Note to Dragonball Fans: This Holiday Does Not Involve Energy Attacks

Stacy's getting in touch with her inner Hawaiian for King Kamehameha I Day! She looks so content and relaxed and completely unaware that she's committing about half a dozen fashion faux pas!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters" in 2001. No one does the hula in that one, but there is a massive hot dog eating contest so don't try to tell me it's not a party!

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 43): "'Now kids remember, your father and I haven't seen Doug and Susan in a long time and we'd like to make a good impression.'"

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 29): "'I’ll be back for dinner,' Daria said on her way out the door. 'Another date?' her mother queried with a look over the paper that she’d been reading while sitting with her husband in the front room."

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "Having listened to the logs relating to what happened at Tanarexa IV, Nina pondered what had happened there. Something, or someone, was responsible for that anomaly."

Aloha Eep!

Stacy's hula-ing her little heart out for Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian holiday that commemorates Kamehameha the Great. I don't know if that skirt and headpiece is a fashion don't or not, but she seems pretty serene so I'm not going to mess with it.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Does anyone else really want to read the full version of Daria's scholarship essay, the "lighthearted spoof" that calls for the elimination of all money?

I'm Pretty Sure Grass Skirts are a Fashion Don't

Stacy's dancing her heart out in honor of Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian state holiday. If you don't tell Sandi about her glaring fashion faux pas, I won't tell her, either.

This also happens to be the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Care for an imported wasabi gummy-fish, courtesy of Upchuck's new dot-com venture?

Fanfic Update!
  • The Baby Booze (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Jane had a feeling of trepidation as she walked up to the front door of the house. Visiting in the middle of the day at the weekend was a risky thing - hell, visiting any time was risky - but she made a promise, and she was going to keep it."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 11): "She was finally free from home, Lawndale, and the old life. Now she would have Boston, College, and a new life."

  • Daria's Pregnancy, by sparklingdaria (parts 6 and 7): "Quinn woke up feeling happy and went to visit Stacy who just gave birth to twins a couple of days ago." (Part 7)

  • The Death of Grandma Barksdale (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "In a ridiculously opulent bedroom in an even more ridiculously opulent mansion that would have made Louis XIV say, 'This is too much, tone it down!' an old woman by the name of Georgina Veronica Edith Barksdale."

  • God Save The Great And Good (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "He parked the car nearby and both of them got out of the car. Tom looked at the sign near the door. 'The Zon. This is the place,' he said."

  • A Hope of Doubt, by LuxKen27 (COMPLETE!): "Trent stood in the center of the stage and stared out into the cavernous space around them. It was hard to believe that, in a few short hours, Madison Square Garden would be filled to capacity with Mystik Spiral fans, rabid and casual alike."

  • Lyrics, by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Trent made a break from looking at the cracks in the ceiling to return staring at his song notebook. However, the page hadn't changed from last time. It was still blank."

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (parts 2 - 4): "That was it for Mystik Spiral: grunge was their sound. The raw intensity and underground passion was everything they'd been looking for." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • The QB's Cousin, by Matryoshka-Sweetheart (part 1): "When Kevin's parents had told him his cousin Vera was coming to live with them for the foreseeable future, he had to jog his memory (or rather, his mother had to) before the memory of a grey eyed, brown haired girl came up."

  • Quarton, by neonhomer (part 1): "Jane had her back to the argument. She didn't want to get drug into the foray again."

  • Spiraling Out, by Princess-Pasta (parts 1 and 2): "The sweltering summer sun beat down on the top of Trent Lane's head, sending sweat raining down his forehead. With a calloused hand, he brushed strands of black hair away from his face and sighed. It wasn't such a good idea to accept the gig at the park." (Part 2)

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (part 20): "'Huh.' Jane thought for a moment. 'So, if all these worlds are backed up in others, does that mean we're a game or TV show somewhere?'"

Harry Potter Goes Hawaiian

Today is Ka Hae Hawaii day, or Hawaiian Flag Day, and Stacy is hula-ing for all she's worth. Of course, she won't be worth much once Sandi gets done taking her apart for wearing something as unfashionable as grass.

Also, happy birthday to J. K. Rowling, born on this day in 1965. There are a good number of Harry Potter fans in Daria fandom, so it shouldn't be surprising that there are also quite a few fanfic and fanart crossovers:

I have no doubt I'm leaving some out, so please feel free to let me know about any others in the comments.

Aloha, Stacy!

Happy Kamehameha Day! For those unfamiliar with Hawaiian public holidays, Kamehameha Day honors the first king of Hawaii. It's also a great excuse to post the alter ego of Stacy doing the hula.

Today is also the anniversary of the first airing of Prize Fighters in 2001. Care for a wasabi gummi fish? Or how about a mistakenly-ordered bulk hot dog?

Aloha...Eep!

Today is Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian holiday that celebrates Kamehameha I, the first King of Hawaii. Stacy seems to be having fun, but just wait until Sandi catches her wearing that outfit.

Amy also sends this postcard from her vacation in Hawaii: "Dear Sis, you'd love island life. Beautiful sun, wonderful people, umbrella drinks up the kahaualea. Only thing is, you'd have to take a vacation. Oh well, sorry I brought it up. My love to all, Amy."

Litigation Tricksters, Unite!

The American Bar Association, also known as the ABA, turns 132 today. This date is even mentioned in Daria's Sick, Sad Life Planner.

To my surprise, the ABA's journal for August 2010 has a list of "the 25th greatest fictional lawyers who are not Atticus Finch." To my horror, Helen Morgendorffer is not on the list! (See comment #133, however.)

Helen, this day's for you.

Legendary animator Friz Freleng was born 108 years ago today. Hawaii became a state in the USA 51 years ago.

I plan to fill up the blank space with fanfiction later today. Hang around 4 moar.

LATE NOTE: Sorry, that didn't work. Stay tooned for tomorrow's post!

Surf's Up!

Mack Mackenzie reminds us that today is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii. Party it up as you see fit.

A lot of topics are being argued over in PPMB. Some of the most popular threads include these, which you should patronize and enjoy. (PPMB is having a few technical issues itself, but it is mostly stable.)
And there is even more fanfiction on tap.

PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 49: Blessed Be This Meal, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 2): “Daria, when is your last class on Wednesday? Tell me now so I can make sure someone picks you up in time for Thanksgiving.” “About Thanksgiving, Mom. I don’t think I’m going to come down.” The news hit Helen very hard. “Why?”
  • NEW! The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 35): Daria walked downstairs. "I suppose I shouldn't even ask," Daria said. "No ham?" "Daria!" Jake cried. "This is Thanksgiving! It's Turkey Day! We don't eat ham on Turkey Day!" "All right," Daria said. "Mom, did you stock the anti-diarrhea medicine again?" "Daria, I keep trying to tell you, over and over again, that Jake's turkey is fine. You're the only one that seems to have trouble with it. And I know that you eat turkey on other occasions, so you can stop trying to sell that you're allergic to turkey."
  • Hang Time, by Lord Akiyama (Part 2): Jane and Trent Lane slouched as they stood on the curve in front of their home. Both wore sunglasses, primarily to prevent too much sunlight into their eyes. Both were extremely tired and, quite frankly, would rather be asleep at this moment. Instead, they were awake, or about as awake as they could be at this time of day, and waiting. Waiting for their nightmare to truly begin. "Hey, Janey," Trent managed to mumble. "Yeah?" Jane responded in a sleepy voice. "What time is it?"
  • Springtime For Self-Esteem, by Ajar (continued): “We're just here to say we've chosen your proposal for the new self-esteem club.” “Good. Maybe now there won't be such a bias against women in self-esteem education.” “What bias?” “What bias?! How about the bias that a woman's self worth is how much approval they get from a man who will walk out on her after twenty-two years. What bias? When was the last time you saw a man desperately trying to make herself attracted to a man who doesn't appreciate all the sacrifices she made to him.”
  • The Weed of Crime Bears Glitter Fruit, by Kristen Bealer (Part 2): "Welcome to It's a Nutty, Nutty, Nutty World. We're just nuts about nuts. Crunch nuts with your lunch. Buy them by the bunch. Send them to friends far away to munch," recited the teenager behind the counter. His bored tone of voice contrasted sharply with the fake smile plastered on his face. "We want to speak to the person in charge," Kevin demanded. "Is there a manager or whatever here?" The teenager's smile immediately vanished as he gestured toward the back room behind the counter. "In there." Kevin and 99 burst through the door to see a thin man with blond hair and an earnest expression, holding a clipboard as he inventoried the nuts. "Hey! No unauthorized personnel behind the counter!" As the agents pulled guns from their holsters, beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. "Please!" he begged. "Take what you want, but please leave the pistachios; we're down to our last bag!" "Drop the act," Kevin ordered. "We know this place is a KAOS front, and we're here to shut it down!" (Daria/Get Smart)
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Sincerest Form of Flattery), by Roentgen (fragment): In 2002, a film was uncovered from the Crotobaltislavonian State Archives. Called "Esteemed Too Dearly," it appeared to be some sort of teen comedy film financed by the Crotobaltislavonian Council for the Filmic Arts. However, due to the collapse of the Crotobaltislavonian unit of currency—the pem—sometime in 2002, the movie was never released...

It's Kind of Complicated

Welcome to May Day, the spring festival day that celebrates pretty much everything. In the U.S. this is also Law Day (with a nod to Helen Morgendorffer), Loyalty Day (with a nod to Ms. Angela Li), Join Hands Day (fraternal groups helping society), Lei Day (Hawaii only, not in Bermuda as Sandi Griffin thinks), and In the Heart of the Beast (Minneapolis giant puppet show).

Worldwide it is also Beltane (or Samhain across the uninhabited southern zones of the planet), International Workers' Day (what it sounds like), EuroMayDay (like May Day, except not), the founding day of the Illuminati, the optional feast day of St. Joseph (patron saint of workers and fathers), the 203rd anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire, the 170th anniversary of the first adhesive postal stamp (YES!), and the 158th birthday anniversary of Calamity Jane (who is mentioned here only because her name was Jane, like Jane Lane, who was far more interesting).

It is also the day when, 18 years ago, Rodney King made his famous appeal for calm during the 1992 riots in Los Angeles. Whatever other faults he may have, Mr. King did a great thing at that moment, and it is worth reflecting on that. Thank you, Mr. King.

AND... because it is the first Saturday in May, it is Derby Day (what is likely to be a very muddy Run for the Roses) and more importantly Free Comic Book Day! Get yer butt down to your local comic book store and get one while supplies last!

Whew. Go thou and party.

  • NEW! The Fate of the Duels, by A440 (Part 2): Once safe in room 403 on the fourth level of the motel, Brittany looked over the interior, which was white and pink plaster with a clean white deep carpet, a decent bed with red sheets, a high-def TV on the wall, and a equally clean red-tiled bathroom with a pull-up window shade over the toilet. From there, the blonde turned on the TV and tuned to ABC Nightline, then unwrapped her bundle, revealing two five-foot-long katana-type samurai swords in their sheaths, gold armor on the swords, and a black pearl finish on the scabbards; those she carefully placed in the closet.
  • NEW! Flight, by Bear-Bell (Parts 1 and 2): Trent wondered what had happened. He wasn't exactly content with his lot in life, and he'd always had a generally negative outlook of the world, but this feeling of dissatisfaction had never been so acutely understood before. Janie's gone, he immediately thought. What was he supposed to do without her?
  • NEW! Kid Sister, by Cacophonysundae (COMPLETE!): "Sorry, Janie," he tells her. "Monique and I broke up again." "I heard." Janie doesn't bother to hide the scorn in her voice. She's pretty cool for a kid sister, but sometimes she gets into these moods where she thinks she has to be the mom and he hates it because she's good at it, and she always makes him feel like he's some unruly kid that needs to be scolded.
  • NEW! One Night, by Charliefox2012 (COMPLETE!): I sigh inwardly, still drinking my soda. Really, it's just to be doing something. I know I should let it go, just move on. I mean, she has. It's like nothing ever happened, and that bothers the hell out of me. Nevertheless, I can't complain if I want to keep her by my side. I was stupid. I am stupid. I should have refused her. So she kissed me; I should have stopped her there. I didn't want to though. I wanted it. [Revised from original version on PPMB from 2009.]
PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 44: My Three Young Women, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4): “Dammit, Jane, sometimes I think you want me to cheat on you.” “Excuse me?” “All this talk about being around other girls, who, by the way, I haven’t even kissed them. I’m just around them. How would you feel if I came to all those gigs you take Trent to and point a shotgun in the face of every guy who flirts with you?” “They don’t flirt with me. Which is more than I can say for you.” [NOW COMPLETE! Last part here: “Finn, I’m a perfect lady. Nothing happened. Besides, I know you have a girlfriend.” “Well, that does make me feel a little better. At least I didn’t cheat on Jane.” “Well, not a perfect lady. I did manage to sneak a few peeks.” “Eep!” “You don’t need to get so mad. For what it’s worth, I was impressed.” “You’re not helping.”]
  • NEW! The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 26): "I cannot believe this!" said Helen. It was six o'clock in the morning. Helen, Jake and Quinn were holding an impromptu discipline session. Quinn thought that she would be able to sneak in unnoticed, but when her room was checked at 5:30 am, she was immediately woken up and called down stairs to face her punishment. The smell of Quinn's breath would guarantee a contentious session. "So I'm going to ask you again, Quinn: where did you get the alcohol?" (FF.net)
  • NEWESTER! A Health Unto Our Heroine! by Gwrtheyrn (COMPLETE!): [A songfic you simply have to sing!]
  • NEW! It Ends Tonight, by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): It was on one of the western cliffs that the crowd decided to have its final parties. In particular, Miss Jennifer Burns sat on the cliff’s edge and watched the sun burn. “Yo! Burnout!” yelled her friend Angel, “You know what they say about staring at the sun. Don’t wanna go blind, do you?” “Like it matters,” yelled Jennifer back, “It’ll all be over soon enough. Besides, I’m wearing sunglasses. Hey Scarlett! Any word from Andrea?”
  • NEW! True Art Is Angsty, by Yogi (COMPLETE!): Daria scowled at the words on the page: “Once upon a time.” ALL Fairy Tales began with that. It was so obvious, so overused, it was almost like the words lost meaning and were just what people began fairy tales with. Sure SOME people would be satisfied with that, but Daria was EIGHT. Her first story could begin with something more highbrow than THAT. (Daria/Princess Tutu)
SFMB
  • Daria Race War, by Bliss Ticks (continued): Kevin took his dad’s truck to what he thought was the seediest section of Lawndale. Although it was closely monitored by the police, there was a liquor store here and several of the homes were for sale or had weeds growing semi-unchecked on their lawns. He had it all figured out: he would go down to the slums, buy some drugs, plant them on Mag, then report him to Ms. Li. It was foolproof. All he had to do was find a dealer.

Lucky Strikes Out

Nine years ago this very day, "Lucky Strike" premiered, closing in on the end of season five. A previous post offered some interesting information about this episode, see what you think of it. Wish we knew who the two black teachers were. They sort of magically appeared in this episode, then were never seen again. And the coach never got a speaking part. Alas.

Marianne, the legal assistant in Helen Morgendorffer's office, has a special day today (but no benefits thereof): it's Legal Assistants Day! Now she can shut up and get back to work, there's a deadline.

Today is also Purple Day (commemorating those with epilepsy), Prince Kuhio Day in Hawaii, and the birthday anniversary of poet Robert Frost and Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy. By some accounts it is also Opposite Day, but you figure out what to do for that one. It might not be Opposite Day. Or maybe it is.

The Awesome Kem has drawn Kevin as Inspector Gadget, Brittany as his sidekick, and their dog as their dog. Dig it!

PPMB
  • NEW! Apocalyptic Daria: Timeline, by Doggieboy (Part 3): In Kentucky, Major General Bartholomew J. Simpson and his wife are driving south on Interstate 65 after leaving Standford Louisville International Airport. That is when they hear the first reports of Washington and Pittsburgh being bombed.
  • NEW! Cynic and Violence, by Peapotmaster (Part 2): "The planet is called Lawndale." "What kind of idiot names their planet Lawndale?" "Nerdy fan fiction writers who have nothing to do."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 39: That S-E-X Word, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): Finn smiled. “You know I never asked, how did your date go last Saturday with Kelly?” “Fan-tastic,” Jeffy cheered. “How fantastic?” Joey, who was already starting to dress, joined in. “We went to the movie, then to the café. She was enjoying herself the whole way, and I was piling on that Mercer charm. Then we got back to her place, she invited me in, and, well...I scored! Woo!” Jeffy thrust his hips in celebration. Please point that in another direction, Finn thought to himself. [NEW! Part 2 here: Finn hung up the phone. Now he was even more depressed about the whole sex issue. Here was Daria, antisocial and a total misfit, now getting chewed out for having sex. With Tom. Finn’s best friend. Finn wasn’t sure whether to be angry or ashamed. Now even his own sister was having sex before he was. What did that make him? Nervous? Timid? Not interested in girls?]
  • NEW! General Semantics, Private Angst, by Gwrtheyrn (Part 20): She reconstructed it in this way: Mackenzie's orders were to kill Amanda Lane, and 'X,' and maybe Jane as well, but to leave "Enro's favourite cousin" strictly alone. She'd prevented him from carrying those instructions out. But, had Mackenzie deliberately been complicit in his wife's murder? Had that whole gruesome tableau been served up just to convince Daria of his bona fides?
  • NEW! Last Man Standing, by Project Pegasus (COMPLETE!): "So, ummm... I'm reading a book and... it's about John Milton and..." "Woah woah woah. This is your first self-insert, and you chose to blow it like this? You could have at least done something halfway interesting with your first self-insert like go to the Adult Entertainment Expo or something." "But... I thought we could... I dunno, have a fun adventure together. Like, we could do so many Jägermeister shots together that you become too drunk to make it back to your place so you have to stay at my place. When we get there, you come on to me in your drunken stupor but I gently rebuff your advances, informing you that I want you, but not like this and..." "Yeah, that's not happening."
  • Nobody Puts Quinn in a Corner! by Shull Bitter (Part 1): "I don't really think you'd fit in at Hampshire College. It's Shaggy." Quinn wrinkled her forehead, not ugly though, but cute like a puppy. "What's Shaggy?" "You know, from Scooby Doo? There's a legend about the characters on that show being based on Hampshire College and the schools around it. And Hampshire is Shaggy." "Ooooooh." A pause. "What school is Daphne?"

Aloha from the Fashion Club!

Stacy Rowe shakes her fashionable grass skirt in celebration of Hawaii's 50th anniversary of statehood today.

Today is also the 36th birthday of computer wizard Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google (which operates Blogger.com, which makes this blog possible: thank you!).

It is a special day in animation history as well, being the 103rd birthday anniversary of Warner Brothers animator Friz Freleng, who invented so many WB cartoon characters I can't even list them all here. Daria probably knows most of them on a first-name basis. Would Daria be as sarcastic as she is without Bugs Bunny's snarky comments?

The American Bar Association, which maintains a code of ethics for lawyers in the United States, was formed today 131 years ago. This concept must make Jim Vitale laugh loud and long.

A news item from online, by way of the Jackson Free Press (Jackson, Miss.), is "Movie Review, Sort of" about IIFY? and MTV in general.

Richard Lobinske is trolling for Halloween costume ideas for a story he's writing in the John Lane series. Go help him out and make yourself famous.

Moar on the way.

Aloha, Yo!

Today is Kamehameha Day, honoring King Kamehameha of Hawaii. Do something to celebrate the occasion! I don't know, just do something, roast a pig or eat pineapple, watch Is It Fall Yet? Go wild!

More soon. It's soon!

The courageous Disco316 has taken up the unenviable task of finding and listing all NC-17 Daria stories (Dariarotica). His list is on SFMB somewhere. If you can't find it, you're not supposed to find it. Some works are borderline but fit more into the conventional listing (e.g., "Embers" and "Love Is a Series of Burning Sensations," both by Undefinedlust, which is what I said in the first place). If you have an opinion on what constitutes Dariarotica, particularly which works should be in which list, post your thoughts here.

Aloha!

Stacy Rowe reminds everyone that today is Kamhameha Day in Hawaii, so have a luau and party down. Amy Barksdale has been to Hawaii, which we know from her snarky postcard to sister Helen in "Through a Lens Darkly." There do not seem to be any fanfics in which Daria and/or Jane go to Hawaii and have their adventures there laid out in detail; other people go there, but not them. Maybe someone could do a story about Amy's CIA adventures on the Big Island or something.

  • Avenging, by Lorenzo Sauchelli (Parts 6 and 7): Sick Sad World News interviews Captain Dar—um, America. Links to pics also provided!
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): No description from me needed. Just read it. It's the best.
  • NEW!!! Swan Song, by NightGoblyn (Part 1): An eighth-grader from hell (literally, perhaps) has come to Lawndale. Her first target is . . .

Daria's Magnum Look, Courtesy of Tom . . . Tom Selleck, That Is

The title sounds like a pun on something from Zoolander, but it's not quite that bad. One segment of Daria's dream in "Murder, She Snored" spoofed the 1980s TV series Magnum, P.I., which starred Tom Selleck as a Hawaiian private eye. (Tom is on the right.) Tom Selleck was famed for wearing brilliantly colored shirts on the show, and in the MPI segment Daria wears one, too.

What's funny, at least to me, is that Daria (in a cleaned-up screen-cap at left) looks pretty good in a bright Hawaiian shirt, with a white tee underneath, of course. Not the first thing I would have thought of for an alternative look on her.

Daria if living in Hawaii or the West Coast? Daria on spring break from college? You decide. And do some more fan art of Daria in some different clothing, we could use a break from that green jacket.

[Oops, I was going to post this yesterday but fell asleep instead. Here it is anyway, a day late. I'll add some more to it, then.]

In other news, Richard Lobinske, Brother Grimace, Roentgen, Ranchoth, and others continue to expand the ever-expanding expanse of the expansive envelope of DariaWiki. Richard added a new category that will be of good use: Canon Media. All the publications and mass media from the show can be listed here, though SSW is missing. Hmmm. Maybe "media" is print media only.

CINCGREEN has begun a new series on his blog, examining the "storytelling engine" of Daria. Excellent reading of the cerebral kind, what this fandom needs. (I'm not particularly good at doing this myself, so I love seeing it.)

Got a bunch of useless Daria screen captures and other images laying around on your hard drive, doing nothing? Upload them to the Images section of the Daria Fan Club.

Reese Kaine reminds us that the Daria Sounds Archive is still alive and well, with some of the funniest things NOT heard on TV. Check it out. The question-and-answer stuff is hysterical.

On PPMB, Wouter has posted a picture showing Daria as normally seen and Daria in his manga style. Nice work.

More "Computer Freebies" added at left, near the bottom: wallpaper, icons, etc.

Last, but hardly least, a new T-shirt that has appeared on the market . . . oh, my.
