Anyone For a Luau?

Stacy is dancing the hula in honor of King Kamehameha I Day, a Hawaiian holiday that honors the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii. I'm sure Aunt Amy would love to celebrate by going back to Hawaii for another vacation, but only if she can rub Helen's nose in it again.

I hope that the various Lawndale teens at least try to be nice to their younger siblings because it's also National Children’s Day! Then again, I'm not sure that bratty children like the Griffin boys and Brian Taylor are worth celebrating. Maybe Daria had a point about not liking kids, if those are any example of what the Lawndale children are like.

The episode "Prize Fighters" first aired on this day in 2001, and the competition was fierce! No, not the drama over Jodie, Upchuck, and Daria all fighting for the same scholarship. I mean the hot dog eating competition at the end. Mr. DeMartino was clearly in it to win it.

Giddy-up, Helen!

Hey all you horse-racing fans! Today's the day of the Belmont Stakes, and Helen and Jake look like they're in it to win it. At least, I hope that's what they're doing. If not, please don't tell me.

Speaking of competition, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Not only did Daria, Jodie, and Upchuck have to compete for a scholarship, but Lawndale High held a hot dog eating contest. Will the conflicts never cease?

Note to Dragonball Fans: This Holiday Does Not Involve Energy Attacks

Stacy's getting in touch with her inner Hawaiian for King Kamehameha I Day! She looks so content and relaxed and completely unaware that she's committing about half a dozen fashion faux pas!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters" in 2001. No one does the hula in that one, but there is a massive hot dog eating contest so don't try to tell me it's not a party!

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 43): "'Now kids remember, your father and I haven't seen Doug and Susan in a long time and we'd like to make a good impression.'"

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 29): "'I’ll be back for dinner,' Daria said on her way out the door. 'Another date?' her mother queried with a look over the paper that she’d been reading while sitting with her husband in the front room."

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "Having listened to the logs relating to what happened at Tanarexa IV, Nina pondered what had happened there. Something, or someone, was responsible for that anomaly."

Aloha Eep!

Stacy's hula-ing her little heart out for Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian holiday that commemorates Kamehameha the Great. I don't know if that skirt and headpiece is a fashion don't or not, but she seems pretty serene so I'm not going to mess with it.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Does anyone else really want to read the full version of Daria's scholarship essay, the "lighthearted spoof" that calls for the elimination of all money?

Aloha! I Mean, If That's Okay With You, Sandi

Stacy's got the moves for Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian state holiday, but I think Sandi might have a few words for her on the subject of her fashion choices. Then again, after Stacy's turnabout at the magic show, she might keep her mouth shut on this one.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Daria, Jodie, and Upchuck compete for a scholarship while Jake finds a few hundred new ways to prepare hot dogs. Care for a wasabi gummy-fish imported from Tokyo?

I'm Pretty Sure Grass Skirts are a Fashion Don't

Stacy's dancing her heart out in honor of Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian state holiday. If you don't tell Sandi about her glaring fashion faux pas, I won't tell her, either.

This also happens to be the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Care for an imported wasabi gummy-fish, courtesy of Upchuck's new dot-com venture?

Visiting in the middle of the day at the weekend was a risky thing - hell, visiting any time was risky - but she made a promise, and she was going to keep it."

  • Spiraling Out, by Princess-Pasta (parts 1 and 2): "The sweltering summer sun beat down on the top of Trent Lane's head, sending sweat raining down his forehead. With a calloused hand, he brushed strands of black hair away from his face and sighed. It wasn't such a good idea to accept the gig at the park." (Part 2)

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (part 20): "'Huh.' Jane thought for a moment. 'So, if all these worlds are backed up in others, does that mean we're a game or TV show somewhere?'"

Aloha, Stacy!

Happy Kamehameha Day! For those unfamiliar with Hawaiian public holidays, Kamehameha Day honors the first king of Hawaii. It's also a great excuse to post the alter ego of Stacy doing the hula.

Today is also the anniversary of the first airing of Prize Fighters in 2001. Care for a wasabi gummi fish? Or how about a mistakenly-ordered bulk hot dog?

Are two Heads better than one?

Another marvelous freaky moment in the series, if you were paying attention. It's the end of "Prize Fighters," and Jake Morgendorffer is sponsoring a hot dog eating contest to advertise his business. Lots of kids walk up to watch the fun.

Among them is The Head, walking in from the left side of this image. He's coming up behind Bob.

Also walking over is The Head, coming in from the bottom of the screen on the left side.

What the hell is going on here? This school has more mutants than Xavier's Academy. Does this have anything to do with the time The Head's glasses turned black, or when he appeared on a milk carton as a missing kid? Does Shaggy (over on the right side, orange shirt) have anything to do with this?

"Prize Fighters" Revisited, AU Style

In an alternate Dariaverse, fifty-eight years ago today, Horace Sloane donated lands surrounding the town of Lawnburg to the state, to create the Horace Sloane State Forest. As a consequence, Lawndale was never formed. You can see the cascade of events thereafter in MMan's most excellent AU fanfic, "Anywhere But Here." Congratulations, MMan!

In our reality, seven years ago today, MTV broadcast the third-to-last regular Daria episode, "Prize Fighters." This episode is consistently rated by fans as one of the least liked productions in the series (e.g., TV.com, Sick Sad World, Daria by Numbers). Thumbnail outlines of the plot are available (Answers.com, Outpost Daria), as is a complete script (Outpost Daria). Perhaps someone could flesh out the DariaWiki page for this episode. Looks a little thin.

How could this episode have been improved? Rather than ask for an Iron Chef with AU versions of this tale, let's talk it out in the Comments. How would you have written "Prize Fighters"? What would you have done differently? What would you have hoped to see?

Me, I think one of the three could have won the prize, which would have made it interesting. I'd like to have seen Upchuck win here, as his slimy persona would have fit perfectly with the slimy persona of Wizard, Inc. Plus, it would have thrown Upchuck into an entirely new light, and he badly needed a character revamp. He could have shocked everyone and been a winner!

I also think Daria and Jane's argument sounded a bit lame and should have been made clearer or dropped. Jane could have been given a lot more depth here, as far as her resentment of Daria's attempts to get the scholarship. And Daria just seems to cave in to everyone's expectations and violate her own principles. She could have smelled the coffee and gotten motivated on her own, without telling anyone; the failure would then have been painful, when it was sort of a big nothing here in the series.

Your turn. Have at it.

Meet Heather

Buckskin-clad Heather No-Last-Name from "College Bored" is interesting for a number of reasons. She is one of the few characters shown smoking in the series. Her level of cynicism not only matches Daria's but threatens to outdo it. In a way she comes across as a possible future Daria, complaining about the realities of college life and even watching Sick, Sad World on TV. Heather gets other people to write her college papers, but Daria is perfectly willing to "fix" the papers, so neither has the moral upper hand.

The similarities have limits, of course: Daria, a sophomore in high school, is vastly more intelligent and competent than Heather, and she displays a real mercenary streak in rewriting and evaluating papers. The college students who flock to her come across as morons. Still, Heather gives Daria forewarning of the problems inherent in college life, information Daria doubtless files away for future reference.

Heather will certainly remember Daria in a favorable way should they meet each other later in life. The circumstances under which they meet are anyone's guess, more fodder for fanfic writers. Heather might need another favor from that smart girl, or Daria might need a favor from her. In any event, Heather has rarely been seen in fanfic to this point, though she does appear in TLAS.

As a side note, the trip to Middleton was the first time the issue of college was addressed in the series. It returns in "Prize Fighters" and (of course) Is It College Yet? but also shows up in subtler ways. The lyrics to "College Try," Splendora's theme music for IICY?, are written from Daria's viewpoint and reveal a Daria very similar to the one in high school, and in a similar state of self-isolation and stress ("Guess I'm majoring in angst," the lyrics go). And there's the "interview" conducted with Daria on the CBS Early Show in 2002, in which she was asked, "Once you're in college, do you think that you'll find the happiness that has eluded you for, really, all your life?" Daria frowned and replied, "Why do people assume I'm unhappy just because I mope around all the time, saying snide things in a deadpan voice? I find that very judgmental. But in answer to your question: God, I hope so." It is telling that in IICY?, even Quinn has a more optimistic view of college than does Daria, and she tries to cheer up her sister about her college future, saying "You're gonna have friends and everything. I know it sounds hard to believe."

If only there had been another show with Daria at Raft . . . alas.
