How About a Dose of "Awwwww"?

Who could resist a pile of cuties like this for National Mutt Day? I know Quinn couldn't, and if anyone knows cute it would be her.

Today is also System Administrator Appreciation Day, and while I'm not 100% clear on what a System Administrator does, I'm willing to bet that Buzzdome employs at least one of them.

They're Grrrrreat!

Whether you spend it appreciating the ceramic tigers at Brittany Taylor's house or forcing your best friend to dye your hair, have a great International Tiger Day! If you must celebrate with hair dye, please try to avoid the farm-themed colors. Nothing good ever comes from those.

Today is also National Lasagna Day, so after your tiger-themed holiday please pull up a chair with the Morgendorffers and have a tasty pasta dinner! Unless Jake's cooking tonight, in which case I recommend you claim you have other plans.

Normally this is where the fanfic update would go, but there hasn't been any new fanfic recently. Get moving, you lazy writers! (Yes, I'm including myself in this.)

Taking Economics to New Heights

Mrs. Bennett is trying out a new skill for Walk on Stilts Day, or maybe she's just trying to figure out a way to get (and keep) her students' attention in class. Those balloons might actually work, at least for Kevin and Brittany!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Pierce Me," which aired on this day in 1998. Not only did Daria/Trent shippers get a ton of new material to work with, but we also found out that Daria is an "innie"! Valuable information, indeed.

Step on the Gas, Daria!

Travis is hoping someone will give him a lift for National Day of the Cowboy, but I have my doubts. I mean, I've never seen him ride and the conventional wisdom says that means I can't call him a cowboy yet.

Today is also Thread the Needle Day, but the holiday doesn't say what you should do after that. I guess you should just thread all the needles until you're out of either thread or needles? DeMartino will probably want some of them to hem his pants, and I'm sure he'll do an excellent job of it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 48): "It had been the only interesting thing of the prep course. To visit a college of your choice."

Hot Diggety Dog!

Pull up a seat for the hot dog eating contest on this fine National Hot Dog Day, but don't expect to win. Mr. DeMartino is there and he looks ready to win.

If you'd like some dessert as well, today is also Vanilla Ice Cream Day! I prefer chocolate myself, but Mack will pass on the whole holiday altogether. That ice cream truck misadventure really ruined the treat for him for all time.

A Junky Sort of Day

Tom chose the wrong way to celebrate National Junk Food Day, because Jane is most likely going to kill him and use his remains as an alternate art project. Enjoy plenty of ZooZoo Drops, Juicy Joes, fries, pizza, and whatever else you can find today!

Today is also the anniversary of "The Misery Chick" in 1997 and "Jake of Hearts" in 1999. Both episodes dabbled a little on the dark side, with Tommy Sherman dying in one and Jake having a brush with death in the other, but I don't remember a lot of junk food in either.

Fanfic Update!
  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 42): "Erin had wondered if she would ever get used to sleeping in a moving bed. Now Athena’s gentle rocking seemed so relaxing, she wondered if she would ever be able to sleep in a steady bed again."

  • Heavenly Wuss (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "'Look, maybe we just jumped into this dating stuff too fast.' said Daria. 'Maybe we need to take a break.'"

  • Journey into Misery, by Captain Marbles (part 4): "It was a dark and stormy night, and in Sloatstown, somewhere in the Midwest, thirteen people - seven women and six men - sat around a round table marked by a pentagram in a darkened room lit only by thirteen black candles."

Wait Until You See His Arabesque!

Happy birthday to Edgar Degas, born on this day in 1834. Mr. DeMartino is clearly hoping to get hired as a model for one of Degas's famous ballerina paintings, but I don't think it's going to work. Not because DeMartino isn't suited--look at that man's natural grace, after all--but because Degas has been dead for over a hundred years. Better go for Plan B, Mr. D!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Groped by an Angel," which aired on this day in 2000. Quinn got in touch with her spiritual side, only to find out it was just as shallow as the rest of her.

Beauty and the Beasts

Jane is looking especially family-friendly as Snow White, because today is the 65th anniversary of Disneyland. The park opened in 1955, and sports figures (probably including Kevin) have aspired to go there ever since. I can't guess what Jane's opinion of Disney might be, because on the one hand it's cutesy and not her style at all, but we also know that she hopes to get a job as an animator there. I guess we always knew Jane's personal scruples were for sale (see "Art Burn" and "Malled").

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 9): "'Gah,' Daria jerked her head back as she stepped onto the Morgendorffer driveway. 'Get that thing out of my face.'"

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 47): "'Here it is. This is the last one!' Daniel exclaimed, placing a heavy box on the ground. 'Home Sweet Home.' Said the girl with him."

No Weiner Jokes, Please!

Kevin's gone waaaaay too far to observe National Hot Dog Day, but I must say it's nice to see him finally wear something that isn't a football player's uniform. Jake will be setting up his hot dog eating contest at any moment, so I'd clear out before Mr. DeMartino gets here. You don't want to see that.

Today is also National Gummi Worm Day, but whatever you do, do not eat any of them. Jane might be saving them for a special art project.

I'll Have an Order of "Things"

Jane and Daria are joining the crowd of people ready to celebrate National French Fries Day, and yes, I think they will have fries with that! They might even splurge on cheese fries, even though that's not the name of the holiday. Still counts.

Today is also Embrace Your Geekness Day and Fool's Paradise Day, which means pretty much everyone is covered. Most of the people I know fall into at least one of those categories!

Finally, the episode "Fair Enough" first aired on this day in 1998. There were plenty of both geeks and fools in that one, but sadly a shortage of fries to go along with the turkey legs.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 46): "Once P.E's time was over, Daniel went on to perform his role as secretary in the weekly student council meeting. It lasted less than the last time and was less animated but Richard was unpleasant as always."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 36): "Tom came up behind Daria as she was looking in the mirror. He put his arm around her waist and gently kissed the back of her neck just above the strings of the polished tiny stone spheres known as 'Martian Pearls' she was wearing."

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 12): "'I don't need anything,' Jesse sang as he twirled Clarissa around. 'Anything!' Clarissa did jazz hands and prepared to be picked up and spun about."

Daria Would Rather Just Be Lonely, Thanks

I see Brittany is all set for Cheer up the Lonely Day: she's got the cheer and her elderly friend has the lonely. I mean, you'd have to be pretty lonely in order to willingly put up with Brittany, right?

Love and Cookies!

Looks like Quinn's coming out as a secret grunge fan, just in time for Courtney Love's birthday. We know Trent is enough of a Nirvana fan to enjoy playing "Come as You Are" in spite of his dread of performing covers, but his opinions on Hole are open for debate.

On a sweeter note (get it?), today is also National Sugar Cookie Day! Daria made some for you, but if you want them you have to endure that creepy grin of hers. No cookie is worth that.

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 8): "As they rounded the corner to Schloss Morgendorffer, Brittany slowed down causing Daria to give unvoiced thanks. Brittany uncharacteristically took a hand off the wheel to point."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 34): "On Friday, Daria awoke to a cold rain shower. It rained most of the day, which Daria thought was appropriate."

  • gay vibes, by 249b_east_35th (COMPLETE!): "'I can see the headline now. Suburban Axe Massacre; Scientists Blame Heatwave and Overbearing Parents.'"

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 11): "'Anythang yew kin do, ah kin do better.' Ariel announced in a thick drawl. Jesse scoffed at the very idea. 'I can do anything better than you!' she sang."

Nuts and Chocolate, Better Together!

I think Mrs. Johannsen's chocolate obsession has finally gone too far, even on Chocolate Day. I mean, all of fandom knows that I have no room to judge, but even I know that it's better to eat the chocolate than to be the chocolate.

Today is also the anniversary of the episodes "Road Worrier" in 1997 and "It Happened One Nut" in 1999. Both were quite nutty, in that Daria sat on a peanut butter sandwich in the former and sold nuts in the latter. Good news for nut fans, but bad news for Quinn and her pistachio dye allergy.

Someone Pick Upchuck's Jaw Off the Floor, Please

Andrea, unlikely as it is, seems to be celebrating National Bikini Day. Even stranger, Andrea was also featured in a bikini in the end credits of Is It College Yet? Someone working on the show must have had a bit of a crush on everyone's favorite goth chick.

Today is also Work-a-holics Day, and I really hope that Helen plans to celebrate only one or the other. I have to assume bikinis are not part of the law firm's dress code.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Mart of Darkness," which aired on this day in 2000. In it, we found out that Andrea worked at Payday, although probably not very hard. And not in a bikini, either.

Fanfic Update!
  • All the News that’s Fit to Primp (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Sure, things did get cold and all gloomy in autumn, but that wasn’t so bad since at least it gave you an excuse for more layers. And it’s not like Quinn had even bought any new dresses since coming to Morrowind so she needed to mix things up."

  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 8): "As they rounded the corner to Schloss Morgendorffer, Brittany slowed down causing Daria to give unvoiced thanks. Brittany uncharacteristically took a hand off the wheel to point."

  • Contriving Hope, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "'FORGET IT, TIMOTHY!' 'But, Anthony, I need counselors for my OK To Cry Corral. None of my students have taken interest in making a difference.'"

  • Enter the Silhouette, by Roentgen (part 3): "'And as you can see, uh..."Silhouette", the cameras completely cover the arc of the mansion. We have three people watching the cameras, three patrolling the grounds. The perimeter is encircled by a fence and one gate.'"

  • A Moment Behind the Mask, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "'And so completes our time of raising the dead and causing mass panic in this listless town,' Daria stated, her deadpan tone infecting every word she spouted."

  • Reclaiming the Fire, by RubinaLadybug (COMPLETE!): "Groans and grunts echoed against the hallways. Lockers slammed. Shoes lazily slid against the linoleum floor. Student life sluggishly reentered Lawndale High School."

  • Unpacking Lawndale YouTube Drama in 2020 with Quinn Morgendorffer (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "[The Video begins: Quinn is seated in a fluffy pink paradise. The Mirror is Sentient! Get Out of the House!

Quinn has it backwards, I see. Today is Compliment Your Mirror Day, and not only is her mirror complimenting her, but the whole situation looks like a nightmarish abomination straight out of a horror movie. At least we know that no one will be complimenting that awful one in the girls bathroom that adds at least two pounds.

Today is also the anniversary of Franz Kafka's birth in 1883. I'm pretty sure The Angst Guy's "I Never Metamorphosis I Didn't Like" is the only Daria/Kafka crossover fanfic in existence, but I'd be happy to be corrected if there's another one that I don't know about.

Anyone Want Some Firstdown Fudge?

Today is Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, a day that seems made specifically for Bro & QB. Anyone else kind of want to see the backstory for that partnership? I feel like alcohol must have been involved somehow. I demand that someone write a fanfic about it, and the ice cream puns had better be glorious.

This is also International Joke Day, so let's spend some time today trying to figure out exactly why the chicken crossed that road.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 33): "Daria and Tabitha went through Potions class much as they would have if Professor Snape had been teaching it."

  • Determination, by solar_baeby (part 1): "'I can’t believe you aren’t going to attend your own graduation ceremony.' Daria looked up from her book to stare, unimpressed, at her best friend."

  • Doctor Who: Ways Clara Oswald Survived the Raven, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "Clara considered what Rump had said. She went to talk to Rigsy. 'You're serious?' he asked. 'You actually expect me to give you my death sentence?'"

  • Enter the Silhouette, by Roentgen (parts 1 and 2): "I thought today would be an ordinary day. It was not." (Part 2)

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 10): "'Why doncha marry me, Trent?' Daria slurred. 'Uh....' His hesitancy got a laugh."

  • It Runs in the Family (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Jake looked uneasily from Helen, to Quinn, to Daria, to Daria's...uh...date."
