He Caught a Fish THIS Big!

Mack has had a very successful Go Fishing Day, although the best part was probably being able to spend some quiet time away from Kevin. Although I'm not a fan of fishing, personally--yuck--I hope anyone who does enjoy it gets some time out at the water today.

If you don't feel like cooking your catch, that's great because it's also Sushi Day! Just don't go to Tokyo Toby's, or as it's known in medical circles, the worm factory.

Poor Jake learned that lesson the hard way in "My Night at Daria's," which aired on this day in 2001. I think he'd rather go through the ordeal all over again, though, than face Daria after catching Tom sneaking out of the house. Poor awkward Jake.

Fanfic Update!
  • Dare I Say Sisterly, by janendaria4life (COMPLETE!): "Quinn sauntered her way inside as she entered the Morgendorffer household."

  • Spider Quinn 09 A Part of the Journey, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Daria arrived at the theater in the Lexus. 'Why did you come again?' Daria asked."

Go Fish!

Jake's not having a great International Sushi Day, but given his experience at Tokyo Toby's I would have thought he be relieved. All things considered, he'd be better off being sushi than eating it.

In fact, let's not forget that his last experience with sushi came with the double shock of Daria and Tom's night together in "My Night at Daria's," which aired on this day in 2001. Of course, it turned out to be nothing serious...unlike the parasite. Ew.

If you intend to have sushi, maybe you'd better catch your own, especially because today is Go Fishing Day! At least then you'll know where your fish came from, which is more than anyone can say about Tokyo Toby's.

A Fishy Kind of Day

Looks like Mack beat us all to it on Go Fishing Day, and I have to say that's an impressive fish. Mack looks pretty proud of it, too, but maybe that's because he finally found an activity that didn't include Kevin.

I hope he's planning to eat his catch, because today is also International Sushi Day, but I suggest Jake avoid Tokyo Toby's this time. This is especially relevant because today is also the anniversary of the episode "My Night at Daria's" in 2001. Jake's bout with sushi-caused food poisoning was nothing to his freakout over Daria and Tom's tryst-that-wasn't-and-never-was.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 45): "Despite the fact that it was only a couple of days into January, Daria and Anahita knew that it was time to go back to Hogwarts."

  • Hearts Apart (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by Linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "Trent could immediately feel the lack of Rose's presence the first night he returned to his bartending job at Ruttheimer's after she'd left for home."

  • How To Be A Man (The Carbones), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Daria and the triplets were in the living room. Daria was reading Sun Tzu's The Art Of War while Teddy was reading Machiavelli's The Prince and Quinn was reading an issue of People." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Living in America, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "When school let out Friday, Jane told Daria 'Let’s just hang around until the game starts. If we get good seats, we might get high fives from the DJ’s as they skate by.'" (Part 10)

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 03: Night of the Coffee House, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 8): "As Daria headed to her next class, she thought about what Jane had said regarding Ms. Defoe. ‘I’ll talk to her at some point,’ she decided. It was bound to be significant."

Maybe Just Stick to Pizza Instead?

Jake must have decided that it's safer to be sushi than to eat sushi, which is true of Tokyo Toby's, anyway. If you decide to eat sushi today, be sure to avoid any restaurant with questionable health ratings!

Speaking of Jake's disastrous experience with Tokyo Toby's, today is the anniversary of the episode "My Night at Daria's," in which poor Jake not only got food poisoning but had a very uncomfortable couple of days after Daria and Tom got caught sleeping together. Literally.

Fanfic Update!
  • An Annoying Paradise, by Resop (part 9): "Daria reaches into her locker to get a book. 'Dar-Dar!' 'What is it, Manako?' 'Which song would you like to do?'"

  • My Breast Fiend, by Smijey (part 3): "Mack led Darius into the weight room, a room just off the gymnasium that Darius had never been inside before. 'I'm sorry about laughing, Darius. It's just, well...you, you know?'"

  • Nurse Quinn (Quinn, Season 4), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim lays unconscious in a hospital bed while a visibly sleep deprived Quinn, wearing the same outfit she wore that night at Chez Pierre, watches over him. Helen enters the room." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 128): "On a Saturday in Lawndale, the commencement exercises for the Lawndale High School Class of '18 were being held in the same location as every other graduation ceremony - the football field."

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'You're in a desert, walking along in the sand, when all of a sudden you look down...' 'Which one?' Daria interrupted. Manson sucked breath in through her teeth. 'It doesn't make any difference what desert, Dora, it's completely hypothetical.'"

There's Something Fishy Going On Here

Although today is International Sushi Day, Jake strongly suggests that you avoid Tokyo Toby's unless you want a side order of parasites. Fortunately, this is also Go Fishing Day, so you can just go out and catch your own!

Speaking of Tokyo Toby's, this also happens to be the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "My Night at Daria's," which features the yet-to-be shut down sushi restaurant. Oh, and there's also some sideplot about Daria and Tom deciding whether or not to have sex.

No, It's Supposed to be DON'T Panic!

It's International Panic Day, and all of Lawndale High is getting in on it. Fortunately, whatever they're panicking about can't possibly get past Ms. Li's security perimeter, so they're pretty much safe where they are. Unless someone's carrying unauthorized chocolate or forgot their hall pass.

Everyone could be panicking over Daria and Tom's sex life (or lack thereof), because today is also the anniversary of "My Night at Daria's," which first aired on this day in 2001. Not only did we gain all kinds of insight into Daria and Tom's relationship, but we also saw firsthand the ruthless efficiency of the Lawndale High gossip mill.

Fanfic Update!
  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (part 83): "In the driveway was a large blue van marked ALTERNAPALOOZA. Its driver emerged; a muscular young man with black hair tied into a bun, yellow eyes, and a smile a mile wide."

  • Exorcise in Futility, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "Pleased to see an appreciative audience for once, Timothy beamed. 'I suggest that each of you find a place that symbolizes your frustration and perform a sort of cleansing ritual to drive out your metaphorical demons.'"

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'The truth is,' Daria said, 'I don't think people understand what it is I did at Bromwell....'"

Steamy Homework Action!

Ten years ago today, the episode "My Night at Daria's" first aired. (Just as a head's up to the DariaWiki folks, the airdate is listed correctly in one place as June 18th in the article and incorrectly in another as June 11th.) (ETA: Now fixed. Thanks, TheExcellentS!)

The episode gave us a graphic portrayal of the passionate night Daria and Tom spent together, as you can see on the right. Hawt.

My Night at Tokyo Toby's

"My Night at Daria's" was first broadcast on MTV on this day nine years ago, and that's just the start of the many anniversaries and celebrations this day marks.

Civil rights activist Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 in court on this day 137 years ago, for voting in the 1872 presidential election. At the time it was illegal for women to vote in the United States. She presented her case with fire and eloquence to no avail, though it ensured her place in history. She never paid the fine.

Today is Autistic Pride Day, a topic relevant here because a number of fans believe Daria could have been a high-functioning autistic. The debate rages here on PPMB.

Sushi, anyone? This is International Sushi Day, too. It just so happens there is an alter ego for this very purpose, featuring Jake Morgendorffer, per his troubles with sushi in (drum roll) "My Night at Daria's," mentioned above. Nice timing. My favorite lines that Jake says about sushi: "Damn it, Helen, I know there's something crawling up my throat, and I think it's a parasite courtesy of Tokyo Toby's Parasite Restaurant! If I stand still, I can even feel it laughing inside of me..." and "Help me, Helen... before the madness sets in."

Former Beatle and Wings man Paul McCartney turns 68 today. Legendary firefighter Red Adair has his 95th birthday anniversary, too. (Best quote from Mr. Adair: "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.")

An odd bit of astronomical trivia: It was 832 years ago tonight that a group of monks witnessed an unusual event on the Moon. Puzzled, they recorded their observations in detail. It now appears that the monks saw the formation of the lunar crater Giordano Bruno.

PPMB
  • Daria: The Puppet Princess of Lawndale, by OverlordMikey (Part 1): In the small village of Glen Oaks, located in the Kingdom of Lawndale lived a simple young girl named Daria, who lived alone with her father Jake the Blacksmith. Daria was blessed with a strange and magical gift. She had the ability to speak to puppets... (Daria/Rhapsody)
  • Into the Fray, by Minx (Part 12): Quinn clutched the shotgun with clammy hands. She had never actually used a rifle before but the boys had shown everyone how to fire and load them. With a ragged breath she held it up and made sure the butt of the rifle was firmly pressed into the hollow of her shoulder so if or when she fired it the recoil action wouldn't cause the gun to fly back and shatter the bones in her shoulder. Quinn released the safety and lined the figure up. (FF.net)
  • Judith Strikes! The Long Good Sandi, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): Judith had time to realise she’d made a tactical error before Daria emerged from behind a row of dresses. She was firing a mercenary’s rifle and walking calmly forward, and two mercenaries were down before the others returned fire. “HAHAHAHA NO IDEA AT ALL WHIRL THE REAPWIND AHAHA” Bullets flew past her but she walked on, unhurried, expressionless, leaving all the soldiers dead as she went.
  • Little Sister, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): In the twenty years they had known each other, Daria had never seen Jane look so exhausted. "Where are my parents?" Daria whispered. "They are in Quinn's room." Jane said. "Is Quinn okay?" Daria asked. Jane's silence told Daria more than a million words could have.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef Challenge: Post-Angstpocalypse), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): Her aunt was being held at gunpoint, a suitcase of money in her hands. "Get away from her!" Daria rushed forward and was knocked aside. She founded herself falling. The drop felt longer than it really was. Shortly thereafter came a gunshot and another body limp and lifeless fell beside her... it was her aunt.

My Night at Daria's was Too Cute!

Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of the premiere of "Too Cute," from the first season (at right), and tomorrow will be the 8th anniversary of the first showing of "My Night at Daria's," from season five. Today is just the day between. Which of these two episodes did you like best, and why? That's today's Comments question.

Disco316 has provided us with a DariaWiki page on Dariarotica. About time! Just be careful what gets added to it.

More in a few minutes. Just got out of the hospital (long story, doesn't involve a penguin, forget it), need to catch up on stuff. brb!

BACK: More discussion of a possible Midwest Dariacon 2009 around Labor Day is being held on PPMB. Interested? Post about it!

And now for the fun stuff.

PPMB
  • Action Stories 3: Two Knights Defense, by Nightgoblyn (Part 4): “I’m glad this day is over,” Quinn said as she stuffed most of her books back into her locker. “You say that every day,” Jane replied. “Today, I’m especially glad.”
  • Daylight: Fallen from Grace: I Should Have Been Home Yesterday, by Disco316 (Part 7): The sun was nearing the west horizon as Quinn, Sandi, and Stacy approached the Interstate 64 overpass at Golf Mountain Road. The area was desolate compared to the relatively well-populated areas of Tyler Heights and Cross Lanes, which had combined into one settlement referred to by many as Tyler’s Cross.
  • Daddy's Home, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Stacy screamed as she opened the door of her room only to find... [I won't spoil it. ]
  • Daria, Agent of COBRA: Expectavi, by Ranchoth (Part 3): Interrogator shook the last splatter off the tip of his baton, before wiping it passably clean on his coat. The stain blended in well with the others. "How's it coming?" [The goodness continues!]
  • Falling into College 68: Judging January, by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "Okay, if this is such a learning moment, what am I supposed to learn?" "We can never get rid of our unconscious biases, but we can learn to control our conscious ones. Do your best to judge Nell's project as you would anyone else's." "A lot easier said than done." [Bonus nerd points for finding the Red Dwarf reference.]
  • For a Time, by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "Helen!" Jake shouted, "I am not going to have a..." Pain suddenly stabbed his chest, and his head exploded in pain. Breath failed him and his vision began to telescope down to a pinpoint. No! I'm leaving them, just like he left me! The rest was blackness. [Happy Father's Day!]
  • Mystik Spiral Bitchen Party, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): [Songfic time! The link leads to another link giving you the music and setting!]
  • Paper Medal, by Angelinhel (COMPLETE!): [A heartbreaking but beautiful story that you have to read, written by a master.]

A Day for the Jakester

Today is one of those weirdo what-the-heck-is-this kind of pseudo-holidays, but for our purposes it turns out to be perfect. It's Kitchen Klutzes of America Day, seriously. Who makes this crap up? Anyway, we know what to do to celebrate this wonderful day: make something in the kitchen like Jake Morgendorffer would do. Just for this special day we will use the alter ego from MTV showing Jake as sushi. Reminds me of the subplot for "My Night at Daria's." Works for me.

Today is also the annual Blog Like It's the End of the World Day, as Medea42 reminds us. (Thank you.) Support your local zombie horde!

Now 1,291 fans at the Daria Fan Club! Speaking of which, anyone have any opinions or thoughts about that website? How useful is it, how could it be more useful, etc.?

"Will you do it for a twenty?"

In the infamous scene at right, Tom (with wallet out) negotiates a price with Daria for the evening to come in "My Night at Daria's." There are favorable episode reviews of this one (Outpost Daria, Sick Sad World 1, Sick Sad World 2). The DariaWiki page on this is not complete. (Help, anyone?)

PPMB
  • Avenging, by Lorenzo Sauchelli (Parts 9 and 10): Daria closed her eyes at the green blood and shook her head. "I never thought I would say this, but- EWWWW!"
  • Falling Into College 63: Broken Star, by Richard Lobinske (Part 2): Waiting for news about a loved one in danger is the hardest thing of all.
  • The Lawndalian Candidate, by mman (Part 1): "Esteemsters" redone, with a unique political angle. M0ar of this, pl33z.
  • New Life, by legendeld (Part 6): That was the rudest of awakenings.
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): "Just thinking about it makes me feel achingly glamorous." "That's strange, all I feel is pouty and waif-like."
  • Swan Song, by NightGoblyn (Part 6): Daria to Sandi: “Listen to me, you stuck-up bitch."

Two Iron Chefs are receiving far better than average fare. IC: Natural Born Killers, put forth by ikaa, asks for a crossover with the movie Natural Born Killers. Scissors MacGillicutty stepped up to the plate and drove the ball out of the stadium. IC: Evil Jane has gained marvelous responses from NightGoblyn and BlackHole. Check 'em out.

Speaking of fan art, S.C.'s "Daria vs. Melody Powers" comic page is a brain-burner. Whoa. Also, Lorenzo Sauchelli shows Daria as Captain America (from "Avenging") and Samantha Arangois as War Machine. I don't know who Samantha is.

Remember that little Daria statuette someone made? Here's more about it. Thanks to Reese Kaine for the update.

I Spent the Night at Daria's and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt

The Man Who Gave Condoms His Name

Only 3,287 years ago today, Ramses II (a.k.a. Ramses the Great to his closest friends) became the pharaoh of Egypt. I read this on Wikipedia and thought, how the heck did they know it was this date? Nice work there. This has to do with Daria because of "My Night at Daria's."

Also, Clint Eastwood was born 78 years ago. This has to do with Daria because the Gorillaz song, "Clint Eastwood," is played twice on "My Night at Daria's."

DariaPhantom has noted an announcement on TVShowsonDVD.com that may mean hope for Daria. Others are skeptical. We shall see.

Medea42 asks, "Has anyone ever tried to fit a fanfic to the song 'Daria' by Cake? It seems like it would be good inspiration for 'adult Daria.'" A link to the lyrics is here. (Speaking of Medea42, see her page on DariaWiki. Well done.)

In the realm of wacky fanfic, Paisleygal and NightGoblyn address an Iron Chef: "There are no laws, but there are rules!"

In Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Dawn of a New Nightmare, we read this blood-chilling passage: "I'm baaaaaaaaaack," Thom Sloane said with an evil smile.
