conversing over pizza."

  • The Past in the Present (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (prologue and part 1): "Back in Lawndale, no one had been in the Lane family household for nearly a month." (Part 1)

  • Young Americans, by Lady Evil (part 1): "At Lawndale High, in Mr. DeMartino's class, DeMartino was teaching the students about the Jonestown massacre."

After Lawndale High, a Circus is a Step UP

Mrs. Bennett has chosen a new career path just in time for World Circus Day! Now I'm wondering if those insane economics diagrams were just a gag that the students weren't in on.

Today is also International Bat Appreciation Day, so today's the big day for anyone who's always wanted to sleep upside-down and spread rabies. Just don't tell the folks at Quiet Ivy.

That High Five Sucks!

Jane is celebrating both World Art Day and That Sucks Day at the same time, which is impressive for a slacker like her. Of course, Jane would never create art that sucks, so she's free to judge everyone else's work, right? Cough.

Today is also National High Five Day, so if you see artwork that doesn't suck then you should slap the palm of your hand against the palm of of the artist's hand. Because that's a thing we do to show appreciation for some reason.

Fanfic Update!
  • And So The American Experiment Begins, by Lady Evil (part 6): "'Well, the place looks nice.' Alfred said as he and Daria entered the gym decorated with pastel balloons and crepe paper."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (parts 43 and 44): "Daria remembered the next few days for a shopping trip to Diagon Alley and the Christmas parties." (Part 44)

  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 26): "They left for the hospice an hour after breakfast. They took two cars: Jake, Melanie, Jade and Rikka rode in one car while Helen and Quinn rode in the other one: Daria remained behind: she decided that the itchy eyes and runny nose she’d worried about was turning into a full-blown cold."

  • Hey, Jealousy (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Jim is having a therapy session with Dr. Lisa Barone. Oddly, Dr. Barone is wearing only a lacy black bra and thong panties and her boobs seem bigger than normal."

  • The Sandi of Time (Iron Chef: Turning 40), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Sandi was old enought to remember when the Zon was the grunge club that nobody popular went to and was busted by the health inspector on five seperate occasions one year."

Go For the Triple Word Score!

I don't know what game the Morgendorffers are playing, but it's unlikely to be Scrabble for Scrabble Day. The board is all wonky! Of course, maybe the animators did it that way on purpose to avoid copyright issues?

On this day in 1997, The Sunday Examiner & Chronicle: Parade published an interview with Daria. It's one of the earliest media features, and contains all the snark and one-liners you'd expect!

Shine On, Harvest Quinn

The three Js are serenading Quinn for Barbershop Quartet Day, but I don't think it's going to work. Not only are they one singer short for a quartet, but Quinn is really more of a "Boyz R Guyz" kind of girl. Nice try, though, fellas!

They might consider getting her an adorable little animal friend for National Pet Day instead, but then again her experience at the pet store might have soured her on animals as well. They really can't win with that one, can they?

Fanfic Update!
  • Brittany - Party Time, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Daria watched Jamie leave. 'Quinn’s already causing trouble!' 'I’ll tell Andrea,' Donna responded."

  • A Comedy of Manors (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Daria knew something was wrong when she woke up and realized that the blurry darkness in front of her eyes was not the same blurry darkness she usually woke up to."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 61): "So it all comes down to this. Daniel thought as he sat down in one of the two black chairs placed in front of Ms. Li's desk."

  • Fifteenth Doctor Adventures, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "It was a dreary day. It had been pouring rain since there was enough light to see by that morning."

  • Lie Fishing (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "We see two identical steel bridges crossing the canal at opposite ends. They are the Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge. Cut to just west of the Bourne Bridge and we see a railroad bridge across the canal that looks like London's Tower Bridge." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Shut Up, Chuck! (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "As she got ready for work, Rose sprayed a blend of water and conditioner into her hair to rejuvenate the curls and began to reflect on how her life was going."

If You're Going Through Buxton Ridge, Keep Going!

Jake's looking quite distinguished (among other things) for Winston Churchill Day, but I wouldn't expect any quotable speeches from him. Unless "Gah, dammit!" is your kind of inspirational phrase.

If Jake wants everyone to call him Winston Churchill now, then today's the right day for it: Name Yourself Day! Dibs on Esmerelda.

Bottled Up

I think Jesse has taken National Beer Day much too far, but I guess he doesn't seem upset about it. I suspect Kevin's going to be celebrating this one, either by smashing cans on his head or singing all the way down from ninety-nine. Anyone else doubtful that he can count to ninety-nine at all, let alone backwards?

Today is also the anniversary for the episodes "This Year's Model" in 1997 and "I Loathe a Parade" in 2000. The Fashion Club got plenty of chances to pose in both, and Daria managed to torpedo their efforts both times. Everyone got to use their strengths!

Fanfic Update!
  • And So The American Experiment Begins, by Lady Evil (part 5): "Helen went upstairs to get her daughters. 'Girls, both of the boys are here. Oh, Quinn, you look lovely! That hairdo is so cute!'"

  • Common Ground (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (part 3): "'I can't believe I'm doing this,' Daria spoke to Godzilla as she brushed her hair. 'I'm going into a movie theater full of little kids just so I can watch something I love way too much from my childhood.'"

  • The Creation of Beauty, by Crow Jones (part 3): "Quinn looked in the mirror at the damage her sister did yesterday. Her cheek had completely healed from the initial slap that she had landed, that was good."

  • Daria and Jane Discuss... Why the Morgendorffers Don't Celebrate Easter (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "JANE: 'Hey Daria.' DARIA: 'What Jane?' JANE: 'You know that Easter is tomorrow and I was wondering...'"

  • Daria on the Trail (Daria Landing In Another Fanfiction: An Experiment), by Meester_Lee (part 3): "Oh, boy, she thought. I’m definitely back in the Wild West era."

  • Too Sexy For Her Brain (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Daria and Anderson are hastily throwing their clothes back on. Both of them visibly regret what they did the night before."

It Was One Slice Too Many....

Looks like Daria and Jane overdid it for Deep Dish Pizza Day, but someone should have warned them that deep dish is more filling than regular pizza. Not that that would have stopped them. For those two, "pizza" and "moderation" don't go together.

How About a Party of One?

Daria's really not into World Party Day, but given the kind of people she's with, can you blame her? My favorite parties are smaller affairs, quieter and cozy. It's reading, okay? It's sitting alone at home and reading.

Today is also Find a Rainbow Day, and if you can't find one, just ask Kevin. Apparently he's good at both creating rainbows and knocking down doors.

Fanfic Update!
  • And So The American Experiment Begins, by Lady Evil (part 4): "'Do you seriously call this a maze?' Ms. Barch asked as Brittany put a slice of American cheese on a maze on the back of a box of Cocoa Puffs."

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 11): "The Doctor and Felicia entered a large underground chamber from the staircase they had just descended. 'He must’ve extended a natural cave,' Felicia said."

  • I STAY, by O-L-D-D (part 6): "There was only one other time Jane had seen Daria in a bedraggled state and that was during their failed trip to Alternapalooza."

  • Tommy The Terrible (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim has sinced calmed down and is trying to coax Tommy into literally coming out of the closet."

  • Too Sexy For Her Brain (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "The bathroom door opens. Daria emerges with wet hair wearing a bathrobe, indicating that she's just taken a shower. Carrying her sleepwear in a bundle she makes her way down stairs." (Part 2)

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover XV: A New Era In Crossovers), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "A young Pokemon trainer from Lawndale had finally earned enough gym badges to challenge the gym in his hometown, and with his partner, Hawlucha, he had just made quick work of the last trainer he needed to defeat before finally taking on the leader himself: Trent."

April Fool...and May...and June...and July....

I can't think of anyone more appropriate to play the fool for April Fools' Day than O'Neill, although it would be nice if he could be just a little less clueless on the other 364 days of the year. Just remember: don't believe anything anyone tells you today. Except for that part about not believing things people tell you. You can believe that.

Hey, remember when all of our possessions rose up in revolt against us and overthrew civilization as we knew it? Good times.
