Zzzzzzzz....

I would wish Trent a happy Festival of Sleep Day but I think he's going to sleep straight through it. For those in fandom who are awake, feel free to take a nap guilt-free!

In fact, going to sleep might be a safe bet because if you're sleeping then you won't have to suffer embarrassment on Humiliation Day. Unless you fall asleep in public, that is.

For those who would rather stay awake, you could celebrate JRR Tolkien Day by reading The Lord of the Rings. You could also make a candle shaped like a hobbit, but then you'd run the risk of celebrating Humiliation Day if it comes out looking like a misshapen lump of wax like Jake's did.

Fanfic Update!
  • Mirror Mirror (1995), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Louisa looked in the mirror. The strange thing was happening again. But that wasn’t what was important."

  • Spider Quinn 19 Making the News Amidst the Storms, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 13): "Andrea arrived at the Historia for breakfast. 'I’m still not sure why you wanted to be here this early,' her mother complained."

Hold Me Closer, Tiny Lawyer

Helen is definitely breaking the law firm's dress code, but that's okay because it's Elton John's birthday and he has always been all about shattering norms and expectations. I just hope Quinn doesn't catch her in those clunky shoes, because if she thought drinking coffee was a fashion don't then this will drive her completely through the roof.

For those who prefer a more low-key holiday, there's always Tolkien Reading Day! You can curl up with The Silmarillion or take Jake's example and celebrating by making a wax...hobbit? Who knows, really.

If you get hungry during all of that reading, you can finish by celebrating International Waffle Day. Just make sure you check the sell-by date if you don't want to develop a very mild stomachache.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ambivalence, by janendaria4life (COMPLETE!): "Quinn Morgendorffer sat on her bed, phone in hand as she talked with Stacy Rowe."

  • Daria Enrolls At Nevermore: An Experiment, by Meester_Lee (part 16): "The speeches over and the meet-and-greet with the Nevermore faculty and staff began to wind down. Interesting people, thought Helen."

  • Death of a Muscle Car, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Jim's Camaro was heading back to Lawndale. Outside, the weather was becoming increasingly overcast. Inside, Jim was giving Timmy the silent treatment as he drove."

  • Hell High, by avav3 (part 1): "Well, Lawndale certainly wasn’t a downgrade. It was a free fall. Fielding burned itself to the ground, and now I was stuck sifting through the ashes of public school."

  • Mysteries of Aurora, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 12): "Freya entered the dining hall for lunch. She found two she hadn't talked to yet that day near one of the windows that looked out onto the courtyard next to the Hall."

  • Scornful Ties, by janendaria4life (COMPLETE!): "Jodie Landon's parents, Andrew and Michele, made it much clear that they had a extremely important event occurring that Friday night and since they, supposedly, 'trusted her judgement,' she'd be babysitting her younger siblings, Rachel and Evan."

How Long Do Hobbits Sleep?

Either Trent's celebrating Festival of Sleep Day or someone needs to check his pulse. Either way, he sure seems relaxed and peaceful!

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of J. R. R. Tolkien in 1892. Those of you who are actually awake can observe the day by making a hobbit-shaped candle! Or you could just read The Lord of the Rings, I guess.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I see that Trent is way ahead of the rest of us on Festival of Sleep Day, although I suspect he began observing the holiday several years ago. All the same, get plenty of rest today if you can!

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of J. R. R. Tolkien on this day in 1892, and Jake made Helen another hobbit-shaped candle to celebrate. At least, I think it's a hobbit. It could be anything, honestly.

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 15): "'Can you believe the topic of that essay?' Jennifer asked. Daria, walking beside her on their way to her house, nodded. 'I doubt even half the class can spell "intersectional bipartisanship", let alone know what it is.'"

  • Daria: High School Reunion, by Serrallonga (part 6): "(As Twain jumps over the counter, Dante stops playing and gets down the stage, helping Tommy to get up. They start walking very slowly) TWAIN: So, how're you doing, boy? TOMMY: Kill me."

  • Daria Ravenclaw, by Meester_Lee (parts 19 and 20): "Jake awoke early the next morning. My biological clock must have reset to London time, he thought bemusedly. He went to the bathroom, used the commode, then shaved and showered. He went back into the bedroom and changed into daywear." (Part 20)

  • A family Secret, by RĂ©mi (part 1): "The Morgendorffer family was seated around the table, eating dinner, when Jake asked in a benevolent tone : 'How's the old self-esteem coming, kiddo ?'"

  • Flames Of Fashion (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "A fire truck raced toward the building with it's sirens going off. The truck came to a halt in front of one of the buildings. Quinn, Stacy, Brittany, Sandi and O'Malley all disembarked."

  • Hobbitdale (Iron Chef - Tall Daria), by cfardellbrenorenz29 (part 2): "Daria walked with the Human girl she had met in the Self-Esteem class, Jane Lane, towards her house. She was amazed that Hobbitdale seemed to have a majority Hobbit population, whereas Highland was mostly human."

  • Living Is Easy With Her Close, by belivaird_st (part 1): "Daria sits up in bed one morning and hears her parents arguing sporadically downstairs. The Morgendorffers must be in the kitchen, because a plate shatters fatally on the linoleum floor with Helen wailing, 'Now look what you've done, Jake!' with her mournful sobbing coming soon afterwards."

  • My Cruddy Valentine, by Lady Evil (part 7): "In the art club, all the kids were painting and drawing while Jane made some decorations for the party. She cut out a paper garland of red hearts and sighed."

  • Time For A Change (Daria And Quinn), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn was in the kitchen taking some marangues out of the oven. A tripod mounted camera was recording the whole action. After shutting off the oven, Quinn turned her attention to the camera." (Part 2)

Let's Hope the Rash Doesn't Come Back

Today is Humiliation Day, and judging by the way Daria's blushing I suspect she's participating. That, or Trent just walked by without a shirt on. Although that second one isn't as likely because today also happens to be Festival of Sleep Day and I seriously doubt Trent's going to pass that opportunity up.

Additionally, J.R.R. Tolkien was born on this day in 1892, and I know we've got quite a few Lord of the Rings fans out there. To celebrate, I got you a very lumpy candle that may or may not be a hobbit.

Remember to nominate for the 2014 Daria Fanworks Awards!

Fanfic Update!
  • Black Cloaks of Lawndale, by Waylander (COMPLETE!): "Since the day Aunt Amy decided that her student's 'magical muscles' need proper rest, Daria was bored out of her mind. The proven methods of dealing with boredom weren't working."

  • A Boring Summer, by ST91 (parts 2 and 3): "'So it's for this reason that in the past women couldn't have roles in plays.' said Dario to Brittany as they left the movie theater." (Part 3)

  • Calendar Boy (Iron Chef - Characters haunted by their embarrassing pasts), by Snow-Kitty (parts 1 and 2): "Daria looked up to see her friend Jane standing point blank beside her locker. 'Um... are you okay Jane?' she said with trepidation, confused by the underlying bewilderment in her friend's eyes." (Part 2)

  • Daria Joins The Sweet Cake Girls, by peapotmaster (part 1): "Daria sat down on her computer to watch the latest web episode of her favorite show, Sick, Sad World."

  • Forced Impression, by Indigo (part 5): "Quinn waited until the boys had driven away before indulging in her new pastime of gently teasing her sister about boys. 'Well I think one date with Joey will do for now. So Daria, you did it, movie, burger and backseat with a boy. Did you like the kissing?'"

  • A Little Exercise (Iron Chef: Start In The Middle of an Action Sequence), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Daria gasped as she counted the oncoming, gore-caked beasts, blood-flecked foam and pus flying from their mouths like pinkish-white steam trails: Ten... fourteen... twenty... twenty-three... Jesus, who let all the dogs out?"

  • Mine Origins, by Vukodlak (part 7): "After her morning shower Daria stared in the mirror and debating on going back to bed or getting dressed and heading downstairs. On one had she was really hungry on the other hand it was her birthday and she worried what her family was going to do to try and lift her spirits."

  • Outclassed, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): " Sandi crossed her arms. 'This isn't about escaping the class anymore. This is about taking down Mr. O'Neill. Not just as revenge, but as a public service to the school. If we're successful, no one--or at least not as many people--will care about us being put in the class in the first place. We'll be the people who defeated the worst teacher Lawndale High has ever had.'"

  • Padding after dark (Something Special), by Bill Bruford (COMPLETE!): "Drip... Drip... Drip... 'Sam you idiot, why can't you turn off the sink.' Sandi said, eyes wide open taking in the moonlight."

  • Quinn's Code 11: The Geek Hunter, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "'Right, we have Sandi and Tori to deal with,' Quinn said. 'Go ahead!' Stacy said. 'Are you sure?' Quinn asked. 'Yes!'"

  • Unnamed story ('Iron Chef' for Robyn & all comers - 'The First Ten Minutes'), by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "'Gotta get away from the bears! Gotta get away from the bears!' • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'You know, Daria - this really isn't that bad.' 'Of course you'd think that - now, you have a reason to be lazy all day!'"

Fore! Yeah.

Jesse is playing a few rounds in honor of Miniature Golf Day. When he was told that the holiday was for miniature golf, not regular golf, he sagely replied, "Cool."

J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit was published on this day in 1937, so now's the time to make a lumpy candle for your significant other. Or was it a wizard?

Finally, this is Banned Books Week, so Daria's sure to be yelling at her television in her fight against censorship.

Fanfic Update!
  • ASPS 3, by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "Scratching at the stubble on his face, he thought, I am genuinely looking forward to meeting you. Dmitri was the key. Dmitri would help him to change Fielding."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 23): "'I don't smoke any more. She made us quit after the cops were here for Tom's sister. If I had gotten busted for it I'd be in prison.' 'Oh, true.' Jane had liked Lindy before but now she was surprised to find a kind of respect, almost reverence, for Lindy. She had gotten Trent and the rest of Mystic Spiral to do more than they had for years."

  • Mine, by Vukodlak (part 11): "Daria stared at her dresser where she'd set the little white stick to wait out the three minutes. She hadn't been this nervous in years; but at least this time she had Tom's lap to settle into."

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 24): "It had come as something of a shock to Matt when he learned that Hollywood had been lying to him about endings all his life. In the movies the hero generally got to walk away unmolested and being able to defend yourself earned you respect and personal space. Reality, it turned out, was a lot less considerate."

  • Psychiatric Devaluation, by DarkDranzer (part 2): "'Ah, Anthony. I take it you received my message?' Anthony leaned back on the chair, causing it to creak and rolled his eyes at her question. 'It would be FOOLISH of me to say NO at this point, ESPECIALLY since you went through all the TROUBLE of calling me BEFORE SIX this morning.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by DarkDranzer (COMPLETE!): "Mr. O'Neill: (with tissues on his lap while reading Little Women, did not notice a door slam shut and someone entering the stall next to him) Oh Jo...Be worthy love, and love will come in the falling summer r--* Mr. DeMartino: WUUUARRGHHH!!"

  • Upper Echelon, by Princess_Pasta (part 16): "Daria averted her eyes, apparently very interested in the Periodic Table of Elements. Quinn noticed and immediately shifted to investigative mode. She could always tell when Daria was hiding something. The hard part was getting her to talk."

Zzzzzzz....

Daria's getting a few extra winks because today is Festival of Sleep Day. Trent, of course, considers this to be a year-round holiday.

For the Lord of the Rings fans out there, today is also the anniversary of author J. R. R. Tolkien's birth in 1892. To celebrate, Helen is going to dig out the hobbit candle Jake made for her and Jake is going to shriek in terror at it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Twilight Friday, by Brother Grimace (parts 1 - 6): "She slinked away from her desk, batting her eyes at her husband - and her faux-seductive demeanor sloughed away suddenly as Denny held up a small, slightly beaten-up brown strongbox. 'Oh, Denny...'" (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • "Aw Mama...Can This Really Be The End?", by Scissors MacGillicutty (part 7): "'...and with that, I'm going to turn the meeting over to some of the resident and post of duty offices in the Washington D.C. division. I'd like to start with Agents Hauser and O'Brien in the Carter County post of duty office and then go to the Baltimore division office. Agents Hauser and O'Brien—are you there? I haven't seen any video from you since the start of the meeting.'"

  • Battle-Axe, by meowarts (part 4): "It had been two months since the Morgendorffer's moved into the quiet suburban life Lawndale offered. And life went on despite her silent protests."

  • A Capital Honeymoon (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "The two couples arrived at their hotel, ready for their joint honeymoon. Checking their room numbers, they discovered they were next door to each other."

  • Credence, by Astrocar82 (parts 6 and 7): "'It's a chemical compound that dissolves in the oil that hair produces. Squeeze it on your hands, run your hands over someone's hair and, presto, foul smelling liquid starts to foam on them that eventually drenches their body. My mom got kicked out beauty school for it.' 'It's perfect, but how do we get it on her? She'll notice us coming near her now.'" (Part 7)

  • The Crimson Queen's Daughter's, by macross (part 5): "It wasn't the fact that the commander seemed completely unsurprised by the man's presence, in fact it seemed like he was expecting him; no the thing which had caused all of the rage fueled valor to flow out of him was the little girl with bright red hair slumbering in the Commander's arms."

  • Dead Inside (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As a chap named Tom Sloane shook his twenty-something booty while working the stripper pole, his pink thong already filling up with cash, it took everything that he had not to cry."

  • It's All An Illusion...Maybe, by Doggieboy (part 1): "The man in the long dark brown robe searched the closet, and tore through piles of clothing and forgotten papers, a despearate expression on his face."

  • Jane, by PrecambrianStudios (part 4): "'So, what would you like to sculpt?' Cassandra asked as she and Jane reclined on the couch inside Jane and Trent's apartment."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie: Future Excerpt 1, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'And Lawndale is currently embroiled in a crisis brought on by the discovery of a Genie. Correct?' the new arrival asked. 'That is correct. What is going on?' Kyra asked."

  • Loss of Heart, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Wadding up her paper napkin and dropping it on the empty lunch tray, Daria said, 'After a rough start with Mr. O'Neill, the day hasn't been that bad. Mrs. Bennett kept things in hand and Mr. DeMartino was surprisingly supportive.'"

  • Mission: Impawsible, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Mr. Whiskers crept over to the corner of the house to peer around to the front, but suddenly scrambled backward as J. B., Snuffles, and Odette raced around the other side. Odette growled fiercely, and Taylor bared her claws and hissed. 'Stop!' cried both Fluffy and J. B. at the same time."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Daria entered the school. Instantly she noticed many things that didn't seem right. 'Of course, Highland wasn't 'right' either,' she thought. Her trained investigator's eye saw a great many security cameras along the length of the corridor she was entering. 'There are at least eight. That's overkill.'"

  • No Unfinished Business, by thedefiantone (COMPLETE!): "'I am definitely over it,' she said, flexing her tired, numb fingers until some feeling was restored. She had been writing all night; or rather, she had been writing the same thing all night, hoping that, by dint of repetition, it would magically be rendered true."

  • Quinn the Psychopath, by SacredDust (COMPLETE!): "It was a done deal, Sandi thought with a smirk of triumph. Her plot to oust Quinn as any sort of a threat to her status at Lawndale High had been a smashing success."

  • Sisters and Friends, by metameric1 (part 19): "Quinn smiled. He was so unassuming, but so capable at what he did. He carried himself with a quiet confidence, and he somehow managed to bring calm to a tense situation. She had been grateful for that; even over a videocall he managed to keep her centered and focused during the final software integration check."

Zzzzzzzzz....

It's Festival of Sleep Day, but celebrate quietly--you do not want to wake Daria up too early in the morning. Or afternoon. Or any time. We all know Trent is observing this holiday. In fact, he's most likely the patron saint of the day or something.

Today is also the anniversary of the 1892 birth of J. R. R. Tolkien, author of such fantasy books as The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Tolkien fans out there might be interested in Dennis's (unfinished) crossover, Shadows of a Timeless Song.

We know Jake and Helen were Tolkien fans in their younger days, as shown by the Hobbit candle Jake gave Helen in the "Sappy Anniversary" flashback. Or at least we're pretty sure it was supposed to be a Hobbit.

"Brown is so...soothing."

On this day in 1892, J. R. R. Tolkien was born. Bikini-clad Helen invites you to join in the celebration as she displays this handmade Hobbit candle. Although I'm willing to bet that at least a few blog readers have only just noticed the candle she's holding....

Dennis has started (but not finished) a Daria/Lord of the Rings crossover called Shadows of a Timeless Song. Is it pitchforking time? But of course! First, though, some fandom news:

The Great Frozen North, The Wild Wild West

Alaska became a state 51 years ago, about a century after being purchased from Russia. A number of alternate histories have supposed that the sale hinged on the Union winning the American Civil War. What if the Confederacy had won independence? Would "Seward's Folly" have still been acquired? If gold had been discovered in large quantities by Russian prospectors before the sale, would a Russian Gold Rush have kept the territory in the Empire? Would Great Britain have invaded Alaska from Canada to seize it for themselves? Most importantly, would any of this have made any difference to the background of Daria? For storytelling, I mean. Probably not. Oh, well, just tossed that out there for the fanfic writers. Can't say I didn't try.

NEWER! Three Daria fanfics that feature Alaska up close: "North to Alaska, South to Lawndale," by Robert Nowall (in which Trent gets involved in a gold rush); "White Out," by Wouter (in which runaway Jane and her canine pal Zippo check into Fairbanks; and "Baked Alaska," by Brother Grimace, a Daylight story in which the Legion of Lawndale Heroes and the Alliance have their hands full saving a part of the world. Good times. (Why is it the Lanes who usually go to Alaska, and no one else?)

J.R.R. Tolkien was born 118 years ago today. Did Daria ever read The Lord of the Rings? Officially we don't know, but Tolkien is named in a number of Daria fanfics. Daria's Sick, Sad Life Planner does mention the event, however. (See below, and ignore the grammatical errors.) At least Mr. O'Neill appears to have read Tolkien's works. One very good Daria/LotR crossover in progress is "Shadows of a Timeless Song," by Dennis.

And Sergio Leone, King of the Spaghetti Westerns, was born 81 years ago. He is most famed for his crossover movies "Once Upon a Time in Lawndale" and "The Cynic, The Fashionista, and The Jackass." Excellent work, both of them. (And thanks to UU and Pinhead for both images!)

I plan to begin the 2010 fanfiction listing before the end of January, but for now I am taking a break from worrying about it. Updates will be posted here until then.

Cool discussion threads on PPMB worth reading:
Lot of posts on Facebook's Daria site, but... eh, they're the ones who'll buy the DVDs, so I have nothing to add. More power to them, all 260,000 of 'em. Buy! Buy! My Darlings!

The Melted Thing She's Holding Is a Hobbit

A lot of birthday anniversaries are up for celebration today, all relevant to this fandom in various major and minor ways:
It is also the International Day of Peace, for what that's worth.

More to come.... and here it is!

Superfan Pinhead turns out to be an amazing artist. He has posted some of his work to PPMB: a thread of Daria/Melody Powers art, and a special moment between Daria and Jane. This is fairly mind boggling stuff.

PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1 - COMPLETE): Ever since Finn starting going through puberty and started his seductive attitude, Helen had been trying to make sure he didn’t end up like Rita. Daria and Finn may not have fought as often, but they certainly were as bitter to each other, as Rita was to her. Despite all her desires not to, Finn was becoming the person she despised most in the world. The fact that Finn was her son was heartbreaking.
  • Jacob Morgendorffer, Esq., by CAP (Part 3): “Hi, Dad,” Jake tentatively said stepping to his father‘s side. “What are you doing here?” Mad Dog wheezed. “Mom asked me to come,” Jake replied. “She said that you were... sick.”

Tom and Tolkien

Today being the birthday of J. R. R. Tolkien, I decided to present an alter ego of Tom Sloane as one of the great and terrifying Trolls of Mordor, from The Lord of the Rings. Trolls were feared for their enormous height and great strength, and if you rubbed their colorful hair you could make a wish but nothing would happen except the Troll would eat you. Note that this is also the only alter ego of Tom in which he is completely naked. Now I can understand why Daria wasn't exactly thrilled to sleep with him in season five.

As pointed out earlier, the list of 2008 Daria Written Fanworks is complete. Check it for errors, then nominate for the big one!

Helen Morgendorffer has been accused of many things, but this one has to be the strangest accusation of them all! Thanks, ninetwelve.

  • Daria One Half, by Batlurker, a.k.a. Lorenzo Sauchelli (Parts 1 and 2): This Daria/Ranma 1/2 tale starts off with a little surprise for the Morgendorffer girls from dad Jake.

  • Arrival, by Legendeld (Part 7): Jane Lane found herself trying to figure out where her life went wrong as she scrapped herself off the floor of the bar. Her head was ringing and she was pretty sure it wasn’t sweat running down her chin.
  • Fundamental Daria: I'm With Stupid, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): Oh, Jodie Landon, you sneaky little devil you.
  • John Lane 38: Yeah, It's Summer, by Richard Lobinske (Part 4): Daria, John, and Alison have a threesome in the woods, while Quinn hooks up with an underage male named Link.
  • Once Upon a Time in Lawndale, by Disco316 (Part 2): Amanda Lane looked down the sight of her shotgun. Her targets were in sight, so she pulled the trigger.
  • Order and Chaos, by Legendeld (Part 18): Quinn jumped above the flying metal before flipping in mid air to land behind Darth Bane. Her double bladed attack was blocked as he spun and snarled at her.
