The Fandom's Fourth

A mere 148 years ago today, a peculiar English reverend told a fantastic story to three little girls, all sisters, while they were on a boat trip. Ten-year-old Alice, the middle sister, asked him to write it down, and three years later, he did and published it, and that is where we get all of our Alice stories. No kidding. (Thanks to Pinhead for the very relevant alter ego at right.)

As noted in an earlier blog post, number of Daria fanfics take place July 4th. It was of course the day of the Landons' party in Is It Fall Yet? (scene 20). It has also appeared in the following fanfics, arranged in alphabetical order by story.
Do you recall any other Fourth of July Daria stories? If so, post them below in Comments.

There's a songfic that references this day, too.
July 4th also marks some important fanfiction events, such as:
Quite a day, wouldn't you say?

Which Holiday Shall I Celebrate First?

A scene from this Daria story took place 41 years ago today. Today is also a bunch of interesting holidays rolled into one. We have:
How you plan to celebrate all that is up to you. Good luck. Stay tooned.

NEWER! Charles RB has created a new Iron Chef: Tommy Sherman has risen from the grave! Go there and do your best!

And on to the fanfiction.

PPMB
  • Daria: Hunter 6—Infectious, by Jim North (continued): "Daria, your little SIDEKICK is talking to me again as if I give ONE SINGLE DAMN ABOUT WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY!" Jane's jaw dropped. "Amazing! We're in the middle of a deadly situation, he's stuck in a cell and we're the only ones who can get him out, and he's still picking on me!" "Hey, you," Daria told DeMartino, "stop picking on my sidekick." As DeMartino's face split into a wide grin, Jane fixed her partner with a steely glare. "You are so not helping things," she said.
  • NEW! Don Jake and the WTF Plot Twist, by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "What’s that sound?" "Sounds like a jet engine." "Damned airlines. Can’t even go on a damn hike without hearing their damn jets." "Jake..." "I don’t see anything. It should be getting closer if it’s getting this loud." "What’s that?"
  • NEWEST! First Born, by RLobinske (Part 1): Michael Fulton leaned forward over the steering wheel of the car he and his wife Daria Morgendorffer had rented at the Gainesville Airport. Heavy, driving rain made visibility almost nonexistent as he tried to stay on the narrow, two-lane road. "Did a hurricane move in and somebody forget to tell us? I can hardly see where we're going, let alone our turn." Daria pointed to a device on the dashboard. "Follow the GPS." "And end up like one of those delivery trucks stuck between two buildings?" "According to Karen, we're more likely to end up stuck between two horses' asses around here."
  • Judith Strikes! Tidings of Comfort and Joy, by Brian Taylor (COMPLETE!): Amy quit talking in a hurry when she saw the figure in the doorway. A silhouette, short in stature, long in shadow, stood in the door. "My favorite aunt." The silhouette stepped into the light. It turned out to be a young woman, nineteen or maybe twenty years of age. Her boots were thick and black. Her cloak was red. What little of her oval face could be seen under the heavy hood was flat and affectless, the mouth drawn into a cold sneer. "Who's she today?"
  • NEW! Judith Strikes! Wraithkiller, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Sorry, Ian, but don't worry. You and Anastasia are going to appreciate getting your old rings back in the future," Judith said as she removed a tarnished, copper ring from the severed hand she held. "And you'll be happy little Ringwraiths." The woman in the red cloak kicked the bloody body that the hand had belonged to. Then, she tilted her head up and said, "I love the smell of paradox in the morning. It smells like vengeance." (FF.net)
  • NEW! Sleepwalker, by Jim North (continued): The sun had nearly gone down by the time the convoy pulled into Erbie Motel's parking lot, which was completely spare except for an old model sedan and a large van that looked as if it had been painted over with house paint. Nick's Inn, as far as anyone could see, was completely deserted, and both motels stood as evidence that tourist season hadn't started yet and probably wouldn't for at least a few more months. Principal Angela Li was the first to step down onto the cracked asphalt. She took a few steps forward and inhaled a deep breath of the fresh spring air, then exhaled it back out into the cooling evening sky. She then turned to the row of buses behind her and held her hands into the air dramatically. "All ashore, everyone!" she called out, motioning to the drivers and teachers to start getting the children disembarked.
  • That Infernal Nonsense, by Ajar (COMPLETE!): "They call me Mack Daddy—not Mack, but Mack Daddy, though I could never tell why, but always it's Mack Daddy—not Mack, but Mack Daddy, forever a Mack Daddy, I!" (Daria/H.M.S. Pinafore)
  • Unnamed story (SHINING STAR: A new shared Dariaverse setting), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): [An absolutely perfect ficlet by a talented and wonderful author!]
  • NEW! The Vision of the Burning Cities, by jtranser (continued): "I'm fascinated by that object you hold in your hand, Dr. Morgendorffer. May I ask how you obtained it and what you do with it?" "This? I got it from another patient. I keep it as a souvenir of an extremely difficult case that continues to ramify in several new dream dimensions, some of which may attain the status of full grown universes should they become stable. As to what it is, I only know a small part of what it can do. It has mysteries that haven't chosen to reveal themselves to me at this time."

Spring Has Sprung! Fall Has Fell!

Lots of interesting tidbits for this day, so get ready. "The Story of D" premiered nine years ago today, midway through the fifth season of Daria. The episode's title was based upon the title of a famous pornographic novel, The Story of O, about which no more will be said here. Look it up on your own. "The Story of D" was embarrassing enough for Daria, who is at a low point when she goes over to Tom's house to blame him for her story being turned down by a magazine. The shame of it. The image at left is Daria's face when she realizes that she has been... (duh DUNNN)...
REJECTED!!!

Today is also the spring equinox, at 1:32 PM EST (adjust for your time zone). You may dance around the Maypole and throw flowers or whatever. It's *Spring*! (This holiday is applicable to the Northern Hemisphere only; it's the autumnal equinox below the equator, where everything is backwards.)

Because this is springtime, this day is also the Persian/Iranian new year's day, celebrated as such for the last 3,000 years; Ostara, a pagan holiday (Mabon in the Southern Hemisphere); Equinox Earth Day (some say it is the real Earth Day); a holiday I cannot pronounce in Japan, there for admiring nature; Chunfen in China; International Astrology Day; the International Day of the Francophonie (party hard if you speak French like Daria and Jodie); St. Cuthbert's Day (for Dungeons & Dragons game enthusiasts); Sham el-Nessim in Egypt; and (most importantly for this fandom) World Storytelling Day. The storytelling theme for this year is "light and shadow."

Oh, and it is also Extraterrestrial Abductions Day. Srsly. Poor Artie. Tiffany is the E.T. poster girl at right.

The downside is, a tragic event occurred six years ago today in one of the many Dariaverses out there. A sad and magnificent story.

Do you know of any other crossover appearances of characters from Daria besides those given here? If so, drop a note and the item will be added to DariaWiki.

ART!!!

PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 38: Fractures, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): “I understand if you’re weirded out. I mean, dating your buddy's ex doesn't jive with the dude code.” “The code is malleable. Us guys are nothing if not understanding of our buddies. You two are both my friends, and I care that your happy. If you’re happy and she’s happy, that’s all I’m concerned about.”
  • Getting a Bye, by Disco316 (COMPLETE): Daria sat in her room, pondering how best to phrase her question for the first, and quite possibly last, test she’d ever have to give. As she finalized her test, a knock was heard at her door. She saved her work and called, “Chaos reigns within.” The door opened, revealing Sandi. She was wearing a very low-cut burgundy top with a black micro miniskirt. “Hello, Daria.” Daria looked around, unsure what to think of the scantily-clad Fashion Club president before her. “Um, I think you have the wrong room, Sandi.” “Oh, Daria, Quinn and your parents left for a movie,” said Sandi. “They won’t be back for a couple hours. This is between you and me.”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker, by jtranser (continued): "As far as ThirdSight is concerned, you're just another predator trying to get in the game. And the only thing they haven't yet decided is what sort of cage to put you in."
  • Uplinked, by Silver (COMPLETE!): Hiro: Cynic, this is insane. / RacheIsGod: All the more reason to go for it. / CynicalData: Shut up, please. I'm working. (Daria/Cyberpunk 2020 RPG)

Happy Holidays!

Yes, once again it is time to look under the Christmas tree and find nothing, but in the closet nearby are two guys who are into some kind of kinky bondage thing. That's the Christmas spirit!

More words of Christmas wisdom from Daria can be heard right here. Such a font of wisdom.

Remember Triste Monde Tragique, that French supersite that's not around anymore? It had a great holiday logo.

Want to read MOAR Daria Christmas fanfiction? Head to the special collection at Sh33p's Fluff. Enjoy!

NOTE: I've been searching for "Christmas Present," by Aloysius, but it has vanished. Anyone see it? It was based on "A Little Vacation," by Doggieboy. A pregnant Daria is trying to make a cake for Robert, but zombies get in the way.

Merry Christmas!

A little surprise from
Daria's Sick, Sad Life Planner: Daria's Holiday Wishes

Got a Christmas fanfic you want to write? Try the all-new Iron Chef: The Christmas Episode, started by Kael Seoras. (A great Iron Chef from the past was NightGoblyn's Iron Chef: Merry Christmas!) (And remember that great memory lane thread about your favorite Christmas fanfics? Thanks, Richard!)

And here's a special message from X, who sez: "Yo, my homies, this be the X talking at ya! Time to get down with it and open presents! It's after midnight, so it's legal! Party on, and remember: be excellent to each other all year long, don't hog the nog, peace out on Earth, and Good Will Hunting!"

This has been a Very Special Message from X, the Holiday Formerly Known as Christmas, speaking from the Holiday Island High School Christmas Party at the Holiday Island High School Gym. This greeting is not void even if prohibited by law. Don't Hog the Nog is a trademark of X. All Rights Reserved. Would someone please expand the DariaWiki page on this guy?

TURKEY TIME!

Thanksgiving might be a stressed-out teen with family issues on Holiday Island, but here in the USA it is a time for being with your family even when they drive you totally insane. A lot of Daria fanfic has been written with a Thanksgiving theme, and here it is. Enjoy your drumstick!

And a visual bonus: the Daria cast at the original Thanksgiving party, by Robin Sena.

If you insist on a fashionable turkey for your dinner, the one at right should be perfect.

We give Daria the last word.

Have fun!

The Witching Hour

That's about it. I can't find any more good Halloween stories. Time for you to write some more.

Have a great night and a better tomorrow. Ciao.
