Happy BIRTHDAY, Mr. Walken!

Mr. DeMartino is wishing Christopher Walken a happy birthday, as the actor turns 71 today. Considering DeMartino is supposedly based on Walken, this seems appropriate. Also, anyone who enjoyed Walken's appearance on the music video "Weapon of Choice" may like Peetz5050's fanart by the same name.

Today is also a double episode anniversary, as both "Malled" and "The F Word" aired on this day in 1997 and 2000. Daria succeeded in failing to keep her lunch down at the Mall of the Millennium, although I'm pretty sure that wasn't intentional.

Fanfic Update!
  • Loose Ends (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part III), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'So,' Tom said to break the ice in the rather chilly dining room. 'So.' Elsie agreed, staring back at him over a glass of brandy. '...So Mom and Dad are dead.'"

  • The Only Pair, by SentrytheDefiant (part 7): "'Erin's finally getting a life of her own.' One can only hope she doesn't take after her mother, Helen thought bitterly. 'I can't believe it. Little Erin getting married. She's not rushing into this I hope.'"

  • Out of Place, by PrecambrianStudios (part 5): "'I'm serious! It's not like we're going to go back and it's the apocalypse or anything like that. Worse case scenario, we go back and we've been missing for a while.' 'No. Worse case scenario is we never leave.'"

  • Reclamation, by SacredDust (part 1): "Things had not worked out with Jane. There were a number of reasons, but Tom chalked it up to natural differences."

  • When Gay Marriage Bans Go Horribly Wrong (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Huh, Daria?' Jane asked as she stared at what was going on around her in total shock."

Um...Abra Camaro!

Kevin is about to show us a magic trick in honor of Smoke and Mirrors Day. Let's hope that the trick doesn't involve any actual smoke, because I wouldn't put it past him to set something on fire. Any chance those bunnies are flame-retardant?

Today we also have the anniversary of the episode "The New Kid," which aired on this day in 1998. We should really go all out to celebrate this one. Anyone got any gum?

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 34b): "Abbie's parrot flew into the room and landed on Tierney's head. That wasn't comfortable. It felt almost as if Chiquito were trying to give her some kind of message. Maybe—Get Out Of Here?"

  • 58 & 27, by macross (part 1): "The man didn't lower the paper to learn the visitor's identity but a smile did appear on his lips when he heard the sounds of stiletto heels clacking on the dark solid oak floors."

  • Rape Isn't Really All That Funny (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Jane and Daria stared at the latest abomination to emerge from the PPMB."

  • Switcheroo, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "Jace Lane ignored the chipper voice of his overly enthusiastic self-esteem teacher, Mr. O'Neill, and continued to draw in his worn sketchbook."

  • TGATG: How To Change A Life, by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "'Speaking of dates, I'm thinking of asking Cassidy out,' Tom said. 'Cassidy?' Ashley asked, 'Refresh my memory, which one is she?'"

It's Helen and the Jets!

Helen is wishing performer Elton John a happy birthday today, as he turns 67. She might want to rethink wearing that outfit to the office, though.

Today is also Waffle Day, so have a few for breakfast if you'd like. Just make sure you check the sell-by date if you want to avoid developing a very mild stomachache. Gah!!!

A Little Pile of Adorable!

Today is National Puppy Day, so go cuddle up with an adorable little dog! But not Bark. He's Quinn's favorite.

Speaking of Quinn, today also happens to be the anniversary of the episode "Monster," which aired on this day in 1998. We still don't know which is her best side, but I'm reliably informed they're both good.

Fanfic Update!
  • Chips off the older Block, by Indigo (part 2): "'Hi, this is kind of a surprise I thought that I was the only one around here that ran on this track' was the only thing that came to Jane's mind to say 'If it is a problem we can find somewhere else to run' said the older of the two girls flatly"

  • Daria PM (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "DARIA (V/O): Listen carefully. We don't have a lot of time."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (part 6): "Cassidy made her way over to the buffet table, picking up various bits and pieces. She reached for the last sandwich on a plate at the same time someone else reached for it. She looked over to notice a boy who looked about her own age, with short blonde hair, blue eyes and a suit."

  • Her Friend, by macross (part 3): "'Honey I know leaving Boston was hard, it is for me too, but I really want to thank you for handling it all so well,' said the brunette woman as she drove a red 78' Triumphant Spitfire through the suburban streets on the cool March day."

  • The Past Lane, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "'MR. LANE!' Trent Lane shot up in his desk as the booming voice of his History teacher roused him from his afternoon nap."

  • Ronnie Incorporated, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'It's for economics class. We're supposed to look at some papers from a fake company and write about what they're doing wrong. And I got the biggest assignment of anyone in the class. It's not fair!'"

  • TGATG: How To Change A Life, by ognawk (part 7): "Ashley looked at himself in the mirror on the back of the closet door in his new bedroom. He was dressed in the traditional Fielding uniform of dark blue blazer, white shirt, red tie and beige pants."

Musing about an Episode Anniversary

Daria is sending today's blog post out by mail as a reenactment of the episode "The Story of D," which aired on this day in 2001. Once it arrives, we'll have to consider her submission and decide if it's right for us at this time. Outlook's not good, though.

Fanfic Update!
  • Dylan, by J-D (part 34): "'You do realise', Dylan said, 'that staying at our place means my mother insisting on your eating her food.' He could see Rod on the verge of responding, and cut him off. 'I don't mean just the good stuff, I mean the experiments. You're volunteering yourself as a brand new guinea pig.'"

  • Free Eats (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Jane stared aghast at her best friend, Daria Morgendorffer. It wasn't that they were at school, nor that her friend was standing nonchalantly near her locker."

  • God Save the King also known as The Bitch Is Back (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "Princess Tom and Elsie walked upstairs, Elsie determined to get with a child by hook or crook without actually having to copulate with Butt-head, though her fellow wives actually seemed to be getting on with it quite well."

  • Groped by an Antisocial Climber (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'Who would have thought that one's fashion sense could have a dark side? The normally life-affirming act of choosing an outfit is such a big responsibility that I forgot about everything else! Like, um, the food and stuff. It really was kind of a miracle, huh? Like that lady who got a flat tire in a blizzard and a mysterious guy fixed it for her! She says here it was a guardian angel.'"

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 02: The First Party, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Twenty minutes later, Daria, Jane and Jason met Stacy, Quinn and Corey at a park across from Jason's house on the corner of Glen Oaks Lane and Page Drive. After their mutual surprise had subsided Daria asked, 'Now we'll compare notes.'"

  • The Only Pair, by SentrytheDefiant (parts 5 and 6): "The cold sweat ran down the back of her neck, causing her thin cotton nightshirt to stick to her back. Her heart was threatening to burst out of her chest as it thumped rapidly. She brushed her bangs away from her burning forehead and rested her palm there. Her breath escaped in short, ragged gasps as she tried to calm herself." (Part 6)

  • Out of Fashion, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "'...afraid we're going to have to institute snack spot checks! I'm sorry, young people, but you have abused your privileges!' The PA system clicked off, and Stacy stopped in her tracks. 'But that's not fair!'" (Part 6)

  • Unnamed story (The 1001 Humiliations of Quinn Morgendorffer), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Quinn's head was pounding, and somebody was shining a million billion candle-watt powered flashlight directly into her eyes. No, there were two of them, one for each eye. And a little drum section playing on top of her head. And she felt like there was a dirty wool sock in her mouth."

  • The Window, by metameric1 (parts 4 and 5): "Daria hated to admit it, but she was greatly enjoying herself playing dress up with the talkative woman. The session was far more casual than in the studio; Dauphine had hung yards of white silk in the sunroom of her shared flat to soften the light. She had quite a good eye, and her photos were excellent." (Part 5)

Beware the Ides of March!

Background character "The Head" appears here in a rare alter ego because someone needs to wash away all that blood from Julius Caesar's stabbing. That's right, today is the Ides of March, the day the Ides decided to do something mean because it was that time of the month.

Okay, thank you for that report, Kevin. Mr. O'Neill would like to speak with you after class.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alienation, by malakite (part 12): "At the door she could see the not-woman being glared at by the gigantic bouncer. It was saying something, trying to get in. The thing appeared at the door and shook its head. The bouncer made a 'get lost' motion at the not-woman. Were they in league? The thing offering up victims? Daria stared as she tried to think past her anger."

  • Birthday Blues, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "He lightly scratched his bare chest as he watched the time change from 11:59 PM to 12:00 AM. He was officially twenty-eight years old."

  • Chips Off the Older Block, by Indigo (part 1): "Matt Morgendorffer smiled to himself as he drove away. He knew the girls would look out for each other and hopefully the more social Quinn would help her sister navigate the murky waters of High School a little better this time around."

  • Credence, by Astrocar82 (part 8): "'Jake, where's Daria? How is she?' Helen cried in a panic as she rushed into the sickeningly white waiting room where her husband and younger daughter were already seated by the window, both looking scared."

  • Dominick Morgendorffer, by macross (part 10): "4:34 PM, Jane adjusted the strap of her battered old messenger bag around her shoulder as she walked through the front door of the old Library, the bag had seen better days that was obvious to anyone with eyes."

  • Halloween High, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "The large, fluffy white angel wings only added insult to injury. Daria Morgendorffer stared at the white layered chiffon dress with annoyance."

  • Happy (Iron Chef:The Grim Plot Reaper), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer had rejected many clichés in her life, and the latest was the 'five stages of grief.' She went through no distinct stages, nor did she feel grief. For that, you needed something to grieve about, and there simply wasn't anything."

  • Is It Kevin's On Time Graduation Yet? (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'It still seems freaking impossible.' Daria complained as Kevin got his diploma, which would be added to the pile of athletic awards he had gotten earlier."

  • Leeville Blues (Iron Chef:The Grim Plot Reaper), by Shiva (part 1): "The Morgendorffer's were crammed into Jake's Lexus as it sped it's merry way in the state of Virginia towards hell. Oh sorry, I mean they were going to a family wedding."

  • Missed Opportunities, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "The picture windows on the far right were connected to a sliding glass door that led out to the balcony. Most of the guests were mingling inside but there were a few people standing out there. She was out there."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 02: The First Party, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Speaking of which... Brittany invited me to her party.' 'No kidding? Are you going?' 'Of course, how could I pass up an opportunity to learn more about our peers and so come closer to solving the mysteries that seem to define this suburb?'"

  • A New Kid's Dance Party While a Tree Grows (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "While Jake was panicking about property values, Quinn was having a crisis of her own. Sandi was attempting to sabotage the Dance Committee meeting by making silly suggestions... 'I think we should decorate the gym like the inside of the Concorde.'"

  • Out of Fashion, by Kristen Bealer (parts 3 and 4): "'Wow!' she exclaimed as she reached the next booth. It was full of clothes. Not the kind of stuff Stacy was used to seeing at Junior Five or Cashman's, though. These clothes were brightly colored, with unusual designs and crazy patterns." (Part 4)

  • Quinn's Code 10: Blue Screen of Sherman, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "'You're kidding, right? You think I'm going to talk to you?' Sherman said in reply. He looked at Jane. 'You, maybe. Like, four hours into a kegger.' He looked at Jennifer. 'Similarly.' 'Perhaps after I vomit on your shoes,' Jane said. 'No way!' Jennifer said, forcing herself to be audible."

  • TGATG: How To Change A Life, by ognawk (parts 5 and 6): "Adam was about to respond, when a sign near the checkout caught his eye. Superball Lottery Tonight! Jackpot $100 Million! If You're Not In, You Can't Win!" (Part 6)

  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Since Mommy and Daddy won't pay for beautiful, perky breasts for their sweet little girl. I'll just have to do it my lonesome-self.'"

  • Vote Sloane, by Charles RB (part 1): "'Now I understand your frustration, I really do, I know I've made your job harder,' said Tom, 'but what you have to understand is that it was causing me physical pain to not tell that guy he sucked.'"

  • The Writer, the Girl With Red Lipstick, and the Musician, by lulamae-golightly (parts 1 - 3): "A young woman hugged her arms closer to her body as a wind passed by, blowing her hair into her face. She stared up at the tall building that she knew now as her apartment building." (Part 2) (Part 3)

She's a Barbie Girl

Quinn is looking as artificial as ever in this alter ego, which celebrates the doll Barbie's launch on this day in 1959. Just don't take her out of her original packaging. Not because it would damage her value as a collectible but because this way you can't hear her chattering about fashion and dating.

Also, today marks the anniversary of the first airing of the episode "I Don't" in 1998. Aside from the general WTF of Lawndale High holding a bridal expo, it was a pretty fun episode. Also, it ended in a rare moment of Jake Triumphant. Atta boy, Jakey.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria and Trent Forever, by malakite (part 4): "Daria awoke to the scent of breakfast. Her father was scrambling up some eggs-Jane was obviously still asleep. She noticed a lack of any sign that Mom had been home, but was diverted when he asked her if Jane would be having breakfast too."

  • Genderflipped Confessionals, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "DARIUS: 'I swear that Li thinks that 1984 was an instruction guide.' JOHN: 'Oh relax. This isn't so bad..."

  • Once You See, by lulamae-golightly (COMPLETE!): "Despite Helen's reluctance, Stacy stayed with the Morgendorffers. For a week, there was an odd silence in the house. Quinn's absence hung in the air all day, reminding everyone that she was gone. It hurt." (Part 10)

  • The Only Pair, by SentrytheDefiant (parts 3 and 4): "'No! No, you can't do this!' She screamed. Her father had a firm hold on her upper body so all she could do was kick at the open air with her converse sneakers. She was defenseless." (Part 4)

  • Out of Fashion, by Kristen Bealer (parts 1 and 2): "She glanced at her sister. The only thing that club had done was make Quinn even more shallow and popularity-obsessed than ever, and she had seen firsthand how much it had sabotaged all of Quinn's attempts to actually use her brain. I could push Quinn into fixing this, she realized. But should I?" (Part 2)

  • A Real (Dead) Boy (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Tom slowly made his way back upstairs after another date. The evening seemed to have gone well, but he was tired and looking to get some rest. He opened his bedroom door and went for the light switch, but it wouldn't turn on, no matter how much he tried."

  • Regular Daria, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "It was a beautiful day in High Hills Park, complete with twittering birds and a gentle breeze, and Daria and Jane were hating every second of it. Again."

  • Sisters and Friends, by metameric1 (part 20): "'Very cool, Red,' Jane nodded approvingly as Quinn proudly showed off her new pair of sunglasses. They were cool."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Lawndale Confessional), by macross (COMPLETE!): "The Confessional room door slams open and in walks Mr. DeMartino with a tired expression. He sits down on the stool in front of the camera, pulls out a pack of Marlboros and lights one up. He closes his eyes while taking the first drag then slowly exhales before looking up straight at the camera."

  • Unnamed story (The 1,001 things to push DeMartino off the edge), by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "Anthony DeMartino was a little happier than usual today after Brittany Taylor had informed him that she would be dropping History class for extra cheer leading practice now that the expanded squad was competing in contests instead of just cheering for the Lawndale Lions."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Kay made some small talk with Daria as she entered the mud room of the Sloane Mansion. 'Tom wasn't expecting you today. He's not upstairs.'"

  • What If, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "I never imagined my first kiss. I didn't spend my free time thinking about fictional romantic partners in 'magical' situations. But I did always believe it would be something worth remembering. Unfortunately, it would be for all the wrong reasons."

Which Is My Best Personality? I Know They're Both Good.

Quinn and her alter ego are reminding each other to celebrate Multiple Personality Day today. Oh, if only Quinn did have multiple personalities. Then she wouldn't have to decide which of the three Js to date.

Today is also the anniversary of the first airing of "Fat Like Me" in 2001. In this episode, the Fashion Club finds out why it's a bad idea to tell Sandi to "break a leg." We also get to watch Daria and Jane develop a bit of a gambling problem.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Aches of a Young Artist in Love, by Snow-Kitty (COMPLETE!): "Jane sat staring into the glowing and crackling fireplace, contemplating the somewhat magical evening she had shared with whom she had thought to be the most interesting man she had ever met."

  • Alienation, by malakite (part 11): "Daria felt the echo of crude and direct mental manipulation. Then she saw it. Even in the dim light, the boy seemed too young. Younger than Daria. Maybe younger than Quinn. His aura was a mess of confusion and excitement."

  • Evening, by JPAGC (part 2c): "'So how do you like my stew?' asked Jake a little too brightly, a full glass of wine again in his hand. Another awkward silent moment passed, with all avoiding making eye contact. The stew portions on each respective plate were basically untouched."

  • Friday Night Exchange, by GlitterShrooms (part 2): "She had spotted Jodie at her locker. It had already been two weeks since she and Mack had broken up. While it was certainly not unusually for the two to break up, Quinn couldn't remember the last time that they waited this long before getting back together. Now might be her best chance...Her only chance."

  • Hot Daria, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "She stared him down, freezing him in his spot, before fixing her eyes on the other girl. She was small and thin with very discernible 'assets'. Brittany was sure she had her beat in that department, however, the girl was naturally beautiful."

  • Jane's Absence, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "As they entered the ward and asked for Jane they were stopped by the nurse stationed outside the room who informed them that visiting was restricted to family members only" (Part 4) (Part 5)

  • Left Unsaid, by LuxKen27 (COMPLETE!): "He remembered the first time he'd kissed her: the sweetness of her lips a pleasing contrast to the taste of beer on her tongue; running his hand through her hair and curling his fingers over her neck, feeling her skin flush with heat beneath his touch."

  • Mad Dog's Blessing (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Quinn got knocked up again?' Elsie drawled in her smokers voice as she sculpted her latest sculpture. 'Yup.' Daria drawled in her monotone as she contemplated a couple plotbunnies for a story."

  • Once You See, by lulamae-golightly (part 8): "She continued to stare, a heat slowly forming in her stomach, her chest, her head. It was burning, screaming, worse than ever. An anger. A rage. Burning."

  • The Only Pair, by SentrytheDefiant (part 2): "'I'm sure you've seen him. He's hard to miss. He's incredibly tall, great arms. I normally don't care for long hair and his clothes need work-I mean who wears camouflage pants? But he's definitely an 8. He's in our lunch.' 'Richard?!' Quinn nearly toppled out of bed."

  • Renewment, by RLobinske (part 2): "Helen sat back in her seat with a slight frown, causing Amy to ask, 'What's up?' 'Oh, this talk of children reminds me of how much I miss my girls. Now that I have plenty of time, they have their own lives on opposite sides of the country.'"

  • The Thousand and One Club (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Tom walked into Fielding Academy one morning and felt like something was different. Maybe it was the smell of flowers in the air, maybe it was all the trees on campus starting to grow back their leaves, or maybe it was the murdered corpses of all his fellow students littering the halls."

  • Yes Ma'am (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Daria had been suspicious about this so called 'date' for a while. Robert getting her name wrong and talking to her using cue cards were big warning signs. Yet, as she looked at his chiseled jawline and athletic frame, a very unfamiliar feeling was stirring inside her."

Without His Invention, Eric Would Have to Learn Morse Code

It's practically a national holiday to Helen and Quinn. Today is the anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell's birth in 1847. Bell was of course the inventor of the telephone, without which both of them would probably wither away and die.

Not only that, but today is also a triple anniversary for Daria episodes: "Esteemsters," "The Old and the Beautiful," and "Antisocial Climbers" all aired on this day in 1997, 1999, and 2000. Imagine that episode mashup for a moment. Daria shows up for her first day at the nursing home and everyone climbs a mountain. Hey, come to think of it, that has some interesting fanfic potential.

Fanfic Update!

  • Jane's Absence, by Indigo (parts 1 and 2): "'Thank you Daria that was very informative' said Mrs Bennett wondering if it had been a good idea after all to allow Daria to do the project without a partner. She thought back to the day that she had given the assignment to the class..." (Part 2)
