The Return of the Dariawiki

Charles RB reports that the Dariawiki is no longer giving any security certificate warnings on Firefox or Chrome. Because Malwarebytes is giving "hijack" alerts during login, anyone logging in should make sure their antivirus and anti-spyware is ready. However, browsing should now be safe.

Charles RB would like to make sure everyone is aware that the Dariawiki is currently experiencing a security certificate issue. He recommends avoiding the site until the problem is cleared up.

The Buns of August

It's August first, and today marks the 29th birthday of MTV, which gave us Daria (and, more importantly, Jane Lane). We also got A Flock of Seagulls, but Daria made up for it. And with Daria we got memes like "You taste of bun" and 666 versions of "I kissed your boyfriend." Pure win.

I have been horribly remiss in not discussing all the exciting things going on over at DariaWiki, the online encyclopedia of all things Daria. Special thanks go out to the following contributors for the month of July: Ingsoc, Brother Grimace, HolyGrail2007, Doggieboy, RLobinske, OverlordMikey, JPAGC, Charles RB, Pittsburghmuggle, Brian Taylor, Dark Kuno, Doc Forbin, Shallow15, Kchishol1970, InnerCircle, JonathanDP81, EvChemical, and Quiverwing. You people make it rock!

The new material at DariaWiki includes stuff about: "The Big Wedding," Robert, Finn Morgendorffer, Evan Landon, Corey, "Through a Webcam Darkly," Martha Peters, "Speedtrapped," Russell Stark, Science Fiction, Wind Lane, OverlordMikey, Crossover, Lawndale, Ramona, "Too Many Choices," Pam Garrett, Hammer Blow, Charles RB, Judith Strikes, Off-Canon Canon, Trueblood Cafeteria, Nicky, Spatula Man, Angie, Defender Ring, Max Tyler, Dr. Millepieds, "The Daria Hunter," Good Time Chinese Restaurant, Daria Multiverse, Steve Taylor, Architects, "Through a Closet, Darkly,"Kevin Thompson, The Chronicler, John Berry, "Daria!" Bibby Birks, Drugs 'N' Stuff, "Grove Hell on Earth," Beavis and Butt-head, Falling into College, The Fashion Club, Daria! Song Lyrics, "It's a Living," Quiverwing, The Coffee Snob, and "Backyard Foray." Doubtless some of these are not familiar to you if you haven't been in the fandom long, but don't worry: it will catch up with you.

Moar l8r when I think of something to add. Oh, one interesting historical note: 99 years ago today, Harriet Quimby became the first American woman to earn her pilot's license. She wore a purple aviator's outfit and was very famous for a time. Purple, hmmm.

  • The Judith Strikes! shared setting is now closed, per Erin M. A few unfinished stories will be finished soon.
  • You are invited to attend the Shared World Workshop, begun by Staticblast, on PPMB.

  • Daria/Dorian 6: Christmas Chaos, by LadieT (Part 2): Everyone was sitting around the table as Lillian talked to Amy about the recipe. Helen and Quinn took several mugs down. Amy ladled the drink and added a cinnamon straw to each. As everyone was enjoying their drinks, Amy stood up and gently tapped the side of her mug. They turned towards her. "With everything that has been going on, I realized just how much I've missed being around my family. I wanted to let you know. I came back to Lawndale two weeks ago and looked at houses. I found one I really liked. I have to sign the paperwork for it on Wednesday."
  • The Ending of Judith Strikes? Green Book? by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): Michael and Jake walked out to confront Judith, who held Daria captive. "Kiddo, it'll be all right!" Jake cried. "Listen, Judith, you can have the book, just let Daria go!" Suddenly Brittany ran outside. "No, Mr. McNinch, don't!" "Brittany, I am a father and as such understand what it would mean to lose a child. Has not Jake suffered enough?" Brittany remained silent for a moment before yelling, "Use the power of love to defeat her!"
  • NEWEST! Finn Morgendorffer 55: Dreamer Without a Cause, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): “I hope that’s the worst problem Finn has in his whole life.” Helen remarked at the empty chair. “What a problem to have: Bromwell or Crestmore? Both are good.” “And no military school, yeah! Not a single year or latrine duty or anything. Finn really nailed it!” "Jake..."
  • NEWEST! Jane Lane: Ace Attorney—Turnabout Teacher's Pet, by LSauchelli (Part 3): Well, this is certainly not the way I thought I would be dealing with cases once I passed the bar exam, Jane thought as she eyed the red-headed PI. She wasn’t annoyed because she didn’t trust the man—she certainly didn’t—it was because she actually knew she needed his help if she was to save not only Barch, but her career as well. And her mission of getting Daria to answer some questions, of course.
  • Judith Strikes! And It Would Come to Pass, by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): Judith sat alone waiting. Of course it would take an army to stop the girl, so she was unafraid of a few monsters living in some fantasy world. "So you're Judith..." came the voice of a woman. Out walked a finely dressed young woman with long black hair, wearing a long red dress and red gloves that covered her arms. She had a devilish smirk and her eyes shined with a twisted intellect. She slowly walked into the room followed by another woman. "You're the girl of the hour, so to speak. Be less gloomy. It reflects badly on me and my people if I hire someone so..."
  • NEW! Judith Strikes! Closing Ceremony, by Erin M. (COMPLETE!): Helen Morgendorffer wept loudly into a handkerchief, as Amanda Lane, the Morgendorffer's housekeeper, tried to comfort her. "It'll be all right, Helen," Amanda was saying. "Vincent, Wind, and Summer are out with the search party and I have Penny looking after Jane and Trent. I'll be here for as long as you need me, and Vincent swears he'll call as soon as he hears anything." "It's all my fault," Helen sobbed. "I should have taken more maternity leave to look after her, instead of rushing back to the office as soon as I could. I'm a horrible mother." "No," Amanda said, rubbing Helen's back. "No, you aren't. It's not your fault Daria was kidnapped. Put the blame where it belongs, on the sick and evil bastard who took her away from you."
  • Judith Strikes! The Last Stand of Odell Jones, by Brother Grimace (Part 1): Well, you heard about that little bitch Judith—the evil version of Daria Morgendorffer? (I’m sure that you’ve heard of her.) We lost three ships and eighteen hundred people as a diversion for her to steal one of our slipstream vessels. My name is Odell Jones. I’m a Warhammer—a Ringbearer trained for military operations. The word has come down from Command, on Nova Valdris. My team has its orders. We’re gearing up—and we’re going to get that vessel back.
  • Judith Strikes!/Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: The Legion Encounters, Part I: Pizza Night with the Girls, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Daria Morgendorffer sipped at her glass of ice water, and watched a very familiar female form appear in her Legion Tower apartment where the blue flash of light appeared a bare moment before. “Hello,” she said, causing the young woman in the catsuit and red cloak to stop in surprise. “Looking for something?”
  • Judith Strikes!/Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: The Legion Encounters, Part II: An Unexpected Stop, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): The young woman known as Judith fell away from the door, the wicked-looking blade in her right hand falling free as she gagged upon the thick cloud of metallic-gray gas that enveloped her head. Before she could react, the room was filled with light and sound.
  • Judith Strikes!/Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: The Legion Encounters, Part III: Equal Payment, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Charles was about to head over to Brittany Taylor’s house to work on their project for Science class—of course, he had something better in mind than that. No. Not that. Brittany was quite the fair and fetching flower of feminine perfection, but she, sadly enough, lacked even the most basic capacity for worthwhile conversation...
  • Judith Strikes!/Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: The Legion Encounters, Part IV: Not So Different, by Brother Grimace (Part 1): “You’re not supposed to hit girls.” David Allen Farrington said, the tone in his voice kind but firm. That wasn’t enough for the eleven-year-old that sat next to him. “Why not, if they hit you first?” David Allen sighed, and took a moment to look around the area from his spot on the stage of the Kuznov Auditorium—because of circumstances (namely, having lost a bet), the place where he and a fellow Cadet First Class were having their weekly ‘campfire’.
  • Judith Strikes! Miss Helen Sue, by GlitterShrooms (intro): The Glen Oaks Lane of this world didn’t seem unusual from all the other ones Judith visited. Of course, most versions were lit by the lights of the street lamps and suburban houses instead of the starlight of an undisturbed night sky. Still, it wasn’t the possibility of a dead Lawndale that worried Judith. She had visited hundreds of those by now. What worried Judith though was the fact that an extremely powerful gem, one that could ruin everything she worked for, was here in a Lawndale that the rest of the civilized world was apparently ignoring for some unknown reason.
  • NEW! Judith Strikes/Tales of the Ringbearers: Calling the Children Home, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): The sound rang out through the Citadel of the Ringmasters—loud, droning, and ominous. It rang out from the Citadel and could be heard across the land. It rang out across the world, and all on the Earth that some knew as D-476 could hear its sound.
  • NEW! The Lane That Wasn't, by LadieT (Part 11): Jane was back in her bed when Mr. DeMartino and Ms. Defoe walked in. Jane felt a tinge of sadness as she watched her favorite teacher head towards her "favorite student." Mr. DeMartino sat beside Jane. His face didn't show his usual anger or frustration. He looked over at Jane with genuine concern on his face. "How are you doing, Ms. Morgendorffer?"
  • NEWEST! Legacy, by Getrealordie187 (Prologue and Part 1): He stares at her in amazement, the man named Dr. Geoffrey Hopkins, thinking this isn't the first time he's had to look at her like that. "What on earth happened to you?" She's grinning maniacally, making the sight of her in her paint-covered fatigues even more off-putting. "Some of the boys in Company B tried to put my back against the wall. I was waiting for them with Company D. About time that little rivalry started working for me rather than against me." (Part 1) (Daria/The Killers)
  • NEWEST! The Long Con, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): The end of year at Buxton had a rite of passage - the playing of the last call, next to the memorial for the alumni who'd been lost in action. Cadet Morgendorffer, clad in immaculate dress uniform, had noted there was a lot of names. This was it. The end. Ninth grade had been and gone, and it was time to see how it had worked.
  • Mac Daddy's Discipline, by rglovejoy (COMPLETE!): The ropes holding Kevin to the stainless steel table were a little too tight. The pain was both overwhelming and delicious. Except for the leather harness around his chest, he was completely naked. The soft sounds of mellow jazz music flowed out of the adjacent bathroom. The dungeon was dim, except for the lit candles set in a small tray at Kevin's feet. He heard footsteps coming down the stairs. To his relief, it was Mac. Everything was going to be alright, so long as Mac Daddy was here.
  • NEW! The Many Ways A Mother Could Go..., by OverlordMikey (Part 1): Helen Barksdale sat alone in her large office. She sighed as she flicked her hair back out of her face. It's not like I was trying to work my way to the top or anything, she thought as she sat in a large comfy chair. I just liked working. Still, maybe I overdid this. What would have happened if I had became a lawyer... She let out a laugh as she imagined someone cracking a lawyer joke. Being on the top—a CEO. She'd worked hard and here she was! No regrets! She noticed an envelope placed in the pile of all her paperwork. (FF.net)
  • Pulp Fiction, by Chris Tucker (continued): There were odd little snippets of the events during her 18 months in training that stuck in Daria's memory, even years later... "Ms. Morgendorffer, for the next six weeks you will be learning the art and science of escape and evasion. There are 5 rules that make up the basics. Rule 1. Don't get captured. Rule 2. DON'T GET CAPTURED!"
  • NEWER! Pulp Fiction: Africa, by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): She never did figure out when the old Daria ceased to be. At some point, the bitter cynicism, the cutting sarcasm, the misanthropy just went away. She did know that she could pinpoint where it began. Day, date, time, place, and words. "He doesn't know what it means." But, at some point during her time in Boston, it all changed. So gradually, she didn't really notice.
  • NEWEST! The Question, by LadieT (Parts 5 and 6 and 7 and 8: COMPLETE!): "Barch! What the hell is SHE doing here?" Daria almost wrecked as she slammed on the brakes. "I'm serious. She just pulled into the front parking lot. Daria, where are you at?" Jane motioned to Jodie to go back inside. Jodie shot through the courthouse door. "Right now, we are in the left side parking lot. Are you sure it's Barch?" "Yeah..the car had a 'Take Back Night Lawndale High School Women's Self Defense Club' bumper sticker on the back of it." "Damn it!" (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8)
  • NEW! A Road Trip Game, by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Hey Jess," Trent said as they drove down the road in the Tank. The other guys where fast asleep. Only he and Jesse remained awake. "I came up with new lyrics." "Yeah?" Jess said vacantly.
  • NEWER! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Guys and Guys), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): Jeffy, as always, looked nervous. Tom shook his head and pushed the boy playfully on the shoulder. "Come on, man, we're just go-karting. Two cute guys messing around with cars, who's going to suspect?"
  • NEWER! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Guys and Guys), by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): It started simply enough. He'd always known he was different. He thought that he was the only one in the world that felt like this, The only one who had these urges and needs. He never acted on them, because, well, he WAS the only one in the world.
  • NEWER! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Guys and Guys), by Derek (COMPLETE!): Helen walked through the front door and stopped in shock...
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Military School), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): Once the rank and file were settled into their chairs, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony DeMartino snapped the heels of his shoes smartly to call attention to the front. All noise ceased immediately as every eye turned forward. Pleased with the speed of compliance with his nonverbal order, DeMartino smiled slightly and began to speak in calm, even tones. "Class, we have a new cadet joining us today," he said. "Please welcome Fourth Class Cadet Morgendorffer. ON YOUR FEET, SOLDIER!"
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Guys and Guys), by Breitasparrow (Part 1): I can't believe I made her cry, Tom thought. It had been a few hours since he confronted Jane about her strange behavior. He didn't think things would get weird between them after that one day, but he also didn't expect her to react the way she did. I just hope she'll accept my apology. After a few rings, he started to think no one would answer. Just as he was about to hang up, he heard a familiar voice. "Hello?" "Oh, hey, Trent. Is Jane there? It's kinda important."
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Real Esteem), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Like, esteem!" "Like, a teen!" "They totally don't rhyme, do they?" the blonde guy said, shaking his head with melodramatic sadness. "It's like, they almost do, but then they don't, right? And that's not really cool." "Right!" his partner agreed, a goofy grin plastered across his face. "But we're here to totally fix that! We're gonna make all you little dudes and dudettes totally rhyme!" (Daria/Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure)
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Judith Strikes! Closing Ceremony), by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): On the monitor of his scanner, Hypersphere Supervisor Richard watched a reality thread flare to a bright, angry red. A voice behind him said, "And so it begins."
  • NEWER! Unnamed story (Judith Strikes! Closing Ceremony), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "You were on your LAST WARNING for scrawling, student!" "I didn't do it this time, I SWEAR—"
  • NEWEST! Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Wraith (COMPLETE!): Jane took a bite of the meal she had scraped together from the last of the food left in the kitchen. Namely, a Ding Ding, the only slice of baloney that wasn't too green, and a large quantity of mustard. As she chewed, she processed Daria's last comment. (Daria/UHF)
  • MOST NEWEST OF ALL! Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Roxanne M (COMPLETE!): Helen was in the kitchen warming up a tray of frozen lasagna for dinner when the doorbell rang. She walked over and answered the door, to be greeted by a man and woman dressed in light blue blazers, white shirts, and black neckties. The man spoke: "Are you Helen Morgendorffer?" Helen replied, "Yes I am, and who might you be?" The woman replied this time: "I am Kate Monday, and this is my partner, George Frankley." In unison they flashed police badges and said, "Mathnet." Brittany Rocks!

Brittany Taylor appears here as she might look if famed sculptor Henry Moore had used her as a model for one of his abstract works. Today is Henry Moore's 112th birthday anniversary (as was noted last year). Not sure if this qualifies as "fan art," as Mr. Moore died over a decade before Daria went on the air.

Penguin Books celebrates its 75th birthday today. The appearance of Penguin sparked the paperback book revolution, making inexpensive copies of great works available to everyone, at least until today when the price difference between a large trade paperback and a hardbound is almost nothing, given that they cost about $20 each.

  • College Wry, by LibertyBellJar (Part 5): Working the graveyard shift of the local twenty-four-hour convenience store could not be said to be the most favorable job in the word. But, the way the young clerk saw it, you had your perks. Witnessing the craziest of the crazies, for example, as he was now. One of the two soaking wet girls before him merely glared ferociously when he smirked, "Having a fun night, ladies?"

Roses Are Red, And Appreciated Too

This is Red Rose Day, the origin of which is not known but it still sells a lot of roses. Flower industry, maybe. Perhaps it is not coincidental that this is also Loving Day, the origin of which is most definitely known and highly appreciated. It is also Russia Day, and Russians are said to be fond of the color red, so it all works out.

  • Daria Hunter: Collision Course, by Bhut (COMPLETE!): "...And so," said Ms. Li, "the school board decided to donate this grant to Lawndale High's Filmmaking Club!" "But we don't have this kind of club!" "We do now!" (Daria/Crocodile Hunter)
PPMB
  • Daria/Dorian, by LadieT (continued): Jane and Tom sat at their usual table in the Zon. Between the music and the image of Dorian shirtless, Jane couldn't focus. Tom stared at her sad and distant face with concern. Jane felt his hand reach for hers. Her mind replayed her conversation with Dorian just hours earlier. We can't hold hands Jane. You have a boyfriend, remember?" Jane winced slightly. Tom gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
  • NEW! Finn Morgendorffer 49: Blessed Be This Meal, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 3): “Hey.” Jane’s voice sounded on the phone when Finn answered it. “Hey. Good to hear from you again.” Finn relaxed as he lay down on his bed. “What’s up?” “Just wanted to ask a favor.” “For you? Anything.” “I wanted to know if you could check up on Trent next week.”
  • Last Stand in a Small Southern Town, by Aloysius (COMPLETE!): Jane and Daria rode their horses into the town and looked around the main business district. “This place is beginning to stink,” Daria said and sighed. Jane guided her horse towards the cantina and glanced at her partner in crime. “Amiga, this is Bolivia. They don’t have the sewage systems that the Eastern U.S. and Western Europe are famous for.” Daria glanced at her friend and shook her head. “That’s not what I’m talking about,” she said and pushed her hat back slightly. [Guess the crossover!]

And I Think It's Gonna Be a Long, Long Time...

It's Sir Elton John's birthday, and Helen has the perfect Sir Elton alter ego (with trademark glasses) to celebrate it. Obviously he was an MTV favorite. Well done! (Thanks to Pinhead for the image.)

Today was once the start of the New Year in many Western countries. A previous blog post has all the information on this curious fact. Since Lawndale might possibly be in Maryland, we also celebrate today as Maryland Day.

Finally, believe it or not, today is the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Wiki (as in DariaWiki), and we should tip our caps to the inventor.

  • Damn, by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): Things got more difficult as Tiffany ran for her life in the Overlook Hotel. After seeing creepy twins that looked like O'Neil and DeMartino, an elevator full of blood, and a naked Ms. Barch zombie, Tiffany thought there was something possibly odd going on. Still, none of that mattered now that Stacy had gone ax-crazy.
  • The Dream of the White Darkness, by jtranser (continued): As she sat on a bus stop bench, shoulders slumped in final despair, a soft raspy voice whispered a suggestion and an address. Looking up, she saw no one, but to her surprise, she felt an irregular object digging into the palm of her hand. Opening her fist, it revealed itself to be a silver denarius of the emperor Caligula resting in her palm. Again the whisperer spoke its previous words and told her to seek "The Barber." She decided she had no other alternative, and so Daria to the dark alley came.
  • Finn Morgendorffer 38: Fractures, by HolyGrail12007 (COMPLETE!): “Ummm... Daria, why do Mom and Aunt Rita and Aunt Amy fight like that?” “Fight like what?” “I mean, over me.” “Well, they do it because they disagree on everything. It’s just the way they are wired. They must disagree.” “That’s... stupid.” “Is it? That’s what we’ve been doing.”
  • Interdimensional Dust Up on Twelfth of May, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Daria Morgendorffer and Jane Lane turned the corner into the alley behind the Good Time Chinese restaurant, carrying a large gummy bear bag apiece. Jane's was obviously empty, and she approached the dumpster against the back wall with the intent of discarding the package. Just a step away, the receptacle rolled aside...
  • Lawndale's Finest—Action Stories #4: Power Struggle, by Jim North (continued): She heard more shouting from behind her, which put her teeth on edge. She turned again, this time to ask for some quiet so she could concentrate, when she noticed the reason for all the yelling. Val had arrived, slipped over the fence, and was running straight toward Jane with a determined look on her face. All Jane could do at first was goggle uselessly at the approaching blonde, but she recovered and tried to wave her off. "Val, get back! Now!" "Not until I get answers, SupergiiiiiiiiiRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"
  • NEWER! The Lions' Roar, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Just after lunch, an explosion rocked the school. Many of the students cried out in shock and fear while Ms. Li, principal of Lawndale High, smiled over her laced fingers, eyes like diamond chips in a show storm. "I knew this day would come."
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Ouch Time), by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETE!): [A scene from "Dye! Dye! My Darling" set to Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind." And it works!]

DariaWiki? I'd hit that!

We haven't given the incredible crew building DariaWiki its due of late, and we shall do so now. I confess things like DariaWiki make me think we have one of the best informed fandoms anywhere. There's not much that doesn't get by us. (The two images here are ones recently added to the 'wiki.)

First, the crew itself. A big hand goes out to Jim North, Brother Grimace, Quiverwing, Disco316, JPAGC, Roentgen, Heydrian, and Kchishol1970 for their fantastic work. You guys ROCK!!!

Curious about which DariaWiki pages are the most popular? The longest? The newest? Click and see.

Some of the webpages recently added or improved include the following in no special order whatsoever. Enjoy at your leisure.

Finally, help is needed in editing what's there, or in adding missing material. If you can add a wanted page, link up an orphaned page, or categorize a page, please do!

  • What Have You Done, Faux Jane? by NihilisticAmbition313 (Part 1): "I really didn't mean for it to go this far, or get this out of control." Quinn said barely above a whisper. The tears were now streaming from the redhead's eyes, but Daria was unmoved. She wanted Quinn to cry, to feel the pain that she had caused herself and her best friend.

  • The Best Is Yet to Be, by Ravynstone (COMPLETE!): Jane was trying very hard not to laugh. “You had a sex dream about Kevin Thompson?” Daria scowled at her best friend. “Yes.” “Wow. And I thought you were dark before, Daria.”
  • Cast Aside, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): Brittany Taylor was the only other survivor of the Princess Fairy. She had snuck off with her boyfriend, Kevin Thompson, for one of their patented makeout sessions. They found privacy in the ship’s only lifeboat, then found themselves adrift after the rope holding the boat to the ship snapped. Kevin tried to use the oars to catch up with the boat, but had accidentally dropped the oars over the side. Kevin then decided to signal the boat by standing up and lighting a match. When he tried this, he fell into the water. With the storm picking up and Kevin’s pads dragging him down, Brittany had just missed grabbing his hand before he sank for the last time.
  • collar, by Jim North (continued): "Oh wow," Quinn said once she was sure the waiter was out of hearing range. "Is that boy the most gorgeous thing ever or what? Ooh, that voice, and you could nibble on that butt for days!" (SFMB)
  • Finn Morgendorffer 35: The Fat Chick, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 2): “It’s Sandi!” Stacy interrupted. “Yeah, she’s not here today.” Finn remarked. That was not a bad thing, persay. “No, I mean she’s not here because of her leg. I heard from Rebecca who heard from Abby who heard from Brooke that Sandi broke it yesterday night.”
  • Folie à deux, by Charliefox2012 (Part 4): Evie scrutinized Daria intently, and then sighed lightly. “You’re actually worried that she’ll send me away again.” Daria hesitated before she gave her a small nod. “I’m pretty sure mom wasn’t kidding about the boarding school.” Evie gave her a small smile. “Mom is done sending me away,” she said confidently. “How do you know?” Daria inquired.
  • Onwards and Upchuck, by Shull Bitter (COMPLETE!): Charles Ruttheimer III gave a gentle growl-purr as he reached his locker, and the enchanting vision of loveliness standing before it. "Well, if it isn't the red hot, foxy younger Morgendorffer. What service may I offer?"

She twirled her still blonde hair, now in a single longer ponytail, around a finger. "But we actually knew each other from when we were little kids. Back in high school, we were both dating other people. After graduation, I never thought I'd see him again, but then came the attack on Old Los Angeles. I was a third semester freshman in college then. The government asked for all able bodied people to enlist so that they wouldn't need a draft, and, well, who's more able bodied than a cheerleader?
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "...And that's how your dad and I got together"), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): The twins' faces were awash in horror. "You hooked up at a key party?!"

Daria DVD Cover Art: Your Thoughts?

An early front cover art for the DVD was released yesterday. Subject to change, of course, but since it's everywhere by now, this is likely to be it! And this one looks quite real! What do you think?

EDIT: This is the finalized package art that Paramount Home Entertainment began circulating this afternoon (link). So this is it!

Check out Daria: The Complete Animated Series now on DariaWiki! Seven months since the release was confirmed and still no entry for the DVD? It was about time!

Can You Repeal the Laws of Gravity?

A mere 367 years ago, Sir Isaac Newton was born, he who figured out why apples hit you on the head, and Daria's Sick, Sad Life Planner chose to commemorate the event (see at right) with an announcement from historian Brittany Taylor about a little-known discovery with which Sir Isaac is rarely credited. You heard it first here.

After reading through Richard Lobinske's listing for 2009 Daria Visual Fanworks, I have picked out my personal favorites and named them on PPMB. Five artists produced so much superior work, it became impossible to pick anything they did. This group of masters includes: Jim North, MDetector5, Minx, Pinhead, and Vlora. I bow to you all and offer my humble thanks. You make this fandom shine.

A bow to Quiverwing, who achieved Cosmic Epic Win by fixing up more DariaWiki pages than anyone else from the last week of December until now. She is engaged in an immense project to classify all Daria fanfiction by year. Other DariaWiki fan-atics worthy of honor include Disco316, Boandpop, Nighthawk, Brother Grimace, Gouka Ryuu, Kem, RLobinske, Jim North, JPAGC, and Doggieboy. Thank you all!

(snip!)

Nineteen years ago today, the urban fantasy movie Edward Scissorhands was released in the USA. Brittany appears as Scissorhands in this remarkable alter ego from early in the Daria series. Click on the image to get the full-size view. (Thank you, Pinhead!) Loved that movie, sad and sweet all at once. It turned the Frankenstein theme on its head. Brittany's expression in the alter ego is perhaps the most amazing thing about it. Perfect, exactly like the movie.

It is time to thank those who have contributed so much to DariaWiki of late. Richard Lobinske, Brother Grimace, Doggieboy, Roentgen, Disco316, Jim North, Boandpop, and JPAGC have offered outstanding work and greatly expanded one of the core websites in this fandom. Yay! Visit the link above to see their works. U d0oDz r0oOL!!!

Two active & worthwhile non-PPMB threads to follow (and contribute to) have appeared. They are:Go, sign up, start typing, and enjoy.

Now for a few weird (but fun) things found on the Internet. First, Daria M. and Daria W., a bedroom comparison.

Next, something that might have been posted here before, but I don't recall it: 20 Classy High School Outcasts on Entertainment Weekly (ew.com). We are interested in #5.

Here is an extremely odd blog (the pot calls the kettle black) about every single thing in the universe with the name of Daria: Daria Derly Fun. Some screen captures I haven't seen before, too. Nice. Weird, but that's okay.

Someone has posted an avatar of Daria Morgendorffer from Second Life at the Facebook site. Nice!

The Daria/Harry Potter crossover issue has again arisen. Check it out. Interesting issue.

PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 19: It's Edgy, Dammit, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): “If only we could understand the wonders of the male brain,” said Jane. “Easy," said Daria. "Every other word is breasts."
  • Inner Universe, by Malakite (Part 1): The next day, Jane happened past a boy having locker trouble. As she walked by she said "Do you hear that? He hasn't got a prayer!" The boy glanced at her for a second, and then went back to trying to open his locker after her suddenly sympathetic, "Oh, bummer."
  • Reaped Out 2: Sickle Sad World, by Shnookies, the artist formerly known as Pinkminx (COMPLETE!): Daria glanced at the growing crowd of onlookers and tapped her foot impatiently. She didn’t see Jane approaching her from behind. “YOU!!!” Jane growled.
  • Reflections, by MidnightStorm (continued): Pizza Prince was crowded as usual as Daria slowly walked in. Workers, on lunch break, looked at her with curiosity and shrugged. Going back to their usual drawls on business and such, not caring about the lone teenager. Her usual booth with Jane was taken by two young workers arguing about some money loans. Finding an empty booth all the way at the end of the row, she sat down and gazed at the shiny metal table.
  • The Secret Life of Tammy Sloane, by MidnightStorm (Part 1): It was a quiet day in the Sloane household, something that was very rare and unusual. Mrs. Sloane, better known as Kay, was pleased at the energy in the house. Most of the time it was chaotic due to their eldest daughter's actions. She had scolded her hundreds of times, most of which were for pulling pranks on her teachers or humiliating a student.
  • Unnamed story (Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): When Jack Jeebs saw the woman in a black suit and round, dark glasses enter his pawn shop, his stomach tightened. "Good morning, Dee. How's it going?" he asked, hoping for the best. Agent Dee said, "Don't good morning me, Jeebs. I'm not in a good mood."
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "And Then Buffy Staked Edward."), by MidnightStorm (COMPLETE!): Edward looked around. The streets were deserted, something very unusual about the lively small town of Forks. Cars were parked on the side and seemed to gather dust. Looking toward the street he saw a lone figure leaning against a light post. Auburn hair blew in the wind. Edward walked toward the figure, curious to see if she knew anything about the town's disappearance.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "And Then Buffy Staked Edward."), by Raskolnikov (COMPLETE!): The formation of Cylon Raiders rose in the sky like a wave of metal. The hawklike ships headed towards the battered hull of the old battlestar....
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Once Bitten, Twice Shy), by Greystar (sequel COMPLETE!): "Jeez! Daria always gave me gas when she was alive, but this is ridiculous!"
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Once Bitten, Twice Shy), by Wraith (COMPLETE!): "Isn't she just perfect bait? In a manner of speaking. I mean, in the stories aliens or UMAs or whatever always go for the cute, timid, scared ones first, right? And predators always go for the weakest of the pack. Natural selection is a basic principle."

American Venus

This is quite the party day for film buffs. We start with showgirl, dancer, writer, fashion model, and movie actress Louise Brooks (at left), born 103 years ago. She was at one time amazingly famous and still has fan clubs. The MTV artists did an alter ego of Ms. Li as Ms. Brooks, in black and white like her many movies. (American Venus was one such film.)

The choice of model for the alter ego confounds me, as one alert superfan (Scissors) has pointed out that Jane Lane looks a heck of a lot more like Ms. Brooks than does Ms. Li. Well, whatever. The image of Ms. Li at right (thanks, Pinhead!) can be blown up to almost pin-up size by clicking on it, if you think you won't be visually or emotionally damaged by doing so.

Ms. Brooks, by the way, gave us the bobbed hairstyle. She made it popular, anyway, so Ms. Li and Jane Lane both owe her a debt. A quote from Ms. Brooks: Most beautiful dumb girls think they are smart and get away with it, because other people, on the whole, aren't much smarter.

We also honor the birthday anniversary of actress Veronica Lake, whose peekaboo hairstyle is so well and so often used by Sandi Griffin.

The dwarf planet Sedna was discovered six years ago today. It was mentioned only once in Daria fanfic, and then only in passing. A shame.

Last, but not at all least, Mrs. Johanssen probably knows that today is World Diabetes Day, which is something for us all to think about. Watch the sugar.

Looking for something to do while the MBs are offline? See what's new at DariaWiki. Maybe add a new page of your own. Couldn't hurt.

Nuuz Plash! PPMB & SFMB ARE BACK! HOORAY!

And now for the fanfics.

PPMB
  • Daria: Hunter--The Love Triangle, Jim North (continued): "Ready?" Quinn asked once they'd taken a few moments to soak in the ambiance. "Almost!" Stacy said cheerfully as she slipped on a pair of wide-lens glasses.
  • Finn Morgendorffer 14: Going Medieval, by HolyGrail2007 (Parts 1 and 2): “So the school is throwing a Renaissance Faire?” Finn wondered to his friends at the lunch table. The news had been delivered just before lunch. “Yeah. Doesn’t it sound stupid?” Jamie stated. Finn agreed. He had never been to one of those before, but it involved wearing those dreadful outfits in a time where people didn’t bathe very often. What could be so fascinating about that, aside from the primal, visceral pleasure of eating meat on a bone?
  • Reusably Complex, by Ajar (Part 7): "Consider if you will one Quinn Morgendorffer. A girl whose concern doesn't go far beyond the neatness of her hair, the painting of her face and the style of her clothing. This is a girl who has lived a charmed but empty life of popularity, boys, and diet soda. However, she's going to have to relive the memory of when her almost sister ruined it all in... The Twilight Zone."
  • Unnamed story, by Trscroggs (Part 1): If our hypothetical observer was capable of seeing more clearly through the fog, the would have been able to see that the shape was not running to something, but rather running from a much smaller shape. A hypothetical male observer might have stuck around long enough to try to see the pursuing figure before retreating. Anyone from outside of Lawndale would have described the pursuing figure as a teenage girl wearing a stylized Chinese-style dress far too skimpy and short to be decent. Anyone from Lawndale would have called the pursuing girl a magical girl.

Hamlet's not the only thing that has a skull in it

Halloween has been quiet so far here. It finished raining and there's nothing to do but wait for kids to come by this evening, if it's not too cool out. May as well post here to pass the time.

The Facebook Daria page is moving along quickly. Mostly just short bits posted by fans, but fun to read, like popcorn is fun to eat. Not a lot else going on elsewhere. SFMB is pretty dead except for political chat. FF.net has some updates, most of them PPMB stories. DariaWiki has had a lot of work done on it lately by Richard Lobinske, Disco316, Doggieboy, Brother Grimace, JPAGC, Vlademir1, and a host of others. Thank you all!

The bad news is that the loss of GeoCities sites dealt the fandom a real blow. We should watch the news for similar announcements of the closure of web-hosting services, particularly the free ones, and save all we can.

On a happier topic, let's see what we have in the way of new fanfiction online.

FF.net
  • Is It the Future Yet? by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "Are we sure we want to do this?" "Subject ourselves to another four or five more years of school? Why not? We're gluttons for punishment."
  • Take Me on the Floor, by MandeeMistress (Part 5): Daria stretched herself out on the Lane couch. She wasn't sure where the two siblings were; or if they were even home. She lay back and allowed her eyes to shut for a while.
PPMB
  • Chelsea, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): “Aw right! It’sh time for the main coursh! Daria, if thish doeshn’t turn you into a carpet cleaner, nuffing will!”
  • John Lane 43: We're on a Mission, Richard Lobinske (Part 4): "Today has been fantastic. I started off with a pedicure to absolutely die for, then a high-precision, organically herbal exfoliation cream treatment, a micromoisturizing facial, eyebrow waxing and then the best manicure of my life." "What did they do? Put you on the express train?"
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: Play a Game, by Psychotol (COMPLETE!): “WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION NUMBNUTS? DIDN’T YOUR MOMMY AND DADDY SHOW YOU ENOUGH AFFECTION WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?” [Guess the crossovers!]
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 21): Ryan introduced each person. “Well, this is Mack, Jodie's ex. That's Jane, a friend of Daria's. And she's Quinn, Daria's sister.” “I see,” said David, ignoring the greetings of the assembled. “So is it Mac like the Celtic surname prefix or Mack like the truck? Also, Daria means wealthy and Quinn means wise; you wouldn't happen to have a sister named Vivian, would you? Although, being teenagers I doubt you're early to bed or to rise. Hormones make people our age have a tendency for late nights. Of course, external factors like homework and television contribute as well. That's actually one of the arguments for reducing homework, that people learn better when they're well rested and homework discourages adequate sleep...”
  • A Trick or Treat III, by legendeld (first story COMPLETE!): “Now after the cemetery séance is over, we have to get to the ghost tour of Lawndale loading area. Last thing for the night is the haunted house.”

Welcome to the Inferno

Nine years ago this very day, the computer game Daria's Inferno was released. And there was much rejoicing. This game had some of the most bizarre images you could imagine. At left is Mr. DeMartino wearing a Jar-Jar Binks costume. At right is Ms. Li with a photo of her World's Greatest Disciplinarian Award. Below is an image of the fearsome road-rage trikers on Sick, Sad World. What more could you ask for? Well, there was Helen as the Bride of Frankenstein, Trike Girl, Mystic Spiral playing awful songs, Jane appearing in famous works of art and photography, some very nice shots of Daria's room, Lawndale High, and Shakespeare at a rock concert ("Mosh Ado About Nothing"). Ouch.

Bizarre actor/actress Divine was born 64 years ago today. Some of the MTV animation artists were fond of one of Divine's movies, Pink Flamingos, and created at least two alter egos based on that movie.

PPMB
  • Anti-Trope, by Pinkminx (Part 3): Dean wordlessly held out a folded piece of white paper and waited for the teacher to take it. Mr. DeMartino took the offering, opened the paper, then turned to address the class. “Class, it seems our new student, Dean Morgendorffer, has finally decided to grace us with his presence. Find a seat and sit down.”
  • Size Does Matter, by Blackhole (Part 42): “No, Trent. We both have to take some responsibility here. Four-eyes principle, you know?” Sometimes it defies description how much of a lazy bum you are. (FF.net) (SFMB)
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): Shaking her head at Brooke's obtuseness, Sandi gave instructions to Lucinda concerning Brooke's hair and makeup procedure: "Set the makeup applicator to Hooker, then shove her head into the bucket with the styling grenade. After that, when she comes back, we'll discuss clothing options."

Watch Me Pull a Rabbit Out of My Hat!

The creator of Rocky, Bullwinkle, Sherman and Mr. Peabody, Dudley Do-Right, and loads more was born today 89 years ago. Thank you, Jay Ward! Some Daria fanfics contain references to Mr. Ward and his cartoon legions. See if you can find them in the links below.

  • Finn Morgendorffer, by HollyGrail2007 (Part 2): “I mean it. Seriously, she’s ugly, she’s not popular, she’s as pleasant as a rabid...” Finn started to trail off. “My poor self-esteem,” Daria noted sarcastically. “And you wonder why it’s low.”

It's Daria in the Movies Day! Yay!

Today is the ninth anniversary of the MTV premiere of Is It Fall Yet? and the seventh anniversary of the DVD release of Is It College Yet? The infamous live Daria-Jane chat was also held online nine years ago today, a special event in which the show's characters (or so we were led to think) answered your questions, even the stupid ones. Those were the good old days, indeed.

Today is also the 126th anniversary of the loudest sound ever known in human history: not a Led Zeppelin concert, but the 1883 final eruption of Krakatoa, which blew an entire island to smithereens. Unfortunately it was an inhabited island. The lesson of Vesuvius is apparently a difficult one to learn: if you live near a mountain that makes noises, leave at once. You would think this was simple, but as recently as the eruption of Mount St. Helens, people still hadn't gotten it down correctly. Doesn't give you a lot of hope for the future, does it?

Don't know if I've mentioned this news story before, but there is a great little article on fictional TV shows that appear within TV shows. Sick, Sad World gets mentioned, but so do a lot of the other shows that would make great background bits in Daria fanfics. Does Upchuck watch Miss Sally's School Yard?

Brother Grimace, JPAGC, Disco316, Richard Lobinske, Doggieboy, and others have contributed enormous amounts of useful data to DariaWiki of late. Some of the pages new or modified include (in alphabetical order):
Enjoy!

FF.net
  • D Is for Daria, by Fringeperson (Part 1): Almost on cue, the doorbell rang. It was either Daria or Tom, and Jane was really hoping it was the former, she needed to get her head examined, and apart from Trent, Daria was the best person at it that she knew. Keeping her thrice-pierced ear pricked, she heard Trent loaf to the door and the hinges wail slightly as the barrier swung open to permit entry. “Oh, hey Tom. Janey's up in her room.”
  • Kisses and Dichotomies, by NoLogique (Part 1): Tom was fascinated by woman's makeup. Before Ruttheimer had thrown him into the basement and had tried to beat out the world from him, Tom would go to dive bars near the pier and see the pale faces of the cabaret ladies, clownish with their purple eyes and bright red lipstick.
  • Pigskin Caduceus, by HolyGrail2009 (Part 3): “Now, we’ve been introduced to two characters in Wuthering Heights: Heathcliff, and Cathy, his daughter-in-law. Who here can explain how the two of them are alike?” A few brains sitting in the front of their class raised their hands, but Mr. O’Neill looked towards the back of class, where all of us popular kids sat. “What about you, Jeffy?” he asked.
PPMB
  • The Awakening, by TAG (COMPLETE!): The lasagna that Daria’s mother often made for dinner had always had a metallic aftertaste, but it wasn’t until Daria was hunting for the salt very late one Friday night in July that she discovered another salt shaker in the top shelf of the cabinet behind the drinking glasses that no one ever used.
  • A Child's Book of Tom Sloane's Deaths, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): [I won't spoil this. Just read it. ]
  • Daria's Not So Little Helper, by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "So, what should we do to O'Neil today, amiga?" Jane asked. "Convince him that Michael Myers is just the product of a miss-spent youth?"
  • Farewell, My Cornholio, by Peapotmaster (Part 1): “I just wanted to tell you cretins that next week will be my last day here in Highland High,” said Daria. “Are you going to score?” Beavis asked. “No, buttmunch, Daria’s pregnant,” corrected Butt-Head.
  • Rolling the Dice, by Ajar (Part 4): Jane continued with a spot check. “The door flies open revealing what at first seems like a fairly average office space: One desk, one chair, one motivational poster and another door on the opposite side. In the first minute, or so, of entering the room you notice a residue, similar to the one you found earlier, around the poster, on the other door and all over the floor.” “Well,” said Quinn. “Since there's stuff around the poster and not on the poster, I'd guess that we should look behind the poster.” [Jane as a Dungeon Master? Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned....]
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): Berlin, Cabaret Wandersmann, August 1928: Dense swirls of blue smoke saturated the atmosphere, replacing the noxious oxygen that occupied the place during daylight hours.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Unwanted alien pets! Next, on Sick Sad World!), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Daria... this is a dream right? I'll wake up and Mom will be my mom and Dad will be my dad and no one will have died. I'll be hanging out with my friends pretending you're not my sister."
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Unwanted alien pets! Next, on Sick Sad World!), by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): Daria folded her arms. "My own daughter. I'm a little surprised at you. Why did you get a pet if you can't take care of it?"
  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Brains for Rent), by Tsrcroggs (Part 1): The public did not take well the idea of powerful meta-humans with a literal case of multiple-personality disorder. Laws had been enacted placing any known Oversoul into Facilities for their "care and treatment." Daria was the tenth Oversoul to be identified and the fifth to enter this particular Facility at the age of 13.
  • Warm Colors, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Daria sat on the end of her unmade queen-sized bed, flipping through the channels as Jane swept her brush through a dense tangle of colors rioting across her canvas. It was one of her abstracts, brilliant red and green swirling into the center. The effect was that of a person being sucked down into the center of a vortex.
