Harry Potter Goes Hawaiian

Today is Ka Hae Hawaii day, or Hawaiian Flag Day, and Stacy is hula-ing for all she's worth. Of course, she won't be worth much once Sandi gets done taking her apart for wearing something as unfashionable as grass.

Also, happy birthday to J. K. Rowling, born on this day in 1965. There are a good number of Harry Potter fans in Daria fandom, so it shouldn't be surprising that there are also quite a few fanfic and fanart crossovers:

I have no doubt I'm leaving some out, so please feel free to let me know about any others in the comments.

Tasty Cheesy Noodle Goodness!

Happy National Lasagna Day, lasagna lovers! Of course, every day is National Lasagna Day at the Morgendorffer house, but maybe in honor of the holiday Helen decided to cook some entirely from scratch.

...

Okay, I'm done laughing now.

Also, space geeks will be glad to know that NASA turns 55 today. Care for some moon rock cake? Or maybe we should just stick some candles in the lasagna.

Fanfic Update!
  • As Though She Had Done It All Before..., by Shiva (part 8): "The night sky seemed to become even more spectacular as the hours flew by. Daria was sitting with Josh and Jennifer in mismatched lawn chairs in their backyard."

  • Bird Watching (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Why, oh God WHY?!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As the chickadees sang and the cardinals flew about, no doubt planning to elect a new Bird-Pope soon. • Consequences, by ST91 (part 3): "Clint took a deep breath and then knocked on the door of his brother's room. 'Who is it?' came from behind the door. 'Me.' Clint said, his voice high with tension. '**** off!' was Dario's reply."

  • Daria and Co. (Are Forced To) Read 'My Immortal' (Iron Chef; You're Standing on My Immortal), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Dammit!' Quinn complained, stomping her foot on the ground like a spoiled baby. 'You are up.' Daria said smugly before sitting back down with Ted."

"You give birth to someone, you just get an urge to keep tabs on them."

Because today is National Parents' Day, I thought it would be appropriate to show a rare moment of good parenting from Helen and Jake. Of course, it seems they got their act together just in time for the series to end, but what are you going to do? At least they got there before Daria left for college.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Pierce Me," which aired on this day in 1998. Daria did something stupid for a guy, and I think we're all waiting for that Daria/E.T. shipper fic to materialize.

Just Don't Piss Off the Camel!

Happy Threading the Needle Day! Daria's got this one covered, but Jake is providing important backup. All he needs is a tambourine.

By the way, is it sad that I actually feel kind of impressed that Jake remembered to take the shirt off before mending it with a sharp object?

Who Wants Some Hot Dog Jalapeno Hotties?

Today is National Hot Dog Day, so grab a footlong and--shut up, Upchuck. When everyone's done making their double entendre jokes about hot dogs, the Hot Diggity Dog Eating Contest can begin. I wouldn't enter if I were you, though. DeMartino looks pretty serious about this one.

Got Any Juicy Joes?

Snackers rejoice! Today is National Junk Food Day, and Daria and Tom are sharing some "borrowed" candy in celebration. Have some junk food of your choice today...dibs on the chocolate!

This is also a double anniversary: "The Misery Chick" and "Jake of Hearts" both aired on this day in 1997 and 1999. Tommy Sherman died and Jake had a brush with death. Just goes to show you that life is short...eat more junk food.

Well, That Explains the Red Stuff in the Fridge

Happy birthday to Lizzie Borden, born on this day in 1860 and notorious for the alleged murder of her parents. Trent looks ready to follow in her footsteps, if only he had any idea where his parents might be. Maybe we've solved the mystery of why Vincent and Amanda don't come home very often.

It was also in this day in 2000 that "Groped by an Angel" first aired on MTV. Quinn dabbles in spirituality, to Daria's great annoyance. My favorite moment is the entire raspberry vinaigrette scene. "I had the same dressing. I wonder if my hair will get more luminous?" "It didn't."

Please Don't Let Her Start Singing....

On this day in 1955, Disneyland opened its doors and began welcoming small children and Super Bowl winners for years to come. Jane seems surprisingly happy in her role as the Disney version of Snow White, but then again she did say she wanted to get a job with Disney in "Look Back in Annoyance." Maybe she's just trying to kiss up.

Is It Heat Stroke Yet?

Bleah. It's hot out where I am, and probably where a lot of you are, too. To those people chilling in the Southern Hemisphere I say...nothing, because it's too freaking hot for expending that kind of energy.

Since there's not a lot going on today for history, anniversaries, silly holidays, or anything else, I figured this would be a good place to talk about summer in Lawndale. Aside from Is It Fall Yet?, we didn't get a whole lot of episodes dealing with summer vacation in Lawndale. The series ended at the beginning of the summer after graduation, and the summer between Daria and Jane's sophomore and junior years was largely untouched.

This phenomenon is known as "The Lost Summer," and a handful of fanfic writers have filled in the gaps. A few people have also theorized that a few episodes (such as "Road Worrier") actually take place during the summer but were out of order in the season.

Well, what do you, the blog readers at home, think? Did Lawndale High skip a summer vacation due to budget cuts? What theory do you prefer, or do you have a new one to share? And what's your favorite Lost Summer fanfic? Talk about anything related to Daria and summer in the comments while I go stick my head in the fridge for awhile.

Sweet Ade...Quinn!

It's Barbershop Music Appreciation Day, and the three Js are in fine form even if their quartet is short by one. They're no doubt singing a love song for Quinn, who will most likely just turn up her Boys R Guyz CD to tune them out.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Fair Enough," which aired on this day in 1998. Daria and Jane survived a close encounter with a heartbroken Stacy and Upchuck barely escaped being beaten to death with his own mandolin. Hey, do they write barbershop minstrels?

Behold, 90% of Lawndale's Population!

Today is World Population Day, and the population of Lawndale is incredibly happy about it. Except for Daria, of course. I notice that this year's topic is adolescent pregnancy, which means that even the UN is pushing Greystar to get moving on The Longest Year.

A Barksdale Specialty, But Beware the Heart-Shaped Ones!

Happy National Sugar Cookie Day! Rita and Helen are working on a batch right now, but only because they weren't completely sure if the chips were already in the chocolate chip ones or not. Better safe than sorry, I suppose. Speaking of safety, if Daria shows up on your doorstep with a tray of cookies, don't let her in. Just...trust me on this.

  • Minds Touched by Madness, by welltemperedclavier (parts 1 - 3): "She opened the door just a crack, relief washing over her when she saw Jane busy at work, still in pajamas, her skinny arms making frenetic cuts across the canvas. A little abashed at her earlier concern, Daria stepped in, not quite prepared for the staggering miasma, a mix of sweat, trapped summer heat, and paint fumes wrapping around her." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • No Esteem (IC: DeMartino and Jake swapped), by Charles RB (part 7): "The police had been waiting for her at home, because you don't batter two girls and put a third in hospital with concussion and then vanish without the police being called in. Nothing she hadn't been through before."

Mmmm...Random Holidays....

Great news, everybody! It's Chocolate Day! I don't think I need to tell you how to celebrate this one, so go crazy. And remember to share!

In non-chocolate-related news, this is also the anniversary of both "Road Worrier" in 1997 and "It Happened One Nut" in 1999. Fortunately, both episodes feature peanuts, and peanuts go well with chocolate. Everyone wins!

"It's more than a quirk. I've got to confess I'm addicted to work!"

Today is Workaholics Day, the holiday custom-made for Helen Morgendorffer. Helen is celebrating at work, of course, but only for a moment before she dives right back into those depositions.

This is also the anniversary of the episode "Mart of Darkness," which first aired on this day in 2000. Come for the gummy bears, stay for the command performance of Madame Butterfly in the automotive department.

Fanfic Update!
  • Collateral (Proposed IC: My Secret Baby), by SinisterExaggerator (COMPLETE!): " There was a narrowly arced smile on her face, and the innocent glints in her eyes seemed to betray no menace. Ding a Ling a Ling A Ling! A Ling!

It's Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day! Bro and QB have whipped up some Firstdown Fudge for the occasion, but what flavors can you come up with for other Daria characters? Perhaps some Criminale Crunch for Max? Or maybe Cinnamon Cynic for Daria? Post your ideas in the comments!

Fanfic Update!
  • Adrianople (Iron Chef: Shockfest 2007!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'We're having so much fun, aren't we Quinn?' little Tad Gupty asked with a twinkle in his eye. 'Yes! Don't you wish you could babysit us forever and ever?' added his big sister Tricia. Quinn didn't respond. She was rooted to the living room couch, staring blankly at the wall."

  • Black Cloaks of Lawndale, by Waylander (part 11): "Trent said gravely, 'We'll have to sell the kiln.' 'No!' Jane didn't want to part with the kiln. Not because she could sell pottery to raise some money. The kiln was the last piece of their mother left."

  • Boiling Point (Iron Chef: Unusual Superpowers), by BF110C4 (COMPLETE!): "Daria realized she was different from an earlier age. Not different as 'freaky girl who stays in a corner reading books' different but more like 'freaky monster who should be drowned in a river' different."

  • A Bro Gets Boob-ed! (IC: Tom Sloane, Lax Bro TAKEDOWN!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Daria wasn't sure what was worse about being at Fielding Prep, having to deal with the insane and snobby faculty, the even more crazy and snobby students, or the fact that her custom made school uniform, whatever it's conservative intent, looked like what pornstars and hookers thought schoolgirls wore."

  • The Dale of Lawn, by Wassersauefer (parts 14 and 15): "That was one of the main reasons why the Archmage was so powerful, Daria had realized a long time ago. Since he was in control of a demonic castle, such creatures and those corrupted by them were easily lured into his services, as he was playing to their advantages of taking hold in this world, making it easier for him to summon whole broods of the creatures." (Part 15)

  • Daria, 38MMM, by Shiva (parts 1 and 2): "As Jake drove in his brand new Lexus down the main drag towards his daughter's new school, he was giving them nice, soothing, comforting words to ease the transition." (Part 2)

  • Daria and Jane: On the Supreme Court's Decision on Prop 8 (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Daria: 'So you heard the news?'"

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 44): "Monday at school, and Daria was walking the halls by herself. She left the house early, to avoid Jane. She had already been to her locker, picked up her books for her first few classes, and then headed to the library."

  • Darius Taylor, by Shiva (part 12): "Time seemed to speed up for Darius Taylor, even with the worry eating away at his insides over the now looming threat of the Morgendorffer's discovering him. Things were happening that let him put that worry on the backburner."

  • Drastic Times (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by breitasparrow (COMPLETE!): "The next day, Daria and Jane walked onto the school campus to find a man in his thirties with slicked-back hair and a scruffy face standing in front of the front entrance, wearing a black duster and thick sunglasses."

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 22b and 22c): "He didn't want to think of anybody as 'cuddly'. The previous night, for example … He looked at his sketching hand and saw that it had turned a blotchy red." (Part 22c)

  • Ewww (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Mafalda,' cooed Quinn, tickling her young niece. 'Mafaaaaaaald-- EWWWW! Daria, your baby just puked on me again!!'"

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie (Chapter 8), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 10): "However, as Stacy was still hyperventilating, Daria decided to try to comfort her. She tapped her lightly on the shoulder. 'There... There.'"

  • Life Isn't A Rehearsal (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by breitasparrow (COMPLETE!): "Daria knew something wasn't right when she woke up in a good mood and an original song implanted in her head."

  • Losers No More, by Shiva (part 17): "Time seemed to slow down into bullet time from David's perspective."

  • LSD, by PrecambrianStudios (part 7): "'Are we there yet?' Quinn asked Nick as he swiftly led her down the hall. Quinn knew he was quite ahead of her, as the rope that that connected them was rather taut."

  • Of All The People That Won't Be Missed, by LongSnakeMoan (part 8): "She strained against the handcuffs that bound her wrists together on her lap, throat hoarse from screaming and exhausted from the struggle."

  • Retrograde Boxing, by thecoffeeguru (part 1): "In front of her Daria saw a sea of brake lights come on, heard the screech of tires on asphalt. She jerked the wheel to the right, over correcting. The SUV spun off the road, her front bumper coming into contact with something, throwing Daria to the side. She felt a stabbing pain in her head, then darkness."

  • Ride (LLH Mini), by RLobinske (part 2): "'I'd love to be the first one to fly it. After all, it's about time a woman got first shot at a hot, new spacecraft. After all, they wouldn't even give the Mercury Thirteen a chance.'"

  • The Rival, by PrecambrianStudios (part 2): "O'Neill glanced at the clock, and seeing that he had time for the last presentation, said, 'Okay, now let's see what Ethan will enlighten us with.'"

  • She Can't Hear You If You Yell, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Jane was taking it hard. She never let on, of course, but Trent could see it."

  • Something (Slightly) Wicked This Way Comes, by macross (parts 1 - 2.5): "'Listen girls, I know it's not easy moving to a new town' he said as he glanced in the rearview mirror at his oldest daughter. 'We moved' she snorted, then went back to listening to her iPod." (Part 2) (Part 2.5)

  • This is Awful (I'm Not Kidding......You Aren't Going to Like This. Especially if You're Female) (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by PrecambrianStudios (COMPLETE!): "Daria had finally gotten to the scene she had been wanting to write for a while: the death of Melody's husband." (continued by SinisterExaggerator)

  • Tom Sloane, Lax Bro, by Shiva (part 10b): "Having stepped out of the bathroom after a quick break, Mack found himself sitting down on a nearby bench with the last person he had expected to bump into."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "'Stop the scene.' Tom dropped the terrified expression and had to ask: 'Why? It's just another zombie apocalypse scene. This is easily one of the most bearable additions to the STSNB thread'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "The tannoy system crackled to life. 'Students of Lawndale High, your attention, please.' Li's voice sounded terse and bothered (again)."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'...it's over, Daria,' Brittany said. 'It's finally over. Now we can get married!'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: MY EYES THEY BURN!!), by Silver (COMPLETE!): "'Look, if it's me getting killed, it really shouldn't be in this thread. That's all I'm saying.' Tom simply held up his hands in a gesture of placation. In the director's chair, Silver sat back and steepled his fingers."
