Who Was that Masked Mack Daddy?

Mack is enjoying the anniversary of the first appearance of the Lone Ranger on this day in 1933. Either that, or he's found a new way to get Kevin to leave him alone.

Today is also the anniversary of Daria's infamous appearance on Robot Chicken. I'm not even going to go into that one, for various reasons.

When I play this rusty old harp, my soul TWEEEEEEET!

Daria's on the right track for National Kazoo Day--a harmonica is kind of like a kazoo, and I think Jake and Helen would be even more annoyed with kazoo music than they were with harmonica music. Go ahead and grab a kazoo and join in, and never mind the complaining neighbors!

Today is also the anniversary of Jackson Pollock's birth in 1912, so this would be a good time to throw a Jackson Pollock-themed dance party. Don't forget the detached arms gripping the steering wheel!

Fanfic Update!
  • Beware the fan that feeds you (Iron Chef: Fictional Reaction), by TheBrodsterBoy (COMPLETE!): "'Ugh.....where am I?' Andrea looked around, wherever she was, it wasn't home. Or Kansas."

  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 1): "Lawndale population least than two thousand, home of the Lawndale Lions a typical middle class suburban town were nothing ever really happens and the stuff that did happen wasn't even worth mentioning."

  • Nun Too Holy (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by nightbeast37 (COMPLETE!): "Jake couldn't help but chuckle at what he was seeing. Quinn of all people had started walking around, completely dressed up in a nun's habit, for some reason. This was quite surprising for his fashionista daughter to do so."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Fictional Reaction), by Scissors MacGillicutty (part 1): "Pain unlike any she had known before made her wake up. She felt dull pains in her joints, sharp pain on patches of skin, pains like longings in her muscles, and a rhythmic beat of a headache."

  • You Know You've Done Something Wrong, by YouthofOz (parts 1 - 15): "I suppose you could call me 'Andrew.' Much less formal than narrator, isn't it? Not that I'm really a narrator, just a passing observer." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12) (Part 13) (Part 14) (Part 15)

No Worries, Daria!

Daria is not too impressed about Australia Day, but that may just be because she's not actually Australian. To all the Australian Daria fans out there, enjoy your day!

Today is also Spouse's Day, so if you have an Australian spouse, then so much the better! Otherwise, let's just reflect on how many dysfunctional marriages exist in Lawndale and count our own blessings, shall we?

May I Compliment You on Your Peanuts?

Mr. DeMartino doesn't seem to be enjoying National Peanut Butter Day very much, but he should know it could be worse: he could have sat on an antique peanut butter sandwich. If peanuts have hijacked your brain, then go munch a bunch of your nutty friend's lunch!

Today is also Compliment Day, and so we turn to the immortal words of Helen Morgendorffer: "We tell you over and over again that you're wonderful and you just...don't...get it! What's wrong with you?!" Hope your compliments are better than that.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Black Hole (Iron Chef: Dense Daria), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Mom, I think there's something wrong with me,' Daria said to her mother. Helen looked up from her paperwork, concerned. 'What do you mean, sweetie?' she asked."

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 8): "'Sur- prise......?' his enthusiastic greeting fell upon seeing the crestfallen look when she recognized that it was him- her boyfriend- standing before her."

  • The Fine Print (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Sofa King (COMPLETE!): "Kevin Thompson opens his eyes, and looks around. As near as he can tell, he appears to be in a cave... but that can't be right! Bewildered, he holds the back of his head, as he continues to look around. 'Where am I?'"

  • Melody Powers, by ST91 (COMPLETE!): "The sun was setting on Rio Beach. It dyed the sea with a wonderful reddish tint. Anyone would have been enchanted by that sight but not Melody Powers."

  • Sandi The Betrayed Wife (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Kevin is shoveling snow out of Sandi's driveway. He's just finished and proceeds to shovel the snow off the walkway leading to her front door. He passes by her kitchen window when he notices something that freaks him out." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Thank U, by Lady Evil (part 32): "Jane was sitting on the steps of the erstwhile gazebo, reading the instruction manual when Jesse sat next to her. 'Hey.' he said. 'Hey, Jesse.' said Jane. 'Trying to figure out this thing so the turkey will be ready at least before Christmas.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Fictional Reaction), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Dear Diary, I have managed to survive another day in Stone Ridge. In two months, I will 'graduate', and by 'graduate' I will be officially off to CC-Baltimore County."

  • A Whole New World Of Boys, Just Waiting To Be Conquered... (Iron Chef: Fictional Reaction), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Wait a minute. I'm a fictional character from another universe who somehow got transported into yours - the REAL universe.'"

What is Best in Feistiness?

Upchuck's not fooling anyone with that alter ego, although it is appropriate for the birthday of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. While I can certainly believe he'd be a fan, I have my doubts that Upchuck would make any enemies tremble in fear, unless it's fear of his awful pick-up lines.

Nice Tux, Sandi!

Someone better tell The Angst Guy that today is Penguin Awareness Day! I know people say that Sandi can be cold, but I think she's taken it too far this time. Did Waif say that feathers are in this season?

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of director Federico Fellini in 1920. Fellini is best known for indirectly causing the downfall of Jane and Tom's relationship and precipitating The Kiss...and some award-winning films, I guess.

Fanfic Update!
  • A.R.C Chapter 10 Imprisoned, by ST91 (parts 7 and 8): "That afternoon Charles tried to behave as if nothing had happened. He did his homework and then read a book. However every time the phone rang he would sprint like a hunting dog to answer." (Part 8)

  • But You Don't Like Anyone (Iron Chef: Daria the Unreliable Narrator), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Daria? Is that you?' 'No, I'm a decoy to flush out assassins,' said Daria, a little brusque. Amelia laughed at the joke anyway. 'I was afraid you weren't coming. What's new?' She became aware she was rubbing her arm a little too much."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 17): "Erin felt a surge of relief as Gregor answered the phone, 'The Erin! How is Gregor's third favourite straight girl?' Erin grinned at Gregor's usual extravagance, 'I have got myself in trouble.'"

  • Jane's Procrastination, by TheBrodsterBoy (COMPLETE!): "It was a fine day at Laaawndale High, well, maybe not fine. The weather was pretty shite. That's not the point. The point is Daria and Jane were walking and Daria was speaking to Jane about the week."

  • A Musician's Life is Such a Drag (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "'Trent?' 'Mmmf.' 'Trent!' 'Zzzzzzz.' 'TRENT!!!' 'I swear, the cow was tipped over when I got here! Oh, hey Janey. What's going on?'"

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 162): "Mack sat with Sandi on a bench located on the Arboureum Floor. The smell of fresh tree permeated the air and Mack remembered when he leaned up against one of the trees and ended up with a hand covered with sap."

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 10): "The cordless phone rang while Ben was watching the sports channel in the living room. Jakey and Helen were running errands and their two daughters were visiting friends. Little Rikka was upstairs. He turned it over to press the 'ANSWER' button and glanced at the telephone ID. He'd guessed wrong. It was Mom."

Cold Off the Presses!

On this day in 2002, an article appeared in Animation Magazine about the show Daria. It featured an interview with Glenn Eichler and offers some interesting insights into both the show and the character of Daria herself. Worth a read if you haven't seen it before!

I Hope She Won't Be on Top of the Pyramid!

Kevin had better get appreciating for Appreciate a Dragon Day, or at the very least stop hitting on Angie for the love of God! Do you have a death wish, man?

If dragons aren't your thing, how about gorillas? Today is the anniversary of Dian Fossey's birth in 1932, and without Fossey there would be no Lawndale High School Dian Fossey Award for Dazzling Academic Achievement in the Face of Near-Total Misanthropy. And does anyone else besides me really want to find out the story behind that award?

Fanfic Update!
  • Cuckoos On Infinite Earths, by Smijey (part 28): "'I still can't believe you invited me to dinner with your family,' Daria said. 'Well, it is Christmastime,' Janice -- or Ms. J, as she was publicly known -- dismissed."

  • David M., by ST91 (part 7): "Saturday morning was the time of the week that David loved most. The start of 48 hours without school or gym; only time dedicated to himself."

  • IncorporaTed (The Ted Zone), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Mr. DeMartino stood in front of the classroom, holding a stack of papers. 'Here are the results of your career aptitude tests,' he was saying. 'If any of you have the misfortune of getting "teacher" for a result, be advised that, per Ms. Li, suicide attempts are not permissible on school grounds.'"

  • Iron Chef: Truth or Dare, by Charles RB (part 9): "'Dare,' he said. Sandi had been really, really fixed on asking him 'truth' and seeing what she could shake loose. 'Fine. I dare you to... er... Okay, you have to sing a showtune.'"

  • Moments of Transition, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Here, take this. You look like you could use it.' Jaime looked up from the high-backed, solid wood bench he sat upon to see a young, college-age woman stand in front of him, a paper coffee cup in hand."

  • The New Courtier (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "She should never had sought out the book."

  • No time for Q&A session (World's Shortest Crossover XV: A New Era In Crossovers), by Walter Kovacs (COMPLETE!): "It's easy to lose track of say two teenage girls in the middle of a mutiny while all kinds of chaos both on earth, as well as on board the United Earth ship Aratrum is going on. This fact is why Daria and Jane were able to wander the corridors of the ship without anyone asking questions."

  • Thank U, by Lady Evil (part 31): "Jake parked the car in front of the house, he and Helen not wanting to go in for a while."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by TheBrodsterBoy (COMPLETE!): "'Hey Daria, you here?' Jane had become very concerned about Daria's recent disappearance. She hadn't showed up for pizza."

  • When Mom's Away (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Daria is speaking with her oncologist regarding her cancer. Quinn is there to provide support. The doctor, a gray haired man in his fifties, said 'So, after you recover from the hysterectomy we start you on chemo. Any questions?'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

(Not) My Hero

Happy birthday to Dave Grohl, lead singer of the Foo Fighters and voice of Daniel Dotson, arguably one of the most repulsive Daria characters ever. I suspect Grohl only puts one of those on his resume.

Incidentally, I only just noticed Daniel Dotson's unfortunate right hand placement and now I can't unsee it. Bet you can't, either. You're welcome.

Jesse's taking a turn as shock jock Howard Stern, although I don't think he has the same colorful personality as Stern. For one thing, he doesn't have a personality. Still, I'm impressed by whomever found a way to get Jesse to wear a shirt.

Fanfic Update!
  • About that Winner... (Iron Chef: MegaMillions), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Hey Daria.' 'What Jane?' 'You remember that billion dollar lottery a couple months ago.' 'Yes. My parents bought a hundred dollars worth of those tickets and won six dollars.'"

  • The Aga Khan Trophy (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "A gentle summer shower cooled the air on a warm August afternoon as Andrea looked out at the historic Royal Dublin Society's showground in Ballsbridge."

  • The Captain of the Squad (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): ""Five, four, six, eight. Who do we appreciate? Lions! Lions! Lions! As the Lawndale Cheerleading squad for the Lions began one of the more complicated parts of their routine, filled with lots of high kicks, jumps, splits, and climaxing in the six strongest members lifting up the lightest three of the boys on the squad, the head of the squad, Kevin Thompson stood on the base formed of fellow members Robert and Mack and continued with, "We are the Lawndale Lions! We never back down from a fight! We always win! Go Lions, Go! Let's Hear a Roar!" and fell with an elaborate tumble, completing his liberty stunt."

  • Cuckoos On Infinite Earths, by Charles RB (part 27): "'Highdale looks almost nice,' said Janice, looking out at the streets that while worn and poor-but-proud working class were lacking the edgy atmosphere and the neon glare of her world."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 18): "Daria sat at her desk in the library using VR goggles to see the view from Tom's rover. He was leading the welcoming committee for the new arrivals."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 16): "Erin dragged herself from bed. Sleep had not been effective and Erin felt seedy. Orange juice and two headache pills were all the breakfast Erin could face."

  • 5 Fanfics that Daria Morgendorffer Bookmarked (And One She Didn't), by Blake C Stacey (part 3): "Jane Lane lifted her fork and scrutinized the syrup-drenched fragment of pancake upon it. 'You're telling me this is vegan? But it looks so ... real.'"

  • Giant Leap (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "The Martian landscape was not as red as you see in pictures; it was more of a dull orange, really. Some people might have been put off by that, but to Jodie Landon it still looked like the Land of Opportunity."

  • Iron Chef: Truth or Dare, by Roentgen and Princess_Pasta (parts 7 and 8): "Tom smirked. 'Okay, Charles. This is one I've been thinking about for a long time. And by the way, Jane? I think that answer of yours was bullshit and I think you should take the dare.'" (Part 8)

  • No Brainy Janeys Allowed, by TheBrodsterBoy (COMPLETE!): "'So, this is the place that drove The Zon out of business.' Daria and Jane walked towards the entrance of the new club, The Salted Wound."

  • Thank U, by Lady Evil (part 30): "'Vixx, honey,' said Ollie. 'Can you help me put this on?' Ollie held up a pearl choker. She was dressed in a little black shoulder baring dress while Vixx was in her pajamas."

  • Three Devils (IC: Random Alter-Ego Tales), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "It was a balmy Spring day, overcast, not the best weather for riding but – then again - Daria didn't have much of choice."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 161): " 'Hello?' 'Hello, is this Erin Chambers?' 'May I ask who is calling?' 'Hello, my name is Frank Bowes, I'm a reporter for US Journal. I'm asking if there's any way - ' "

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 9): "On Saturday, Daria woke up just after 8:00. She just was not a morning person. Rikka's side of the bed was already empty; clearly she wasn't going to waste her time waiting for Daria to wake up and get going. She walked into the bathroom, showered, then walked back to her bedroom to get dressed."

Any Green Thumbs in the House?

Clearly no one is properly appreciating this plant, even though it's Houseplant Appreciation Day. Then again, I have to admit that I'm impressed that the Morgendorffers have managed to keep any houseplants alive.

For those not interested in horticulture, today is also Peculiar People Day. As far as Daria is concerned, you can have your pick of those!

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog

Jake's just thrilled to learn that it's Typing Day, although I would put any money that he's the hunt-and-peck type. Still, no one said it had to be touch typing, so keep plugging away at it, Jakey!

Today is also a day for people like Jane: Male Watcher's Day. I don't think Jane's likely to wait until a once-a-year opportunity for this, though, as we've seen in multiple episodes. Enjoy your gawking!

Fanfic Update!
  • Ashtrapped, by WellTemperedClavier (part 2): "Daria took stock of her situation as she walked down the strider port's earthen ramp, her legs re-acclimating to solid ground after more than a day on the swaying strider. She and her sister were in a strange land, completely penniless, and nobody knew they were there."

  • Iron Chef: Truth or Dare, by Charles RB and Vukodlak (parts 5 and 6): "'So, Jane,' she asked with a mischievous smile. 'Truth or Dare?' 'Give me truth, justice, and the Ameeeeerican way,' said Jane, attempting an impression of Principal Li and biffing it at the last second." (Part 6)

  • On The Road, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'Do you think we should let everyone- I don't know get dressed up or something?' Brad asked Quinn. 'Oh no,' Quinn spoke confidently after checking her lipstick."

  • Something New, by fightmehoe429 (COMPLETE!): "They say that high school will be the best years of your life but that seems to be a different story for a girl who goes by the name of Jane Lane."

  • Thank U, by Lady Evil (part 29): "The Morgendorfer family sat down to dinner. Jake only picked at his lasagna. 'I wanna go look for her.' he said after awhile."

Does Spaghetti Oxidize, Too?

Jake's upset either because he's wearing dinner or because he accidentally served penne instead of spaghetti on National Spaghetti Day. Trent will be happy, because spaghetti is his favorite. Or was it fettuccini bolognese?

At least we can see that the pasta is falling downwards, indicating that gravity is still working properly. That would be good news to Isaac Newton, born on this day in 1643, if he were still alive.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ashtrapped, by WellTemperedClavier (part 1): "The caravaner's gray hands hovered over the silt strider's exposed brain. She raised her right hand, hesitated for a moment, and then pressed the index and middle fingers into a whorl on the organ's green and rubbery surface."

  • Fates Entwined, by Deep Metal (part 25): "At the end of the journey, both the van and the bus carrying Daria and the rest of the Highland survivors arrived at Lawndale."

  • Misadventures in Babysitting, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "'Girls, I have something very important to talk to you about,' Helen said, coming into the living room with Jake. Her daughters, three-year-old Quinn and four-year-old Daria, looked at her in mild alarm. 'I didn't do it!' Quinn yelped, mostly out of habit. 'Yes, she did,' Daria said blandly, also out of habit."

  • On The Road, by elainefr (part 52): "Applause...... all that applause...... and it's for us, The Spiral! We've made it...... We've really made it! We did it guys. Nick, Max, Jesse we did it! I can't wait until she-"

  • Pretty, by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "'Wow, you're soooo pretty,' said five-year-old Tiffany Oshiro. 'Why, thank you, Tiffany,' the woman said, her curly blonde hair flowing down her shoulders as she bent down."

  • Rich Girls, Romance and Novels, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "One if the most intriguing aspects of the Legion, when we look back on its first years, is the manner in which its demographics broke down."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 160): "'As you can see, we have some very odd results. As you can see, the slight droop in Charles's right eyelid remains constant throughout the Projection A evolution but is completely corrected in Projection B. Charles's nose is about 6 degrees to the right of a straight line in Projection A, and this deviation from a straight vertical line is all but gone in Projection B.'"

I see Upchuck has tragically misunderstood the point of Run it Up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day. It's also very unlikely that anyone's going to salute, either. Still, at least he's safely away from everyone else, and that's good news.
