Words and Pictures!

Jake's all ready to paint a masterpiece in honor of Vincent van Gogh's birth on this day in 1853, but I think cutting off his ear was a step too far. If nothing else, how will he hear Daria's critique of his artwork?

Then again, Daria might be too busy re-reading Black Beauty to celebrate the anniversary of Anna Sewell's birth on this day in 1820. We know it's one of her childhood favorites, but it may also come with memories of her parents arguing. So maybe she'd better pick something else.

Fanfic Update!
  • Analyze Jim (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim was back for another therapy session. He sat in the patient's chair hanging his head in shame over this. He was ashamed of the fact that he even needed help in the first place." (Part 3)

  • And So The American Experiment Begins, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "In the Morgendorffer garage, Quinn watched from the doorway as Alfred sanded and blew on a piece of wood. She tried not to faint with ecstasy at the sight." (Part 3)

  • Common Ground (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (part 2): "The following late afternoon, Daria emerged from the subway car holding her breath with a disgusted expression; she'd been stuck sitting next to a man who smelled so bad that she wondered if his stench could peel paint off of walls."

  • Daria on the Trail (Daria Landing In Another Fanfiction: An Experiment), by Meester_Lee (part 2): "Despite Daria’s suspicions and the temptation to give in to panic, she knew that observation and keeping a clear head were the keys to survival."

  • Tommy The Terrible (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Both Quinn and Jim are dressed in their Sunday best on account of it being Sunday morning. Tommy, Timmy and Teddy are wearing suits and ties. None of the kids are thrilled to dress like this." (Part 2)

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 28): "Breeze hit the REWIND and PLAY buttons to listen to her daughter’s message again."

I'm Sure It's Just a Mild Cold....

Either Trent is really appreciating Weed Appreciation Day or he's just super content about something. His laid-back attitude and recurring cough make me suspect the former, but he'll probably be disappointed to learn that the weed in question is not of the recreational type.

Today is also the anniversary of the movie The Birds, which was released on this day in 1963. If any birds attack, just put Quinn in charge of them. They don't seem to last long around her!

Sandi REALLY Has a Big Mouth!

In a switcheroo, a lady looks like a dude because Sandi's impersonating Steven Tyler for the singer's birthday today! Just so you're all aware, that was Steven Tyler, not Steven Taylor. As far as I know, Steven Tyler doesn't decorate his home in early petting zoo.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Lucky Strike" in 2001. Not only did that episode give us a rare DeMartino Triumphant moment, but he also got a lot of good lines. I mean, "This is Goodwill polyester I've been sweating in all night. I want to picket naked!"? Hilarious.

Fanfic Update!
  • America the Beautiful, by Lady Evil (part 4): "In the school auditorium, Ms. Li stood on stage at the podium during a school assembly."

  • Analyze Jim (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (part 1): "The Carbone family (Quinn, Jim, Tommy, Timmy and Teddy) , plus Daria, are sitting down at the kitchen table having dinner. Tommy was telling an animated story about his day."

  • And So The American Experiment Begins, by Lady Evil (part 1): "In Ms. Barch's class, Ms, Barch was describing how positive reinforcement affected animal behavior."

  • Ashtrapped (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "The caravanner studied the silt strider's exposed brain with watchful eyes. She raised her right hand, hesitated for a moment, and then pressed her index and middle fingers into a whorl on the organ's gray and rubbery surface."

  • Common Ground (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (part 1): "It had been a long day of work and brainstorming for Daria Morgendorffer. She finally felt satisfied enough with her script for 'Late Night with Dennis Monahan.'"

  • Did I Really Just Do That? (Creative Writing - My class submissions), by neonhomer (COMPLETE!): "'So? What do you think?' Matt said to his father as they sat at the kitchen table during dinner."

  • Twenty Years Later, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Daria Morgendorffer sat alone in her apartment in Hells Kitchen. She just stared at the blank computer screen and wondered what the hell was wrong with her."

Ta-Daaaaaaaa!

Happy birthday to the late illusionist Harry Houdini, born on this day in 1874! Upchuck's paying homage, but I don't think Houdini went in for such flashy outfits. Also, when Houdini did his death-defying stunts the audience was hoping for his survival. Not so much for Upchuck.

Today is also an anniversary for both episodes "Cafe Disaffecto" in 1997 and "The Lost Girls" in 1999. Both episodes involve Mr. O'Neill forcing Daria to do something she really doesn't want to do, which ultimately leads to Daria instigating chaos. He never actually learns, does he?

Nyah!

While I admire Amy's devotion to National Goof Off Day, I question her decision to celebrate right in the middle of her niece's wedding. Still, I guess I can think of worse places to goof off. Carry on, Amy!

Today is also World Water Day, so stay plenty hydrated while you goof off. But maybe don't go on any school-sponsored cruises. That's a little too hydrated!

Fanfic Update!
  • One Sappy Family (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "A now 38 year old Quinn is removing cupcakes from the oven while a tripod mounted camera records." (Part 2)

  • Sick, Sad Truth (Linn's short stories), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "'Could a night of dancing at your favorite club cause you to become hypnotized and enslaved by aliens disguised as disc jockeys? Subliminal Vinyl, tonight on "Sick, Sad World!"'" (Part 2)

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 27): "It was Jake who started making the calls. He first called his Mom in Coalton, breaking the news to her about his older brother’s condition and telling her that Ben had decided to move from the Cedars of Lawndale to hospice care."

Eat Her Dust, Fashion Club!

Stacy is in it to win it for International Sports Car Racing Day, and if Sandi doesn't like the way Stacy's dressed then she can take a nice deep breath of her car's exhaust fumes as she speeds away. Me, I'm just glad the poor girl finally found something that made her happy.

Today is also Extraterrestrial Abductions Day, so I hope Artie is keeping a careful lookout. Not because he doesn't want to be abducted again, but where else will he be able to get his pants pressed so nicely?

Anything for One More Extracurricular!

Jodie is trying to re-create the first spacewalk, which happened on this day in 1965. Of course, the American flag is an awkward addition since the first spacewalk was performed by a Russian cosmonaut.

In fact, today is the perfect day for awkward moments because it's Awkward Moments Day! For Daria, every day is Awkward Moments Day when Trent's around.

Fanfic Update!
  • America the Beautiful, by Lady Evil (parts 1 - 3): "'I've said it before, I'll say it again.' said Jane as a model plugged her encyclopedia on Sick Sad World. 'You have the coolest room.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Daria Landing In Another Fan Fiction, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "Daria woke up with a start. There was something on her leg. Whatever it was, it was moving."

  • Did I Really Just Do That? (Creative Writing - My class submissions), by neonhomer (parts 3 and 4): "It has been over a month since I started a friendship with Abby. I am happy and she is happy, but I do not think Chris is very happy about it." (Part 4)

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 10): "Aialah certainly hadn’t expected Nina to be a time travelling alien from a parallel universe. The TARDIS being larger on the inside than the outside certainly was a shock."

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee0 (part 26): "Breeze Birdsong was a woman who constantly re-created herself. She firmly believed that constant re-creation was the way the universe operated and that creating herself anew was how she keep in sync with the workings of the cosmos."

Nostalgia Just Isn't What it Used to Be

Helen and Jake are meeting up with their hippie friends Willow and Coyote to reminisce about their Sixties lifestyle because it was on this day in 1998 that the episode "That Was Then, This is Dumb" first aired. Hey, if the show was being remade today, the Morgendorffers looking back thirty years would mean the nineties. Holy cow, when did I get so old?

An Anti-Social Butterfly

Daria's gone a little overboard with Learn about Butterflies Day, but I guess pollinating flowers is still better than dealing with Quinn. It must be awfully hard to read books, though.

Today is also National Potato Chip Day, so take your pick of flat or ridgy!

Finally, I hope you didn't forget to turn your clocks forward one hour last night for Daylight Saving Time, which is still a thing for some reason.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Creation of Beauty, by Crow Jones (part 1): "'So, how do you feel like you did on the assignment Mr. Oniell gave us? It was about your favorite subject.'"

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 38): "Anton looked at Arnison and said flatly, 'I am into their systems command software. I have routed the docking release to the blue button over there. If we have to use it, I have set up a command block so that once activated it cannot be recalled.'"

  • Day Tripped (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "'Jess, I already told you, your bike is *fine*,' Trent said to his very worried friend over the phone."

  • New Americana, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "At the Mall of the Millennium, Mrs. Bennett was trying to read a map while addressing the class. It was not easy for her to be heard over the kids screaming as cars from the indoor rollercoaster speed past them." (Part 3)

  • When Daria and Jane Find Lawndale High Students that Stopped Being Polite, and Started Getting Real (Behind People's Backs) (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Normally Daria and Jane ignored the gossip, hearsay, and vicious tittle-tattle that flowed like verbal diarrhea at Lawndale High. But these were not normal times."

Plant a Campy Flower!

The ghost of Tommy Sherman is participating in Plant a Flower Day; why aren't you? I mean, just because there's still snow on the ground (at least where I am) is no excuse!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Camp Fear," which aired on this day in 2001. Feel free to celebrate by playing a game of Catch the Greased Watermelon or eating some cheese-and-cellophane sandwiches!

Jodie, Do You Even Have Time to Stalk the Night and Drain the Innocent of Blood?

If there are any would-be slayers who want to celebrate the anniversary of the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jodie's a pretty easy target right now. The show premiered on this day in 1997, and not only was Quinn a fan, but it was one of the rare real-world pop culture references on the show.

Not to be outdone, Daria has three episode anniversaries today: "The Invitation" in 1997, "Depth Takes a Holiday" in 1999, and "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" in 2000. Teenagers going to parties and supernatural elements? Why, it's practically a Buffy crossover!

Fanfic Update!
  • Before the Battle of Jazshi's World (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "It still struck her as funny that in pretty much all of human Sci-Fi fiction that humanity saw itself as 'average' and most alien species were portrayed as either being smarter, stronger, more dangerous fighters and warriors."

  • Day Tripped (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (parts 1 and 2): "'...Oh, yeah, everything's great mom.' Rose was on the phone with her mother, Veronika, as she petted her kitten, Trixie." (Part 2)

  • New Americana, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'Seventy-eight bottles of beer on the wall, seventy eight bottles of beer!' Kevin sang as the bus drove to the Mall of the Millennium. 'If one of those bottles should happen to fall, seventy-seven bottles of...'"

  • Straight from the Art (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Jane blew on her cold-numbed hands and wished she didn’t live so far north."

He's Not Exactly the Tooth Fairy

Looks like Mr. O'Neill is changing careers just in time for Dentist's Day, and in some ways it's a good switch. I mean, who needs novocaine when your voice alone can put patients to sleep?

Today is also National Frozen Food Day, so you can follow the Morgendorffers' example by eating a dinner of frozen lasagna! Er, please feel free to heat it up first, though.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Pie, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "Daria, Jane and Alfred walked down the street with their boxes of fundraising chocolate. Daria told them about the last time she had to sell chocolate for a school fundraiser." (part 3)

  • A Whale of a Time (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Mystik Spiral had spent several days camping at Venice Beach. They were flat broke and getting more than a little tired of sharing a single tent."

Nothing.

So I checked all the way in the back of the Daria Blog Fridge and couldn't find anything in particular to post about today. No relevant celebrity birthdays, no fandom-related random holidays, no episode anniversaries, not anything. So I guess this is just a post to celebrate "the idea that the negative, which is the nothingness of being and the annihilating power both together, is nothingness." Or you can chime in with comments if there's something going on today that you think is worthy of mention here.

Time to Go Through Your Unused Junk!

Jake and Helen are having a little stroll down Memory Lane for Old Stuff Day! They'd better be careful, because from there it's a very easy detour onto Massive Argument Boulevard.

Hey, speaking of arguments, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Quinn the Brain" on this day in 1998. Fandom has debated over whether Daria changing into Quinn's outfit means she's secretly super hot for so long that I'm surprised the debate hasn't shifted to whether that dead horse smeared on the ground is super hot.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Pie, by Lady Evil (part 1): "Alfred read the note that had been slipped in his locker."

  • Garden Variety (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "It was a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, and one of the days Rose had devoted to volunteering at the Landon Community Garden. She was particularly excited this time because Trent and his sister Jane were meeting her there."

  • Party in the USA, by Lady Evil (part 3): "Quinn crouched behind the ceramic tiger and came up with a plan. It was a simple one. All she had to do was untie one of her rose dawn suede Vans, pretend to trip over a lace and let Alfred catch her."

  • Perfection, by Tentaculiferous (COMPLETE!): "Quinn was so perfect. Stacy was staring at her bouncy sleek red hair hanging over the desk in front of her, tuning out Mr. DeMartino’s rants in favor of a more pleasing subject: Quinn."

  • The Wedding Wringer (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, are you hungry? Huh?' Not that Satheri needed to ask. Tollie always wanted a snack."
