Maybe Jane Still Has That Rollerball

I think that Daria is going to want to celebrate National Tattoo Removal Day now that she and Tom have broken up. On the bright side, now she can get a new tattoo, perhaps one from a magazine. I'm sure Trent has a few she could borrow for inspiration.

Given her pain tolerance (or lack thereof), Daria would probably rather observe Love Your Bookshop Day instead. Doesn't matter if it's a local used bookshop or Books By the Ton; if they sell books then she'll be happy!

Happy birthday to Doc Holliday, who was born on this day in 1851 and is significant to fandom because of his role in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Not to be confused with the O.K. to Cry Corral, which was probably far less appealing than being shot at by horse thieves.

Take a Look, It's in a Book!

Daria is suggesting that you celebrate Read a Book Day, but not so much for the enrichment it will provide and more for the hope that it will encourage you to leave her alone. I think it goes without saying that Daria and indeed most of the Daria fandom will be participating in this one, today and every other day as well.

However, try not to use reading as an excuse to put off any important tasks, because it's Fight Procrastination Day! I'll definitely fight procrastination...later on.

I guess you could call me lazy, but that's okay because it's also National Lazy Mom’s Day and I qualify! I don't think Helen will be joining me for this one, though.

Nothing Like Catching Up With Your Best Frenemy!

It might look like Linda and Helen are calling to wish each other a happy National Women's Day, but we all know better, don't we? Obviously they're just using the day as an excuse to make passive-aggressive insults and try to one-up each other on who's more happy and successful. As usual.

Meanwhile, Daria will just stay out of the battle area and enjoy Book Lover’s Day by, of course, reading. Not that she needs a specific holiday to do that, but it's nice to be able to claim that she's participating in something once Helen gets off the phone.

Trent and Jesse, however, can pull out their old records and celebrate Frank Zappa Day! I hope they don't get into another argument about whether he sounds better digital versus analog. It's just going to end in a fish sticks commercial.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 39): "The sleepy town of Lawndale, Pennsylvania had fallen into deep mourning and shock."

  • Full Green Jacket, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "Daria trudged miserably through Jim's Paintballing Jungle, wishing with every step that she was doing something more interesting like reading a book or counting the cracks in her ceiling or even sitting through one of Mr. O'Neill's self-esteem classes. At least in class she wasn't expected to do any physical activity."

  • Homecoming, by davidfalkayn (part 30): "'So, you’re a lieutenant commander, Angie?' 'Yeah.' Angie responded with a smile as she cinched her saddle tight."

Tweeting Before Twitter

Daria has certainly gotten into the spirit of Whistleblower Day, although the day is more about people reporting corruption than literal whistles. Still, this could be a good opportunity to expose Ms. Li's many crimes! Just kidding...there isn't enough time in the world to document all of those.

Perhaps it would help if Daria enlisted Jane to assist, especially because it's International Day of Friendship. Nothing says friendship like taking on The Man...which in this case is a woman.

Let's be honest, though: Daria's far more likely to stay home with a good book in honor of Paperback Book Day than take on a broken system. I don't blame her, because books of any binding are generally more appealing than, well, anything else.

Rah, Rah, RAWR!

Brittany is daring anyone who's brave enough to just try to celebrate Slay a Dragon Day. I'd advise against it, though, because she can be vicious even when she isn't a fifty-foot-tall fire-breathing monster.

Everyone would be better off heading to the "cinema" for Movie Theatre Day instead, and you can even bring vegetables to throw at the screen if you want! If Jake is there, please tell him that "the crow flies at midnight." Or was it "the pigeons are at rest"?

On second thought, perhaps it would be safer to just stay home and enjoy World Book Day. I know that's what Daria would do, and I happen to think it's a great idea.

Fanfic Update!
  • Homecoming, by davidfalkayn (part 23): "'I think that’s the first time I’ve had real homemade blueberry pancakes.' Luciano exclaimed with delight as he gulped down the last morsel on his plate."

  • Spider Quinn 08 The Three Misfits, by cfardellbrenorenz29 (part 3): "Then there was an interruption 'Quinn!' It was Ted Dewit-Clinton, who had just entered the store."

  • The Witch and The Ring, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (COMPLETE!): "The sudden sickness and death of Sandi Griffin became the greatest medical mystery that the town had ever known."

Maybe Just Read a Book About Dragons Instead?

I'm pretty sure that any knight that tries to celebrate Slay a Dragon Day is going to be in for a big disappointment. And a painful death. Brittany does not look like she's in the mood for any disrespect, so Kevin in particular had better keep his distance today.

Daria, on the other hand, would rather slay her TBR pile in honor of World Book Day, and I will happily join her. Readers unite, but quietly so we don't disturb each other's concentration.

Maybe She Should Get a Tattoo of a Bookshop!

I think Daria's going to want to celebrate National Tattoo Removal Day, because now that she and Tom have broken up that tattoo is going to be deeply awkward. Although it will definitely piss off her grandmother, so maybe it's worth keeping for that alone?

Today is also Love Your Bookshop Day, so once Daria's done getting that tattoo removed she should stop by Books by the Ton for some new reading material. Maybe something about caring for newly-removed tattoos?

Let's Hear it for the Ladies!

Looks like Helen just found out that today is National Women's Day, but if you think she's going to use the day as an excuse to take some time off, then think again. I mean, have you even met Helen?

If she did ever decide to take some time off, I can think of no better way to spend it than reading on this lovely Book Lover's Day. I assume it goes without saying that Daria is already on it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Big In Japan, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim was speaking Japanese to a street vendor while Quinn and the triplets watched nervously. It was turning out to be a disasterous evening." (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9)

  • Bravo Zulu - A Lawndale High Story, by benson (part 2): "Two days until classes began, and Principal Sloan sat in his office just a couple hours after sunrise, the phone in his hand."

  • In Media Les, by nachobra (part 1): "Daria had turned the music off about an hour into the drive once the sound of the rain hitting the car began to drown out the stereo."

They Do Call Him "Mad Mack"

Mack's busy concocting...something...for World Laboratory Day! Whatever it is, I don't think Kevin's going to like the results.

Today is also World Book Day, so take the opportunity to curl up with some nice reading material. Except Kevin, who not only doesn't read but will be too busy taste-testing Mack's latest creation.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (parts 27 and 28): "Despite her fear and worry about Dad, Rikka woke in a good mood. That was the first time she remembered dreaming about her mother in a long time, and it was not only good to see her again but also to know that while she might be dead, she was out there watching over her." (Part 28)

  • Fast Forward, by damnshawtysahottie (part 1): "His stubble brushed against my left cheek as the camera started rolling. We had over 1 million subscribers as we were a part of the latest new craze of cremation on ‘Pizza Hut’. But that’s beside the point."

  • Flames, by atiyatortilla (parts 1 and 2): "Thin beads of sweat rolled down her neck as Daria fumbled to open Jane’s front door. Even with her new key, the lock felt strange and complicated." (Part 2)

  • Is It Fall Yet? Part II, by WildDogJJ (part 2): "Daria, Jane, Quinn, Jim and the triplets were loading their luggage into the back of Santino's SUV."

  • The Lawndale File - Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer Agents? At Lawndale High? Jane Lane Who are these 'different ones'?"

  • The Past in the Present, by Linnofthewoods (parts 2 and 3): "Daria tore out and crumpled another sheet of paper from her notebook. This skit just wasn't coming together no matter what she did." (Part 3)

  • Tommy's War (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "The whole family, including Daria, is seated at the kitchen table having breakfast." (Part 2)

  • Young Americans, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "OK, when do I ask her? Jamie thought as he walked to the cafeteria. Lunch? I don’t really want anyone seeing us together after the embarrassing way she asked me to the spring fling. Maybe I better just wait until after school." (Part 3)

Gimme a B! Gimme a O! Gimme a O! Gimme a K!

The Lawndale High cheerleaders are shocked to find out that cheerleading officially began on this day in 1898. That's right, cheerleading is old! Gasp! Horror!

For those not inclined toward cheering for athletes, today is also Book Lovers Day. I suspect most of Daria fandom will be celebrating this one, not to mention Daria herself.

Schrödinger's Reader

Don't disturb Daria right now, because she's observing Young Readers Day. That's some serious dedication to a holiday, considering she had to go back in time to do it! I'd ask her what the secret of time travel is except she just got to a good part and I can't bear to interrupt her reading. Young, old, or in between, please enjoy a good book today!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Awkward Phase (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "While their father prattled about a bunch of old film that Mad Dog had shot years ago and saying that a lot of happy memories were coming back to him, his daughters mostly tuned him out in favor of the more recent family video of Daria's third birthday party."

  • Beginnings (Pasta's Never-Ending Ideas Thread 2), by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "There was something almost charming about the small suburb of Lawndale...if you chose to overlook the unstable landfill and utterly boring scenery."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (part 51): "Daria's suspicions about the new boys proved correct. The three boys banded together and started making trouble for their classmates."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 12): "The impact that woke Erin threw her from the bed. Her first realisation was the approaching floor. Sitting up she gently tested her teeth and nose both of which felt broken. 'Ow! My face' she said."

  • Flight, by Princess_Pasta (part 4): "Dr. Jasmine Mackenzie was a whip smart woman with the patience of a saint. She was good looking for mid-forties, dark-skinned with a cascade of deadlocks that she kept bound by a thick band. Out of all the therapists that Daria had cycled through, she was the toughest nut to crack."

  • When Tony Comes Marching Home (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (part 1): "A young Tony Carbone is at HQ. Tony has a buzz cut and an angry scowl despite the fact that he's at a party. His Ranger batallion is having a Christmas party before going on holiday leave. One of his fellow Rangers, a red haired guy named Dennis, walks up to him."

A Book and a Sandwich...What Could Be Better?

Let's not get desperate here. It might be National Sandwich Day, but I'd like to think we can come up with a better option than "antique sandwich Jane just peeled off of Daria's butt." For example, Earl and Barbara just cooked up a new batch of grilled cheese that they'd be happy to--on second thought, let me have another look at that PBJ Jane found.

If, like me, you're having doubts about the whole sandwich thing, then let me invite you to celebrate Book Lovers Day instead. It's well-suited to Daria fans and less likely to give you indigestion.

"It's a richer tone!"

Trent and Jesse are busy enjoying some Zappa in both analog and digital for Frank Zappa Day. Sadly, I think the nuance (like most things) is lost on Jesse.

While those two get out the aluminum foil, Daria will instead be celebrating Book Lover's Day by--what else?--reading a book. I might recommend Thoreau's Walden, which was published on this day in 1854. Did you know he was Jane Fonda's father in real life, too?

Fanfic Update!
  • California Screamin' (Quinn, Season 5), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn is driving while Jim is in the passenger seat and Storm is in the back seat. Quinn: So, which exit do we take again? Jim: 17. We take a left on Van Nuys, then a right on Ventura followed by a right on Sherman Oaks." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Cards, by tafka (COMPLETE!): "'Um, since we're like not an official club any more, I thought instead of looking at back issues of Waif, we could play a card game.' Stacy said, rummaging through her bag."

  • Changing Lanes, by midnightabyss86 (part 16): "'Quinn! Your date is here!' Jake called across the house. 'Date? Where? I can take him!' said Jamie, looking around frantically. 'Uh...' 'Daddy, I told you,' said Quinn, coming down the stairs and putting on a light jacket, 'Jamie and I are just going out to study.'"

  • Dear Diary, by Rémi (COMPLETE!): "Dear diary, That tour at Middelton College turned out stranger than I thought it would."

  • A Simple Afternoon, by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "As Jane put the finishing touches on her latest painting—a pale woman, evocative of the best Gothic revenants—Daria walked into her room and tossed her backpack onto Jane's bed before flopping face-first into her quilts. 'Shoot me. Right in the head.'"

  • Superiors, by ST91 (prologue and part 1): "The scientists had said that everything would be fine. They had assured that there would be no damage to things or people. They were wrong." (Part 1)

  • Tom Riddle's War, by Meester Lee (COMPLETE!): "Tom Riddle sat with his father and his mother and listened to the wireless. The King was giving a speech, a speech which in so many words said that the British people would band together, stand up to tyranny, defeat the Nazis, then go on to create some post-war utopia where all would live in peace and plenty."

Two Holidays For Brains

Mack is gleefully observing World Laboratory Day, and I assume he's concocting some kind of potion that will prevent Kevin from calling him anything but "Mack." Future Daria will probably celebrate with another double shift at the gene splicing lab.

Today is also a holiday that should be relevant to all Daria fans, World Book Day. I hope I don't have to explain how best to celebrate this one.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Answer, My Friend, is Blowing Something Up (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Helen and Jake looked at each other, beaming as they shared the happiest moment of their lives: their wedding day. Out loud, they recited in unison, 'Under an open sky and upon sacred ground, I acknowledge the oneness of the universe. May the cosmic forces bless our union and make it a journey of enlightenment.'"

  • Cuckoos On Infinite Earths: Who's That Girl?, by Charles RB, Brother Grimace, and Roentgen (parts 1 - 4): "Years ago, the multiverse burned. Four hundred and eighty three realities were snuffed out, twice that number decimated, a thousand left in disarray by 'minor' disruption or dimensional aftershocks, and the watchmen for reality were slaughtered in their multitudes - Judith was not called 'Worldburner' for nothing." (Part 2 by Brother Grimace) (Part 3 by Roentgen) (Part 4 by Charles RB)

  • Dog Whistle (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'So what is it you want to show me?' Tom loaded up the video with a grin akin to a crocodile who spies Captain Hook taking a swim."

  • The Emasculation of Jim Carbone (Quinn, Season 4), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn is seated behind her desk meeting with a prospective client. The client is a handsome man in his early forties. He has slicked back dark hair, a chisled face and a perfectly slender build and wears a nice business suit. Something about him makes Quinn uncomfortable, however." (Part 2)

  • Smash & Grab, by Erin M. (part 2): "This file will serve as my personal encrypted notes for the undertaking which Sunset Shimmer has brought to us. As I've documented elsewhere, when we all met in high school, magic from the other dimensional land of Equestrian had leaked through to our world, causing a variety of issues and problems."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries : Thread #2), by Brother Grimace (parts 117 and 118): "'So, how much are your families worth?' Julia and Zoey, food in their mouths, stopped in mid-chew at Quinn's question; beside her, Sandi rolled her eyes (even though she was also curious about the answer)." (Part 118)

Once Upon a Slumber Party....

Daria's gotten into the spirit of Young Readers Day, but I'm not sure if the other girls feel the same way. It could be Daria's melodious reading voice or it could be the subject matter, but either way this is clearly not the evening those kids had in mind.

Today is also World Diabetes Day, so be sure to keep Jane's warning in mind:

Mr. O'Neill - You know what they say, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.

Jane - Not if you're diabetic.

Did You Know He Was Jane Fonda's Father in Real Life, Too?

Daria would like a bit of peace and quiet so she can enjoy Book Lover's Day, but she isn't likely to get it. She might have better luck if she read Walden, which was published on this day in 1854. Or, rather, she might have better luck if she goes to Walden and enjoys the isolation. I'm sure something would end up ruining it for her, though. Either Quinn would find her or she'd find out no one will deliver pizza to the wilderness. It's always something, isn't it?

  • La La La La La, by GrrHatLet (COMPLETE!): "It had been such a quiet evening. 'BUT MO-OM!' 'Had' being the optimum word."

Is This a Book I See Before Me?

Mack's wishing a very happy birthday to William Shakespeare, who was born on this day in 1564. Shakespeare's plays get too many in-show references for me to start listing them out, but go ahead and share your favorites in the comments!

Appropriately enough, today is also World Book Day! Celebrate by reading one of Shakespeare's plays, or anything else you feel like reading. Daria's got dibs on Black Beauty.

I Read, Therefore I Am

Daria is set for Book Lovers Day, and I hope you are, too! Knowing this fandom, I'm sure everyone's celebrating this one.

Still, if you need some ideas for reading material , may I suggest Albert Camus, who was born on this day in 1913? If you do, make sure you remember to coordinate your wardrobe first. I recommend "pseudo-intellectual poser with accessories from the street fair."

Shhhhh!

Daria's got the right idea for Book Lover's Day, but she'd like everyone to please be more quiet while she reads. Preferably in another room. Or, better still, in another country.

If you're looking for something to read yourself, why not pick up Walden by Henry David Thoreau, first published on this day in 1854. Did you know he was Jane Fonda's father in real life, too?

Quiet, Please!

Today is Book Lover's Day! I doubt I have to encourage most of the people in this fandom to pick up a book today, but at least we can enjoy having a holiday made just for us!

If you need any suggestions, I might recommend Thoreau's Walden, which was published on this day in 1854. Remember, though, that Thoreau "was just mad at Jane Fonda. You know, he was her father in real life, too?"

Thank you, Brittany.
