It's Time for Pre-Halloween Festivities!

Young Daria is ready to go for National Trick or Treat Day, and I hope she gets plenty of candy. Or at least, I hope she gets more than Young Quinn does.

If candy isn't your thing, there's always Mischief Night. The Holiday Island version of Halloween will probably be participating, even though it's not technically her holiday. It's probably kind of like her hooligan cousin.

One Of My Favorite Holidays!

Daria and Tom are absolutely doing National Chocolate Day right. Not only are they eating chocolate, but it's chocolate that belongs to someone else! As Jane might say, unauthorized chocolate.

Today is also International Animation Day, which for Daria characters is every day. Except Trent, who is the opposite of animated.

Fanfic Update!
  • Baby Fever, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Quinn and Jim were in the checkout line loading groceries onto the conveyer belt. Behind them was a young brunette woman trying to soothe her crying baby."

  • Come And Knock On Our Door, by ladyevil (part 2): "Jane picked up the phone to see what Daria was up to and heard Trent on the extension. 'Yeah, the sun’ll be setting when the movie lets out.' she heard Trent say."

  • Daria: Dark Goddess (Iron Chef: Daria and the Gang and Halloween), by meesterlee (part 1): "'Jane, could I talk to you?' said Daria. 'Sure,' said Jane. 'Here or over pizza?'"

  • Fizzled Out, by Erin M (part 1): "January came to Lawndale like it usually did, cold and windy. The elevation of the town was too low for snow, but the winds came in like crazy, chilling everyone unlucky enough to be outdoors."

  • Origin Story, by Erin M (COMPLETE!): "I’ve always liked games. There’s a structure to them that appeals to me, with just enough of a random element to keep things from being boring and predictable."

  • Tell Me I'm a Wreck, by conquerlove (fullbrightness) (part 6): "After what feels like a year, I’m finally going in to see Trent and judge the damage for myself. Jane is still at his side, and her jerk of a boyfriend-I mean, mildly irritating boyfriend-goes into the room before I do to gently coax her out."

  • A Visit From The Goon Squad, by Two-Eyed Charlie (part 1): "So that was a bit embarrassing."

Dawn is the New Spice Girl, Pumpkin Spice!

Dawn's ready for National Pumpkin Day...are you? Just for the record, you don't have to turn into a pumpkin to celebrate. I mean, unless you really want to. I'm not here to micromanage.

Today is also the anniversary of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in 1881. It ended in much more bloodshed than the Okay To Cry Corral, but I'm sure it was also far less annoying.

Now Imagine Ruth and Mrs. Barksdale TOGETHER!

I'm going to guess that Mother-In-Law Day isn't one of Helen's favorite holidays, for obvious reasons. Of course, she doesn't have too much room to complain given that Jake's mother-in-law isn't so great, either.

Also on this day in 2000, Wraith posted an essay about "See Jane Run." Check it out if you haven't read it yet!

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (parts 71 and 72): "'Come in.' Ms. Li said when she heard a knock on her office door. 'Oh, good morning Mr. Morgendorffer!' she said smiling when she saw her student." (Part 72)

  • Daria: Cuckoo's Egg, by meesterlee (part 5): "She’d tried. If she hadn’t been able to contact Jackie Handley, she’d managed to her mother. Maybe Jackie would call back, or maybe she wouldn’t. There wasn’t anything to do except wait. At least as far as Quinn was concerned."

  • Triplets Of Terror, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "After they came back from trick-or-treating, the Carbone triplets sat around the kitchen table to take stock of the candy they've received. They'd gone from that to telling scary stories."

"Munch the nutty, nutty?"

Daria says that you are all welcome to celebrate National Nut Day, but if you think she's going to smile for you then you're nuts. Jake will, of course, be indulging in cashews--the CEOs of nuts!

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of Timothy Leary in 1920. I'm not sure where "they" are on replacing him, but I'll have to check with Coyote on that.

Sleep and Write...What a Great Day!

Trent is off to a great start for International Sloth Day, and if he can hold that pose for the rest of the day he'll be just fine. Odds are in his favor. For anyone in doubt about how to celebrate this holiday, follow Mr. DeMartino's advice: "Conserve your energy. Do as little as possible. Pretend you're in class!"

Today is also National Day on Writing, and I'm sure Daria will be writing today (as she does most days). Will she write about sloths? Only if those sloths kill a lot of communists.

Fanfic Update!
  • Come And Knock On Our Door, by ladyevil (part 1): "It was Saturday night at the Zon. 'Hi, we’re Mystic Spiral.' Trent said. 'But we’re thinking of changing the name. We’re gonna do a new song tonight. My friend Daria came up with the lyrics.'"

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (part 69 snd 70): "'Everything ok?' asked Charles when Daniel was back. 'Yes, just a talk with my little sister and her friends.' Daniel answered." (Part 70)

  • Daria: Cuckoos Egg, by meesterlee (parts 2 - 4): "The sedan drove down one of the main streets of the American suburb, paused, then turned right at a cross-street. It was a typical, non-descript American sedan, one with US GSA license plates, a not-uncommon sight closer to Washington, but not so much in Lawndale." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • How To Say Goodbye And Mean It, by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "TV was fine. Mystik Spiral’s concert was fine, in that very loose sense that meant nobody had caught on fire and Cage in a Rage didn’t start a hate-riot."

  • Sarcasm always wins, by EyeMidnight (part 1): "I'm thinking back to our move just a few days ago from Highland, TX to Lawndale, MD. It was a hell of a drive. Mom constantly on the phone, Dad cursing everything, Quinn being a nuisance."

  • Triplets Of Terror, by wilddogjj (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn and Daria are standing next to each other on stage and looking directly at the audience. Quinn: 'Hi, everyone. Before we start the show we feel it's necessary to begin with a little disclaimer.'" (Part 2)

  • Hamster Wheel (Linn's creative thread), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "It was about an hour after dinner, and Rose's orange and white hamster, Butterbean, emerged from her burrow."

Get Out the Shaving Cream!

Poor Mr. O'Neill is, as usual, completely off the mark. See, today is No Beard Day, and of course he picks today to show up with a beard. I mean, aside from Ms. Barch. Come to think of it, I don't think very many Daria characters have beards. I guess Trent's goatee counts, but that's the only main character with facial hair that comes to mind. Perhaps beards are a pain to animate?

Who's the Boss?

Eric is all a-flutter because he just remembered that it's National Boss's Day and he has to make sure that he asked Helen to send him a card. Knowing Helen, she already made Marianne do it.

Today is also World Food Day, so celebrate by eating food at some point today. I know I will!

Fanfic Update!
  • Career Daze, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Mrs. Donnelly is addressing her second grade class. The students include Rachel White, the Sloane Twins (Shane and Lexi), Mike Cucina, Steve Sullivan and the Carbone Triplets (Tommy, Timmy and Teddy)." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (parts 67 and 68): "It started with a click. When Daniel turned the lights off, three observers appeared behind the two-way mirrored wall." (Part 68)

  • Fate For Breakfast, by Two-Eyed Charlie (part 1): "They knew this day would come eventually, and if everything went to plan, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Just big enough of a deal that Lawndale would know Jane Lane and Daria Morgendorffer had long memories and should quake in fear if they ever returned."

  • It's Alternative, by hideousmirror (part 1): "College life was just as dreary as high school was, well at least it was a little more freeing and the classes were more to her liking. But Daria Morgendorffer was just as miserable in Boston as she was in Lawndale."

  • Who Will Survive In America?, by ladyevil (COMPLETE!): "The ride home was dead silent with Daria in the back and her parents up front. 'If you want me to apologize,' Daria said. 'You’ll have to wait a long time.'"

Be Bald and Fed!

Max the wannabe criminale is happy to celebrate Be Bald and Free Day, especially now that Jane has freed him and the rest of the band from the slammer. I'm glad he survived the harrowing experience, aren't you?

Speaking of "Speedtrapped," I hope Jesse still has some of that once-frozen cake, because it's National Dessert Day! Who wouldn't want cake that Jesse's been keeping in his pockets for most of a day? Aside from everyone, that is.

Frustrated Farmers, Unite!

Helen will not be pleased to learn that today isn't Farmer's Day...it's Old Farmer's Day. If Linda finds out about this, then Helen will never hear the end of it.

Today is also Moment of Frustration Day, which would be perfect for Mr. DeMartino except that there's no way he'll be able to limit himself to just one moment. Buckle up, folks.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (parts 64 - 66): "So it all comes down to this. Daniel thought as he sat down in one of the two black chairs placed in front of Ms. Li's desk." (Part 65) (Part 66)

  • Daria: Altar Girl (Iron Chef: Daria and the Gang and Halloween), by meesterlee (COMPLETE!): "Daria arrived at Mrs. Crowley’s house and rang the doorbell. She waited. Mrs. Crowley was wary about callers—and for good reason."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by Daria's Great Adventure (part 41): "The sun had set while they were on the ground in Iceland. Since the plane flew faster than the sun moved across the sky, the party was treated to the sight of the sun rising again in the West where it had recently set."

  • a dorm room (like a hedge maze), by roseisreturning (COMPLETE!): "Like most bad decisions on the Raft campus, Jane and Daria’s starts on a Thursday night."

RETREAT!!!

It's World Mental Health Day, so be sure to take extra good care of yourself today. If you're feeling a little (or a lot) overwhelmed, take my advice and do not go to Quiet Ivy. That place is just awful.

If you know any unhappy drummers, then be sure to give them a nice warm embrace for National Hug a Drummer Day! Just not while they're in the middle of a solo. You could get seriously injured that way.

Mystik Crocodile

I see Jesse has added "G'Day" to his monosyllabic vocabulary, in honor of Crocodile Dundee actor Paul Hogan's birthday. I guess if you can keep Nick and Max from killing each other at every gig, then wrestling crocodiles is no big deal.

Today is also the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. I can't find any records stating whether or not Mrs. Leary's cow knocked a roll of paper towels onto a lit stove burner, but we should really look into it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (part 63): "Sunday flew by. Before Daniel knew it, he and his sister were walking to school."

  • Five Minutes... (T.E. Charlie's "Bargain Bin"), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "'I promised myself I’d never do this 'again.” 'Do what, sweetie?' 'Wake up before noon.'"

  • Mourning in the 'Burbs, by Erin M (COMPLETE!): "A week and a half later, school was back in session. 'Ugh,' said Quinn as she and the Fashion Club headed down the hall toward the girls bathroom. 'This heat is making my lip gloss all runny!'"

  • The Price Of Love, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "We see the whole family (Quinn, Jim, the boys and Daria) eating dinner. Suddenly, the door bell rings. Jim: 'Get the door, Tommy.'"

  • Who Will Survive In America?, by ladyevil (part 8): "'So then Kevin told Mrs. Rand he didn’t do his fucking homework.' Daria was telling Jane at lunch. 'He’s got detention for a week, but we all know Gibson’s going to do something about that.'"

Why is a QB Like a Writing Desk?

I see Kevin is in fine form for Mad Hatter Day (note the 10/6 on the hat), but I think I should point out that mad and dopey are two different things. Still, points for finally taking off those shoulder pads.

Today is also National Coaches Day, so Quinn wants you all to "swim, you cow! Swim!" However, you should feel free to ignore her unless you are, in fact, a cow. Moo.

And Don't Get Me Started on the Pants

I just can't believe Jesse's outfit for National Golf Day. I mean, the guy who hates shirts is wearing not only a shirt, but a sweater vest. Even Max is starting to look cool by comparison.

Speaking of awful things, it was on this day in 2007 that Daria put in an appearance on Drawn Together...but we don't talk about that.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (part 62): "'Oh! Hell Mr. Landon, Mrs. Landon. I'm sorry I didn't notice you.' Daniel said, taken by surprise."

  • Equestria Hurls, by Erin M (part 1): "'This was NOT how I expected to be spending graduation!' Rarity cried as she threw her hands up, generating a large hexagonal crystal shield in front of her. A multicolored streak of light crashed into the shield, dissipating along the facets."

  • Finding Brittany, by meesterlee (parts 1 and 2): "'This world was a bust,' said Tara, gathering their gear together for the translation back to Central." (Part 2)

  • Mourning in the 'Burbs, by Erin M (part 6): "Helen’s face visibly fell for a brief second when she saw Jane and Trent standing on the front step of the Morgendorffer house, but she quickly recovered."

  • A Simple Field Trip, by macross (part 1): "'Ms. Morgendorffer will you please get a move on, and take a seat?' Daria jerked her head back in surprise at the sound of her Principal Ms. Angela Lee. She had been lost in thought and had been standing in the charter bus aisle far too long."

  • Teddy's Muse, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Jamie has just shown up at the house and explained that his daughter, Rachel, has been upset all afternoon. Now, Jamie, Quinn and Jim were in the home office discussing the issue with Teddy."

  • You’ve got the Fizz...You’ve got the POWAH! (T.E. Charlie's "Bargain Bin"), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "The Earth, doing its usual spinning thing, out in the blackness of space. The camera starts to zoom in as THE NARRATOR begins to tell us what the hell, exactly, is going on."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by ladyevil (COMPLETE!): "The next day, Ms. Barch was teaching science. 'OK, students.' She said. 'Let’s talk about chemical composition. If I had two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, what would I have?' No one answered."

Cows AND Cars?

Hey, cow! It's World Farm Animals Day and I just want you to know that I appreciate you! I mean, I appreciate you as burgers, but it still counts, right?

Today is also National Name Your Car Day, so if you have a car and it doesn't have a name, then you know what to do. Just don't use "The Tank"--it's already taken.
