For Daria, It's Safer Than Driving

Daria and Jane are taking absolutely no chances on Walk Safely To School Day, because you never know when a crack in the sidewalk or a pebble in the path will trip you up. Of course, the real danger is a crush pulling up next to you and embarrassing you to death.

I sure hope Helen calls Linda Griffin to wish her a happy National Linda Day, if only because she's Helen's favorite Linda who lives in Lawndale and is the mother of one's of Quinn's friends. If she's lucky, she might get to hear that story about interviewing Rosalynn Carter. Again.

Fanfic Update!
  • Homecoming, by davidfalkayn (part 25): "'School starts tomorrow.' Stacy sighed as she changed out of her sleepshirt and into her clothes for the day—jeans and a pale blue t-shirt. 'That means Quinn should be calling anytime now.'"

  • Movin' On Up, by wilddogjj (part 2): "Angie was packing her things into boxes in order to move them into the house she'd just rented. Her parents, Kevin and Brittany, were trying to process the bombshell of her moving out."

"I'm pretty damn good. How are you?"

This is American Business Women's Day in the U.S., and Linda Griffin is our image person. This is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the American Business Women's Association, and Mrs. Griffin is on the board of the Lawndale Businesswoman's Alliance (per "Gifted"), making her the appropriate choice. Nice blouse color, love that shade of blue. Interesting to listen to her with that slightly deeper, nasal Sandi voice. (The same voice actress, Janie Mertz, did both mother and daughter, as was done with Helen and Quinn and another voice actress.)

Let's see, what else... oh, today is the anniversary of the mysterious Vela Incident in the South Indian Ocean, wonder how that can be put into a Daria fanfic.

It is also OneWebDay! Hooray! This is supposed to be very important to web freaks like you and me, but every day is special on the Internet. Still, there is a pledge to take. Not sure Daria would do this. It would mean she was taking a position. However, all she does is complain, so maybe she would. Whatever.

I think we've run this into the ground. Take us out of here, Mrs. Griffin.

Moar gnus l8r.

LAST NOTE: Did you love that tired roll of the eyes that Linda gives in "Gifted" when Helen is going on about "the stick"? Linda is such a babe.

No, not her, either.

Linda Griffin, though she has a kind of an aggressive guy attitude, enjoys positions of power over other women, engages in constant games of oneupmanship, and knows how to properly shoot a bow and arrow, is not a lesbian. She's just Sandi Griffin, grown up, and Sandi isn't a lesbian, either. Ain't happenin', sorry.

For the shocking answer as to who on Daria was an actual real no-kidding lesbian, click here. Be prepared to be amazed, because there was more than one!

That Helen-Linda Rivalry Thinger

So, what was it with that snarky Helen-Linda competition that seemed to be going on all the time, like in "Gifted" and "Fair Enough"? Was that supposed to be a reflection of what was going on between Quinn and Sandi, some kind of power struggle, like daughter like mother? Because Helen was no threat at all to Linda, but Linda kept firing off these subtle and not-so-subtle put-downs and self-important pronouncements, so you start to wonder, what's going on with Linda? Helen's acting pretty normal, all things considered, so maybe Linda's got an inferiority complex which has no basis in reality, as far as I can tell. Linda's kicking butt at her work, it sounds like. Is she living out her life through Sandi, then, so that's why she feels threatened by both Quinn and Helen? Linda really gives you the impression she's not a nice person, though she doesn't commit any horrendous crimes. Fanfic writers don't like her, that's for sure. Weird.

That Old Black Magic Has Lost Its Charm

Helen to Quinn: “Maybe you can stay at Sandi’s . . . even if I have to call that witch, Linda.”
— “Gifted”

Tad: “You're a mean old witch!”
Sandi: “I am not old!”
— “I Love a Parade”

An interesting AU idea: What if Sandi and her mother really were witches? They can't be very nice ones. How would the Dariaverse have been different? Linda seems to have been very successful in life, but Sandi less so. Perhaps Sandi is just an inexperienced witch, prone to make mistakes and suffer spell backfires. Interesting possibilities for crossovers with Harry Potter, Bewitched, Charmed, etc. This idea has been tried only once, that I know of, and it is ripe for revisiting.
