And What Would Ms. Li Think?

Mr. DeMartino had better put that cigarette out, because it's World No Tobacco Day and it's probably a good idea for him to quit. Never mind his health; the cost alone is surely more than his tiny paycheck can handle.

Fanfic Update!
  • Dreams Rewoven, by RLobinske (part 6): "Christmas morning, and brightly colored wrapping paper and gift bags littered the floor as the four sat around the living room sipping eggnog."

  • Meant to Find You, by PrecambrianStudios (part 2): "The last of the party guests were gone; the only sign anyone had ever been there were the piles of confetti and stains from the spilt punch decorating the floor."

  • What If The Storm Killed Them?, by The Madi Hatter (part 3): "The next two weeks where what you may call, eventful. People in and out to see the recuperating Daria and Trent. Nobody stayed for more than a week except Jane, who was in a hotel near by."

Racing Dust AND Compost Dirt? Ewwww!

Looks like Stacy just won the Indianapolis 500, which takes place today. I don't know what Waif Magazine would say about that dirt on her face, but I don't think Stacy really cares right now.

This is also Learn About Composting Day, so I'd suggest talking to Willow to get some advice. Or, if she's getting a little frustrated with the hippie lifestyle, you might want to ask someone else.

"...Always wear your sunscreen!"

Looks like Stacy forgot it was Sun Screen Day, or else Quinn forgot to bring enough for the whole Fashion Club again. Either way, she's definitely not going to earn Sandi's approval for this little faux pas.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 15): "Neither of the two friends were quite sure how it happened, but the ability Mr O'Neill had to hear whatever he wanted in whatever you were saying was surely to blame."

  • Meant to Find You, by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "'You know, somehow I never expected mom and dad to pimp me out,' said the girl with brown hair held together by a band."

  • What If The Storm Killed Them?, by The Madi Hatter (part 2): "Daria opened her eyes slowly reveling a white room with a faint smell of bleach. Still groggy from waking up from however long she was asleep she started to gain memory of what had last happened"

Happy Towel Day, Hoopy Froods!

Mrs. Johanssen clearly knows where her towel is for Towel Day, and we all hope it stays right where it is. Today is the holiday for fans of the late Douglas Adams, whose Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series has been referenced in various Daria fanfics.

Appropriately, today is also Geek Pride Day, and this fandom has some of the best geeks I've ever met. Er, that's the "likes geeky stuff" kind of geek, not the "biting heads off chickens" kind of geek. Just so you know.

And You Thought Tiffany Was the Slowest One!

Barch is dressed appropriately for World Turtle Day, and this actually kind of explains how Barch's husband got away so easily: it's not like she would have been able to catch him after he left. Then again, maybe this alter ego is simply the result of a strange science experiment gone very wrong. You can be sure that she'll blame Mack for it, though.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 14): "'The Yaegers are coming for the weekend,' Helen informed Daria when questioned on what she was doing getting out one of the many kitchen appliances that, despite it never getting used, they'd kept when they moved from Highland."

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 8): "Daria turned. 'Jane! Damnit, I told you to stay there and be safe!' 'And I told you that if you weren't right behind me, I'd be back to get you!'"

  • Morning Routines, by JPAGC (part 1): "The alarm bell was irritating. For the melody (if one could call it that), for the hour, for the necessity but, above all, for the fact it was taking her of the warmth of sleep and dreams."

  • The Wedding of Daria, Princess of Zippotron, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Queen Quinn, of the House of Morgendorffer, sub-house of Barksdale, of the Great Zippotronian Empire, gave her royal command to her loyal subject, loyal in public at least and only up to a point."

  • What If The Storm Killed Them?, by The Madi Hatter (part 1): "Daria laid out on the plush love-seat in her Seattle apartment typing. She was 26 years old writing her third novel."

No Pity for This Fool

Mr. O'Neill only wishes he could be this awesome. In reality, he is perhaps the biggest fool Mr. T, who was born on this day in 1952, has ever pitied. For more Daria/Mr. T. fun, see Smijey's The Mr. T. Trilogy.

And speaking of fools, today also marks the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "One J at a Time." Between Jake's squirrel-catching antics and Quinn's doomed-from-the-start search for a boyfriend, there was plenty of foolishness to go around in that one.

Who Turned Out the Lights?

The entire Lane clan is recreating New England's Dark Day, which occurred on this day in 1780. I don't think anyone accidentally tried to use anyone else as a pillow during that event, but then again who can say?

In more recent anniversaries, the start of Lawndale Stalker's fanfic "Blood on the Asphalt" took place on this day in 1991. Read the story to find out more!

Fanfic Update!
  • Transformation (Pasta's Never-ending Ideas Thread!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'So, this is where all of my coffee cups have run off to'. Daria Morgendorffer shook her head as she took one from the cabinet, already on her third cup of the day."

Now She's Ready for that Pizza with Entrails

Jane is, appropriately enough, portraying Jane. That is, Jane from the Tarzan movies, as portrayed by the late Maureen O'Sullivan, who was born on this day in 1911. I guess she decided that even though dying her hair didn't work out, she could still find some way to get in touch with her inner tiger.

Pay No Attention to the Educator Behind the Curtain!

Ms. Li, as the Wizard of Oz, commands you all to wish a happy birthday to L. Frank Baum, who was born on this day in 1856. Baum, of course, created the Oz book series that was referenced in several Daria episodes. Ms. Li as the Wizard actually works quite well--lots of bluster and bluffing but little real competence when it comes down to it.

This is also International Day of Families, so celebrate by following the example of the well-adjusted Morgendorffers--er, I mean the Landons--okay, bad idea...the Lanes--oops, no, but how about the Taylors....

You know what? Forget it. I give up.

Fanfic Update!
  • Consequences, by Zetor (part 1): "Daria sat leaning against the side of the storage shed on the school’s roof, staring up at the clouds with a relaxed smile that she would be mortified for anyone but the person beside her to see."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 13): "As soon as Daria opened the front door, she heard the strained tones of Helen talking to Rita on the phone, and winced. 'Damn,' Daria said, and promptly closed the door again."

  • See Jane Date, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Jane smoothed down the front of her blue mini skirt and gave her sleeveless red top a couple tugs not really trying to cover her bare tummy. She gathered her thick, raven hair up tight on her head and secured the mass with a wide golden scrunchie, all before smirking at herself in the mirror."

  • Survival of the DoctorDonna, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "They had left the alternate Darlig Ulv Stranden, and had returned to their home universe. 'I thought we could try the planet Felspoon,' Donna said. 'Just because. What a good name, Felspoon. Apparently, it's got mountains that sway in the breeze. Mountains that move. Can you imagine?'"

Does This Shamrock Make Me Look Fat?

Tiffany's looking more energetic than usual on this Leprechaun Day, and I didn't even know she was Irish. I suppose it could work, though: gold is really shiny, after all.

Let's hope the luck of the leprechauns can cancel out the bad luck of Friday the 13th, but if not then you'd better watch out. The last thing you'd want to do today is walk under a ladder or break a mirror...unless it's that awful one in the girls' bathroom that adds at least two pounds. The Fashion Club might consider destroying that one a public service.

Let's Hear it for Surreal Nurses!

Jane's less than thrilled to celebrate the anniversary of Salvador Dali's birth in 1904, but that's probably because she's painted one too many reproductions...or should I say forgeries? I still think that Gary is shiftier than he seems.

If her arm keeps hurting, Jane might want to take advantage of School Nurse Day and visit Lawndale High's Nurse Chase. Unless Nurse Chase is too busy collecting DNA samples on behalf of Ms. Li.

Fanfic Update!
  • Doctor Who: Unexpected, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Tamsin Davis was bored. It had been a boring night, waiting in the TARDIS console room, while the Doctor was on his misguided attempt at 'fighting crime' in the American city they had landed in a few months ago."

  • Doctor Who: Ways Clara Oswald ..., by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "The Doctor looked as Clara walked down the Street. 'Let me be brave,' she said. 'No! There has to be a way to defeat a Quantum Shade! Just because a method hasn't been found, doesn't mean that they can't be defeated,' he thought."

  • Stones Have a Way, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Before closing her school locker, Daria made a last long look up and down the hallway as it cleared out after lunch period. She didn't see the slight, blonde girl in crisp prep-school uniform for whom she was looking." (Epilogue)

Not to Mention the Ones That Disappear in the Dryer

Daria and Jane are observing Lost Sock Memorial Day by mourning the tragic separation of two socks from Brittany Taylor's laundry/make-out room. Daria may have been pleased to leave with a bonus sock, but that pair will never be the same again.

Giddy-up, Helen!

Helen and Jake are all ready to compete in the Kentucky Derby today, but I think they might have some trouble. First of all, Jake's probably too big to be a jockey. Secondly, the Kentucky Derby probably requires that the contestants be actual, you know, horses. Still, good luck to those two and good luck to the rest of you in getting that very disturbing image out of your heads.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 12): "When the Morgendorffer family were packing up their house in Texas, it was decided that they would also do a thorough clean-out – something they hadn't done the previous couple of times they'd moved, and almost didn't this time either."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 5a and 5b): "The school year ended in early June. Jake got a promotion to assistant sales manager, and Helen began to go to the office for a few hours weekdays, often taking Ronnie with her." (Part 5b)

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 40): "Listening to Daria fret over scholarships made Vinny depressed. He had thought about college since Daria pushed him on it. He really did look up various art schools across the country."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 10): "Somewhere on the moon, inside a large blocky structure, two blocky cubic beings, one purple and one green, sat in chairs while looking at a large screen. On the screen were two ugly spikey creatures."

Communists: The Ultimate Team Players

Mr. O'Neill is condemning the bourgeoisie in honor of Karl Marx's birth on this day in 1818. In the immortal words of Brittany Taylor, "Go, commies, go!" Unless you're part of a 1950's-era fantasy sequence in "Legends of the Mall," in which case the Reds aren't really so bad but Beatniks still kind of suck. Anyone care for some canned peaches?

It's Better to be Feared than to Teach

Mr. DeMartino is breaking the bad news to Mrs. Bennett that even though today is National Teacher Day, there is no pay raise on the horizon. However, surely having your own holiday makes up for having to deal with Kevin and Brittany on an almost-daily basis, doesn't it?

No? Yeah, I suppose not.

Today is also the anniversary of Niccolo Machiavelli's birth in 1469, so it's time to stop putting off taking over that country you've had your eye on.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 4c and 4d): "It was a cold and dreary day at Grimmauld Place. The sun was hidden by thick clouds and a cold wind swayed the branches of the trees and bushes of the small, ill-kept park across the street from the town house." (Part 4d)

  • Past Lives (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "Lawndale Haven House was one of only two youth homeless shelters in the tiny Maryland suburb, something that Daria Morgendorffer attributed to the fact that people wrongly assumed nobody could be homeless in such a wealthy area."

There Was an Old Cynic Who Lived in a Shoe....

Brush off the old book of nursery rhymes, because it's Mother Goose Day. Daria looks less than thrilled to be stuck in the role, but you can't deny that she has a gift for coming up with new twists on the old classics.
