Be Sure to Come Up for Air!

Daria has become a very unwilling participant in National Hugging Day, but she should consider herself lucky. Better to be hugged by your parents than by Mr. O'Neill...especially if he's wearing a lion costume.

Jake might end the hug early, though, if he notices any fluffy-tailed rats lurking near the garbage cans. It doesn't matter that it's Squirrel Appreciation Day; the only squirrel Jake appreciates is a successfully rehomed squirrel.

Happy--or rather, bittersweet--anniversary to the movie Is It College Yet?, which aired on this day in 2002. It marked the end of the Daria series as a whole, but was a fitting way to finish the show.

Is It Squirrels Yet?

Give plenty of love to those rats with fluffy tails because it's Squirrel Appreciation Day and you don't want those adorable little hooligans knocking over your trash cans. Jake will definitely take a pass, unless he can appreciate the squirrels by trapping them and dropping them off somewhere far away.

This is also the twentieth anniversary Is It College Yet?, which means the twentieth anniversary of the end of the show itself. It's been a wild twenty years for fandom, and here's to many more to come!

Don't Try to Hug a Squirrel, Though. Trust Me on This.

Daria, Helen, and Jake are all sharing a rare tender family moment on National Hugging Day, but Quinn's going to sit this one out. She doesn't want to wrinkle her outfit and she's got a big date tonight! Be careful whom you hug today, too. Not only is there a pandemic going on (in case you haven't heard), but Mr. O'Neill can tell you that some hugs end in lawsuits.

Today is also Squirrel Appreciation Day, so go find a fluffy-tailed rat and tell it how much you care. Better bring some nuts, though. Squirrels aren't big on words.

Finally, it was on this day in 2002 that Is It College Yet? aired, ending the show and sending Daria and Jane off to Boston. We may not have gotten to find out what happened to them next (unless you count the alter egos at the end), but the fanfic will keep us going for years to come!

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 27): "'Why do I have to be at this thing?' Hanley asked as he, Trent and Jesse walked through the woods."

  • Bobbie Caller, by Meester_Lee (part 6): "The media descended on Lawndale High School on Tuesday. Bobbie had gotten a ride with Aunt Callie and saw them from over a block away before she heard them: some sort of media circus was clustered around the school’s main entrance."

  • Daria: Well, It Is Friday (Iron Chef: Daria has a huge crush on Brittany.), by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "For most people, Friday was the end of the work-week and when most of them could kick back, relax, and have fun for a couple of days. That wasn’t the case for one Daria Morgendorffer, aka Cynic, one of the Wards attached to Baltimore’s Parahuman Response Team."

  • Did I Really Just Do That? (Creative Writing - My class submissions), by neonhomer (part 1): "My name is Matthew Mathiesen, and I hate school."

  • Quinns Of The Past (Life Goes On), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn was on her computer. She has a very annoyed expression on her face when Jim comes in." (Part 2)

Also Known as "Rats With Fluffy Tails Appreciation Day"

It's National Squirrel Appreciation Day, but something tells me Jake won't be celebrating. I admit I find the little critters kind of cute, but then I've never done battle with them over a garbage can.

Today is also National Hugging Day, but Daria wants to make sure everyone knows that she prefers National Touch-Me-and-Get-Sued Day.

Last but certainly not least, it was on this day in 2002 that "Is It College Yet?" aired. It marked the end of the Daria series with a funny yet bittersweet conclusion, and even years later we can still appreciate Daria's parting words: "Stand firm for what you believe in, until and unless logic and experience prove you wrong; remember, when the emperor looks naked, the emperor is naked; the truth and a lie are not 'sort of the same thing;' and there's no aspect, no facet, no moment of life that can't be improved with pizza."

Group Hug!

Daria is reluctantly accepting a gesture of parental affection, but only because it's National Hugging Day. Mr. O'Neill, stay back and keep your arms where we can see them unless you want that lawsuit.

You could also hug some squirrels, because it's Squirrel Appreciation Day! Jake will be hugging them. Hugging them very tightly, right around their little rodent necks, gah dammit!

Last, but of course not least, today is the anniversary of the final chapter in the Daria story, Is It College Yet?, in 2002. The final movie had a surprisingly upbeat ending, even if Daria still regrets not bludgeoning Ms. Li with that trophy. Cheer up, Daria; there's always the reunion!

Fanfic Update!
  • An Annoying Paradise - Daria, by Resop (part 4): "Daria walks into the music room expecting to see Sachiko-sensei but sees a different woman instead. 'Asamura Daria?' 'That's me.'"

  • Creak, by Jim North (part 10): "More than gone. It hadn't been patched up. The rest of the floor hadn't disappeared, turning the entire kitchen into one giant vacancy with all of its contents spilled into the basement. The hole was simply gone as if it had never been there, the scratched and scuffed hardwood back in its original configuration as if the entire event had been a video rewound to its beginning."

  • Dr. Sloane's Wonderful Androids, by Szcz (part 1): "Jodie Landon opened the front door and saw Daria, holding a Browning High Power. 'Jodie, you must know one important thing.', Daria said it and shot at Jodie's heart."

  • God Save The Esteem: Punk is Dead, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Jake had asked for a Viking burial at sea but getting the corpse to the bay was impractical, so the mourners had rented a large paddling pool and set the burning coffin on that."

  • Skeletons, by CaffeineAddict94 (parts 3 and 4): "Daria had driven past the house many times but actually entering it was a struggle." (Part 4)

  • A Three Hour Tour, by Jim North (part 4): "'I have to say I was not expecting this at all,' he remarked ten seconds later. 'Yes, that's right, ladies and gentlemen,' came the loud, nasal voice from the docking stairs. 'It's everybody's favorite red-headed superstar!'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes that should be: Pacific Rimmers), by Szcz (part 1): "Lawndale was a heart of the middle coastal region, the place of the important trade routes to the internal countries. The cruel family of Sloanes held the control over the region from their stone manor near the Bay."

Daria Doesn't Appreciate the Pervert Ones Who Stare at Her, Though

Those rats with fluffy tails want to remind everyone that today is Squirrel Appreciation Day, and that peanut butter is always welcome as a gift. I have no doubt Jake will be appreciating the little guys with extreme prejudice.

Today is also the anniversary of the original airing of Is It College Yet? in 2002, which also marked the end of the Daria series as a whole. "It's like the end of an era!"

Umm...Lawsuit?

Daria has just surprised Jane with a sudden observance of National Hug Day. That's today, so I'd recommend everyone keep their distance from Mr. O'Neill. Of course, that's good advice for every other day, too.

Today is also Squirrel Appreciation Day, so if you see Jake wearing a squirrel skin cap on his head and doing a victory jig...then you know that he missed the point. Oh, well.

Last but not least, it was on this day in 2002 that Is It College Yet? aired on MTV. It was the very last canon view we got to see of Daria and all the others, but the characters still live on in fanfic.

The written and visual nominations for the Daria Fanworks Awards are now up. Get out there and vote!

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (parts 7 - 9): "'Sis, can I ask you a personal question?' Daria sighed. 'You're going to anyway.' Quinn gave her that knowing look again. 'How's Trent?'" (Part 8) (Part 9)

  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (parts 56 and 57): "Karis Chapman turned her filmy-white eyes skywards to see the stars as she freely walked Fielding's grounds." (Part 57)

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 5): "'You go run the register,' Bob said, shaking his head. 'You started it, you get to deal with it. I'll finish stocking the cooler, then you can go home.' 'It's gonna get weird, isn't it?'"

  • Great Professor Dario Ch. 1 A fresh start, by ST91 (part 6): "11:30 a.m... Good ... I can sleep a little more. Jane thought as she replaced the alarm on the nightstand. 'Just five more minutes and then I'll get up.' she said to herself."

  • Life in the Past Lane - Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Jane Lane became a fan of Retro Dudes..."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (parts 7 and 8): "'Hello, Quinn.' 'Eeeek!' Quinn jumped. There was Daria, sitting on the edge of the bed." (Part 8)

  • Northbank Diaries #1: A Tale Of Three Suburbs, by ognawk (part 5): "Jane was sat in Mr DeMartino's history class, sketching away on a piece of paper. Sketching in class wasn't a new thing to her, she did it regularly. Normally, she'd be able to pay attention to the teacher and sketch at the same time, but her mind was miles away, wondering exactly what was going to happen to her."

  • Psycho Therapy--the Facebook Edition (Iron Chef: Facebook episodes), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer added sleeping upside-down and spreading rabies to her interests."

  • Quinn's Code 09: Morgendorffers in the Woods, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Quinn's Tale 'In a time not so long ago, there lived this girl...'"

  • Target Down (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Tom was making his way out of the house. He checked he had his keys, wallet and phone on him before he left the house. As he closed the door and made his way to his car, his phone started ringing."

  • Transitions (Scenes that should be: Pacific Rimmers), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Kids,' Kay said to both her children, 'I know it's nerve-wracking having to go to a new school in a new town...'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "Jake eyed her hungrily. 'Why'd the chicken cross the road?' 'I don't know,' Helen countered in a similar tone. 'Well, you're about to find out.......'"

  • What is Fashion?, by Smijey (part 5): "She was loath to continue the conversation of her own volition, but geek as he may be, Ted might finally be able to solve the riddle. 'So, uh, Ted...what is fashion?'"

"Lawsuit!"

Hey, everybody! It's National Hug Day! Now get out there and hug someone.

Err...on second thought, maybe not.

Today is also Squirrel Appreciation Day, although something tells me Jake will not be celebrating. Damn rats with fluffy tails!

Last--but not least--today is the tenth anniversary of the premiere of Is It College Yet? It was the end of the series, but with it came a lot of closure and even a happy ending (if you aren't Tom, anyway). So if you have it, pop in the DVD and be glad that at least one of the Daria movies does not feature Mr. O'Neill shaking his ass in the opening credits.

All You Need Is Hug

Yes, today is National Hug Day in the USA and anywhere else that honors the idea. If you know someone who needs or wants a hug, give them one (unless doing so would lead to legal action against you, of course).

"Prize Fighters" debuted on MTV during Daria's fifth season 10 years ago tonight. College becomes the big issue in the second out of three such episodes.

This is an important day in a certain well-known Daria fanfic, a day that sets Lawndale off on a very different course than was shown on the show. Can you guess which fanfic that was?

Saturday, March 27, 2010

It's Viagra Day! Go, Upchuck!

Yes, it's been a loooong twelve years since Viagra was turned loose upon the world, and that merits mention here only because of Upchuck, who probably doesn't need it. (A recent fanfic making use of Viagra appears here.)

This is National Joe Day, but there are no Joes in Daria, except for this one, who was in this story.

The namesake of a certain well-known Daria fan & writer was born this day 165 years ago. It also seems today is when you should mark the festivities of Earth Hour, which means to just shut off any electricity you don't need.

DariaWiki chugs along at a great pace with many new pages, helped along by the likes of Brother Grimace, CR85747, Richard Lobinske, Doggieboy, Disco316, Kara Wild, JPAGC, Quiverwing, Roentgen, Darkkuno, Jim North, Ticknart, and Boandpop (vlora). Thank you, one and all!

ART UPDATE! Richard Lobinske has updated the art listing for 2010! Great stuff out there!

PPMB
  • NEW! collar, by Jim North (COMPLETE!): Stacy trailed off and put a hand over her mouth. "I'm sorry, this may be going a little too fast. Can we just skip it for toni—" "No," Sandi suddenly said, standing up straight and crossing her arms. "She wanted to know everything about our lifestyle, so we should tell her." "Sandi, I—" "It's the punishment stool," Sandi continued with lethal calm. "Whenever Stacy does something bad, I put the stool in the middle of the living room and she has to sit on it until I think she's learned her lesson." [NEW! Ending is here: "Welcome back." Quinn lifted her face to see Stacy sitting on the steps beside her. The other woman was still in her collar and bedclothes, and she was staring up at the predawn sky. Quinn tried to speak, found her throat to be stuffed up with phlegm, and had to stop and clear it.] (SFMB)
  • Finn Morgendorffer 39: That S-E-X Word, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 3): Maybe I should just stop thinking about this, Finn thought. Jane knows I haven’t done anything like this. And she hasn’t, I know that for a fact. So, there’s no, like, expectations or anything. I can get through it. I. Can. Do. This. Finn smiled to himself. He almost didn’t make it to the bathroom before throwing up.
  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 20): How can someone who doesn't even know about YouTube know about the Khaki Barn?
  • NEW! Jacob Morgendorffer, Esq., by CAP (Part 6): As for the area itself, quiet was the word that came immediately into Helen’s mind.... The tracks were perhaps a bit close but Helen enjoyed the cadence of a passing train. It conjured the romance of travel especially when its seductive rhythm teased her in the deep dark of night. It was an aural aphrodisiac. Jake felt the same way. Quinn likely owned her existence to a passing Norfolk Southern zipping past their home one warm late spring night.

Speed Racer Lives!

Birthdays aplenty today. NASCAR, where Stacy Rowe finally hits it big (per IICY?), turns 62. The peace symbol (on Jake's belt buckle, below right) is 52. They've aged well.

Today also is an interesting U.N. mandated holiday: International Mother Language Day. I really suck at languages, even English, so anyone who can speak two or more languages or even geekspeak has my admiration. (I've had two years each of Spanish, Russian, and Latin, plus lived three years in Mannheim immersed in German, and I can't speak more than two brain-dead phrases of each. At least I can order lunch at McDonald's in German, so that helps.) Having once been an editor, looking up the roots of old words is rather fun for me, and it is amazing just how many thousands of years old some of our words and concepts are.

NeWz!

  • The Prodigal Daughter, by a440 (COMPLETE!): "AIDS," said Brittany. "Now my dad and stepmom will truly hate me for sure."
  • You're Standing on Our Necks, by Gojirob/Rob Morris (COMPLETE!): "Helen, it’s terrible! My—my father is coming over in a few days." "Jakey, I know how he makes you feel. I don't like him much, either. But we have to be fair. In fact, I can't remember the last time he came over. Or—that I saw him. But he is family." "He's the devil! What we need is a devil-killer person." "Maybe one will happen along, dear." (Daria/Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
PPMB
  • NEWER! After Daria, by Ravynstone (Part 1 plus): Daria picked up the syringe. It was lightweight, made of Space Age plastics, the kind of thing that would have appealed to her dad. he turned her back on the mirror and pressed the needle against her arm. She slid it into the vein with practiced ease, injecting the cocktail.
  • Daria: Hunter—Strictly Business, by Jim North (continued): "Don't even fink about trying any fancy logic nonsense to mess wiv the robot brain, because it ain't got one!"
  • Falling into College 72: Valley of Love and Delight, by RLobinske (Part 8): "Now that I've shared my news, how are you doing?" "I've actually working my All-American novel." "How many communists have you killed so far?"
  • Finn Morgendorffer 33: Independence, by HolyGrail2007 (Parts 3 to 5): Daria lay in her room, staring at the ceiling. She couldn’t stop thinking about Tom. Okay, I’ve never really had a boyfriend before, so I guess I really can’t compare it to anything. But I’m pretty sure this isn’t how it works.
  • Fire! The Facebook Edition, by Betting on Delusions (COMPLETE!): Tom Sloane and Jane Lane are attending the event Awkward Silence Following A Disagreement In A Relationship That Wasn't Even That Solid To Begin With.
  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding (ex-First Day of School), by Roentgen (Part 4): "Patty, let me ask you something. Everybody's taking about 'The Knowledge.' What's that supposed to—?" "Oh! Quinn! Excuse me for a moment! I totally forgot about this appointment with one of the profs!"
  • NEW! It's All About the Intention, by Psychotol (continued): "Daria, he was, like, crazy into you, you two could have been so good together, why did you send him running like that?” “I wasn’t interested in a threesome with him and Monique,” said Daria.
  • Kamen Rider D, by Silver (continued): "So, let me get this straight. I've become a Kamen Rider." "Yes, amiga, you have. You're now part of a group of characters dating back to 1971." "Way to make me feel old, Jane."
  • Sixteen Days of Sorry, by Dosco316 (COMPLETE!): "Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and, sadly, a nadir in US Olympic history. As many of you are aware, the epidemic of Penguin Flu decimated the US Olympic team and the US borders were closed to quarantine the sickness. For the United States Olympic Committee, the only options left were to forfeit their Olympic positions or allow the substitution of a team mostly comprised of high schoolers from Lawndale, Maryland, who had been stuck in Toronto on a radio station-sponsored trip, to take their place."
  • Teen Something, by Drachen (prologue and Part 1): Daria awoke to dawn in a dingy room in a filthy bed. She groaned as she felt her pounding head and protesting stomachache. Where was she? Slowly memories of the previous afternoon came to her. Van Driessen's wake for Beavis and Butt-head. The punch had made her feel so strange, so quick. Daria remembered leaving, walking unsteadily towards home. Staggering more with each step. Vague memories of meeting the ghosts of Beavis and Butt-head; them offering something and then helping her walk.
  • Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by NightGoblyn (appetizers): "I love transvestite porn. It's the only kind I can watch without feeling conflicted!"

...and then they went to Kitty Heaven

Eight years ago today, the last Daria movie was aired. Is It College Yet? drew appreciative reviews and a last interview. It's funny now to think that my time in this fandom did not begin until three months after the show went off the air. Weird.

In that last interview, Daria is asked, "Once you're in college, do you think that you'll find the happiness that has eluded you for, really, all your life?" She frowns and replies, "Why do people assume I'm unhappy just because I mope around all the time, saying snide things in a deadpan voice? I find that very judgmental. But in answer to your question: God, I hope so."

Today is also National Hug Day, about which Daria says this... and also this. 'Nuff said.

And finally this is the birthday anniversary of actor Telly Savalas, best known for his starring role in Kojak, a TV crime drama from the 1970s. I used to watch that, and it was pretty good. Kevin gives us his best imitation of Mr. Salavas as NYC police detective Kojak at left. Kinda surprised they did that as an alter ego, but Telly Savalas was a cool guy, too. (The big version of this image can be had by clicking on the little one.) Who loves ya, baby?

Thanks as always to UU and Pinhead for the marvelous images!

"Gorilla My Dreams..."

Sorry so late and random with the postings. That's how life goes sometimes.

Today is once again the birthday anniversary of gorilla expert Dian Fossey, whose name keeps getting misspelled in Daria fanfiction. Ms. Fossey became important in Daria lore in Is It College Yet? when Daria got a Dian Fossey award (if that's what it was, an award and not an subtle head-smack) from Ms. Li for (all together now): dazzling academic achievement in the face of near-total misanthropy. More about Ms. Fossey and her relationship to the Daria mythos may be learned here.

Two weeks left to mail in your nominations for the Booties. Check PPMB for the latest info.

A Pizza Holiday for Daria Fandom!

It's National Pizza with Everything (except Anchovies) Day! Trufen of Our Awesome Heroine, Jane Lane, you know what to do. Even Daria would approve.

One hundred sixty-nine years ago, the greatest sculptor of the modern age, Auguste Rodin, was born. One of his most famous works was parodied in the final Daria movie, Is It College Yet? (It was the gorilla statue Daria was given as an award, posed in the manner of The Thinker.) Rodin has something to do with a certain fanfic, too. Great role model for Jane. For art, I mean, not for his personal life, which was whacked out.

Princess Grace of Monaco was also born this day in history, 80 years ago, but she is mentioned here only because her birthday appears on the Sick Sad Life Planner DVD with a relevant quote from Brittany, who is clearly not well versed in royalty issues.

NuuuZ!
  • Pinhead has posted two quite interesting views of Daria, if she had continued to wear the clothing she did while living in Highland (a la Beavis and Butt-head). Weird. Kinda makes you think. The black-and-red outfit works better than the yellow one, I must admit, but the green-and-black was better. Daria's an "Autumn" and pulls off the latter very well.
  • The great and wonderful Anne D. Bernstein has more artwork to display.
Stay tooned 4 moar. Still early yet.

A Fanfiction Update Worth Waiting For

First, a public-service announcement:

OUTPOST DARIA
HAS UPDATED
!

Look for the latest goodies here. Thanks!

NEWZ ALERT! Kara Wild has discovered that Daria is listed among Television Without Pity's Top 10 Spinoffs! Most excellent!

Some New Iron Chefs have hit town on PPMB.

ARTSY NEWZ
Richard Lobinske has a crossover idea for Bump. Please encourage him to write it.

Lots of new stuff is online, and here's the takedown for the shakedown of the rundown on the lowdown, so get down! (Note: I've tried to avoid repeating FF.net stories that have already appeared on PPMB, except to add their links to earlier mentions of those stories in the blog.)

FF.net
  • Am I Home Yet? by Earthboy111 (Part 2, continued after 2.5 years!): Jane’s attitude hadn’t changed much, the two friends had seen very little of each other since the fall, despite their two universities being relatively close, each had been too engrossed in their own projects to socialize, at least that’s what they told themselves.
  • Nothing Wrong with Being Hufflepuff, by Daria234 (Part 1): "Miss Lane! Are you sure that you're following my instructions precisely?" "I'll check again, Professor Snape," Jane responded. From the row behind them, Daria and Jane could hear Draco whisper, "What can you expect from a Mudblood?"
  • Take Me on the Floor, by MandeeMistress (Part 4): Sunlight was such a brutal alarm clock. How long had she been asleep for? He vision was still impaired from the night before and her stomach was making waves comparable to the ocean. She had no idea where her glasses were, or how they had ended up off. She turned to her side and saw Trent...
PPMB
  • Checkers and Angel, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Gay? No way! Larry is so much not gay that it hurts!" Checkers spotted someone in the crowd. "Oh my god! Here he comes now! Shut up, shut up!"
  • Finn Morgendorffer, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4 COMPLETE!): “And just wait until November, Dad.” Finn turned to Jake, whom he hoped would be his ally in this. “The guys and I have been practicing our fighting. When you see me in the ring, you’re gonna be proud.” [Story followed by a round-table discussion of metrosexuality and ADHD.]
  • Finn Morgendorffer 5: What Kind of Model?, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): “You’ve got a good look, sweetheart. What’s your name?” “Sandi.” “Sandi, could you do a little runway for me? Just walk to the back of the room and then back here.” [Part 2: “Always remember your product, girls. When you are posing for catalogs, it’s all about you and the product. This leads to a happy client. Happy clients will contact your agent again, and your agent will remember it.”] [Part 3: Done!]
  • La Tigresse, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Before you ask questions...." muttered Tiffany, "I'm surrre you're interested in why...I'm in...the Fashion Club. When people meet me, they ask...whyyyy are you in the Fashion Cluuuuub?"
  • Lawndale's Finest—Detective Stories 4: Fledge, by NightGoblyn (Part 1): “She’s awake, but she’s still groggy,” Amy said. “God only knows what kind of chemicals she has running rampant through her system. The blood work is all over the map, half of the compounds are things the lab guys have never seen before.” “Well, at least she’s alive, right?”
  • Mart of Weirdness, Greystar (COMPLETE!): "Payday is currently experiencing a temporary power outage. Sales of butane, propane, methane, gasoline and other combustibles will be temporarily suspended until the sprinklers and ventilation system are working again, and we can get the damn doors open. Thank you for shopping the Payday waAAIIEEEEEEE!!!!!"?
  • Meowolody Powers, by Richard Lobinbske (Part 1): Meowlody crept in through the barely open window and dropped to the carpeted floor without a sound. She stepped out from behind the curtain as if she'd been there all afternoon. "Meow." The Chosen One spun around and said, "There you are. Where have you been hiding?" "Mewor." Sorry, that's classified. [And now, Part II!: "Fresh, not frozen."]
  • Our Time Now, by Charliefox2012 (Part 2): “Well, I'll show Helen. I'll pick up Quinn and make the lasagna,” Jake said building up confidence. “When Jake Morgendorffer says he'll do something, he dos it, I mean does it. Dammit!” he said firmly. Daria only watched him, hoping that this madness wasn’t genetic.
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 18): “I know you brains aren't exactly good with this kind of thing, but when you want to stop rumors that you're going out with someone you shouldn't ask her friends how she's doing.” “Nonsense. I just want to know how she is dealing with the slanderous accusations. That would be of interest to me, whether they are true or not.”
  • Room Spins, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Are you surrrre you don't want to go down to the Quarry?" Skylar smiled. "Gag," said Sandi. "You're drunk." "And you shared. You had like a fifth."
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Population Explosion), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): The attractive sixteen-year-old massaged her palm, still slightly sore after she had slapped that absolutely horrid Ruttheimer boy soundly across the face. How could he even imagine that I would find him attractive! He's small, and gangly, and for someone who supposedly comes from money, dresses like he's run through a thrift story with double-sided tape attached to his knickers, hoping something stylish would stick...
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): For the fourth time in half an hour, Jane stuck her index finger deep into her belly button, brought the digit up to her nose and sniffed. "Why does my bellybutton smell like salami?"
  • Unnamed story, by Teeki (Part 2): Still mostly asleep, Daria pushed aside the questions about the object on the floor and just kept walking. When she reached the lump, she stepped on it, squishing down hard like she had with all the Barbie shoes and purses and cars. But right away, she knew this was a bad move.
  • What I'm Pondering, by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "Gee, Daria, what do you want to do tonight?" Jane asked. "The same thing we do every night, Jane!" Daria replied, deadpan as always. "Kill Tom."
  • Wristcutters: A Daria Story, by Charliefox2012: [A great story, now up to Part 16! FF.net version is being revised.]
  • Wrylight, by Pinkminx (Part 5): "... And I need you to help me collect the dinner later. I don't care if you refuse to eat..." Trent's voice trailed off as he stood on the threshold of his sister's room and saw Daria. He rubbed his neck nervously as his eyes shifted from Daria to Jane. "Ah, Janey?" (FF.net)

It's Daria in the Movies Day! Yay!

Today is the ninth anniversary of the MTV premiere of Is It Fall Yet? and the seventh anniversary of the DVD release of Is It College Yet? The infamous live Daria-Jane chat was also held online nine years ago today, a special event in which the show's characters (or so we were led to think) answered your questions, even the stupid ones. Those were the good old days, indeed.

Today is also the 126th anniversary of the loudest sound ever known in human history: not a Led Zeppelin concert, but the 1883 final eruption of Krakatoa, which blew an entire island to smithereens. Unfortunately it was an inhabited island. The lesson of Vesuvius is apparently a difficult one to learn: if you live near a mountain that makes noises, leave at once. You would think this was simple, but as recently as the eruption of Mount St. Helens, people still hadn't gotten it down correctly. Doesn't give you a lot of hope for the future, does it?

Don't know if I've mentioned this news story before, but there is a great little article on fictional TV shows that appear within TV shows. Sick, Sad World gets mentioned, but so do a lot of the other shows that would make great background bits in Daria fanfics. Does Upchuck watch Miss Sally's School Yard?

  • D Is for Daria, by Fringeperson (Part 1): Almost on cue, the doorbell rang. It was either Daria or Tom, and Jane was really hoping it was the former, she needed to get her head examined, and apart from Trent, Daria was the best person at it that she knew. Keeping her thrice-pierced ear pricked, she heard Trent loaf to the door and the hinges wail slightly as the barrier swung open to permit entry. “Oh, hey Tom. Janey's up in her room.”
  • Kisses and Dichotomies, by NoLogique (Part 1): Tom was fascinated by woman's makeup. Before Ruttheimer had thrown him into the basement and had tried to beat out the world from him, Tom would go to dive bars near the pier and see the pale faces of the cabaret ladies, clownish with their purple eyes and bright red lipstick.
  • Pigskin Caduceus, by HolyGrail2009 (Part 3): “Now, we’ve been introduced to two characters in Wuthering Heights: Heathcliff, and Cathy, his daughter-in-law. Who here can explain how the two of them are alike?” A few brains sitting in the front of their class raised their hands, but Mr. O’Neill looked towards the back of class, where all of us popular kids sat. “What about you, Jeffy?” he asked.

  • The Awakening, by TAG (COMPLETE!): The lasagna that Daria’s mother often made for dinner had always had a metallic aftertaste, but it wasn’t until Daria was hunting for the salt very late one Friday night in July that she discovered another salt shaker in the top shelf of the cabinet behind the drinking glasses that no one ever used.
  • A Child's Book of Tom Sloane's Deaths, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): [I won't spoil this. Just read it. ]
  • Daria's Not So Little Helper, by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "So, what should we do to O'Neil today, amiga?" Jane asked. "Convince him that Michael Myers is just the product of a miss-spent youth?"
  • Farewell, My Cornholio, by Peapotmaster (Part 1): “I just wanted to tell you cretins that next week will be my last day here in Highland High,” said Daria. “Are you going to score?” Beavis asked. “No, buttmunch, Daria’s pregnant,” corrected Butt-Head.
  • Rolling the Dice, by Ajar (Part 4): Jane continued with a spot check. “The door flies open revealing what at first seems like a fairly average office space: One desk, one chair, one motivational poster and another door on the opposite side. In the first minute, or so, of entering the room you notice a residue, similar to the one you found earlier, around the poster, on the other door and all over the floor.” “Well,” said Quinn. “Since there's stuff around the poster and not on the poster, I'd guess that we should look behind the poster.” [Jane as a Dungeon Master? Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned....]
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): Berlin, Cabaret Wandersmann, August 1928: Dense swirls of blue smoke saturated the atmosphere, replacing the noxious oxygen that occupied the place during daylight hours.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Unwanted alien pets! Next, on Sick Sad World!), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Daria... this is a dream right? I'll wake up and Mom will be my mom and Dad will be my dad and no one will have died. I'll be hanging out with my friends pretending you're not my sister."
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Unwanted alien pets! Next, on Sick Sad World!), by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): Daria folded her arms. "My own daughter. I'm a little surprised at you. Why did you get a pet if you can't take care of it?"
  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Brains for Rent), by Tsrcroggs (Part 1): The public did not take well the idea of powerful meta-humans with a literal case of multiple-personality disorder. Laws had been enacted placing any known Oversoul into Facilities for their "care and treatment." Daria was the tenth Oversoul to be identified and the fifth to enter this particular Facility at the age of 13.
  • Warm Colors, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Daria sat on the end of her unmade queen-sized bed, flipping through the channels as Jane swept her brush through a dense tangle of colors rioting across her canvas. It was one of her abstracts, brilliant red and green swirling into the center. The effect was that of a person being sucked down into the center of a vortex.

The Moonwalker

For a while I thought there wasn't a Daria character who had done an alter ego as Michael Jackson, but then I remembered the time-travel beginning of Is It College Yet?, which featured a few seconds in which Jake was 1980s rapper Flavor Flav and Helen was...

The Moonwalker. White glove and all.

Sorry it took me so long.

Rest in peace, Michael Jackson, and thank you.

Minor Note: What other Daria character appears in an alter ego as Flavor Flav? (hint)

Wrestling & Wienerheads

Daria made a very early appearance on Beavis and Butt-head 16 years ago today in the episode, "Babes R Us." Check it out here while you can, read about it here, and buy the priceless artwork here. A short segment of this show, featuring Our Heroine, was included on the DVD for Is It College Yet? as an "Easter egg." She looks a bit different than she usually does.

Just a little something to perk up your day.

Oh, also in the realm of brightening your day, Pinkminx has revealed her remarkable artistic side with a portrait of Daria from her fanfic, "Reaped Out." Nice!

Plus Wouter has drawn a new one-page comic: "Daria and the Battle of the Sexes."

  • Helen Morgendorffer's Secret Past, by Kangaballs (Part 2): "You're going to trial for intent to sell and you didn't think I'd find out about it?!" Helen Morgendorffer stood with the phone cradled in her ear and her hands on her hips, pacing her office floor back and forth rapidly, trying hard not to yell or lose control. She couldn't risk her boss coming in and catching her using business time for personal phone calls. "What do you MEAN you didn't smoke it? I KNOW THAT. The problem is you were trying to SELL it and that's even worse!"
  • Reaped Out, by Pinkminx (Part 14): "Oh, come on, look we all eventually get an old boyfriend or girlfriend on a Post-It."
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: With New Responsibility, by Richard Lobinske (Part 3): Amazed at the feeling of being able to fly unaided after years of piloting helicopters, Archangel was in one of the middle positions of a finger-four formation with Don Javier's team. Below them, zombies retreated from the onslaught of multiple Ringbearer teams toward a distant, solid black arch.

Time Flies When You Don't Have A Clue

It's Saturday morning and I realized that it's been five years since I started "The Last Summer", setting Daria on a new path after "Is It College Yet?" that's grown far beyond what I had anticipated.

She's probably grumbling, "Okay, if it's been five years, why am I still in college?"

Where's Glenn? (#2)

Okay, so there's this bearded guy in a colorful shirt sitting in a dark theater in Is It College Yet? Could this guy be Glenn Eichler? He looks more like him than the previous guy. Wonder if the woman is supposed to be his wife (Michele Tomasik, editor for The Daria Diaries).

Some changes have been made to the main page of Backgrounders, defining which characters on Daria were major ones and which were minor, for the purposes of that website. I'd like to hear from you about that. Are there "major" characters you think are really minor ones, or vice versa?

More importantly, I'd like to hear from fanfic writers who have found the Backgrounders site to be of use to them in creating their stories. Daria is rich with unexplored territory, even seven years since the last original episode or movie appeared.

Ever wonder if Pizza King was a real place? Wonder no more.

Dennis, Richard Lobinske, Brother Grimace, and Disco316 have added a lot recently to DariaWiki. Latest page added is about Dominator.

  • Antiestablishmentarian Hikers, by Lawndale Lurker (continued): “Ohnoohcrapohdamn, we're doomed! Now we're all gonna die for sure! Idawannadieavirginnn! Waaaah!!"
  • The Other Side of Time: Unfinished Business, by The Sidhe (continued): Tom Sloane got out of the police car and looked at the ruined shell of his childhood home. He could see the remains of the front door, marked off with police crime scene tape. Beside him stood a couple of detectives from the Lawndale police.
  • Snuffed Animals, by Disco316 (Parts 18 and 19): By the time Daria had gotten to within a block of her home, she had walked off most of her frustration. She had even resolved to apologize for acting childish when she went over to Jane’s house the next morning. Maybe Jane would admit she was being childish too. However, her plans went out the window the moment she saw the car parked outside her house. [Note: part 19 is angst to the awesome power. Good show!]
