A Pizza Holiday for Daria Fandom!

It's National Pizza with Everything (except Anchovies) Day! Trufen of Our Awesome Heroine, Jane Lane, you know what to do. Even Daria would approve.

One hundred sixty-nine years ago, the greatest sculptor of the modern age, Auguste Rodin, was born. One of his most famous works was parodied in the final Daria movie, Is It College Yet? (It was the gorilla statue Daria was given as an award, posed in the manner of The Thinker.) Rodin has something to do with a certain fanfic, too. Great role model for Jane. For art, I mean, not for his personal life, which was whacked out.

Princess Grace of Monaco was also born this day in history, 80 years ago, but she is mentioned here only because her birthday appears on the Sick Sad Life Planner DVD with a relevant quote from Brittany, who is clearly not well versed in royalty issues.

NuuuZ!
  • Pinhead has posted two quite interesting views of Daria, if she had continued to wear the clothing she did while living in Highland (a la Beavis and Butt-head). Weird. Kinda makes you think. The black-and-red outfit works better than the yellow one, I must admit, but the green-and-black was better. Daria's an "Autumn" and pulls off the latter very well.
  • The great and wonderful Anne D. Bernstein has more artwork to display.
Stay tooned 4 moar. Still early yet.

Hooray for ASPCA Day!

Today is the 142rd birthday of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. Mother Nature, taking the form of science teacher Janet Barch as her earthly avatar, expects that wildlife will be respected. Offenders will be sent to "independent study" in carnivore dens.

On PPMB, Lorenzo Sauchelli offers a picture he did with Flash that he says is "Almost Biblical," in which Daria and Quinn settle their differences the old-fashioned way, with lightsabres.

More in a few minutes. Not quite "with it" yet.

[long pause]

Okay, let's try that again.

PPMB

More soon. Almost "with it" now.

Grrrl Pwrrr!

Ninety-six years ago today, the Girl Scouts of America was created. About twenty years ago today, Jane Lane was deprogrammed after leaving the Girl Scouts so she would stop singing about John Jacob Jingleheimer etc. (We need more Girl Scout Jane fanfic, hint hint.)

Speaking of Lanes, Wouter has issued an Iron Chef challenge called "The Other Lane Girls," in which he asks all artists to try their hands at drawing Summer and Penny Lane.

Speaking of fan art, Christ Oliver presents "Another kiss... almost!" which is an updated version of a picture he drew of Daria and Jane a while ago. Check it out.

Speaking of other Daria and Jane fanworks:

More later, and always remember this special thought. Cheers!

If It's Sunday, It Must Be UPDATE TIME!

Some help would be appreciated with additions I am making to a DariaWiki page on crossovers. I'm trying to locate crossovers in other fandoms that have used Daria, particularly in comics and animated media. Anyone know of any? Feel free to chip in if so.

Father Martin asks the musical question: "Deref in England" Dariacon - which weekend? Please check this out if you are in or plan to be in the U.K. in the near future, to welcome the famous foreigner, Deref of the Outback! (Not the steakhouse, though.)

And now, some fanfic and art updates.

Travel Broadens the Mind, They Say

Uh-oh. Blogger.com has notices saying it is having trouble online. It was down for a while earlier. Rats, hope this stays up. Blogging is fun! Here's the gnus.

Deref is asking about having a UK/Europe Dariacon. Makes sense, him being from Austria and all that.

Thinking about going to the Orlando Dariacon 2008 on the March 1-2 weekend? Click the link and let everyone know you're coming! Only 33 days left!

Fan Art
  • Winter in Hell, by DJPotatoe (Fan art for one of my stories! Yeee-haaaaw!!!)
  • The AU Boys, by acidgirl (Fan art for another of my stories! Darius Morgendorffer and John Lane, two alternative guys most excellently rendered in B&W.)
  • Daria the Animated Series - Now in 3D, by Christ Oliver (Daria/Superman busts out of the screen! Red/blue 3D glasses needed, but the effect is reported to be very cool.)
  • Kevin vs. DeMartino in "Lawndale Fighters"! (Thank you, S.C., for the addition!!!)

Ficlet Threads

Fanfic
  • Been Here Before, by The Sidhe (Part 33: Daria's morning after, and it appears a surprise is coming just before the story ends.)
  • Change is in the Cheer, by lupinsmoon12391 (COMPLETE! A very interesting story about Daria, Jane, Brittany, and Mack, but mostly about Jane and Mack.)
  • Crouching Monster, Hidden Magic, by LSauchelli (Parts 1-3: A wild new Daria/Harry Dresden crossover takes off.)
  • The Cynic, The Fashionista and The Jackass, by Doggieboy (Part 7: A great Daria crossover with The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.)
  • EarthFall, by legendeld (Episode 1, Parts 1-2: Beginning a new tale, a Daria/Robotech crossover.)
  • Everybody Loves Jane, by many demented fans, loving compiled by Derek (Ongoing, no end yet in sight despite claims to this effect.)
  • Falling Into College 61: Latitudes, by Richard Lobinske (Part 9: As a bonus, story includes many random brain misfirings posted by the fans.)
  • Lane Change, by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETED! In the final chapter of this Daria/Doctor Who crossover, Trent learns the truth about Jane and Daria!)
  • Lesson Learned, by legendeld (COMPLETED! And we meet the father of Daria's baby!)
  • A Little Vacation, by Doggieboy (Parts 1-3: The title is a gross understatement.)
  • The Misery Chicks, by NightGoblyn (Part 6: Angst! Ouch ouch ouch! Love it.)
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker: Part II, by jtranser (Further adventures into the outer limits of Stacy's future.)
  • Surprises, by legendeld (Parts 8-10: The story continues to live up to its title as an old new face threatens to appear.)
  • Turnabout Confusion Part II: All The King's Horses, by Dennis (Blooood on the mooooon!!! Blooood on the mooooon!!!)
Whew, that was a lot. I'll update the 2008 fanfic list later.

I May Not Know Art, But I Know What I Liek!

A tiny little bit of a train wreck of a week has finally passed, but it's Friday night now so why worry over trivia? Some amazing works have appeared in the art folder on PPMB. For your delight, see:

so guess wut i herd: slobbergoat's Daria-ized version of a popular Internet meme. (I lieked it.)

Cast Portrait (WIP): Daria's face in startling high realism, by S.C.

I'm new here, and I guess my art is too: DJPotatoe's version of Mystik Spiral, with two full-color crossover pictures of Fashion Club members hanging out with cool video-game characters.

True to my word, I have sent in my votes for the 2007 awards. I found the experience quite painful, as many categories had multiple entries of outstanding caliber, and choosing the best from each took a longer time than expected. It was impossible to just "knock out." My thanks to everyone who contributed fan art and fanfiction. Will 2008 top the past year in quality?

More soon, I hope. A lot of new fanfic has come out, and I am extremely far behind in reading it. Not a great week, as I said, but maybe this weekend will make up for it.

Some Call It . . . . . . . Art

Alas, alackaday, I am woefully behind on updating all the new and continued fanfics on PPMB, but I will get around to it one of these months.

Meanwhile, check out the new artwork by Acidgirl: "Bosquejos," which means "sketches of Daria," and "Apocalyptic Daria," featuring Daria and Martin with happy faces because they haven't yet been blown up or irradiated, though we can always hope.

More news, or at least something, soon.

LATE-BREAKING NEWS: Sleepy Lotus has begun a new serial story on ff.net called "Night Owl." Daria/Trent shippers, you know where to go and what to do.

Meanwhile, back at the art colony....

I am way behind on reading fanfic on PPMB, my apologies. I don't have time for it during the week and have to play catchup on weekends. However, here are some art-related threads and pictures for you, from PPMB.

Considering the Source, by Bliss Ticks

Daria Alter-Ego Outlines on The-N, Christmas additions by Reese Kaine

Possible x-over Fan Art: Jane as Lulu from Pandora's Box? A very interesting series of screen shots from Scissors MacGillicutty, showing actress Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box, looking extremely Jane Lane-like. I had always thought that Natalie Portman in The Professional looked just like a young Jane Lane, so there must be more Jane Lanes out there. Anne D. Bernstein also looks more than a bit like an adult Jane Lane. There you are. Life is good, isn't it?

Daria FanArt 2007 List - Updated by Richard Lobinske: Tons of artwork for 2007! (same on SFMB)

2007 Booties: Daria FanWorks Awards - Visual Works, by Quiverwing: Get on the stick and nominate, yo! (This includes me, as I have not yet gotten on the stick. So to speak.)

More news later, must clean the house first or something. Fanfiction news and updates coming. This has been a heck of a year for it.

Ten Days Left Until Christmas, or Whatever

Yesterday more links went into the Lawndale Mall section at left, so your holiday shopping should be a little easier.

Interesting things on PPMB . . .

Bring on some funny!, a welcome diversion from Kristen Bealer.

The Unofficial Story Search Thread, in case you need to find a fanfic.

Things Students Are No Longer Allowed To Do At Lawndale High, a thread that has responded well to necromancy and is alive and kicking.

A Yankee Marine in General Lee's Army, a digression from another fanfic in which everyone argues over what the present United States of America should do about a triumphant Confederate States of America in an alternate universe, and about thirty other interrelated issues such as why the AK-47 is such a good weapon, good fun for the alternate-history buffs among our fandom.

2007 Booties: Daria FanWorks Awards - Visual Works, in which S.C. and HSX strut their stuff, double whoa.

Interesting new entry on DariaWiki, too, about a new metal . . .

More soon. The ice storm outside guarantees I'm not going anywhere for a while.
