"...Nothing."

The Lanes are totally into Look in the Back of Your Refrigerator Day, but I wouldn't look too closely if I were them. That red stuff might be cranberry juice...but then again it might not.

If you find anything particularly pungent in your fridge, you could use it to stir up some trouble tonight. It's Mischief Night, and I'm sure Halloween will be out with her friends, plenty of toilet paper, and lots of eggs.

Dr. Shar, You've Gone Too Far!

Either Jane's observing National Frankenstein Friday or she's gone to some major lengths to improve her running skills. We know Daria has read Frankenstein because it was on the list of books O'Neill gave the class in "Write Where It Hurts." After that frustrating alternate assignment, I suspect she was wishing she'd just reread the book instead.

Mrs. Bennett is probably celebrating Plush Animal Lover's Day by collecting more Fuzzy Wuzzy Wee Bits, unless by now she's collected all of them.

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit75 (part 6): "Jennifer laid on her stomach on Daria's bed as she watched TV, her unshod feet dangling above her, moving to no particular rhythm. Sitting on the floor in front of her, Daria leaned against the bed, remote dangling loosely from her hand as she waited to mute the upcoming commercial break."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 37): "'I think I'm finally finding out what it feels like to be a Lane,' Daria said to Jane with a modicum of happiness – they were having this conversation at school, so she couldn't show too much."

  • Cynic on the High Seas (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by Kuriamo22 (COMPLETE!): "A young blond elegant looking woman in a dark purple eastern style dress sat at a ornate white cast iron table in a the middle of a vast white area drinking tea. She was the mental model for the Fleet of the Fogs Flagship of the First Oriental fleet Fast Battleship Kongo."

  • Sick of Losing Soulmates, bylulamae-golightly (part 2): "Daria woke up on the Lane's couch, still in her clothes from the previous day. It took her a moment to remember how she ended up there, but then remembered-she had fallen asleep talking to Trent."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Final Session), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'So this is our last session,' Armalin said. 'Take a seat. How are you doing?' 'Fine.' Trent tended towards brief expressions, but he appeared to have more energy."

No Pumpkins Were Shot in the Making of this Blog Post

We're less than a week away from Halloween, which makes this a good time to celebrate National Pumpkin Day. Whether you carve a jack-o-lantern or turn it into Helen's famous oatmeal pumpkin seed loaf, enjoy!

Today is also the anniversary of the Gunfight at the OK Corral in 1881. The incident resulted in more fatalities than a stay at the Okay To Cry Corral, but I'm pretty sure it was far less annoying.

To the Jane-Cave!

Jane doesn't exactly look like Batman here, but then again I don't exactly want to get hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit. In any case, today marks the anniversary of Batman creator Bob Kane's birth in 1915. Even if Jane's costume isn't quite right, we know she's always wanted to sleep upside-down and spread rabies.

This is also Food Day, and you could celebrate with whatever food you like. Cheeseless pizza, frozen lasagna, kitchen sink stew...the sky's the limit!

Fanfic Update!
  • 40 (Iron Chef: A Slacker Looks at 40), by dmsfanman (COMPLETE!): "Standing in the bathroom in a pair of pajama bottoms Trent Lane looked in the mirror and pondered the reflection looking back at him. His beard was gray. There were even a couple of gray hairs on his head that only he knew about."

  • Bond (Pasta's Never-ending Ideas Thread!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "Jane reached up to adjust an earbud, the low sound of Dream Theater successfully muffling all other noise. If she had to listen to one more second of that cheery instrumental theme song, she'd go mad."

  • Contriving Hope, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "'FORGET IT, TIMOTHY!' 'But, Anthony, I need counselors for my OK To Cry Corral. None of my students have taken interest in making a difference.'"

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 36): "'Honey, I'm home,' Daria called in a monotone, tongue firmly in cheek, as she let herself into Casa Lane by the back door. 'Hey Daria,' Trent answered with a smile."

  • It's Supernatural, Daria, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'New teacher today.' 'What? What class?' 'Mr. Chance's, his wife just had the baby and yadda, yadda, yadda......'"

  • A Moment Behind the Mask, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "'And so completes our time of raising the dead and causing mass panic in this listless town,' Daria stated, her deadpan tone infecting every word she spouted."

  • Unnamed story (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'There,' Quinn said, positioning the football. 'That's about right, isn't it?' 'Okay, Jeffy,' she said, the ball balanced between the ground and her fingertips. 'I'll hold the ball, and you come running up and kick it.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: A Slacker Looks at 40), by darbanville (COMPLETE!): "Trent laid back on his bed looking around his room. Things hadn't changed much since high school."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes that should be: Pacific Rimmers), by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "Daria was very tired. The Lawndale did not understand her unique pseudo-asymmetric magnetic field and gave her a magnetic harmonisation class."

  • Time (Iron Chef: A Slacker Looks at 40), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "Trent looked good for his age; at least that's what everyone was always telling him. He didn't pay much attention to his appearance, even in his younger days, which meant that the barely noticed the fine lines on his face or the few extra pounds."

"Munch a bunch of your nutty friend's lunch!"

Jake's preparing to eat a cashew, the CEO of nuts, for National Nut Day. If peanuts have hijacked your brain, stop by and see Daria at It's a Nutty, Nutty, Nutty World and get some free nuts. Well, they're not technically free as long as Daria smiles...but I'll take those odds.

Sandi's, Brad's, or Bram's Dracula?

Sandi is looking more like Gary Oldman's Dracula than Bela Lugosi's, but the latter was born on this day in 1882. Honestly, though, Sandi's understanding of vampires probably comes closest to Bella Swan than anything else. I shudder to think what that Dracula book report looked like.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Appointment, by elainefr (part 2): "I'm getting chemotherapy... I wonder how it'll feel. They said to show up early. Me looking at clocks...odd. I guess it was good to get all of that other stuff done. The quicker I get through that, the sooner I can be done."

  • Closing the Door, by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "Daria's room was empty. The walls were bare. The spot where her bed had been was noticeably unvacuumed, and in the hallway she could hear the movers struggling to bring her desk out to the truck."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by Roentgen (parts 43 and 44): "Phanis-Kala was propped up with alacrity by Selina Kyle. 'All right, greenie,' she said. 'I've got a nice cell waiting for you.'" (Part 44 by Roentgen)

  • Defender of the Faith, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "In the Great Palace of Constantinople, a woman who had lived for thousands of years lay in a luxurious bed, each breath a more heroic struggle than the labors of Hercules."

  • Imaginary Closure, by breitasparrow (COMPLETE!): "The Morgendorffers walked through the living room door without a sound. Quinn didn't even speak her opinions on the casket choice or floral arrangements. She knew Daria wouldn't want to hear a word of it right now."

  • It's A Good Life, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'Are you happy with your life?' She nodded thinking about just how good things were for her. 'Yes, I am. What about you? Are you happy with your life?' He nodded."

  • To Reflect, by Vlora (parts 1 and 2): "'What're you gonna do for your birthday?' 'Become legally a year older.' 'As in plans?'" (Part 2)

So Much for the New Jake!

Jake's upset because he just found out that it's No Beard Day, and he's got to go shave right away. Quinn's probably relieved; if goatees were "two years ago" in 1998 then by now they must be...well, probably back "in" again.

Helen Asked Marianne to Pick Up a Card for Her, Too

Eric just dropped by because he remembered that it's Bosses Day and he's worried Helen's too busy on their latest case to send him a card. Not to worry, Eric; Helen told Marianne to take care of it well in advance!

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit75 (part 5): "With a growl of frustration, Jennifer balled up the sheet of paper and threw it at the kitchen garbage can, missing it entirely. The ball landed in a pile of other paper balls, rolling around until it found a spot in which to settle."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 35): "'How was the movie?' Daria asked Jane the next day, after first period, allowing for her friend to properly wake up."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by cfardell_Brenorenz29, Roentgen, Brother Grimace, and EntrancedCat (parts 39 - 42): "'Uh oh!' Crichton said when he returned to the security section. 'What?' Daria asked. 'Kyle to Morgendorffer. We have company! Deck 3, Section 12.'" (Part 40 by Roentgen) (Part 41 by Brother Grimace) (Part 42 by EntrancedCat)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: No Country For Unpleasant Old Men, by Meester_Lee (part 2d): "Arcturus had expected the charter jet to land, refuel, and take off again. Neither he nor the other passengers expected a private Muggle aircraft to pancake on the runway and close it for several hours."

  • Ph. B (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Upon retrospect, Daria had to admit that her relationship with Brittany was very pleasant. However, there were bumps."

  • A Resentful Cynic ch. 7 Another day, another pain, by ST91 (part 4): "When Daria woke up it was almost evening. For a moment Daria was confused because she hadn't her glasses so she could see nothing except spots. Among the various spots she seemed to see a red one so she said: 'Jane? Is that you?'"

  • Sick of Losing Soulmates, by lulamae-golightly (part 1): "Jet lag was a hell of a thing. Daria had greeted her family one by one: her mother exclaiming excitedly that she looked so grown up!, her father asking how college was going, and Quinn giving her a smothering hug."

  • A Turn-up For the Books (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked at the elderly woman sitting across from her in a room at the Better Days Nursing Home and then back down at the papers in her hand. 'Melody Powers sighed as she began picking what was left of Misha out of her hair,' she continued reading out loud."

Got Any Chocolate?

Quinn's got you covered for National Dessert Day, but I'm surprised she's willing to be so close to so much sugar, fat, and calories. I mean, what would the Fashion Club say?

Max should know that it's also Be Bald and Free Day, and while he's certainly bald I don't know if he's free. He claims to be a badass criminale, but we all know better.

Today's the Day for Frustrated Farmers

Helen's prepared for Old Farmer's Day, although perhaps Trent would be a better choice. He was suggested as the most likely candidate to become a farmer that gets paid not to grow anything.

Today is also Moment of Frustration Day, which I'm sure Mr. DeMartino will be celebrating. Many times. Every day. For the rest of his life.

Fanfic Update!
  • Big Sister Is Watching You, by abe (part 1): "When it comes to seeking a summer job, the wages of procrastination are embarrassment, vexation, and a significant chance of chaos or calamity — at least if one's mother is Helen Morgendorffer."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by EntrancedCat and Kuriamo22 (parts 37 and 38): "Daria sat in the bridge chair and pinched the bridge of her nose for the thousandth time since ending up on the Defiant. She considered withdrawing her order that the ship's replicators not make any alcoholic drinks or other psychoactive substances except tea and coffee." (Part 38 by Kuriamo22)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: No Country For Unpleasant Old Men, by Meester_Lee (part 2c): "'Are we there yet?' asked Kreacher. 'No, we have several hours to go,' said Iago, looking at his watch. About an hour out of Britain, the cabin attendant announced that they'd have in-flight entertainment."

Have Good Mental Health, Eh?

Why not observe World Mental Health Day at The Retreat, where you can experience past life regressions as Cleopatra and participate in a role-playing session that will rip your family apart. Wait, is this holiday supposed to be for or against good mental health?

Speaking of family and stress, today is also Thanksgiving in Canada, so if you want to get depressed over your screwed-up family problems then just remember to be extra polite and serve poutine, as well.

Did This Fire Lead to Any Love Triangles?

Daria's observing the start of the Great Chicago Fire, which started on this day in 1871. Legend has it that the fire was started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow, but I wouldn't be surprised if paper towels over an open flame had something to do with it...Jake.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 34): "The phone of Casa Lane rang around about midnight. Fortunately, it was a night when people were still awake being creative, rather than sleeping like the boring people who counted as normative members of society."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by EntrancedCat, Roentgen, and Meester_Lee (parts 34 - 36): "Your Humble Narrator would be lying, O My Dear Brothers, if I gavoreeted that I ponied where I lay as I sat up and viddied about for some clue and for my droogs to pop up, guff and smeck at the fast trick on their dear leader." (Part 35 by Roentgen) (Part 36 by Meester_Lee)

  • Decisions, by elainefr (part 8): "Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse...so this is adultery...I'm supposed to feel guilty about this, but I don't."

  • Fairyland its a Hell of a Place, by Kuriamo22 (part 1): "It's a beautiful morning in Wonderland. The sun smiles as he rises in the east bathing this majestic and fantastic land in light. From Mount Flub flub in the east to the gumdrop plains in the west."

  • Reclaiming the Fire, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "Groans and grunts echoed against the hallways. Lockers slammed. Shoes lazily slid against the linoleum floor. Student life sluggishly reentered Lawndale High School."

Is He Having Tea with the Mack Hare?

Kevin's going to ask a famous and clever riddle for Mad Hatter Day, but I think it's likely to be less about ravens and writing desks and more about chickens and crossing roads. Still, if you want a character that spouts a lot of nonsense you could do worse than Kevin Thompson.

Can Trent Think of a Good Rhyme for "Golf"?

Jesse's blissfully enjoying National Golf Day, although I'll bet you anything he forgot the ball. At least he's wearing a shirt, and the new vest is a big change, too. I think Mystik Spiral's about to go through a big reinvention.

Today is also the ninth anniversary of Daria's cameo on an episode of Drawn Together, although the less said about it, the better.

Fanfic Update!
  • Benjamin Morgendoffer, by Veleriphon (part 5): "Perspective. Kevin's stick-figures were lazy, but rapidly scratched onto the page, but their positions relative to the background were ... jarring. To say the least."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 33): "It was rare, but occasionally Daria and Jane elected to hang out at the Morgendorffer residence rather than Casa Lane. These occasions usually happened when the Spiral was arranging a new song in the basement."

  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by Meester_Lee, cfardell_Brenorenz29, and peetz5050 (parts 31 - 33): "Cat heard the foot-falls well before he actually saw who made them. They weren't human; he knew that; humans made a thunk, thunk, thunk pattern as they walked along." (Part 32 by cfardell_Brenorenz29) (Part 33 by peetz5050)

  • Dreams Rewoven, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Dear Mr. Stoneler, After carefully reviewing the remuneration package included with your offer to become editor of Treasure Coast Lighthouse magazine, I determined that it did not meet my needs and expectations. I wish you luck in finding a suitable candidate for this position."

  • Morning Routines, by JPAGC (part 2): "Michelle Landon woke up before the alarm. In the years before, when she had been a CEO, she had trusted alarm clocks to wake her up at the early hours of dawn."

Sandi as a Janitor? Good Grief!

Sandi's trying to fit in for National Custodial Workers Recognition Day, but I doubt most custodians dress that way for work. Besides, I wouldn't dress that way if I were you, Sandi--you never know when Upchuck might be near.

This is also the day the comic strip Peanuts began appearing in newspapers in 1950. We can thank the cartoon for the phrase "It's lame DJs, Charlie Brown!" in the episode "Jake of Hearts." It also inspired Petrel/CINCGREEN's fanfics "New Kids in Town" and "New Kids in Town II: 'Batting Practice'."
