I Vant to Try on Clothes!

Sandi's trying out a new hairstyle and fashion choice to honor the late actor Bela Lugosi, who was born on this day in 1882. Lugosi was best known for his iconic portrayal of Dracula, but he was also (infamously) known as one of the stars of Plan 9 from Outer Space, a film that most likely made it into one of Daria and Jane's Bad Movie Nights.

I suppose Daria should let Jane pick the next movie, though because today is National Lane Day. I don't suppose there is a National Morgendorffer Day, though, so maybe that isn't fair. Jane has to share anyway, however, because it's also National Jeff Day and Jeffy would probably like to have a little attention...at least from a certain redhead.

If Jane chooses a movie Daria doesn't like, she could always spend the time working on a new Melody Powers story in honor of National Day on Writing. Assuming that her Musings rejection didn't sour her on the whole thing, that is.

Fanfic Update!
  • Jim's Wet Nightmare, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Jim was in the garage working on a 1957 Chevy Bel Air while tripod mounted cameras recorded the process."

  • Moronic partying, by RĂ©mi (COMPLETE!): "Daria and Quinn were walking to school. The two girls were holding hands but, since Quinn was always more enthusiastic about things than Daria, the latter was lagging behind and being pulled forward by her little sister." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Run, Timmy, Run, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "The Fielding football players who'd stolen the Glenfield Wolf costume have just placed it in the team's storage room. Once that was done, they walked out and closed the door behind them." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Spider Quinn 12 Rise of the Green Goblin, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "As she sat down for dinner, Helen noticed something different about Daria. 'Hairclips, Daria? I’m happy that you’re changing something up.'"

A Day for Great Books

Two great and long-lived works of literature are connected with this day. Today is the day that Odysseus supposedly arrives home in Ithaca after the Trojan War, 3,188 years ago, as calculated by an astronomer a few years ago. Homer recorded the story in The Odyssey. Daria at left holds another work in which Odysseus was mentioned, Homer's Iliad (as seen in "The Big House").

This is also the day, 623 years ago, when Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales supposedly takes place, going by time-related clues left in the manuscript. (An editor figured it out.) Jeffy at right holds a copy of The Canterbury Tales as he tries (and fails) to enact the part of Palamon (as seen in "Fair Enough").

Daria would celebrate the day by reading. Perhaps imitation of her would be wise.

Some timely advice from Mr. O'Neill

The alter ego at left is what I felt like after taking the Graduate Record Examination this evening. Jeffy is of course Quasimodo from the 1996 Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (at right), complete with red hair, green tunic, and sock-like cloth shoes. I like Jeffy's nailed walking stick, however. Wicked. And he has a better haircut than the Disney guy.

Anyway, I finished the GRE and felt quite the abused soul, more to the point like a pinheaded Neanderthal moron, so I skulked back to my lair to lick my wounds (eww) and mourn my shattered dreams of world domination. And the words of the immortal Timothy O'Neill from Is It Fall Yet? rang in my mind:

"And for those with less, uh, robust scores,
there are still wonderful opportunities in
the food services sector."

Isn't it funny how something from Daria will come to you like that in those moments when you need comfort most? I love it.

More stuff to come. Hope to get all the fanfic listed and posted this weekend. See you at the Burger World drive-through window!

P.S. Queen Jossie finished "Y 2 Day?" nine years ago today.

Monkey Business

Teacher John Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution on this date 83 years ago. Jeffy, Joey, and Jamie are here with us to commemorate that historic backward step. Darwin, by the way, got mentioned in Daria.

"Darwin's the monkey guy, right? I like monkeys."

—Kevin Thompson, "The Old and the Beautiful"

Also, Ernest Hemingway was born this date 109 years ago. He, too, got mentioned in Daria.

"Now remember, your Hemingway essays are due in one week. And this time, Stacy, it's Ernest, not Mariel."

—Mr. O'Neill, "Daria Dance Party"

Random Fanfic Idea #12

One afternoon, while the Lawndale Lions are on their bus being driven to a football game at another school, Something Peculiar Happens. The story can go in any direction, but the Lawndale Lions must work together to resolve the situation, whether they have been kidnapped by aliens, discover an old ruined mansion with a laboratory and a monster in the basement, rescue a cheerleader in distress, rescue Coach Gibson in distress, get arrested for mooning passing traffic from the bus windows, etc. Mack, Kevin, Jeffy, Joey, Jamie, Robert, and the rest have a real challenge before them. This is a great way to develop some of the background characters as well.

Stories about the football team are not common, though Crusading Saint did an excellent job with "Trophy Chasers." If anyone can think of other fanfic about the Lawndale Lions, drop a note here, and give writing a new story a try, too.

Extra Notes: As far as can be told from watching various episodes, only one other black player is on the team besides Mack. The Fashion Club appears to date many if not all of the players, per Sandi's comments in "A Tree Grows in Lawndale." Only Mack has a grade-point average above a C.
