When It Rains Cats and Dogs, It Pores!

Puddie-Pie, Fifi, Snuggles, and Bark are too sleepy to wish you a happy National Puppy Day, so I'll do it on their behalf. Quietly, of course, because who would want to wake up those adorable little guys?

If you're more of a cat person than a dog person, then I have good news: it's also Cuddly Kitten Day! If you don't have a kitten of your own to cuddle, you could always put out a squirrel trap and see if Mr. Whiskers is in a cuddling mood. I doubt it, though.

Both puppies and kittens are awfully cute, but Quinn's pores are even cuter, as she pointed out in the episode "Monster," which aired on this day in 1998. Of course, you can't see them, so you'll have to take her word for it.

Watch Out for Puppy Kickers!

Shhh! The puppies are napping and you don't want to disturb them, especially on National Puppy Day. They're so cute when they're sleeping! And any other time, too. They're puppies, after all.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Monster," which aired on this day in 1998. Always remember that Quinn's pores are:

1. cute
2. tiny
3. invisible

The life you save may be your own!

Flat AND Ridgy!

Brittany's providing the chips and Kevin is the dip for National Chip and Dip Day! Enjoy the snacks today, but remember Earl and Barbara's advice about not fighting the dip. Seriously, that dip means business. Resistance is useless.

Today is also National Puppy Day, so Quinn might go visit her favorite dog Bark. Unless he's been (gasp!) adopted, that is. Or became the victim of a serial puppy kicker.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Monster" in 1998, in which Daria and Jane try to make a film of substance but make the mistake of choosing Quinn as their subject. And we never did find out which was Quinn's best side, either.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (parts 34A and 34B): "Daniel immediately noticed something strange when he woke up that morning. Or rather he sniffed something strange." (Part 34B)

  • Daria of the Milieu: Chasing Wormtrails, by Meester_Lee (part 2): "The coin sank with a splash. 'Did you make a wish?' asked Daria. 'Yes,' said Candida."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 29): "Daria had no classes on Saturday and on this particular Saturday she had no plans, save to go to the library or work on a couple of essays she’d been assigned as homework."

  • Love Times Two (Iron Chef: Send a Character "Foward" in Time), by neonhomer (COMPLETE!): "Quinn walked down and across the hall to her bedroom, closing the door behind as she walked in. Though the sun was shining brightly outside, the pink curtains filtered the light coming in, leaving a gloomy look to the room."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Sitting down on her desk, inside her room, Daria Morgendorffer increased the volume of her headphones and concentrated on the sight right before her: the plump figure of Mrs. Bennett practically filled the screen of her laptop as she spoke to the improvised camera in front of her."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "'But Ms. Li!' Mrs. Manson exclaimed. 'How can you justify the expense of purchasing a NetExtender software licence for every student in the school? It's consumed the balance for the rest of the school year!'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Quinn had finally finished her stupid math class. She had always hated math, flying animated triangles didn't make it any easier."

No! More! Extracurricular Activities!

Jodie is here to celebrate Joan Crawford's birthday. She had better not catch any of you using wire hangers, or else she'll--um, hold that thought because she's late for a French club meeting. Next week okay?

In cuddlier news, today is also National Puppy Day so find a puppy to snuggle! But not that one, that's Quinn's favorite.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Monster" in 1998. We never did get to find out which is Quinn's best side, even if they're both good.

My Puppies are Cute! My Puppies are Tiny!

It's National Puppy Day, Quinn's favorite holiday unless her time working at the pet store soured her on cute animals for good. Really, though, who could resist an adorable pile of puppies? I'll tell you who: mass serial puppy killers.

This is also National Chip and Dip Day, so enjoy a tasty treat today! Just make sure the chips don't fight the dip. Whatever the hell that means.

Last but not least, today is the anniversary of the episode "Monster," which aired on this day in 1998. It's hard to say if Daria made the right choice in softening the video of Quinn before submitting it, but one thing's for sure: "I do not have pores! My pores are cute! My pores are tiny! You're fired!" is one of the all-time greatest Daria lines ever.

A Little Pile of Adorable!

Today is National Puppy Day, so go cuddle up with an adorable little dog! But not Bark. He's Quinn's favorite.

Speaking of Quinn, today also happens to be the anniversary of the episode "Monster," which aired on this day in 1998. We still don't know which is her best side, but I'm reliably informed they're both good.

Fanfic Update!
  • Chips off the older Block, by Indigo (part 2): "'Hi, this is kind of a surprise I thought that I was the only one around here that ran on this track' was the only thing that came to Jane's mind to say 'If it is a problem we can find somewhere else to run' said the older of the two girls flatly"

  • Daria PM (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "DARIA (V/O): Listen carefully. We don't have a lot of time."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (part 6): "Cassidy made her way over to the buffet table, picking up various bits and pieces. She reached for the last sandwich on a plate at the same time someone else reached for it. She looked over to notice a boy who looked about her own age, with short blonde hair, blue eyes and a suit."

  • Her Friend, by macross (part 3): "'Honey I know leaving Boston was hard, it is for me too, but I really want to thank you for handling it all so well,' said the brunette woman as she drove a red 78' Triumphant Spitfire through the suburban streets on the cool March day."

  • The Past Lane, by SentrytheDefiant (COMPLETE!): "'MR. LANE!' Trent Lane shot up in his desk as the booming voice of his History teacher roused him from his afternoon nap."

  • Ronnie Incorporated, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "'It's for economics class. We're supposed to look at some papers from a fake company and write about what they're doing wrong. And I got the biggest assignment of anyone in the class. It's not fair!'"

  • TGATG: How To Change A Life, by ognawk (part 7): "Ashley looked at himself in the mirror on the back of the closet door in his new bedroom. He was dressed in the traditional Fielding uniform of dark blue blazer, white shirt, red tie and beige pants."

Missed It By That Much!

Today is Near Miss Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the day in 1989 when an asteroid came very close to hitting the Earth. Fortunately, we were spared...perhaps by SuperJane! Or maybe not.

Also, it was fifteen years ago today that the episode "Monster" first aired. Which is my best side? I know they're both good.

Jodie Dearest!

Happy birthday to the late Joan Crawford, born on this day in 1908. Jodie's alter ego portrays Crawford's depiction in Mommie Dearest, but I would think she'd be too concerned about getting to her student council meeting on time to worry about wire hangers.

Today is also the anniversary of the first airing of "Monster" in 1998, in which we finally get an answer to the burning question of which is Quinn's best side. As we know, they're both good.

Fanfic Update!
  • After the Disaster 2 :: The Invitation, by Fhujeth_x (part 2): "Watching Sandi think this through, Tiffany quickly reflected the situation in her mind. This Quinn girl seemed like a nice person, for the most part. She didn't seem like the rude, snotty type [like Sandi] but she did seem to take center stage without effort, and undeserved power was so weird. Then again, she and Stacy seemed to get along a little bit... 'Hmm..' She said aloud, trying to figure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. 'Quinn...'"

  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 1: Esteem Rising, by RX-87 (parts 5 and 6): "LI: Patience, Colonel. We're just putting the finishing touches on the Wildhorse and its Eight-Tracker system now. The only problem is finding 'Eighths' with enough power to use it to its full potential. Not to worry, though. We've got some new students coming in today. We're especially optimistic about two of them. Does the name Morgendorffer ring any bells?" (Part 6)

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 8), by oni (part 2): "The elevator came to a stop once they arrived on the fourth floor. It’s metal doors opened and as soon as the three women got off, they saw Linda storm out of room 403, which is not far from where they were at the elevator. Linda doesn’t say anything to them as she passed them and got into the still open elevator. With the elevator doors closing, the three women look at each other and wonder what just happened. 'And there goes mother of the year,' Jane mumbled to herself as she followed Quinn and Judy into room 403."

  • Be Careful What You Wish For, by Doggieboy (part 7): "The redhead had started to say something, but simply closed her mouth and stared at her boyfriend for several seconds. Then she said, 'You’re weird, you know that?' 'I do my best,' he said, and made a half-bow in thanks. 'Think we ought to just "call him up" and stop putting it off?'"

  • Clique Swap, by psychotol (part 22): "Scene:Visitor's locker room. Some players are watching their hand move back and forth, one seems to be following an imaginary butterfly, one seems to be reaching off in random directions, one is stood on top of the lockers trying to breathe as close to the ceiling as possible." (Part 23)

  • Disconnect the Dots, by InvisibleDan (parts 3 - 5): "As I stood there, taking a swig and listening to the silence of my empty little house, I wondered how the second half of my class would go. I wondered if I would still remember the names of all those kids. I drained the glass and put it down on the counter next to the sink, next to a few other dirty glasses that I really had to wash. Then, with a sigh, I went out the front door and headed back to campus." (Part 4) (Part 5)

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 2d): "The security guard took off her cap. 'I'm afraid that name's ticked off. Brittany Booth-Dawe's already gone in to the party.' 'But don't you see! That's her boyfriend! He's brought some other girl in here and used her name! Whoever he took in, her name wasn't Brittany Booth-Dawe!' The security guard drummed her fingers on her clipboard. 'Okay', she said, 'I'm going up to this party with you and we're going to sort this out, see what's really going on.'"

  • The Island of Canceled Cartoons (REPOSTED), by Erin M. (part 1): "As the two girls watched, whole sections of Lawndale began to disappear. First the buildings on the edges of town vanished, moving inward and closer to the new beach. Within thirty seconds, the last of the buildings had disappeared. Ten seconds later, Daria and Jane comprehended what they had just witnessed. Lawndale was gone. "

  • Memory Lane, by echopapa (part 4): "'This...world. I mean, you've got holographic whozits and talking computers and I'm sure that you've got death rays and flying cars-' 'We do.' 'That's what I mean. What kind of a world is this?'"

  • One More Round, by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "I looked over to the guy next to me. He wasn't really big or cute; and yet as his glasses fogged up in the cold winter air I found myself blushing. I'd never really blushed like that before. I never had to do this with any girl I dated. Did I just think of dating?"

  • Runaway Daria: Fallout Lawndale Edition (IC Runaway Daria), by Vukodlak (part 3): "Quinn, Jane and Tom all looked at one another sheepishly. 'Well actually,' Tom muttered rubbing the back of his head. 'Joey kinda grabbed Daria's chest.' Jane added shifting her feet and gesturing to the girl in question. 'Then she kicked their Asses.' Quinn cheered shadow boxing the air"

  • Sandi :: Well... This Sucks :: Chapter 12, by Fhujeth_x (COMPLETE!): "'What happened?' She wanted to know if her teacher would be giving a ride home, or would she really have to walk home dressed like... this. 'Remember?' He laughed, 'Goalpost in Tommy Sherman's honour. That's what.' Grinning he thought she was talking about him, 'Took his life but didn't take his--' 'I mean with Ms. Barch!!' She shouted, standing up, 'Like I care about some washed up jock who died my Freshman year.'" (Part 4)

  • Sandi :: Well... This Sucks :: Chapter 13, by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "After finally making it home, Sandi Griffin opened the door and immediately started to head for the bathroom. She had to wash up - she didn't even want her mom to see her. Hell, she didn't even want her brothers or father to see her, and her brothers rolled around in dirt at least once a week. Exasperated, she looked up the stairs, it seemed quiet enough in the house - no one would catch her entering and then when she was clean she'd go and--"

  • Smijey and Sandi do Text Messages, by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "Smijey: In West Bloomfield, born and raised being fashionable is how I spent most of my days."

  • To Annoy a Mockingbird. Chapter 05, by BF110C4 (part 3): "'Very good, Daria. The mall is a very beautiful illustration of all these economic principles. In fact, it would make for an excellent field trip.' 'All right! Field trip!' Kevin is someone simple, so simple things like doing something new provoke enthusiasm on him, at least until he finds himself bored again. He leans over to Daria to ask her something that may or may not be important. 'Where are we going, man?' 'The field.' Daria was already starting her now standard procedure of transcribing the delusions of the teachers whenever they are about to abuse her words, like right now."

  • Unnamed story (Definitive List of Cliched Dialogue), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Daria slammed her locker closed, turned, and almost ran into someone who was hovering annoyingly close; brown hair, denim jacket, yellow t-shirt, tight jeans, and a smoothly handsome face lifted right out of a teen drama. Her eyes narrowed as she recognized him - one of the boys that was always hanging around her sister. She took a half-step back and then started to walk around him."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Getting Ready for the End of the World), by LongSnakeMoan (COMPLETE!): "Something inside of him that had been building between them finally snapped. It was now or never. 'Cut the crap, JANET. You and I have known each other LONG enough to carry or with this CHARADE anymore.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: I Met Myself on the Way to the Town Square ...), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Stacy blinked, her mouth working against the hand as she tried to plead for her life. Some girl, who looked exactly like her, was holding her down and glaring hatefully at her. This was a Stacy that didn't look nervous at all . . . probably didn't even know what nervous felt like. Stacy stopped trying to talk, now only emitting a high pitched whine. omgomgomg pod people are real omgomgomg"

  • Weapons Check (Iron Chef: Getting Ready for the End of the World), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Hey.' 'Hey.' 'Got them?' 'Oh, yeah. The guy didn't even blink when I put the boxes on the counter - figured that with the trip to State, we'd be 'celebrating' or 'consoling someone'.'"

Near Miss Day? What's That?

"Monster" aired 12 years ago in season two of Daria. Daria got a little soft-hearted, didn't she? She was still a winner in the long run, but one does wonder what would have happened if the original version of the video had come out. A permanent rift between sisters? Punishment for Daria from Mater Helen? The video making it to the Sundance Festival and winning a Jury Prize? What might have been, indeed!

Today is also Near Miss Day. Say what? you ask. Near Miss Day is pretty straightforward, unlike a lot of weird holidays. It's a reminder, not so much a celebration, of the fact that we barely missed getting knocked back into the Stone Age when a small asteroid sailed past us in 1989. It came as close as twice the distance of the Moon from us. Now, lest that sound comfortably far, asteroids have come a lot closer. In fact, one whizzed by only a year ago at only one-sixth the distance from here to the Moon. How long is our magic rabbit's foot gonna hold up? We'll find out one day. (LATE NOTE: This has to do with Daria because of all the jokes about writing a Daria story when Earth gets hit by an asteroid. No one seems to have ever written such a story, but everyone thinks about it anyway.)

Oddly enough, this was also the day nine years ago when the legendary space station Mir reentered the atmosphere. Alas and alack-a-day. It was a grand place for so long.

Horrors! Minx has outdone herself again with a crossover between two leches we know and kind of love. Meet Quagheimer ("Giggiddy Giggidy!") Also check out her Class of 2001! Yowza!

Daria World on Facebook is just short of 300,000 fans!

PPMB
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Scarlett’s Tale, by Doggieboy (Part 18): At first, she was shocked still. Scarlett was in a thatched hut—one where it was unbelievably warm, like a still summer day where the heat had nowhere to go and sweat simply oozed from one’s pores. “You are not Richie.” She turned and saw a man with curly blonde hair, lean and shirtless, but still clad in olive green pants and black combat boots. A pair of dog tags hung loosely around his neck and reflected the sparse candle light. “What?” she asked, her voice confused. “Who’s Richie?”
  • NEW! collar, by Jim North (continued): "Seriously, you guys, you don't have to do this," Quinn said, her words accentuated by a tremor of suppressed giggles. "I'm fine, seriously!" "Do you think she is being serious right now, Stacy?" Sandi asked with a smirk.
  • Cynic and Violence, by Peapotmaster (Part 1): SCOOTER: What are we going to do, boss? / KERMIT: Time for guest star B. / SCOOTER: Who could that be? / (We now see Daria Morgendorffer and Jane Lane enter.)
  • NEW! Falling into College 72: Valley of Love and Delight, by RLobinske (Part 16): "You look good." "And that dress makes you look radiant." "I told Isabelle that radioisotopes were over the top."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 38: Fractures, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 3): “You what!” Rita shouted into the phone. “Erin, you signed a pre-nup? Without telling me? When you’re the one with money, you never sign one of those. It’s a death warrant!”
  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 18): "Sara, this is my friend, Quinn Morgendorffer. We need you to cast a spell for us." "Wait a second. A spell?" Quinn asked. "You mean were going to use magic? Like those gyps with the 1-800 numbers?" Sara looked perturbed. "Oh, you unbelievers. You know not what forces you mock. I'm almost tempted not to help you. Not only am I a true-born Wiccan, but I'm also a Hufflepuff."
  • John Lane 45: Haunted by the Past, by RLobinske (Part 3): "Trust me," said Quinn. "When it comes to writing stuff, Daria's ego is as big as… well, it's big. Really big."
  • Lawndale's Finest—Action Stories 4: Power Struggle, by Jim North (Part 1): "With all the work that Supergirl has done around Lawndale and Gotham City, she shouldn't have to put up with people trying to tear her down like that." Jodie scowled deeply. "Willis doesn't even live here, anyway. She's from Metropolis. What does she know about what Supergirl is really like anyway? Nothing, that's what," she answered her own question. "That's why the Daily Planet or any other respectable paper won't touch her. That's why you can only find her mean-spirited editorials running in second-rate magazines and trashy tabloids." "Gosh, Jodie," Jane said as she turned a page, "I'm starting to get the feeling you don't like our good pal Val." [NEW! Part 2 here: Lawndale's Finest: Action Stories #4 - Power Struggle, by Jim North (continued): "Supergirl!" Val greeted her brightly as she approached, looking and sounding as if she were meeting an old friend for the first time in years. "What a pleasure to finally meet you! Now, you probably didn't know I was coming since I wanted it to be a super surprise, but I'm Val! As in Val Takes On...!"]
  • Shining Star: Temporal Conundrum, by RLobinske (Part 3): Standing on a hill overlooking a town, Archangel said, "No giant strawberry, but otherwise it pretty much looks the same as any other universe. Gotta love nexus stability." Also looking at the town, Richard said, "Except that all the signs are in what we call Old English." "Details, details."

A History of Violence, Part 1

It has been mentioned before that LHS head cheerleader Brittany Taylor has serious anger-management issues, but it is helpful to have visual evidence of this rather disturbing trait. As it happens, there's quite a lot of said evidence. Seriously, what is up with this chick? Everyone remembers her performance in "The Daria Hunter," but do you remember these special moments? (By the way, a special "thank you" goes out to the magnificent UU and Pinhead for some of these superb shots, which had to be shrunk down to fit on the page. The images that don't look as nice are my own. So sue me.)

Brittany can do major damage without half trying (mainly to Kevin, but any male who insults her is fair game). She elbows and foot-stomps Kevin in "Malled," smacks the hell out of the much bigger Tommy Sherman in "The Misery Chick," and (may as well show it) goes Buffy-ballistic in "The Daria Hunter." Plus, she knows squad-level military tactics. By heart. And she's supposed to be a moron. How can she do this? What happened to turn her into the teen-girl version of Nick Fury? She doesn't appear to be afraid of anything or anyone, to my knowledge.

I recall reading one of Nemo Blank's epic tales, "Ring Toss," and thinking that his view of Brittany as violence prone was taking things too far. A typical quote from that story (quoting from Kevin's thoughts):

Brittany would kill him if she found out about it. Really kill him. She was a black belt and liked to break bricks in her backyard. She was getting physical with him in more ways than one, these days.

...and...

Brittany's fists clenched and her features hardened into an all too familiar mask of rage. "You big jerk!" It came out as a scream of pure hatred. Kevin backpedaled, eyes widening... She moved so fast that he never even glimpsed the blow that felled him.

This is as good a time as any to announce that I was wrong. My bad! Nemo apparently got it right, although Brittany doesn't appear to know karate. She's more of a gymnastic but undisciplined (thankfully) dirty fighter. Nemo even explained that Kevin wears his football pads all day long to absorb some of the blows Brittany deals out, which makes sense. Then he gave Brittany a massive multi-drug addiction originally meant to contain her rage. Wow.

Okay, to be sure, the above examples (plus her spontaneous rodeo pile-driving of a striker who hit Kevin in "Monster") come from the first two seasons of Daria. Maybe she mellowed out later on.

As we will see in Part II, the answer is painfully plain.

Food for Thought: Bad-Ass Brittany

A lot of fans remember Brittany Taylor's stunning display of military acumen at the paintball field in "The Daria Hunter," but a more direct example of her combat prowess appears in "Monster."

When boyfriend Kevin gets whaled on by grocery store employees for crossing a picket line, Brittany, wearing a pink gown, jumps on the back of an assailant and opens up a 55-gallon drum of grade-A high-octane WWE-certified whupass. She becomes the original pit bull with lipstick, captured in all her savage glory on videotape.

Discuss.

Party Till You Wake the Dead!

I guess the above would be the Fashion Club equivalent of a Halloween party, with everyone wearing hideously unfashionable clothing. Hope you party is going well. No trick-or-treaters here yet. Oh, wait, five just came by. More coming.

Brief mention of Daria in a humorous way appears in this article about upcoming events in Philadelphia. Just search for the word. I got a laugh out of it.

Also found a recording of the song "Daria," by Cake. Kind of alternative/odd, not a fast-beat song. Interesting, but I like anything by Splendora better.

About ten trick-or-treaters in all, not very many. Still got a while to go, though. More later. Sorry: moar l8r! And keep Halloween in your thoughts, like Andrea does!

Monster?

It was 11 years ago today that "Monster" premiered on MTV. We got a special peek into Daria and Quinn's childhood, plus Jane's admission that she wants to walk a poodle. And Kevin and Brittany are into The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (I'll never watch that again.)

Latest DariaWiki entry: Leaving Summer. Thanks to Richard Lobinske. Oops! Correction, it's Vlademir1, by Disco316. Correction: Oh, forget it.

SPECIAL NEWS: Remember "Daria @ Raft"? The incomplete comic strip is being discussed here on PPMB.

He blinked the dust out of his eyes . . . and Jane was in front of him, floating a few inches over the ground. She carried a baseball bat in a loose grip in her right hand. Tom tried to give her a smile: “Oh, hi.” “Oh, hi,” Jane repeated, her tone mocking. “Go to Hell!”
  • On the Clock, by Legendeld (Part 1): She left me alone to do my work all this time and I know they must have pointed in my direction and pushed her. • Unnamed story, by Roentgen (Part 1): Roentgen has once again put a story that MUST be continued in the wrong thread. See if you can guess the crossover. (Scissors could, I bet.)

The Vanishing Photographer

In the Beavis and Butt-head episode, "Sporting Goods," fifteen-year-old Daria complains, "My parents made me join the school paper. The paper made me fashion reporter because I'm a girl. I hate fashion! There's no fashion in this town! I want to be an inquiring photographer." She then proceeds to use her skills to put an embarrassing photo of B&B, with accompanying article, in the school newspaper.

One year later, in "The New Kid," she briefly joins the yearbook staff of another high school and again becomes a photographer, but only to get a first-person shooter game for her computer by trading in the software her parents will get for her. Her interest in becoming an inquiring photographer is gone, despite the high praise lavished on her photography work by Ted Dewitt-Clinton. Daria's interest in photography reappears only rarely in the series. She creates a photographic essay for Mr. O'Neill (in The Daria Database) and makes a video of her sister in "Monster," but that's about it.

Whatever happened to the budding "inquiring photographer"? Why did Daria stop using her considerable talent at camerawork? Could this interest return later in her life, perhaps in college? Not many fanfics have looked at Daria's photography skills (except in AU stories), and it would be nice to see that inquiring photographer resurrected, with a very Daria-ish twist.
