Long Live the Jake!

Jake is certainly not looking amused for the anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation on this day in 1838. In his defense, that outfit doesn't look at all comfortable and I'm sure he doesn't feel very confident in his ability to rule an entire nation.

Daria, meanwhile, might consider finally getting her ears pierced for International Body Piercing Day, unless her belly button experience soured her on the whole idea. Just as long as, whatever choice she makes, she does it for her own reasons and not to impress some guy.

It was on this day in 2000 that the episode "Psycho Therapy" first aired. It's a fan favorite not only because of the legendary role-playing exercise, but Tom's viral-before-viral-was-a-thing butt wiggle on Jane Cam. Just think; if things had gone differently he might be an influencer by now!

Meanwhile, in 1998, Daria and Jane hosted the "Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown." It's exactly as snarky as you think, too.

She Could Have Gone For the Not-Uvula, Too!

Check out Daria's new accessory for International Body Piercing Day! It was that or pierced brains, and I'd hate to see the rash for that one.

Also on this day in 1998, MTV aired the Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown, hosted by Daria and Jane. The animation was limited, but the jokes were 100% pure Daria and Jane classic snark.

Finally, the episode "Psycho Therapy" first aired on this day in 2000. So many great scenes, from Jane's suggested answers for the survey questions to Quinn's past-life regression, but my favorite will always be the family role-playing exercise.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 6): "The rest of Daria’s day was a nightmare. Rumors had spread that she was dating Ethan, and he had been bothering her all day."

  • Circle of Strife, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Angie was having another ghostly visitation. This one was her recently deceased ex-boyfriend Bryce. This encounter was proving to be a disappointment." (Part 9)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 17): "Nymphadora Tonks, Hogwarts graduate and prospective Auror trainee with the Ministry’s DMLE, shifted her foot as she waited for the port-key that would take her across the Atlantic."

Pierced Brains, Anyone?

I know exactly how Jane feels right now. I mean, Daria celebrating International Body Piercing Day? When she surely knows that it's just a holiday thought up by corporations to sell more body piercing-related greeting cards? Wow, what a sell-out.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Psycho Therapy," which aired on this day in 2000. My favorite scene from this one is the role-playing exercise. So much disaster, so quickly.

Pierced Brains, Anyone?

Daria's showing off her tribute to International Body Piercing Day, and Jane looks distinctly unimpressed about it. No need to worry, though: I'm sure E.T. and his magic healing powers will take care of that soon.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Psycho Therapy," which aired on this day in 2000. No one got pierced, but a lot of egos got punctured in that one. That group role-playing session...damn.

Counseling and Countdowns

Ready for a vacation? Why not try The Retreat, introduced on this day in 2000 in the episode "Psycho Therapy." We got to see all kinds of insights into the Morgendorffer family, not to mention Tom Sloane's previously-unknown dance skills. Anyone wonder if he still gets fan mail from those inmates?

Also on this day in 1998, Daria and Jane hosted the MTV special "Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown." During the show, they make a comment about Freud, who was the founder of the field of psychotherapy. Coincidence, or--yeah, coincidence. Still kinda cool, though.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Dinkley, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "They were standing just outside the Mystery Machine with the side door slid open. 'You sure were smart to figure out all that stuff about "old man McGee" being the one to swindle those old people out of their money Velma.'"

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 9a - 9e): "The implosion of Mrs. Crush's ballet class did not mean an end to the damage done to psyches and friendships since Miss Genevieve's sacking. If there weren't as many physical injuries as Daria's knee, there were plenty of bruised feelings and damaged friendships." (Part 9b) (Part 9c) (Part 9d) (Part 9e)

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 10): "Gary shifted uneasily from side to side. Guarding the local Fox affiliate was usually boring - everyone knew what happened when someone attacked one of the Donald's pet agencies - but he'd heard about that whole team disappearing a week ago."

  • A Friendship Past, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'You look great tonight,' he openly admired how the soft green of the top that she wore brought out the fleck of gold in her brown eyes."

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 28): "It should have gone without saying that Daria did not like Mondays, but, then; did anyone? Did anyone out there spend their entire weekend thinking 'I can't wait for this to be over! Bring on Monday!'?"

  • Stolen and Forced Paths: 1986: November, by macross (part 1): "'Use your Fucking turn signal you stupid bastard!' Jake Morgendorffer screamed out the window of his '79 Caprice station wagon."

  • Thoughts about Daria, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1.1): "'Did we move?' Daria asked. Jake recognized her sarcasm. He remembered what his wife had said the previous night."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (part 17): "Darlene was walking through the old streets of the town, looking through the decrepit storefronts. The devastating combination of the war and the plague turned Drammarstadt into a ghost town."

The Royal Ranter

Jake's enjoying a little crossdressing today, perhaps because it's the anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation in 1838. I'm pretty sure Queen Victoria was more level-headed than Jake was, but Jake also tends to be more easily amused.

Speaking of Jake's tendency toward hysterics, today is also the day "Psycho Therapy" first aired in 2000. Fifteen years later and I'm sure Jake is no closer to resolving his stress (or lack thereof) issues.

"Oh, the lack of humanity."

Today is the anniversary of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, an infamous tragedy that's notable within fandom because of the poster adorning the inside of Daria's locker.

Also, happy birthday to the late Sigmund Freud, born on this day in 1856. Without Freud, we would not have psychotherapy. Without psycho therapy, we would not have "Psycho Therapy." Without that episode, we would not have gotten that awesome role-playing scene.

Today's essay question: Does Jake's milk obsession have its roots in some deep-seated trauma related to his mother? Explain.

Jake is Not Amused, Either

Today is the anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation in 1838. Jake's doing his best, but I'm sure I've seen better impersonations of the monarch.

More recently, today is also the 12th anniversary of the episode "Psycho Therapy," which was great just for the role-playing sequence alone. And who could forget Tom's fifteen minutes of fame as a butt wiggler? (In fairness, it was easier on the eyes than O'Neill's ever was.)

Fanfic Update!
  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 12), by oni (part 1): "The days flew off the calendar and before long it was Thanksgiving. It was morning time at the Griffin household and Sandi was helping her mother prepare food, since she didn’t need the crutches anymore. Things may have changed for the better between her mom and her, but Linda’s temper went off for other reasons now..."

  • Careful What You Wish For (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Daria placed the phone in the cradle and slowly pulled her hand back. She stared at the construct of plastic and metal for a moment, then swung her legs up onto her bed and flopped back against the pillow. Her eyes strayed to the crack in the ceiling, the stories she and Jane would fabricate to go with the changing shapes in the plaster. But she had not seen Jane outside of school for weeks."

  • Daria Blade: Book One, by peapotmaster (part 1): "'You’re going to pay for what you and your goons did to my family, you son of a bitch,' Daria got up, as she rose using her sword. She had a glare at Axel, as she roared at him, charging at him at full speed."

  • Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by project pegasus: "Starfire: Friend Raven, this is a mistake. You cannot do this! Raven: (ashamed of herself) We don’t have any other choice. Starfire: There is always choice! The Titans were formed to fight people like Mr. Cashman! He stole Miley Cyprus’ money!"

  • Family New, by RLobinske (part 6): "Mr. Vitale said, 'However, she never settled on guardian for the children. This is a little awkward, but she was uncomfortable with recommending either you two or Jake's sister. Helen had contacted a couple called the Yeagers, but they never gave a clear answer.' Rita and Amy looked at each other for several moments. Amy then said, 'I suppose we deserved that.'"

  • Family Reunion, by januense (part 7): "'Hey, uncle G!...' greeted Trent '... good morning. Why are you carrying your special occasion artillery?' He stepped into the room, crossing his arms, putting the huge gun in the notch of the left one, as if he was holding a newborn baby. 'Well... there are some annoying little pests in the house. I wanted to set some traps, but I changed my mind... we didn't have a little family hunt in ages, so we're gonna eradicate them in the old fashioned way... nothing's better than some indoor sport and family bonding.' he loudly exclaimed, grinning."

  • Full of Esteem (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Timothy O'Neill cackled with glee at the heavily pregnant figures strapped to their pretty lacy pink beds, reminding himself once more that he was doing the right thing by holding all of them against their will."

  • Getting to be One with Nature (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "As Jane vomit the contents of last night'd dinner due the site that was before them. Her friend , Daria just mumbled to her self 'I know I can't unseen this but dammit I really do. Where the hell is Ms. Li when you need her?'"

  • The Hearts Within, by neonhomer (part 4): "I walked over to the table and sat down. 'Where’s mom?' 'She’s on the phone with Stacy’s mother.' Dad said as he folded his paper and set it down. He lowered his voice. 'Hear she didn’t take it too well when she found out.' 'No. She didn’t.' I told him. 'I could have sworn for a moment, that mom wanted to hit her.'"

  • Improbability (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have-Now Springtime Fresh), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "'THE GODS HAVE FORSAKEN US!' Angela Li screamed into the PA system as pandemonium consumed Lawndale High."

  • Little Green Cap, by peetz5050 (part 4): "'Well... at least I can discuss discussing the... issue... if that makes any sense. I know what happened to me, I remember it... but... I don't dwell on it. When I let it I see... faces... and feel...' Her breathing was becoming labored and she was tensing up as she spoke, her knuckles whitening on her clenched fists."

  • Misery Chick No More (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Daria was frozen in sheer horror at what stood on her doorstep, spinkles of soil fell off the slightly decomposed figure as he stared at her with his dead and yet horribly animated eyes."

  • Operation Glitterberries, by BF110C4 (part 19): "About the only things that gave the room the feeling of being lived in rather than holding someone there were the different posters pinned to the walls, even if they were as morbid as the rest of the room, with ‘Kafka’s Metamorphosis’ sharing a wall with an old poster of a half dug skeleton from an archaeological site; incongruously there was a white sock incongruently sewed to the wall. The models of a realistic human heart and a piece of cheese from all the possible things completed the look."

  • Quinn and Her Little Brother (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Quinn glared at the sleeping infant in it's cradle, the mere existence of a baby brother was enough to make the world seem like a cruel, dark place."

  • Sexy Daria: Sex and the Mall, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "And now that she had spotted him by himself in the hallway, it was moment of truth time. Once she had caught his eye, his gorgeous sapphire blue eyes, all those rehearsed lines flew out the window and she was forced to improvise. 'Uh... Hi Ronnie.' Scarlett said lamely, it was the best she could do with short notice."

  • Toilet Humor (IC: Hell is Crossed People), by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): "It was hard for her to breathe. Admittedly, she had always thought before that Highland was a living Hell, but now...Now she realized what Hell truly was. Daria sat back down on the floor. Of all the places there was for her to die, it was going to be in the bathroom in the teachers' lounge. And of all the ways to die, it would be at the hand of those monsters. Why didn't she just give up and die while she had the chance?"

  • Unnamed story (IC: How did Daria end up in Hot Topic's Torture Room?), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked suspiciously at the outfit that Trent was holding in his hands. 'You want me to try that on?'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked over at Quinn. 'Now let me get this straight, you were walking home from the mall when he offered you a ride home?'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "It was 11:30 pm, and Daria was finally finished with her history paper on the Constitution. With that out of the way, she could turn to her secret passion - RPF, or 'real person fiction'."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Monday, Monday), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Charles turned to the waiting crowd, grinning. 'What lucky lady is next in line for Monsieur Charles and his Magic Fingers?'"

Boxing...Stacy?

Stacy is in her boxing gear to commemorate the infamous boxing match between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield that took place on this day in 1997. In the match, Tyson bit off part of his opponent's ear. Check out Stacy's game face there--hope Sandi is wearing earmuffs.

Today is also the day the episode "Psycho Therapy" aired in 2000. There were lots of great moments in that one, including Quinn's regression into Cleopatra, Jake and the milk, and Helen's "Quinn...well, I can't even think about what happened there, not right now." Not to mention Tom shaking it for all the world to see!

Finally, happy 85th birthday to Mel Brooks, born on this day in 1926. I know there are at least a handful of Brooks fans in Daria fandom, so let's all wish Mr. Brooks a good one. I was going to pick out a quote from one of his movies to go here, but there are just so many hilarious lines that I can't choose. If you like, post your favorite in the comments!

Quiet Ivy and Loud Family fights

A decade ago today, we were treated to "Psycho Therapy," in which we learn a lot about Helen we already knew or suspected. We then learned Daria was okay with her mother and father exactly as they were. She knew she couldn't change them. Daria even saved the family from disintegration. Jake and Helen hugged and all was back to normal.

This was definitely not the season 1 & 2 Daria. All that talk about shooting her mother, then she does something noble and sweet. Wonder if Daria's kids will be as kind to her. Best line from Daria: "Gee, look at the time. 1984 all ready." Loved Quinn's Cleopatra moment, too.

Most interesting line was from Helen in the parking lot, to Daria: "Look what I've done to my family! Your father feels completely neglected and resentful. I've shut you out so many times, you don't even try to talk to me, and Quinn... well, I can't even think about what happened there, not right now. Oh my God, Daria! You didn't hear that!" Oooooh, boy.

A dozen years ago today, we were treated to Daria and Jane as our hosts in MTV's "Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown." ("My arms! I can't move my arms!") The winning video was Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." Those were the days when Daria came on MTV on Monday nights at 10:30 p.m. EST. I missed it all, didn't have MTV at the time. Dang.

Happy birthday today to legendary movie-man Mel Brooks, who turns 84 and hasn't quit working once. Can never say enough good things about his stuff. Love it. Stay tooned.

PPMB

  • Daria/Dorian, by LadieT (continued): Ms. Li looked at her watch. The Morgendorffers were due at any moment. She thought about the conversation she'd had with Helen a few days earlier. She took out both sets of permanent records she had been keeping since Daria first arrived at the beginning of her sophomore year, then quickly scanned them to make sure the grades were identical. She then began to contemplate about to do with the soon-to-come windfall.
  • Daria: Hunter 6—Infectious, by Jim North (continued): "Okay, hate to burst your bubble, pal, but we cut through two patrols on our way down here like scissors through paper," Jane said. "Send everything you've got. We can handle it." "Hmm, yes," the Engineer mused. "Even without the help of Axl and his favorite little toy, your guns do give you a bit of an advantage. So let's just fix that, shall we?"
  • NEW! Farther Up the Loop, by Brian Taylor (COMPLETE!): "I would like to show President Sloane my gratitude for his support during the recent unpleasantness, but I'm afraid my constituents have been quite vocal that they won't stand for his brand of—" "Aw, that's cute." "He's been listening to his constituents again."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 51: A Matter of Trust, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): “Dude, it’s not like that!” Finn protested with more than a little bit of annoyance. “She’s my girlfriend, and we’re not going to be those long-distance phone call relationship things. I’m going up to see her.” “So it’s just a visit?” Jeffy teased. “You’re not going to do any of the things you were bragging out with her for a week after the State game.” “No! Well, well, yes, but this isn’t some two-hundred mile booty call. I’m going to see a good college that my girlfriend has intimate knowledge of.” “Heh, intimate knowledge,” Jamie teased.
  • General Semantics, Private Angst, by Gwrtheyrn (continued): The young woman's eyes flicked open before the rest of her body could move. Where was she? She couldn't place it. A carpeted floor, somewhere. But she knew that almost-taste at the back of her throat. Drae. In powder form. Her clothes felt intact, which at least rendered one classic usage of Drae less probable. (Daria/World of Null-A)
  • In the Loop, by Brian Taylor (COMPLETE!): "I'm giving this to Jane." "Please, don't. Not the Red Death."
  • Kabti-Ilani-Marduk, by Malakite (Parts 1 and 2): Jane Lane, Artist Extraordinaire, listened with half an ear to what that mega-bitch Daria (as if her ability to stuff her bra made her special) and her little lesbian toady Sandi were saying half a table away as they ate lunch. [NEW! Part 2: Linda Griffin listened to that self-satisfied, fat-chested Helen Morgendorffer (what kind of name was that anyway?) gloat about how smart her four-eyed little rugrat in the vomit green shirt was with a growing sense of irritation. "Oh yes, Daria is more than ready to begin kindergarten this year. In fact, I'm a little worried that she may find it too simple." Linda was torn between the urge to just nod, indulging this tiresome narcissist in her delusions, and her desire to argue and snipe and take the ludicrous bitch down a peg. As always, the second impulse won out.]
  • NEW! Legion of Lawndale Heroes Special: Tokusatsu Team Up! by LSauchelli (continued): On the other side of the world, the town of Angel Groove was under attack. A lone Power Ranger was defending it from a monster that looked like it had escaped from an episode of Sailor Moon. It was a six foot woman with blue skin and tires all over her body.
  • A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (Part 14): It was the smile that Kevin noticed when he arrived. “Whoa, Daria! What's got you in such a good mood?” Daria buried the smile and affected her flattest monotone. “What are you talking about, Kevin?” “Well, now you look more like Daria, but you were just smiling there. I've never seem you smile like that, not even when we lived through that hurricane in junior year.” “Don't worry, Kevin,” Daria deadpanned. “I promise you'll never see it again.” “Why not?” Kevin asked. “You're so much prettier when you smile.” He winced as he realized what he'd just said. “Sorry, Daria. Please don't yell at me.”
  • NEW! Raft College: The First Year, by rglovejoy (Part 12): The seminar room for Prof. Federova's Western Civilization class was a spartanly appointed classroom in the second floor of the Bradford Building. There were no advanced teaching aids; the walls held just a blackboard and a world map (Mercator projection). That was all that Prof. Federova needed. She had a sharp tongue and was not afraid to use it on students who came to class unprepared or who employed sloppy thinking. Daria was the first to arrive.
  • NEW! Run on Tommy—Run On..., by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Hi, I'm—" Jodie said. Tommy turned to her and looked her up and down. Behind him, the crates suddenly began to shift. "Watch out!" Jodie screamed as she grabbed his arm and led him forward. The crates just missed crushing them, however. "You must be Jodie! They told me you where smart, no one mentioned how beautiful you were." Jodie was taken back by his comment. She looked over at the crates. Tommy seemed unfazed. "Yes, I'm Jodie Landon, a student representative for Lawndale High," she said as she offered her hand to shake his. "I hear your going to make a speech about me." Jodie just looked back at the crates. "Well—yes, but..." Jodie said nervously. Something seemed off about this guy.
  • Sleepwalker, by Jim North (continued): "Oh, hello, Stacy! How are you this evening?" The sickly-sweet tones of Timothy O'Neill's voice hit Stacy's ears like sticky tree sap. She walked up the shallow stairway to the entrance of Nick's, sighed, and said, "I'm fine, Mr. O'Neill, thanks for asking." "Oh my goodness!" he said, severely distressed at her tone. "It doesn't sound like everything is fine! Is there anything I can do for you? You know, I was just reading about this great form of therapy that involves banging a drum while talking about your problems and innermost thoughts. I think I can find a drum if—"
  • That Infernal Nonsense, by Ajar (continued): "My fault. I forgot I had to tell you about that verse. The next verses are six lines in an A-A-B-C-C-B rhyming scheme, so chime in after the sixth line or, if you forget, the third rhyme."
  • When Tommy Goes Lurching Home, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): The first thing Tommy noticed was that he was stuck in a coffin: pitch-black, enclosed, a prison. The second was that it was f***ing boring down there. I mean, dude, they could've buried him with some porn or something, right? What's a guy supposed to do down there? Screw this man, Tommy Sherman is getting out.
  • Winners and Losers, by Malakite (COMPLETE!): Jodie Landon's gaze was fixed on the back of the auditorium as she finished the unpalatable saccharine speech she'd just been forced to deliver with her introduction of the god-awful egomaniac jackass it had been written for. "And now, without further adieu, the man of the hour—Tommy Sherman!" There was smattering of somewhat polite applause as Tommy took his place at the podium, and Kevin Thompson wailed out in glee.

ReAl LiFe strikes again

Hey, there. More Daria postings to come soon. Had to take a short break. Talk amongst yourselves. Here's a topic: when Jane gave Daria the "answers" for the psychological test Daria took in "Psycho Therapy," was Jane trying to have Daria committed, fearing Daria would steal Tom? Cite Biblical verses to support your thesis.

No More Foaming at the Mouth for You!

I've always wanted to sleep upside-down
and spread rabies.

—Jane Lane, "Psycho Therapy"

Today is World Rabies Day, established in hopes of eliminating rabies forever (as has pretty much happened to smallpox). Vaccinate your pets! Make the world safe for dog lovers! Yeah, well, cats and bats and other stuff, too, but mostly dogs, 'cause they're our friends. Cats just enslave you to do their bidding and bats drink your blood and the other stuff is just icky. Dogs rule.

Today is also the 100th anniversary of the birth of Al Capp, creator of L'il Abner & co. Mr. Capp created the character Sadie Hawkins, for whom Sadie Hawkins Day is often declared in high schools. The only Daria fanfic to have Sadie Hawkins Day featured in it is "All in a Rowe," by MMan. The only Daria fanfic to have a Holiday Island High character named Sadie Hawkins is "Acts of Cupidity," by Disco316. Congratulations!

A Few More Ideas For A Slow Sunday

What if this scene from "Psychotherapy" wasn't just Quinn's imagination?

Quinn (hypnotized) – Oh Caesar, please don’t poison me. I could love you, but those togas make your butt look so big.

Daria – Oh, God.

Quinn – And what’s with that headband? Olive leaves are so BC.

Jean-Michel – Looks like she’s experiencing a past-life regression.

Daria – You’ve got the regression part right.

Quinn – Help, someone help me! Some king wants kill me for loving some soldier or something before I’ve had time to pass on my secret formula for eye liner. Oh Caesar, ya big idiot! Do something!

Daria – Impressive grasp of history, but she forgot the part where they all board Noah’s Ark for a Caribbean cruise.

Jean-Michel – Daria, I was afraid you had some rather deep-seated problems. But I must say, you’re remarkably well adjusted…considering.

Quinn – You’d think someone would’ve invented eye liner before me. But no, I, Cleopatra, have to come up with all my beauty products on my own. Oh, what a hard life.

(Daria stands)

Daria – At the count of ten, I will snap my fingers, and hopefully remember none of this.

Or in "I Don't":

Daria - Actually, I'm in the witness protection program. The Morgendorffers were kind enough to take me in after my real family was exterminated by the mob.

Instead of just Daria, the entire Morgendorffer family arrived in Lawndale as part of the Witness Protection Program. Maybe they had to flee Highland after their cover there had been lost (probably because of Beavis and Butthead, no doubt).

Or from "That Was Then, This Is Dumb":

Willow - (clasps Daria's hands) You have a very old soul.

Daria - It just looks mature for its age.

Daria does have an old soul... she's immortal

Mental in the Morning (Afternoons Optional)

"Psycho Therapy" first aired nine years ago today. This episode opened some cans of worms that were never fully dealt with later (especially the comment Helen makes about not knowing what went wrong with Quinn, which Helen has alluded to in earlier episodes—perhaps Quinn reminds Helen too much of her sister Rita).

What was interesting to me was Daria's pep talk to her mother near the episode's end, where it appears Daria is attempting to salvage the family in the disastrous aftermath of the family role-playing over dinner. Did Daria really believe her mother was committed to the family, or was she making it up so her mother would feel better? Daria has made many previous comments to the effect that Helen is uninvolved in the family, or at best is making a superficial effort to appear involved. It might be that Daria, who obviously recognizes her family's grave dysfunctions, prefers the familiar turmoils of dysfunction to the unknown terrors of real change. As the shrinks would call it, she is enabling, helping to perpetuate destructive behaviors. Which I guess is what family is all about, isn't it?

On the good side, at least we got Jane-Cam. Essays and writings on "Psycho Therapy" can be found here, here, and here.

On PPMB, S.C. has more to show of his Cast Portrait (WIP) masterwork. Mr. Orange has discovered some nice Daria fan art on a French website. Wouter has issued an Iron Chef challenge for artwork showing the children of the show's main characters.

Derek wonders if it is possible to have an Internet domain called ".daria" (thanks to a new rule passed by ICANN). I am totally jiggy with it.

The discussion thread on Irredeemable Daria Characters goes longer by the day. Is there such a thing as evil in Daria's universe, or just many shades of gray? You decide.

Brother Grimace and Doggieboy are going great guns on DariaWiki. Now 1,877 articles. Thank you!
