Just Don't Mention Snakes!

Looks like Trent finally found a hobby worth staying awake for, just in time for Indiana Jones creator George Lucas's 75th birthday! I don't think anyone expected it to be fighting Nazis for mystical relics. Then again, the name "Mystik Spiral" should have been a clue.

I know that fandom has produced quite a few fanfic crossovers with Star Wars, Lucas's even more well-known work, but has anyone crossed Daria with Indiana Jones? If not, please do!

But How Does Trent Feel About Snakes?

Trent's cracking the whip as Indiana Jones because the character's creator George Lucas turns 70 today. Apparently when Trent referred to having his "eyes on the prize," he was referring to holy relics. Who knew?

Fanfic Update!
  • Alienation, by malakite (parts 14 and 15): "Home lacked any unpleasant surprises, which was itself slightly surprising." (Part 15)

  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (part 66): "A towering girl with black hair reaching down to her shoulders, yellow eyes, pale skin, wearing a black business suit with a red tie and huge glasses walked into the Zon, trading glances with a few other boys who seemed both turned on and disturbed by her. She was used to it; her effeminate yet powerful presence was rather overwhelming, she'd been told."

  • Coffee Date, by lulamae-golightly (COMPLETE!): "Stacy Rowe brushed her curly hair from her face and walked into Cashman's in the mall. At twenty seven years old, she didn't shop there that much, but she had a day off and needed something to do."

  • Credence, by Astrocar82 (part 11): "'And you are a lovely one,' Romonica said to Daria as she approached her desk. 'Could you stand and walk back and forth for us?'"

  • Double the fun (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "Daria returned from a visit to the bathroom at the Zon, as she had half expected her friend Jane Lane was talking to the boy that she had noticed noticing her."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (part 10): "As she was home alone, she quickly made her way downstairs to open the door and smiled at the boy stood waiting for her, dressed in a dark blue sweater and white pants, his brown hair moving in the slight evening breeze. 'Hello, Tom,' she said."

  • Lullabies, by GingerLove (COMPLETE!): "Daria rocked slowly in the chair her parents had given her, humming softly to the little bundle in her arms. She smiled softly as she looked down at him. Six months old, and a perfect copy of his father."

  • Mine, by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "The trio was on their way to New Town; Veronica was secured in the back headphones on and bobbing her head to the beat Alvin and the Chipmunk's music"

  • Oh, Danny Boy, by Indigo (part 2): "Jane got her first close up look at Danny and although it would be some time before she would admit it even to herself and would try to resist it she fell in love exactly the same way as Danny had for her."

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 4): "The brunette stepped forwards and Quinn bounced to a stop, letting her arms hang casually as she was inspected. She knew she didn't have to worry about a thing; she'd had too much practise to fail now, but still the butterflies danced in her stomach."

  • Renewment, by RLobinske (part 5): "'What are my girls planning? I know they're up to something.' Michael sat back and chuckled. 'I can tell where Daria gets it from, but then, I shouldn't be surprised.'"

  • Sonoma Coma, by jtranser (part 15): "'I got here as soon as I could, which, as you know, is pretty damn fast. What happened, Daria? It's not like You to be agitated.'"

  • Tell me Why?, by Madmaper13 (COMPLETE!): "A hand stretched out with a pen in hand towards a calendar and crossed out a Saturday and a Sunday."

  • Tigresses of Lawndale, by taishigi (part 18): "Because of the timer showing on the side screens, nearly everyone had made it back to their seats when the lights started flash, reminding them that the second act was about start."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by ticknart (COMPLETE!): "'Jane?' said Jodie, 'Have you seen Daria today?' 'Not yet.' 'Uh...'"

Searching for Mystical Artifacts...in Between Naps!

Happy birthday to George Lucas, born on this day in 1944. Perhaps best known for creating (and over-editing) the Star Wars franchise, Lucas also created the character Indiana Jones, impersonated on the right by Trent. I'm not sure if Trent has the stamina to pull off some of Indy's big stunts, but I'll bet that whip comes in handy when the rest of The Spiral slacks off during practice.

At Least Keeping His Eyes Closed Won't be a Problem!

Happy 67th birthday to George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. Interesting alter ego on the right, but somehow I doubt that Trent really has either the stamina or the motivation to hunt down priceless artifacts and fight off Nazis.

Fanfic Update!
  • Apocalyptic Diarrhea (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Daria walked up to the pharmacy counter. The clerk, whose nametag read 'Odell', smiled and asked, 'What can I do for you, miss?'"

  • Beavis and Butt-head in: 7/11 and Counting (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "And in Lawndale and Boston and anywhere else she was, in a million realities, Daria Morgendorffer witnessed the events on September 11 and was left distraught. Meanwhile, back on Highland, Beavis and Butt-head were just wondering why Buzzcut had just turned on the TV to show them a disaster film."

  • Daria 40k: Is It The Black Crusade, Yet?, by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "'Hey. We're the Mystic Spiral Chaos Legion... though we're thinking of changing our name. • Daria/Dorian Ch. 15: Summertime Blues, by LadieT (part 2): "'Well, Ashfield is four hours away and I have to be there by three - so I figured we would leave about ten. • A Different Look at 1111, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Quinn stared at Sandi. She had read that copy of Waif. There was nothing about frills going out of fashion in there. 'Of course, Sandi,' she said. 'There has to be some way I can refute her claim without jeopardising my position,' she thought. Then it hit her. The weirdness of the house! She dashed to the kitchen. 'I have realised that I have to get something out of the garage,' she said."

  • Doctor Who – The Many Doctors (Non-Daria), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (prologue): "'That is not the reason we are going off course,' the Doctor said, with a disapproving tone. 'Do you know what the reason is then?' Sigrun Friorikadottir asked. 'The reason is that the TARDIS is going off course, is that it wants to go off course, remember that the TARDIS is alive, so to speak' the Doctor said."

  • End of the Rope (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Quinn pulled the shop door open, took a deep breath and stepped inside. She gave her best smile as she walked up to the counter and pulled a velvet bag out of her purse."

  • God Save The Esteem ep30: Dance Noon, by Charles RB (parts 2 and 3): "'Ha, I got sod all. Sorry.' Stacy blinked and her face took on a scowl. 'Alright bitch, here's a fucking idea: let's just, shock horror, put on some lights and music and let people do their own fucking dancing. Get some beer in and old-school Misfits, who needs to over think this?!' 'Uh.' Sandi somehow managed to take a step backwards while sitting down. 'Th-That's an interesting idea, S-Stacy...'" (Part 3)

  • Hothouse Flower, by RX-87 (part 4): "'He looks kinda familiar...' She thought, but couldn't quite place him. But then, there was a lot she couldn't remember. 'Thanks.' The coach said. Tiffany doubted it was whoever she might've been thinking of when he spoke. She was sure she'd never heard that voice before."

  • The Interview (Iron chef: Super Jail/ Daria crossover), by untra (COMPLETE!): "'Can I help you?' A bored Alice sighed across her desk, whilst twirling her baton. The visitor seemed different in a way, as if her lines were thicker and her disposition more serious. 'I'm here to apply for a job,' Janet Barch replied sternly. 'I have a lot of pent up anger, and I need to channel it into something productive.'"

  • Life of Love (Long Story Challenge 3, Round 3), by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "With a sigh, the man leaned down and touched Trent's forehead. The headache cleared instantly, as did his vision. • Make Way for Daria (Iron Chef: Boston Crossover), by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "'Shit,' Daria said to herself. 'I'm already 45 minutes late thanks to the fucked up traffic in this city and now I can't cross the street.' Raising her voice, she said, 'What the hell is taking so long?'"

  • Not So Different 20: Not Kindred Spirits, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "'That's a beautiful piece of work.' Jane smiled sunnily at Ted. 'It's a really nice thing to make for a friend.' Sonny didn't know whether Ted could detect the subtle emphasis on the last word, but he could, and he knew Jane meant him to. Well, two can play at that kind of game, he thought, and one of them's the expert."

  • Not So Different 21: Hothouse Ghetto, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "Marina continued by asking Sonny about his goal, presumably on the inadequate grounds that he was sitting next to Jodie. Sonny explained that he didn't have any. Marina insisted that he must. Right, both barrels, thought Sonny. 'My goal is to avoid getting any more of the beatings which have been a regular part of my school experience until now, but without compromising my personal standards to achieve that end.' Marina giggled nervously. Sonny felt confident she wouldn't bother him again and he was right."

  • Quinn of Hearts, by Kristen Bealer (part 3): "Daria paused in thought for a moment, then shrugged. 'Okay, I'll bite. What's wrong?' Quinn waved her over. Yes, I have.'"

  • Rude Awakening Ep. 4: It's That Kind of Day, by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "(Robert is sieving with anger as he walks out then after the door closes, Jodie and Judith give each others high fives and pats on the back.) • Rude Awakening Ep 5: Switching Formats, by DIsaac (part 1): "DARIA: Ahh, Cheap wine. The drink of female writers. If I was a guy I would have some beer in here. I wonder ... what if - me and Jane were guys? Would we be the same people? Well I'm a writer, so I'll write it out! (Daria walks over to the writing corner of her apartment with her computer ready)"

  • Silent Melody, by Silver: "Washington- Scientists today confirmed that previously unknown forms of radiation and energy are responsible for the auroral display now referred to as 'The Erruption' this past summer. The exact properties of these new phenomena elude scientists, but there has been some reports of mutations occurring in human beings, most notably increases in physical stamina and intelligence. This has resulted in public concern over supposed Soviet 'super agents' infiltrating the US..."

  • These Scarred Walls (Possible Iron Chef: Maimed/Scarred Quinn), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Daria stood, her expression one of conflicted emotions, her friendship with Jane and desire to protect Quinn crashing together like two ships caught in a storm. Jane noticed this and prepared to back off meekly, but she heard Quinn call out Daria's name. The elder sister balked at whatever she had been about to say, the side of her lip twitching, and a little of Jane's confidence returned. 'No, please, it's nothing like that!" she told Daria, holding her hands up in defense. "I . . . the second I saw Quinn . . . I just . . . I wanted to paint her.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Boston Crossover), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Daria was walking across the street, when she suddenly found herself accosted by a bunch of teenagers who were all wearing bright shirts with blocky horizontal stripes. • Where Nobody Wants to Know Your Name (Iron Chef: Boston Crossover), by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "Daria sat at the bar, nursing her drink. Stupid hick screwed up my screwdriver again, she thought with a sigh as she sipped and tasted apple juice. A few seats over, she could hear one of the regulars yammering on about some piece of trivia, but couldn't be bothered to correct him."

  • Winter Interludes, by Chris Tucker: "A few moments later, armed with suggestions, Daria was off to the cafe car. Jane leaned over the table and spoke to Connie. 'Let me bounce something off you. Daria's been through wringer these past few weeks. How about tonight, you spend the night at my place, let her have some private time with her family. What do you think?'"

Indiana Trent and the Band That's Thinking About Changing Its Name

Sixty-six years ago today, film writer-producer-director George Lucas was born. Thanks to him, we have more Daria/Star Wars crossovers than you can shake a lightsaber at. I think we can stop with the crossovers, there are enough now, please. We don't have enough Daria/Indiana Jones crossovers, however. My favorite IJ quote? It's from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: "We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and X never, ever marks the spot."

PPMB
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Scarlett's Tale, by Doggieboy (Part 18.5): All three walked together through the field and remained side by side. Neither human said anything, and Scarlett couldn’t detect any discernible thoughts from the cat. Suddenly the field gave way to a city street and the three stopped. The homes around them appeared abandoned and damaged. Most of the cars that were appeared damaged and covered with a film of dust. The girl looked at one house and her mouth dropped open as she recognized the home of her friend, Kristy Barton. We’re in Lawndale... but why?
  • Daria: Hunter 6—Infectious, by Jim North (continued): "My specialties are biology and nanotechnology." Ted reached into a pocket on his lab coat and pulled out a packaged pair of sterilized gloves, tore the plastic seal, and put them on. "Speaking of which, I heard that one of you has gotten a nasty little bite from our ambulatory deceased!"
  • NEWER! Eye of the Beholder, by Yogi (Part 1): “This,” said Helen Morgendorffer, putting a sheet of paper full of neatly formatted text down on the table “Is an example of an ideal resume for college and scholarship admissions.” Daria resisted the urge to yawn, knowing it would only make things worse. She did not want to spend Saturday morning like this. Granted, she didn’t really have anything planned for this weekend, or for any weekend for that matter, but listening to her mother lecture her on her lack of activities was getting rather old. “And THIS,” Helen continued, putting a sheet of paper with much less text beside the first “Is YOUR resume."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 46: Shields Up, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 3): “For this next project,” Janet noted, “you’ll be working in pairs.” Janet had thought of a number of things to say to this recruiter woman that Skinny mentioned was interested in Finn, that useless male. He did not deserve to have such people interested in him. The XY was proof enough of that. But, as she was thinking up the things, she realized she had no idea who this recruiter was... So her approach needed to be different, and that’s when she settled for the one weapon a teacher had: grades.
  • From the Darkness: A Young Artist's Dream, by Civanfan (COMPLETE!): My first impression of Lawndale was a fine image of picture-perfect suburbia. Boring. I was supposed to meet up with whats-her-face at Pizza Prince at noon, but apparently she wasn't under the same impression. I was considering whipping out my knife and carving a Paul Klee imitation into the table, when I heard a voice call me by name. She, an attractive woman of about twenty-seven, had finally showed up twenty minutes late in worn blue jeans, a plaid shirt, and a smock with wet clay all over it. Her hair was in a polka-dot kerchief, and from the look on her face, I knew the first words out of her mouth would be an apology. "I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry!" She covered my hand in clay when she shook it. "I was working on a piece for a charity auction, and I suddenly remembered this interview." I shrugged. That's art, I said.
  • The Game Called Life, by Trscroggs (continued): "What the hell happened anyway?” “Somebody made a wish,” the Old Man said, “on a greater artifact, while standing at a reality fulcrum, during a celestial alignment.”
  • NEW! A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (Part 11): “So, what's Kevin's number?” Daria had tried to make it a joke, but her voice took on a nasty edge. Colleen's smile didn't change, but the tone of the conversation somehow did. “Careful, Daria. If you ask that question again, I just might answer it. And I'm not sure either of us could handle that.”
  • Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): Daria sighed deeply as she leafed through the paper. "Cheer up, amiga," Jane said. "It's just one summer of slave labor, and then you're back to the old college grind, right?"
  • Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): "You know, there's one thing about this satellite that worries me."

Indiana Lane and the Mystik Temple That's Thinking About Changing Its Name

Sixty-three years ago today, George Lucas was born. Thanks to him, we have more Daria/Star Wars crossovers than you can shake a lightsabre at. Thanks, man! And we can stop with the crossovers, there are enough now, please.

This is also, more or less, the 743rd birthday of celebrated medieval computer-game designer Dante Alighieri, whose greatest creation was Daria's Inferno, based on some other work Dante wrote a few years earlier that no one remembers now. u R0k, d0oD!

Also today in history, Israel was founded, Skylab was launched, and Jamestown settled. Go look it up.
