I Guess They're Superstitious

Daria and Jane are horrified to learn that today is Friday the 13th, but I wouldn't be so upset. After all, Friday the 13th is still a Friday, and that's a win right there!

However, Jake might want to stay out of the kitchen on this unlucky day, because it's National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day and he's a menace when cooking at even the best times. All he needs is too much of a free hand with the pepper and his tongue will be black in no time.

At least Jane can take comfort in today being National Jane Day, so that should cancel out any bad luck she might have experienced. Just as long as she stays far away from any of Jake's cooking.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria's Party Addition, by DrT9999 (part 23): "Dolly Frasier knew the right people, and knew that money talked. She had the invitations for the ceremony in hand before noon that Saturday morning."

  • Mysteries of Aurora, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 17): "Freya and Alexia came out of the lecture. 'So, what was that about an ancient manuscript, again?' Alexia asked."

  • Spider Quinn 17 Tempestuous Origin of Mysterio, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "SpiderGirl re-entered the theater area and saw that it was still full of the green mist, she saw Peterson nearby, as well as three young men, including Trent, talking to her."

A Dream of Paraskevidekatriaphobia!

Quinn's got her fantasies all lined up for Make Your Dream Come True Day, but I hope she realizes that it will take more than closing your eyes and wishing to make most dreams actually come true. Unless your dream is to take a nap, I guess. Looks like Trent's dreams are about to come true, anyway!

Let's hope no one's dreams become nightmares, because it's also Friday the 13th! I'm not superstitious, but if you are then maybe avoid mirrors and black cats today. Better yet, send the black cats my way so I can pet them!

Left, Right, Left, Right!

While Brittany tries to work out whether she's a righty or a lefty, let me wish all the left-handed people out there (including my husband and daughter) a happy Left Hander's Day! Keep smudging that ink on the side of your hand with pride, guys!

Please be extra careful no matter which hand is your dominant one, though, because today is also Friday the 13th. Avoid ladders, don't break any mirrors, and if you see a black cat...pet it. It's a cute little kitty!

Fanfic Update!
  • An American Band, by ladyevil (parts 1 and 2): "Daria sat on Jane’s bed watching TV. A promo for the next episode of Sick, Sad World came on." (Part 2)

  • Getting Out From Under It, by Erin M (part 2): "'What the hell?!' Jane yelped, sliding back so far she almost fell off the log. The older Jane reached out and caught her forearm, preventing the teenager from taking a spill."

  • Ozark Odyssey (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by linnofthewoods (parts 5 and 6): "Daria was certainly not expecting to find Jane awake when she entered the house with Rose." (Part 6)

How Many Pink Ostriches Had to Die to Create Those Ear Muffs?

Quinn's sure enjoying Ear Muff Day, and so are the three Js. I think the poor Lawndale High students who enjoy having food and other supplies are less thrilled about it, though.

They're all probably feeling extra unlucky because today is also Friday the 13th. Makes you wonder what the Holiday Island version is like, doesn't it? Perpetually unlucky or just especially superstitious?

Beware!

Ms. Li is horrified to find that today is Friday the 13th, or maybe she just realized that she forgot to feed the bomb-sniffing dogs. Either way, keep in mind that today is also Defy Superstition Day, so go ahead and cross a black cat's path and walk under a ladder if you feel like it.

Today is also International Chocolate Day, so it's possible that Ms. Li just caught someone eating unauthorized chocolate. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Fanfic Update!
  • Happy Adversity, by Lady Evil (part 10): "'Here.' Clarissa said, giving Link a wrapped gift. 'I hope you like it. Happy birthday.' 'Thanks.' said Link. He decided he'd better be a polite party host. 'Want some party mix?' 'I can't.' said Clarissa. 'Nut allergy.'"

  • What You Deserve, by atiyatortilla (part 1): "Memory was a fickle thing. Daria Quinn Morgendorffer knew this better than most."

Have a Spooky Scrabble Day!

Daria's going for a high score on Scrabble Day! While she didn't hit a triple word score she just might win her freedom from arbitrary parental punishments.

I hope she's not superstitious, though--today being Friday the 13th could mean bad luck for her Get Out of Jail Free plan. On the other hand, she could try playing "triskaidekaphobia" and really impress her opponents.

Eep!

Jane and Daria are just a little bit nervous about Friday the 13th, but they should really know better than to give in to superstition. After all, today is also International Skeptics Day! Still, if I had to attend a school run by Ms. Li and interact with students like Kevin and Upchuck, I might feel a certain amount of dread about every weekday--so maybe their fear doesn't have anything to do with the date.

Does This Shamrock Make Me Look Fat?

Tiffany's looking more energetic than usual on this Leprechaun Day, and I didn't even know she was Irish. I suppose it could work, though: gold is really shiny, after all.

Let's hope the luck of the leprechauns can cancel out the bad luck of Friday the 13th, but if not then you'd better watch out. The last thing you'd want to do today is walk under a ladder or break a mirror...unless it's that awful one in the girls' bathroom that adds at least two pounds. The Fashion Club might consider destroying that one a public service.

Today is a bad day to be superstitious, because it's Friday the 13th! Watch out for broken mirrors and indoor umbrellas, and especially watch out for Upchuck on the prowl. Then again, that's good advice every day of the year.

Fanfic Update!
  • Invader Quinn, by Anguirus1955 (parts 5 and 6): "Quinn rolled her eyes as she listened to Mr. Deckard, one of the science teachers at Lawndale High, hand out the class's homework assignment. 'Remember, this is due by Monday. You have tomorrow and the rest of the weekend to work on it, so no excuses for not having it done,' Mr. Deckard said." (Part 6)

  • Lawndale 2021, by Anguirus1955 (part 21): "'Say that again,' Sparks requested over the microphone. 'We're sending down some Navy Seals to investigate a missing submarine in the area. With tensions running high lately between China, Russia, and the members of the United Nations, we're just taking precautions,' said the man on the screen."

Just Keep the Fire Extinguisher Within Reach, Okay?

Jake's ready to whip us up a big batch of Kitchen Sink Stew because we're celebrating National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day, and Jake is their king. I'm going to go order some pizza, because Jake's latest cooking adventure is almost guaranteed to fail. After all, what else would you expect on Friday the 13th?

Fandom News!

Oh, No!

Daria and Jane suspect that they've just seen a black cat walk under a ladder while breaking a mirror, and that means extra bad luck on top of...(dramatic music)...Friday the 13th!

Still, there's no reason to be worried. After all, today is also Positive Thinking Day, so keep your spirits up instead of letting a bunch of superstitions get you down.

Oh, crap. I sound like Mr. O'Neill, don't I?

Fanfic Update!
  • Doctor Ewwww, by ognawk (prologue): "It's started, she thought as she stood up and backed away from the console. She looked at her hands and noticed they were glowing gold as well, with small trails of energy coming from her fingers. She could feel the energy building inside her as the trails became wider."

  • From Another Angle, by Shiva (part 2): "The first day back in Lawndale High was going as well as could be expected as far as Farrah was concerned. Oh sure, the teachers were as nutty and (mostly) unreliable as they had been her freshman year. However being able to socialize with her friends made up for it. Somewhat."

  • The Great And The Good, by ognawk (part 16): "'On that note, I need to arrange a meeting between the four of us. I have something that should explain more of what happened.' 'What could it be?' Tom asked, his curiousity piqued. 'Something I recorded at the colony. I'm not sure it will fix anything, but I think you, Daria and Jane need to at least hear it.'"

  • Mad Dog's Legacy Chapter 12: Hometown Hero, by Hyrin (part 2): "With the stride of an out-of-shape minor deity, Tommy Sherman strutted through the hallways of Lawndale High."

  • A New Direction (Iron Chef: My Dad, the director), by peetz5050 (part 11): "Stacy Rowe was tired. No, I mean really tired. She'd been up all night."

  • Six Million Dollars and a Few Tubes of Paint (IC: Disabled Daria), by Ranger Thorne (part 1): "Sitting on the side of the bed, he asked, 'How are you feeling?' Glaring at him with her one eye, she gritted her teeth and hissed, 'I'm missing half of me and you're wondering how I'm feeling?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: only one parent comes to Lawndale), by macross (part 1): "Down the Suburban Streets of Lawndale came a large black vehicle. Its design was a meeting of sophistication and sheer power. To the casual the observer it highly resembled the militaristic Humvee mated with the compact luxury SUV."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Why, oh God WHY?!), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As Mr. DeMartino screamed in agony, his now empty right eye socket oozing blood and puss, the classroom stared in horror."

Friday, July 13, 2012

Eep!

Look out, everyone! It's Friday the 13th once again, so try to avoid any open ladders, broken mirrors, or black cats. Also try to avoid Ms. Barch on a bad day and the Fashion Club on a makeover spree, but that's good advice no matter what day it is.

Today is also the anniversary of the airing of "Fair Enough" in 1998. Quinn's acting career suffers a major setback while Daria and Jane learn far more than they ever wanted to about Stacy's personal life.

Triple Word Score on "Friggatriskaidekaphobia"!

Happy National Scrabble Day! Today's the day to pull out the old board and lay down some tiles--even if you haven't been grounded by the distinguished members of Family Court.

But be careful, as today is also Friday the 13th! The Angst Guy used Friday the 13th as a character from Holiday Island in his fanfic A Hard Days' Night. Don't walk under any ladders or break any mirrors! Seriously, on that last one--the Fashion Club would kill you.

Finally it was on this day in 1997 that San Francisco Sunday Examiner & Chronicle published an interview with Daria. Check it out to see Our Heroine in the early days, before the fame went to her head! Or something.

Fanfic Update!
  • Andrea's Tears, by BrownEyedBagel (part 2): "I’m in a lot of pain right now, and that is an understatement. It’s been three months since I had a drink, and to be honest I’m sure as hell thinking about having one. I scream at no one in particular, the person I want to be yelling at isn’t here. To my credit, I’m not crying. Not this time."

  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 1: Esteem Rising, by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "PA: Attention! Attention! A state of emergency has been declared! All residents are to proceed to their nearest emergency shelter immediately in a calm and orderly fashion! Do not attempt to evacuate the colony! Repeat, a state of emergency... DARIA: Not that you seem like the type to listen to authority, but shouldn't we be looking for a shelter right now? JANE: Fuck that shit. We're blowing this joint."

  • Birthday Surprise (Iron Chef: Daria character wins lottery prize), by DeacBlue (part 9): "Paul looked at his girlfriend as she set the handset down. 'Rita, why are you doing this?' She glared at him. 'Because they're family, goddammit.' She set her hands on the table. 'I deserve a bigger piece of that pie then the measly ten thousand that that little bitch gave me. If they don't want to give it to me nicely, I guess I'll have to act like a Barksdale and work my way into it.'"

  • Disconnect the Dots, by InvisibleDan (part 11): "The bar was not that full, maybe because it was still relatively early, maybe because the weather had made everyone stay home. In the back I saw Susan sitting at a small table with three other men. She was flashing plenty of cleavage and had put on plenty of makeup, which I could see even from a distance. She spotted me and I waved hello and walked back towards her."

  • A Distant Lawndale (Part Two), by Arena del Sur (part 2): "I took my backpack and walked to the door. That morning we have a magnificent sun. I had enough time to pick up Jane, I left that my legs carried me on the path of every day. What pain did my father have kept deep down in his heart?"

  • Educator DeMartino in: DARIA DEATH LIVES (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: The Morning After), by Charles RB (part 2): "NIKKI: Ewwwww! NERDS! And they SMELL funny! TORI: They're not popular at ALL, I don't know what they're- Panel 2. The crowd get a better look at the Judges and start freaking - Daria has grabbed someone and is shoving them into the chip bowl. BRITTANY: AAAAA! They're not NORMAL NERDS!"

  • The Fight (Otherwise known as One J at a Time) (Iron Chef: Daria and Quinn, Best Friends), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'I'm a failure,' Quinn said. 'No your not. I may have given you unrealistic expectations on what being in a relationship intails,' Daria said. 'Wait a second that can't be right. I went to you for serious advice and you lied to me,' Quinn said looking confused."

  • God Save The Esteem ep41: Is It Fun Yet?, by Charles RB (part 7): "'Hmmm. I’m not sure where to start with this one. Wait, no, got it: security guards do go and tell people where they can and can’t stand. It’s a way of guarding a place in a secure manner. That’s why we’re called security guards.' 'I thought we just sat around doing nothing.' 'Ideally, but if someone tells us to do our jobs we have to actually go and do them,' explained Steve. 'Otherwise we get fired and then have to work in a harder job. This is where I’ve seen guards get it wrong.'"

  • Lawndale School of Magic Part One: The New Kids, by Reven384 (part 3): "'I wonder what we’re having today,' Jane said. 'How about a serving of Charles,' said a sleazy voice. Daria’s head turned and saw a guy with red hair and a fancy suit. She could feel the power radiating off of him, and could tell he was a skilled magic user. She turned to Jane to ask who this guy was when she saw that Jane had a look of pure lust in her eyes. Suddenly Daria’s body was hit by a sharp shock."

  • Life After Highland Ch. 2: 3 of Swords, by LadieT (part 2): "The drive to school was very quiet. After they parked, Quinn watched her older sister walk away and sighed. She was torn - she genuinely liked her aunt, but knew that both her mother and Amy had valid points. What concerned her the most though was Daria's reaction to the conversation."

  • The Mageborn Cynic (IC : Daria and the School of Magic), by peetz5050 (parts 2 and 3): "'May I offer a warm welcome to all of you on this fine Autumn day. As I'm sure you know through diligence and effort this college has achieved a reputation as the premier educational center for the Mageborn on this continent. I expect nothing less than a like application of diligence and effort from each of you as you progress through your courses. Proper education is an opportunity to be seized and built upon. There are books of rules governing conduct in this establishment but I have two rules you must remember: Work hard and don't die'." (Part 3)

  • A Resentful Cynic ch. 2 No Party . No Problem, by ST91 (part 5): "'Come on Daria, don’t be like that. You'll see, you will enjoy yourself.” Said Jane. 'Or at least you’ll have a pleasant evening.' Andrea said with a wink. 'I don’t think I will.' Daria said. 'Why?' Andrea and Jane asked in chorus. 'Quinn is coming.' Daria said, pointing out with her finger the red head girl who approached them very quickly."

  • Star Trek: Daria - Resurrection, by echopapa (part 2): "'She's coming out of the coma, Doctor.' Hm. Bright lights. I guess there is a Heaven, after all...wait. Why would Heaven need a doctor?"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: The Morning After), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "(Daria and Jane are minding their own buisness when Brittany slowly edges up to them sobbing silently) Daria:'...Brittany...(sighs) is everything OK?' Have a Hair-Raising Day!

Look out, everyone, it's Friday the 13th! Don't let any black cats cross your path or walk under any ladders or try to dye your best friend's hair with tiger stripes. You know, the usual bad luck hijinks.

In an interesting Friday the 13th-style turn, a Blogger outage delayed me from posting this for hours. Yet another omen? Hmmm.

As for fanfic, Friday the 13th (the day) appeared as a character in The Angst Guy's A Hard Days' Night, and MFC wrote a fanfic crossover with the movie Friday the 13th, H13: Hell On The 13th.

  • NEW! Commune-ists, by Smileyfax (COMPLETE!): The Morgendorffers were eating their usual family dinner, but there was some tension in the air. Daria, with her keen insight into the family's dynamics, had no idea what had her cockles up, and that worried her. All evening, Helen and Jake had foregone their usual comforts -- Helen, her cell phone/umbilical cord connecting her to Eric, and Jake his newspaper/shield from being responsible or approachable. All evening, the two had been giving each other the occasional furtive glance, and hadn't once asked Daria or Quinn how their day had gone. (FF.net)
  • NEW! Daria/Dorian 6: Christmas Chaos, by LadieT (Part 7): Dorian woke up with a pounding headache. The three hours of sleep mixed with memories of the night before proved to be a stressful combination. He grabbed the Clark Kent frames to look at the clock. Shit it's only 6:30. Dorian surveyed mess that covered the floor. Can't go back to sleep. Might as well get up. He straightened out the bedroom. Daria's side of his brain tried to fight the images of the night before from entering. I have to stay busy... keep focused on anything but Jane. (NEW! FF.net, Spanish version, trans. by MystikaEspiral)
  • NEW! God Save the Esteem, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): The wagon roared down the suburban street, grime and spray paint and rust striking fear into the hearts of all those middle-class. Fiery letters spelled out “MORBIDDORFFERS.” Inside, a man in ripped jeans and a leather jacket with no shirt, adorned with aging badges; safety pins in his ears and spiked green hair. To his side, a young girl in tight black leather everything, garish rips torn open at strategic places, a shock-pink crew cut. Behind him... a girl wearing a skirt and jacket, vegetating on an iPod.
  • Jane Lane: Ace Attorney—Turnabout Teacher's Pet, by LSauchelli (Part 14): “And what kind of game do you think this is? This isn’t just silly art class you take as a hobby, this is the court and let me tell you that our firm is always, always on time. And your suit, what the heck is that? How much did it cost you? Five dollars in Ross? Seriously, lame, Lame. You’re a lawyer, you’re making our firm look bad and—”
  • NEW! That Infernal Nonsense, by Ajar (Act I, Scene V-VII): "Would my character really sing? I mean, previously he could barely carry on a conversation." "Well, you're replacing Josephine as the love interest, and she sings here. We need to convey that you're the love interest." "Shouldn't you let the characters drive the story?" "It's a parody slash fic, it doesn't have to make sense." "You've certainly low standards for your own work."
  • NEW! The Truth Behind... La Femme in Hiding, by Ken T. (COMPLETE!): [An old series of Daria tales comes to light! Enjoy!]
  • The Yellow House Ficlet, by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): “We’re here everyone! Isn’t this exciting Helen?” screamed Jake from the passenger seat of the Lexus. “Jake! Please! We’re right next to you. Besides, you and I have toured the house multiple times.” “I’m sorry dear,” muttered Jake. “Say Quinn, what do you think?”
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Modern Day Daria), by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETE!): Jane almost walked into Daria when the shorter girl stopped just inside the door to the Morgendorffer homestead. Looking over her shoulder, she could see a figure in blue and pink stretched out on the stairs. "Is she, uh," Jane began. "Asleep? Yep." Daria chuckled as she went to the closet under the stairs and began digging around. Looking closely, Jane could see that Quinn Morgendorffer had, indeed, fallen asleep on the stairs. She was face down, with her arms at her sides. And she was drooling.

That Awesome Awful Day Is Back!

It's Friday the 13th, as per a certain Holiday Island story, and this blogger has picked two pictures off the Internet to show what his conception of the ultra-dangerous Holiday Island teen known as Friday the 13th looks like (when she doesn't have her skull face on, that is). I had thought she looked like Neil Gaiman's Death, but Death smiles too much and doesn't look evil, cold, and frightening. See if these two images do it for you. (They've been slightly modified with the author's limited computer-art artistic skills.) Ignore the crosses and so forth, and instead replace them with a gold necklace with a small 13 dangling from it. These two look most like my mind's eye image of Friday the 13th. Not perfect (thicker hair with no highlights, just sheer featureless black), but close enough. Enjoy.

BTW, can you think of a song that would be Daria's theme song?

PPMB
  • Anti-Trope 2, by Pinkminx (Part 2): “I don’t care if you’re trying your best; we need to start winning games.” Ms. Li's eyes narrowed on the school’s football coach, Mr. Gibson. “The P.T.A. is getting suspicious of the distribution of school funds; some are even questioning why the football team is getting new uniforms and equipment.” “Well, the uniforms from last year—” “Are you questioning my distribution of the schools monies?”
  • Daria: Hunter—The Love Triangle, by Jim North (Part 1): "Yes, Daria," Quinn said into her commlink, "I swear I read it! I know you still think of me as an illiterate bubblehead, but come on. I write for a living now.... There's no need to get all snippy, Daria. I'll have you know that some of the articles I write are very long."
  • The New Girl, by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): Daria walked in the corridors of Stanford University, her boots making a resonant sound down the almost empty corridor, while she enjoyed the calm of the early morning hours and thrived on the ambiance of science that seemed to emanate everywhere....
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): Dirty grey clouds of cottony smoke erupted from the rusty grimy steam locomotive as it shuddered to an arthritic stop. Stepping out from the triple canopy forest facing the station were a number of K'eckchi and K'iche Maya who converged on the passenger car and rapidly loaded the baggage on their backs and heads. All were dressed in identical black felt jackets, embroidered with the symbolic red keys and dragon of the modern Avignon Papacy and fringed with blue and white strips of yarn....
  • Two Halves 5: Mall Rat Blues, by Dark Kuno (continued): “So my mom was, like, ‘No more shopping until you bring your grades up young lady’,” complained Quinn as she and the other Fashion Club members strolled down the halls of Lawndale High. “That’s… sooooo unfair,” drawled Tiffany. “I know,” Quinn agreed. “It’s like she expects me to be a brain like Daria and Lex.”
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Tooth and Nail), by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "Hey, Mack, can I carry your books?" "Hey, Mack, can I carry your... pencil?" "Hey, Mack, can I carry your, uh, um... got anything else?"

Back by Unpopular Demand: Friday the 13th

Today is the special day of one of Holiday Island High's least liked teens: Friday the 13th. When I wrote "A Hard Days' Night," I based the appearance of the teen called Friday the 13th ("Frye") on drawings of Neil Gaiman's character Death, from the Sandman comics, with minor changes. It must also be admitted that PPMB poster KatriniaMedina's avatar had my attention here, too.

In the news, there is a movie review of Sex and the City in which the reviewer compares herself to Daria, then does a fine Daria-like job on the movie, slicing it to pieces.

PLUS . . . someone has named a pet rat after Ms. Morgendorffer!

AND . . . a newspaper review of Daria that compares her to the ebola virus! I love it! Woo-hoo!

LATE NEWS: I am reliably informed that today is Blog Like It's The End Of The World Day (BLITEOTW Day, for short). Blog away, then. I have to mow the yard.
