Take a Look, It's in a Book!

Daria is suggesting that you celebrate Read a Book Day, but not so much for the enrichment it will provide and more for the hope that it will encourage you to leave her alone. I think it goes without saying that Daria and indeed most of the Daria fandom will be participating in this one, today and every other day as well.

However, try not to use reading as an excuse to put off any important tasks, because it's Fight Procrastination Day! I'll definitely fight procrastination...later on.

I guess you could call me lazy, but that's okay because it's also National Lazy Mom’s Day and I qualify! I don't think Helen will be joining me for this one, though.

Don't Put Off Reading a Book!

Daria's clearly enjoying Read a Book Day, although how today differs from any other day for her is anyone's guess. Spoiler alert, Daria: the whale did it!

I just hope she isn't reading a book in order to delay some other activity, like writing or homework or applying for scholarships, because today is also Fight Procrastination Day. As far as Trent is concerned, that battle was lost before it even began.

Books AND a Day Off? Count Me In!

You might think that Daria is reading a book to celebrate Read a Book Day, but that's the kind of thing a joiner would do. No, Daria is reading a book in order to actively refuse to observe Fight Procrastination Day! What's she procrastinating? Your guess is as good as mine.

Of course, many of us can feel free to procrastinate today because it's Labor Day and lots of people have the day off. I suggest enjoying the free time with a book.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Dream, by ladyevil (part 4): "At the campsite, Jake was attempting to put up a tent while Helen dug a campfire pit nearby. Jake grunted as he struggled with the tent, culminating in a frustrated scream."

  • Psychic Refugee No More 2.0 (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "A few weeks after Jane headed back to New York, Trent had considered himself properly settled in his new home."

You Know What to Do! Don't Wait!

Daria looks like she's celebrating Read a Book Day, but that's just a clever ruse. See, for Daria that's every day, so in reality she's failing to celebrate Fight Procrastination Day! Unless reading is the task she's refusing to put off until later, in which case I have a splitting headache already from trying to follow my own logic. Never mind; I'm going to go read a book.

Fanfic Update!
  • All's Fair, by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "Kevin Thompson knew that he was a lot of things but smart wasn't one of them."

  • Coffee, by Zetor (part 2i): "Stacy's laughter broke Daria out of her thoughts. 'Small talk is kind of hard when you've just shared something so heavy, huh?' Daria chuckled, relieved Stacy was having the same issue. 'It doesn't help that we went to high school together.'"

  • Daria's Creepy Dates, by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "There was a knock at the front door. 'Daria, your date's here!' Jake called out. He quickly navigated to his camera app and started recording a video; after all, this was his kiddo's very first date, and he wanted to have a record of it forever."

  • Harry Potter Morgendorffer, by Meester_Lee (part 27): "Roger was still awestruck by not only meeting Albus Dumbledore, learning that Helen was The Boy Who Lived's guardian and meeting the head of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, but he did manage to apport HJ, Helen, and himself back to the Alley."

  • Is It Over Yet?, Part I, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Quinn and Lindy are having pizza and catching up. Lindy said 'Thanks for taking me out for pizza. What's the occasion?' Quinn said 'I just wanted some one on one girl time with someone other than Daria, Stacy or Sandi for a change. What have you been up to lately?'"

  • Jay Lane, by ST91 (parts 1 - 3): "Driiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin!!! Relentless the alarm rang, waking Jay Lane out of his sleep. Slowly and reluctantly, the 16-year-old boy opened his eyes." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Second Chance for Love, by David Falkayn (part 21): "'Once I got home, I parked myself under the shower and stayed there for at least an hour.' Jodie grumbled as she and Mack sat with the Barbies at their usual lunch table."

  • The Things We've Learned So Far, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Esra pulled open the uncommonly huge, washing machine-sized bag of popcorn down in the middle of the commons room as several of her fellow Legion Academy students dove in."

  • The Truth Seeker, by RĂ©mi (part 11): "Casa Lane, Jane's room. Quinn is still flailing her arms angrily at Trent, without much result. Trent is busy protecting himself. Jane sighs. Jane : Okay, that's enough, Quinn."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 147): "'Yeahhhh!!' It was a four alarm fire, or at least you would have thought so."

Read Any Good Books about Procrastination?

Tom's not really enjoying Read a Book Day, but he'd better stick to it. Today is also Fight Procrastination Day, so he shouldn't put off reading it. Trent probably hates both of these holidays, because he can't go into bookstores and I suspect procrastination is one of his favorite hobbies.

Fanfic Update!
  • Camped Out, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Daria and Jane were reminiscing about old Sick, Sad World episodes when Daria abruptly stopped talking or even moving. Jane took a few steps before she noticed, then turned to look curiously at her friend."

  • Eating Speaks Louder Than Words, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Jane Lane's blue eyes danced with joyous mischief. 'You know that Das Kolonel is probably going to have words with you about this, right?'"

  • The Game, by dmsfanman (part 1): "Daria picked up her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. Her last class of the week had ended just an hour ago."

  • Jane – The Green Fairy (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Jane Lane's heart beat faster in happy anticipation as she turned up the sidewalk to the Schloss Morgendorffer her backpack full of artist supplies bouncing in rhythm with heart and jaunty step."

  • No, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "Daria liked to joke about Helen's lack of parenting; this was obvious to everyone in the Morgendorffer household besides Jake. Truthfully, Helen could not blame her eldest daughter (and from ever parenting magazine she had ever read, she knew blaming her daughter for it would be a serious sign of unhealthy mother/daughter dynamics, which just wouldn't do)."

  • Party at 111 Howard (Iron Chef: Party at Casa Lane), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "'Jodie Landon.' 'Dani Moreno.' 'I haven't seen you at Lawndale.' 'I'm at Lawndale State, Freshman,' Dani said."

  • Perception, by Princess_Pasta (part 8): "The faint sound of the evening news filtered in through the kitchen while Charlene Thompson worked on scrubbing burned spaghetti out of her good pan."

  • Rude Awakening ep 15: Paintballing Your Troubles Away!, by DIsaac (part 3): "(The WHUB Team is all on the bus to the hotel. For the first time… some they are in are in close quarters with co-workers and their teammates from channel 5 which make for some weird conversations.)"

  • Somnium (Iron Chef : Jane doesn't forgive Daria), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "How many years had it been.... four or maybe five years since she left Lawndale for the Art Colony. Jane had rarely been back since then mainly to visit Trent."

  • The Switcher, by Sureia (part 1): "One thing that never ceased to surprise Jane was the number of creative ways in which life could bring you low. It shouldn't have been surprising, especially after spending any amount of time under the same room as Summer, Wind, Penny and Trent, but it did."

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Sureia (COMPLETE!): "Doubt was the curse of the scientist, Jake thought, watching his breath mist in the cold, night air. Doubt that an experiment was valid, doubt that the right questions were being asked, doubt that anyone would take him seriously, and doubt..."

  • When A Stranger Calls (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'And it is in these trying times that we must remember to stand together. There will be grief counselors here throughout the week to help you sort out your feelings in the face of such an awful tragedy'."

Got Any Books on Procrastination?

Jodie's all set for Read a Book Day, because Jodie always does what's expected of her. She does seem to be enjoying the book, though, so I'll leave her to it.

This is also Fight Procrastination Day, so if there's a book you've been putting off reading then today's the perfect day to start it. Unless you're only reading because there's something else you should be doing and you don't want to.
