Happy BIRTHday!

Mr. DeMartino is wishing a happy--or perhaps a creepy--birthday to Christopher Walken, who was born on this day in 1943. Since DeMartino is supposed to be based on Walken, does that mean it's his birthday, too?

Today is also a double anniversary for the episodes "Malled" in 1997 and "The F Word" in 2000. In both, Daria succeeded at failing to avoid a trip to a mall, but the second time around she was able to convince Mr. O'Neill to take her place.

Calling Ruttheimer the Prestidigitator!

The girls' bathroom currently has both smoke and mirrors for Smoke and Mirrors Day, but I think the holiday is supposed to refer to magic tricks. Then again, they did trick Mr. DeMartino into interrupting a Tommy Sherman seance, which was pretty magical. Does that count?

Today is also National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, so drop by Earl and Barbara's place for some cheese-and-cellophane sandwiches. Or not. I recommend not.

Finally, this is the anniversary of the episode "The New Kid," which aired on this day in 1998. No smoke and mirrors here; Daria actually went on not one, but two dates! Both of which crashed and burned hard, but let's not dwell on that part.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crusader Queens, by Roentgen (part 2): "Helena Morgendorffer remained in her bedroom in the keep. She waited on her husband. God knows where he was or what he was doing."

  • Daria Who? in "The Macra-Economic Terror", by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "JANE: Well that was a complete and utter waste of time. Trying to paint Earth-rise on the moon would be way easier in atmosphere! Why didn't any of you remind me that you can't use acrylics in a zero-vacuum?" (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 21): "Blinded by renewed tears of pain and grief Erin stumbled down the stairs of G-bar. Oblivious of the silence her arrival caused, she threw herself into her usual bar stool, leant her head on the bar and sobbed."

  • Great Professor Dario, by ST91 (COMPLETE!): "Slowly and with all the care he possessed, Dario put his son A.J in the crib. His wife Claire Defoe did the same with their daughter, Heather Helen."

  • IRL, by atiyatortilla (COMPLETE!): "It was 8:55 PM, five minutes until closing, and Kevin Thompson was left feeling dejected. He should've known that nobody would show up."

  • Jim And Kevin's Excellent Misadventure (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Daria, Stacy, Lindy, Sandi and Tiffany are watching TV. Stacy: Thank's for having us over, Quinn. Quinn: No problem, Stacy. I figured since our husbands are having a guys night out we might as well have a girls night in." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Journey into Misery, by Captain Marbles (part 2): "Meanwhile, back at 'La Grande Hotel' (It's a chain), Daria's parents were beginning to worry."

  • No Rain, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "'Oh night....' sang Jesse. 'Diviiiiiiiine!' He wasn't a boy soprano anymore, but he could still handle the note with a little coloratura. 'Oh night, when Christ was born!'"

  • Pragma (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2019), by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "Dust came with the evening wind. It was not as disturbing in Appalachia as at the lowlands, but disturbing enough. Stacy Rowe closed the window, and began to make the bed."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 180): "'So what did you think of Sergeant Nemec?' Sandi said. 'Wouldn't that be Sergeant Major Nemec?' Andrea said, drolly. 'She likes to remind me of her exact rank.'"

  • You Want It Darker, by LSM (part 9): "Life drifted on, as life did. Days blended into each other and Jane passed them creating and discovering. She painted, things she couldn't explain and had no idea where they came from, but everything was blue and yellow gold."

Say It Ain't So, Joe!

Joey seems less than impressed that it's National "Joe" Day, but he should really appreciate it. If it was National "Jamie" Day then no one would even remember it.

Today is also Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day, so any song ideas about dogs and pick-up trucks are welcome. Not you, Trent. I'd probably rather hear from Travis the Singing Cowboy than Mystik Spiral.

H-H-H-Helen and the Jakes!

Helen is rocking out in honor of musician Elton John's 72nd birthday. I don't remember any canon references to the singer, but I could see Helen being a fan. Word to the wise, though: I have a feeling she wouldn't appreciate anyone singing her "The Bitch Is Back."

Today is also Waffle Day, so help yourself to some tasty frozen waffles. Just watch out for that sell-by date; the last thing you want to do is develop a very mild stomachache.

Voting is open for The 2018 Daria Fanworks Awards! Choose your favorite written and visual works on the ballots!

Fanfic Update!
  • Crusader Queens: A Matter of Marriage, by Roentgen (part 1): "'If you have any thing to say to her,' Iacobus said, 'you must do it and quickly.' Daria and Regina rushed into their grandmother's quarters at the castle in Kaiserslautern."

  • Kinderschema, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "What's wrong with me? Trent had wondered to himself for the last six months. No one had answered him, or his equally-important questions of Why aren't I good enough? Why do you want another baby?"

  • Together, by Princess_Pasta (part 6): "'Going out?' Jodie Landon stopped her mad dash to the door as her father's voice stopped her in her tracks."

  • Trent the Therapist, by fightmehoe420 (part 1): "Trent pulls up to the schools' driveway, to see a sobbing Jane sitting on the sidewalk in front of Lawndale High. Trent stared at his lap for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts before he potentially talked to his sister."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 179): "'Hola amiga!' 'Hola yourself!' Daria met Jane in the garage of Legion Tower and they embraced, Jane letting go of her little wheeled suitcase."

  • Veronica in Lawndale, by ST91 (COMPLETE!): "'Vichy! John! We are here!' shouted a beautiful afro-american girl waving an arm. The two teens turned and saw Rachel Landon. All their friends were near her."

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 13): "Rikka awoke early and realized that it a Saturday. She thought about things to do while she quietly padded around Daria's bedroom and began making plans when she hit the shower."

No! More! Extracurricular Activities!

Jodie is here to celebrate Joan Crawford's birthday. She had better not catch any of you using wire hangers, or else she'll--um, hold that thought because she's late for a French club meeting. Next week okay?

In cuddlier news, today is also National Puppy Day so find a puppy to snuggle! But not that one, that's Quinn's favorite.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Monster" in 1998. We never did get to find out which is Quinn's best side, even if they're both good.

"Puppets make anything funny!"

Tiffany's looking a little less artificial than usual for World Puppetry Day, but I think she may want to be careful. If the strings get tangled, she might start to sound like the Rattling Girl of Lawndale.

If puppets aren't your thing, then how about World Poetry Day? Quinn's got a new masterpiece ready and...okay, I'll show myself out.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria The Temptress, by WildDogJJ (part 9): "Daria is in her usual seat next to Paul. She's wearing a tight red t-shirt."

  • No Rain, by Lady Evil (part 39): "'Dr. Becky?' Daria asked during a therapy session. 'Do you think I could have a copy of that story I gave you? I'd like to give one to Jane, now that we're back on speaking terms.'"

  • A Shared Suffering, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Once she was unable to scream any more, Quinn scrambled back across the passenger seat, through the open door and out of the car." Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10)

  • Timmy The Arsonist (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Seven year old Teddy Carbone is walking to the check out desk with several books. At the counter is a woman in her mid thirties with shoulder length hair that, depending on where you draw the line, is either light brown or dark blond with thick glasses." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Together, by atiyatortilla (part 5): "The Zon was more popular than Elsie anticipated. It was a small club, fitting for a place like Lawndale, and she expected to be underwhelmed. Instead, she found herself stepping into chaos."

  • Unnamed story (IC: Hell is Crossed People), by Dark Kuno (COMPLETE!): "Sandi and Tiffany had managed to escape the initial chaos and slaughter as the first few of what people were calling the 'crossed' began slaughtering their way through Lawndale."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Fictional Reaction), by Kuriamo22 (COMPLETE!): "'Dr. Henderson?', Daria called out as she calmly walked down an empty hallway of the research facility she had found herself in this morning."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 178): "After their meeting with the Yakuza, there were only three days left in the Asia tour. On March 12th, there were the last of the personal meetings with charity workers, celebrities, scientists, educators, and of course, Japanese college students."

  • Veronica in Lawndale, by ST91 (parts 1 and 2): "Veronica Morgendorffer looked at herself in the mirror and the image of an 18-year-old girl returned her gaze." (Part 2)

Anything to Impress Quinn!

I admire Joey's enthusiasm, but I think the eggs were just a little over the top for Poultry Day. I'm sure it would have been plenty to just have a chicken sandwich for lunch, dude.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "The Story of D" in 2001. There wasn't any poultry in it, unless you count Daria being too chicken to submit her story at first.

Erin goooo Braaaaaaagh

Tiffany's favoring us with a lively jig for Saint Patrick's Day, and I think that's the first time anyone's used the word "lively" to refer to anything Tiffany's done. I suspect the influence of green beer, courtesy of Daria's least-favorite leprechaun. It could have been worse; she could have been hit by the love taser.

Today is also a triple Daria anniversary: "College Bored" in 1997, "Daria Dance Party" in 1999, and "Murder, She Snored" in 2000. Drinking, dancing, and death. Sounds like a typical Saint Patrick's Day to me!

Fanfic Update!
  • Digest Readers, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Hunger. The one thing that all life experiences, the ravenous aching emptiness that must be filled."

  • Love Drunk (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Stacy are at the kitchen table talking. Quinn asked 'Why'd you want me to come over, Stacy? On the phone it sounded urgent.'" (Part 3)

  • The New, Beat Up, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "'Ah, better.' Daria sighed as she took off the virtual reality helmet and the video game induced nausea eased in her queasy tummy."

  • A Shared Suffering, by YouthofOz (prelude - part 3): "'Just the place?' spat Nigel in disgust. 'You call this the place? That collection of old tissues and half-chewed tic-tacs in your skull you laughably refer to as a "brain" have really done it this time, Andrew!'" (Part 1) (Part 2a) (Part 2b) (Part 3)

  • Three Devils, by atiyatortilla (part 4): "A red Corvette cruised down a dark stretch of highway, one of only a handful of cars on the road this late at night."

  • Together, by atiyatortilla (part 4): "Dr. Moskowitz's office was a therapist's wet dream."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria's Talking Dog), by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "BRIAN: I don't want to blow my own trumpet, but I am a writer."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Pizza Addict), by TheBrodsterBoy (COMPLETE!): "DR MILLIPIEDS: Well girls, I think your finally cured. It's been 2 months since your last pizza, Jane, you stopped painting in Pizza Sauce, Daria, you stopped making out with a piece of pizza. I think you two might finally be-"

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 177): "The Legionnaires were down to a five-member detail. Half of the team had been sent back to America. Fran was sent back for obvious reasons, and Daria was sent back to recover from the flu. Jamie had almost recovered but was sent back anyway."

  • You Want It Darker, by LSM (part 8): "The first thing she became aware of, that pulled her dreamily from her slumbers, was the smell. Crisp, clean and light with an undercurrent that was uniquely a person's own."

Toga Party!

It's the Ides of March and Daria's dressed for the occasion! I'm not sure if she's planning to be a stabber, a stabbee, or just sit back and watch the fun, but for now I'll just leave you all with Kevin's wise words on the subject:
Mr. O'Neill: All right, why did the soothsayer tell Caesar to "Beware of the Ides of March?" Who wants to "take a stab"? Kevin?

Kevin: Um, because the Ides were gonna do something mean to him?

Mr. O'Neill: The Ides aren't people; they're a time of the month.

Kevin: Eww, gross! Well, there's your answer.
Fortunately, that thought fits right in with today's other holiday, Everything You Think is Wrong Day. This day is truer for some (cough, Kevin) than others, but I'd try not to make any major decisions today just in case.

At Least Her Ears Will Look Cute When the Mob Attacks

Quinn and the Three Js seem pretty happy about Earmuffs Day, but I think the rest of the slowly-starving students feel differently about the subject. Interesting, though, how all of the blame fell on Quinn in spite of Jeffy, Joey, and Jamie being the direct cause of the problem. Wait, did I just defend Quinn? Don't tell Daria.

Fanfic Update!
  • Badside Manner (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Daria is seated in a chair receiving radioactive drugs through an IV drip. She's fully recovered from her surgery and is undergoing chemotherapy. Quinn is sitting next to her. 'How are you feeling, sis?'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Is It Cheating Yet?, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Tom had been at the local indie cinema catching the Haneke matinee when everyone called, so it was three hours before the first message got through: Daria, calling literally the minute after he turned his phone back on. 'Are you alright?'"

  • Life Is A Four-Letter Word, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Once Sandi was 'conscious' (for want of a better word) Chris went to work bandaging her hand." (Part 16) (Part 17) (Part 18)

  • Love Drunk (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Sandi and her girlfriend, Lisa, are on a dinner date at a fancy restaurant. Sandi is especially invested in this relationship since this is the first time in a long time that her life has been going right."

  • No Rain, by Lady Evil (part 38): "'So, Red is back to irritating me,' Trent said on his show."

  • Quin, the talking Dog (formerly Talking dog?), by OzFerret (part 2): "The girl and the collie sat in silence, lost in their own thoughts. Eventually the collie spoke, 'Do we tell him?'"

  • Three Devils, by atiyatortilla (part 3): "Jane's two-bedroom apartment was located a few blocks away from Pizza King, right above Axl's Piercing Parlor. Axl was good friends with Trent and so he'd worked out a deal with her; she got the place for dirt cheap."

  • Together, by atiyatortilla (part 3): "Cranberry Commons was Elsie's least favorite shopping center to visit but it was the one place where she was free from pressure."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 176): "Chapter One was suited up and in an unhappy mood. Daria and Jamie appeared to have picked up a case of the flu, and even though they were both in uniform, each was temporarily confined to quarters and required to wear surgical masks (de rigueur in Nipponese society for anyone who was remotely ill and moving around others.)"

  • You Want It Darker, by LSM (part 7): "'So, long story short is I see her on Tuesday. Apparently she's good but I'll see. I've been let down before. Maybe I was the let down.'"

The QB of Apple Planting

Kevin's wishing us all a happy Johnny Appleseed Day, although I'd bet serious money that he doesn't even know who Johnny Appleseed is. Still, eat an apple to celebrate, or if you don't like apples then just chuck one really hard at Kevin. It's surprisingly therapeutic, or so Mr. DeMartino tells me.

One of the More Fitting Alter Egos

Quinn's doing an excellent job of portraying Barbie for the doll's 60th birthday. I must say, Barbie looks pretty good for 60. Then again, I hear she's mostly plastic at this point. (rimshot)

Speaking of looking nice but acting as basically a prop--just like a bridesmaid--today is also the anniversary of the episode "I Don't" in 1998. While no one in fandom was particularly invested in Cousin Erin's wedding, the episode is notable in featuring the first appearance of fan favorite Aunt Amy. Whatever you do, don't change the radio station in her car!

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (part 58): "Stacy came by to visit Quinn that weekend. Daria noticed that Stacy was pedaling a different bike."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 21): "Daria sat looking out the window of the rover. Her mind wandered momentarily back to when she was a child."

  • Daria The Temptress, by WildDogJJ (part 8): "Quinn is seated on the couch nursing a cup of tea and trying to wrap her head around things. Saturday was Daria's birthday so Quinn was in Boston for a surprise visit."

  • Day of the Daria (Iron Chef: Daria the Correct), by TheBrodsterBoy (part 1): "It was a fine morning in the Pennsylvanian suburb of Lawndale. Not a single sign of spacial destruction could be seen. A young woman named Daria Morgendorffer, was waking up."

  • Judith and Holofernes, by RĂ©mi (COMPLETE!): "Morgendorffer household. The family is watching the news. TV : The peaceful suburb of Lawndale is in a state of shock after the barbaric murder of an up-and-coming young man. The body of Tom Sloane, heir to the prestigious Sloane family, has been discovered, stabbed to death in still unclear circumstances..."

  • Life Is A Four-Letter Word, by YouthofOz (parts 8 - 14): "Got up. Got out of bed. Dragged a comb across my head. Made my way downstairs and had a stroke and somebody spoke and I fell into a dream. Or something like that." (Part 9) (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12) (Part 13) (Part 14)

  • Together, by atiyatortilla (part 2): "Daria woke to her dimly lit bedroom, sweating, bedsheets twisted around her slender body like a boa constrictor. She lied there for a moment, blinking away the thin veil of sleep that still blanketed her eyes."

  • Unnamed story (IC: Hell is Crossed People), by OzFerret (COMPLETE!): "The Mimic must master a number of abilities. They must be keen observers. They must have the ability to change, and they must be willing to subsume their true selves. The ultimate goal of the mimic is survival."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 174 and 175): "On board the Gridrunner, Jane Lane watched Sandi Griffin give her speech. Making sure Sandi wasn't anywhere nearby, Jane whispered to Daria, 'So how far did you have your hand stuck up Sandi's ass?'" (Part 175)

"Isn't one of you enough?"

Quinn's taking Multiple Personality Day a little too far, but maybe she's just letting out the Eunice inside. No doubt Daria would be horrified by extra Quinn personalities, unless one of them was actually worth putting up with. It could happen, right?

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Fat Like Me," which aired on this day in 2001. One of Quinn's more compassionate personalities showed kindness to Sandi by helping her lose weight, although a little manipulation from Daria may have had something to do with it.

Speaking of the (other) f-word, today is also Mardi Gras, AKA "Fat Tuesday." Daria will likely pass on the parade, and the parties, and the...well, everything, I suppose.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 2): "Timing was everything in football especially for a QB, because it could make or break the game."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 56 and 57): "So this is Texas, she said to herself with a wry grin. It doesn't look a bit like the Wild West or those glamorous high-rise office towers she'd seen on that No-Maj television program." (Part 57)

  • Don't Shoot The Messenger, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Dara took a controlled breath, a final glance at the handwritten notes held in her hands, and began."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 20): "Erin woke refreshed. For the first time in a week she has gone to bed early and woken without an alarm. A dinner of pain-killers and ice cream may have helped. She lay in bed, thinking."

  • Fates Entwined, by Deep Metal (part 27): "Hardly believing her eyes, Daria walked over to the scene at the porn factory where Beavis, Butt-head, Upchuck, and DeMartino all gathered."

  • Freefall, by atiyatortilla (COMPLETE!): "The first thing Tori noticed was the coolness of the tile floor against her cheek. The second was the splitting headache." (Part 10) (Part 11)

  • An Honest Musician, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Although I love her and she makes me so proud, I just can't keep up the pretense That us being together can ever go well - frankly it just don't make sense"

  • Judith and Holofernes, by RĂ©mi (parts 1 and 2): "Morgendorffer house. Quinn's room. Quinn is laying on her bed, her head resting in Daria's lap. The younger girl is holding Moby-Dick in front of her eyes, reading aloud while Daria gently runs her fingers through her hair." (Part 2)

  • The Kindness of Strangers, by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "The brutal shove wasn't actually that painful. The impact was cushioned by the grass."

  • K9 and Cynicism: A Girl's Best Alibi (Iron Chef: Daria's Talking Dog), by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Daria watched patiently as the rioting mob swept out of the coffee house, shuffled her papers and stepped down from the stage. Everyone was out now, either to trying to take down the nearest Russian embassy or stop them from taking down the nearest embassy."

  • Life Is A Four-Letter Word, by YouthofOz (parts 3 - 7): "Both Daria and Jane had, for various reasons too numerous to describe here, mastered the art of inscrutable blank expressions when they observed the inane insanity of the world around them." (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7)

Anniversaries are Grrrrrreat!

Jodie, Mack, and Brittany are pretty nonchalant about their impending mauling, but perhaps they've just resigned themselves to the fact that it's World Wildlife Day and that's just the kind of thing you'll have to expect. Jane may want to celebrate by dying her hair again...or maybe she'd rather just get mauled by the tiger instead.

Today is also a triple anniversary for the episodes "Esteemsters" in 1997, "The Old and the Beautiful" in 1999, and "Antisocial Climbers" in 2000. That means this is also the 22nd anniversary of Daria itself! Happy anniversary, Daria! Go steal some of Quinn's candy to celebrate.

Have Peanuts Hijacked YOUR Brain?

I think we can count Daria and Jane out on Peanut Butter Lovers' Day, and that goes double for Daria after the nut stand fiasco. And Jake's Thai peanut sauce. Honestly, did she ever have a good experience with peanuts?

Speaking of sales, today is also both Employee Appreciation Day and National Salesperson Day. If you see Theresa, tell her thanks...and apologize on behalf of the Fashion Club.

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (part 55): "The ride to school and day care was a somber one for the Morgendorffers. Stacy stayed behind with her parents, her absence creating missing space in the back seat."

  • Daria's Makeover, by Meester_Lee (part 7): "It took them a little while to find the sorts of blouses that Daria wanted. Unlike her sister, Daria's visits to Cashman's had been so infrequent that she had yet to map out where everything was."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 19): "The alarm beeped insistently until an arm untangled itself from the bed sheets and smacked the clock into silence. A muffled curse emanated from the bed, followed by a tangle of red hair."

  • Freefall, by atiyatortilla (parts 7 and 8): "Jamie always hated hospitals. It wasn't the cold sterility that bothered him but the lingering presence of death. They tried to mask it well with flowers and bright lights but none of that could hide the fact that many of the patients would never make it home." (Part 8)

  • Home, by RĂ©mi (COMPLETE!): "Tom's car. Tom is driving, a smug smile on his face. Quinn is riding shotgun and trying to put up a brave front, although her hands are nervously clutching the hem of her dress." (Part 6) (Part 7)
