Have a Magical Birthday!

When J. K. Rowling, who was born on this day in 1965, first wrote about witches and wizards in her Harry Potter books, I doubt this is what she had in mind. Still, there are quite a lot of Harry Potter/Daria crossover fanfics out there, so it's worth mentioning here. Among them are "Daria Morgendorffer and the Magic McGuffin" by Ranger Thorne, "Daria Morgenpotter & The New Same-Old, Same-Old" by Daniel Callahan, "Harry Potter and the Flack-Jacket Mafia" by Canadibrit, "My Daria/Harry Potter Crossover" by Brother Grimace, "The One and the Other" by JPAGC, and "One Year Later" by NightGoblyn.

Happy birthday, JKR!

On Second Thought, Let's Just Call Out for Pizza

It's the Morgendorffers' favorite holiday (or is that least favorite?), National Lasagna Day! Helen's serving up the first piece, so better get in line now. Unless you prefer your food to taste, you know, good.

This also happens to be International Tiger Day, and Jane's still trying to solve the dilemma of the Lady or the Tiger. Just keep away from the hair dye and everything will be fine, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: High School Reunion, by Serrallonga (part 2): "He's a black man in his forties, dressed only with a gray jacket and a pair of red boxers with aliens drawn on them. His hairstyle reminds that of Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. He's holding a revolver in his left hand and is obviously insane, or stoned, or both."

  • In Her Footsteps, by SaraJaye (COMPLETE!): "Sandi can't ever remember her parents not fighting. Sure, they've had their good moments, times when it really seemed like they got along and loved each other, but for the most part all she remembers is yelling and screaming."

  • Oh, Danny Boy, by Indigo (part 4): "It was the night of the party and Jane had just called for Quinn. 'I managed to wake my brother up for long enough to give us a ride to the party.' Jane told Quinn."

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "As Max Tyler's band fall into obscurity and, as of time of writing, can only open for Doors tribute bands, Mystik Spiral entered 2012 in a position of relative strength. Corporate rock finally took notice."

  • Pack Mentality, by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "The warm embrace of sleep slipped away from Trent like a lover in the night despite his best efforts to hold onto his ebbing dreams. He opened his dark eyes, his room slowly swimming into focus."

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 11): "'The elusive Matthew Morgendorffer,' said an unfamiliar voice, 'my, my, my.' That wasn't Daria, but he didn't doubt that she was in on this. Play it cool, that was the trick."

  • A Rumple in Time, by RLobinske (part 1): "'I can't believe that I've been in this town for almost a year,' Daria said as she and Jane sat at a break table in the student lounge of Tesla High School. 'Time flies when you don't have a clue?' Jane said."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Brittany's World Trip), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Me and Ashley continue in our trip. This time I'm writing from Lisbon. We arrived the day before last, and already many things happened."

Walking Tall

Mrs. Bennett is having a great time on Walk on Stilts Day, or at least I hope she's on stilts. Maybe those Fuzzy Wuzzy Wee Bits actually contain dangerous levels of human growth hormone. Still, have a good one...and try not to fall off!

Today we also celebrate the anniversary of the episode "Pierce Me," which aired on this day in 1998. Daria did something stupid for a guy, and then demonstrated superhuman healing abilities. But did she ever get that tattoo Trent suggested?

Time to Piss Off the Camel Again

Daria's helping Jake celebrate Threading the Needle Day, although we could also ask Mr. DeMartino, too. Turns out Ms. Li was right: he did hem those pants himself.

Fanfic Update!
  • A 946430, by Brian Taylor (part 3): "The girl was happy to believe this meant he really did love her and really was concerned. For a girl who'd been Francis Hill's daughter from birth, the realization otherwise came embarrassingly slow"

  • ARC ch. 7 Another day, another pain, by ST91 (part 1): "Ouch. That was Claire's first thought when she woke up in the throes of a headache. After this, a series of questions as : where am I ? why am I naked? what happened yesterday? crowded into her mind."

  • ASPS 2, by PrecambrianStudios (part 17): "Roan couldn't think. She was deaf and blind to the world. For now, there was only one thing she could focus on: Karis Chapman. The little brat had lied to her, and as a result, over half the Mafia had been rounded up by the Fielding fuzz. She was going to pay."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 18): "Helen is coming back from the doctors being extra cautious with the icy roads. 'March 12th. Only four more months. Less than that. Oh god. I'm not ready to be a mother, again. I can't be a mother again. Not to a baby."

  • Daria, Jane, and a new sick sad world, by SpookyZalost (part 2): "the sun was setting in the village, Daria and Jane had just come back through the portal to the net after having explored a bit further. The reason was because Jane was concerned about straying too far from their bodies physically due to signal lag which might cause what she called ghost separation anxiety syndrome."

  • Dead Cynic Like Me, by peapotmaster (part 1): "Daria turned to see the Grim Reaper and a deadpanned girl in a pink shirt walk towards her. 'Great, another cartoon celebrity crossover,' said the girl."

  • Giant Size Rise to Vote, Sir, bydogsbody32 (COMPLETE!): "Senator Daria Morgendorffer polished her glasses on the cuff of her blouse, replaced them on her face, and leaned forward to speak into the microphone. 'Director Hill, perhaps you'd care to enlighten this committee about certain projects which were carried out under your former organization's aegis.'"

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 10): "It was a fine evening to go running. This was a very broad category as far as Jane Lane was concerned, as, short of a monsoon or some kind of natural disaster, there was no day or time of day when she wouldn't go running. But today was an especially fine day to her thinking."

I Toldeth Thee Not to Call Me That!

Today is Neptunalia, the festival that celebrates Neptune, the Roman god of the waters. Mack is looking majestic as Neptune in this alter ego, although I wouldn't want to be the one who calls him "Mack Daddy" while he's holding that trident.

Jake's also firing up the grill for Hot Dog Day, so come on over for the Hot Diggety Dog Eating Contest! Hey, a man's gotta get rid of a crate full of hot dogs somehow.

I'm Sure the Fashion Club Hates this Holiday

Tom just celebrated National Junk Food Day by stuffing his face full of gummi bears. Jane's about to celebrate by killing him for eating her art supplies. Let's all grab some ZooZoo Drops and Juicy Joes and watch the carnage unfold!

Speaking of brushes with death, today is also the anniversary of both "The Misery Chick" in 1997 and "Jake of Hearts" in 1999. Tommy Sherman died, and Jake nearly joined him two years later.

Fanfic Update!
  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (part 71): "On a Saturday morning, Gage, wearing only a set of black briefs, sat on a stool in Harris Studios, where he patched up an old leather jacket."

  • ASPS 2, by PrecambrianStudios (part 17): "Nevertheless, Roan was a people person and she knew it; that was also why she was a chief recruiter for the Mafia. She'd managed to induct seven new members in the past year alone."

  • Daria, Jane, and a new sick sad world, by SpookyZalost (part 1): "Daria was heading back to Lawndale, a place she hadn't been since she left this dump to move on with her life nearly a decade and a half ago."

  • Is This Adulthood?, by Princess_Pasta (part 9): "I ran my hands under warm water and scrubbed them with dish detergent while my mind wandered to more important matters. Specifically, where the hell Daria was."

  • Mine, by Vukodlak (part 10): "After the whole kiss incident things had been awkward between Jane and Daria but after a summer apart they'd been trying to patch things up but the guilt was making it impossible for them to return to normal while Daria had come clean of her betrayal right away Jane had only just worked up the courage to confess her own."

  • Old Shoe (Daria and the Gang Thread), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, uh, Jane,' Quinn said. 'It's Quinn.' 'Yeah, I know who you are,' Jane said. 'So what do you want?' 'Jane, I kissed your boyfriend.'"

  • Passion For Fashion (Iron Chef: It's always the quiet ones who...), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "Tiffany Blum-Deckler knew that if anyone from the Fashion Club could see her now, she'd be kicked out immediately. Part of her thought that wouldn't be such a bad thing."

  • Tambourine Girl, by ashk09 (part 1): "Not for the first time that night, Stacy Rowe wondered what the hell she was doing stomping her hooves out here; the mud was ankle-deep, and her dark blue tennies were glomming into the mire so much that she was probably going to have to be air-lifted to safety once the concert came to an end."

What Rhymes with "Ax"?

Trent's wishing an incredibly creepy happy birthday to Lizzie Borden, who was born on this day in 1860. Borden was tried and acquitted for murdering her father and stepmother. Looking at that alter ego, it's possible we may have solved the mystery of why Amanda and Vincent are away from home so much.

Speaking of horrific tragedies, it was on this day in 2000 that we got to see Quinn spill soda all over the front of her pants and completely humiliate herself. That's right, today's the anniversary of the episode "Groped by an Angel."

Jane Lane and the Seven Dwarves

Jane's getting in touch with her cuddly side because it was on this day in 1955 that Disneyland opened its doors for the first time. As a result, Kevin Thompson knows exactly where he's going to go after he wins the Super Bowl.

Fanfic Update!
  • Critters, by Snow-Kitty (COMPLETE!): "He heard rustling from branches above his head, and glanced up for a moment, his eye bulging in annoyance, to see the source of the irritating noise. His face lit up when he noticed three squirrels sitting in a row on one of the branches."

  • Daria and Jane: In The 'Unethical' Experiment (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 17): "Daria sees Luke's new car pull up to the gates. 'You're two minutes late.'"

  • I do (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "'So Amiga' Jane said with a smile. 'I always knew you'd end up as my sister-in-law and today is the day, mwahaahaahaaa!'"

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 9): "Matt ignored the shout and continued straight upstairs. He would not look back and he would not slam the door to his room. He would not give her the satisfaction."

  • Renewment, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Seated on a lounge chair under an umbrella in the back yard, Helen deleted a file, set her tablet computer aside and rolled her head back in frustration. 'Ugh! That was worse than Twilight fanfiction.'"

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part III), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "Without any warning or provocation Tom politely pushed past Angela Li and cut her speech for the Lawndale High graduation ceremony short. He glanced up to the sky and uttered a silent prayer for himself and those around him. He muttered an apology for what carnage he would soon unleash upon the world."

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part III), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Moar food! MOAR!' Tom Sloane bellowed at his skinny, starving servants as they gathered even more food for their morbidly obese master."

  • Without Warning, by Princess-Pasta (part 18): "Summer descended upon Lawndale quickly, bringing with it sweltering heat and high humidity. The only consolation for Jace was the fact that school was out."

  • You and I, We're Angels (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "Drowning, apparently, was supposed to be a pleasant sensation. She wouldn't know. All she'd thought as she had sunk was that she couldn't let go. Never let go."

Moo?

It's Cow Appreciation Day, but I don't recommend that you celebrate this one by sky-diving. Poor Roger found that out the hard way. But, hey, what's the point of a senseless tragedy if you can't find a little humor in it?

Today is also National Gummi Worm Day, and can Upchuck offer you a wasabi gummi fish? Actually, I don't recommend you try that, either.

Apparently Mr. D. Is Getting Really Desperate for Snacks

DeMartino is celebrating Embrace Your Geekness Day, although I don't think that's the kind of geek they meant. Since our fandom has more than its share of geeks, this holiday seems appropriate!

This is also National French Fries Day, and you have a choice. You can either order them at Chez Pierre and pay an exorbitant amount for them, or just head out for some cheese fries with Daria and Amy. I know which one I'm choosing.

Finally, today we celebrate the anniversary of the episode "Fair Enough," which aired on this day in 1998. In honor of that, Quinn is going to make a dainty garland for her head and sing.

Fanfic Update!
  • Blade Robber (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part III), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Tom had followed Elsie outside the house. She was hugely excited about something, but refused to tell Tom what, insisting that she show him instead."

  • Mine, by Vukodlak (part 9): "'Oh god!' Jane gasped looking at the laptop screen in shock. 'Did you hear what this idiot candidate for Senator in Missouri said?'"

  • My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "And so, following the usual Bromwell experience of networking, discreet 'partying' as the rest of society would call it, and lining up potential wives from a roll call of his feminine contemporaries, Tom had set out on his Grand Tour."

  • Nobody's Home, by ognawk (part 1): "Trent reached into his pocket and fished out his house keys. As he went to put them in the lock, he noticed a note taped to the front door. He pulled it off and read it."

  • Trip Down Memory Lane, by Evil Icing (part 2): "He sighed. Grandma Lane was the exact opposite of his parents: strict, disciplinary, always in a mood (did his parents even have moods?)... And she had never been too fond of him."

  • Upper Echelon, by Princess_Pasta (part 6): "Tori Jericho was lounging in her room listening to Boys R Guys. Blissfully unaware that her social standing was about to go plummeting into the abyss."

And Look Out for the Ones Shaped Like Hearts

Happy National Sugar Cookie Day, cookie lovers! Helen and Rita are going to have a batch ready for everyone soon, but first they have to figure out if the sugar is already in them. To be honest, you might be better off buying some cookies at a store.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 19): "Dammit, Morgendorffer, you're supposed to be a strong woman. What the hell happened to that? You should be happy for him, and here you're sitting here thinking only of yourself."

  • Alienation, by malakite (part 16): "It hadn't been until her mother asked why she was staring at the door that she'd realized she'd forgotten to point her eyes the conventional way."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 16): "Daria and the rest of Raft is uneasy as the days get closer and closer to Thanksgiving. The long break will be needed by many."

  • Daria 2097, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1.2): "The Morgendorffers were having dinner. It was quiet. The way all four family members liked it. However, to say that there was no communication going on would be false. There was a lot of information passing to and fro between the family members."

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (part 9): "Everyone who tried to book Mystik Spiral had a 50/50 chance of booking the wrong Mystik Spiral, due to the inherent laziness of the human species."

  • Renewment, by RLobinske (part 8): "'That song takes me back,' Helen said. 'Same here, and after all these years, we're together in California to enjoy it.'"

  • Tom Sloane, Lax Bro, by Shiva (part 23): "Mack: 'Yeah, it's me.' Daria: 'Why'd you call. H-how you'd know I was here?!'"

  • Upper Echelon, by Princess_Pasta (part 5): "The Fielding Library was the last place Tom Sloane expected to find himself but, then again, nothing else in his life was making much sense."

Now She IS a Damn Chocolate Bar!

It turns out you really are what you eat, as Mrs. Johanssen demonstrates today, which happens to be Chocolate Day. It also happens to be one of my all-time favorite holidays.

This is also a double anniversary for episodes, as both "Road Worrier" and "It Happened One Nut" aired on this day in 1997 and 1999. Interestingly, both episodes feature Daria's unpleasant interactions with nuts. In the first, she sits on a peanut butter sandwich. In the second, she has to sell nuts while--ugh--smiling.

Hooray for Overworked Lawyers!

Helen's celebrating Work-a-holics Day with great enthusiasm, but she'd better cut it short and get back to that paperwork. The firm is counting on her, after all!

Today we also observe the anniversary of the episode "Mart of Darkness," which first aired on this day in 2000. In honor of it, we will be giving out free samples and holding a command performance of Madame Butterfly in the automotive department.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 15): "Halloween was coming and all the colleges were abuzz with various parties. People were talking about costumes. Daria ignored it all. She wasn't going to any big parties. Nothing would get her to go. So she thought."

  • Jane's esteem, by EntrancedCat (part 1): "'I've never taught self-esteem to teens, Angela,' Timothy O'Neill expressed to his boss, Principal Angela Li. 'I'm not sure I have the self-confidence to give these teens the self-confidence which they so desperately need.'"

  • Trip Down Memory Lane, by Evil Icing (part 1): "Oh. That's right. For some odd reason, Jane found herself victim to a reminiscing older brother, stuck on a road trip to—make things worse—the dreaded yearly family reunion. And every year they just got worse."

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 14): "Trent and the band load up the van as they prepare to drive out to Ohio. Jane and Lindy stand in the doorway of Casa Lane. 'Keep on eye on Trent for me.' 'I'll keep a lot on him.' Lindy laughs as Jane smiles."

  • The Many Doctors, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 24): "It had been days, possibly over a week, since Felicia had disappeared into an anomaly in the TARDIS structure."

  • Playing the Game, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "Charles 'Upchuck' Ruttheimer felt numb. He still could not believe what he had done."

  • Sonoma Coma, by jtranser (part 16): "'Yes, Jane, I know I can will Kevin back into existence. But why would I want to do that?'"

  • Upper Echelon, by Princess_Pasta (part 4): "Mr. DeMartino, Daria's US History I teacher, was a haggard middle-aged man with graying black hair and cold, dark eyes. It was obvious that whatever drew him to teaching in the first place was long gone."
