More Saga of Bob, Part MCMLXVII

Okay, you knew this time would come. It's time to...

IDENTIFY THE MYSTERY CAR!!!

Here's Bob's car from "The Invitation." It is a convertible, green, and has square headlights.

What kind of car is it? I have no idea. Name the make and model, maybe the year, anything else you can think of so we can use this in fanfic.

Enjoy.

The Saga of Bob (con't.)

It's been a while since we've talked about Bob, one of the background characters, but I can now officially tell you more about him: he smokes and drinks.

Yes, in "Jane's Addition," Bob is seen lighting up a cigarette (tobacco, I assume) and drinking (alcohol, I assume) at a bar where Mystik Spiral is playing, even though he is in 11th grade at Lawndale High. I still think he's a punk wrestler/ weightlifter. Your mileage may vary. For more on Bob, click the tiny label "bob" below.

Do you get kind of a film noir vibe from this guy? Something kind of dark and eerie and mysterious, something unexpected. Has anyone used him in fanfic? He's a great blank slate. I have a pic of his car somewhere from "The Invitation," will post it later.

Lawndale Online is still down. Damn.

While over at DariaWiki, I started thinking that there weren't near enough Daria Universes on the Daria Multiverse page. Can you think of more to add? I know some good ones have been left out. Let's make this page the longest one ever!

FF.net
  • Meet the Monster, by medea42 (COMPLETE!): Reads like the show. Loved Trent's method of making Quinn go away. Brilliant.
  • The Young Switcheroo, by Smileyfax (Part 8): We continue through the first season of this wild, switched-around world, now at "Cafe Disaffecto." And we learn who the thief was! And more!

PPMB
  • She Knows Not What She Does, by psychotol (COMPLETE!): Daria's loathsome new career as a telemarketer proves to have an unexpected side benefit.

SFMB
  • In the Midnight Hour, by Gum Wars (COMPLETE!): You know, I wasn't sure whether to post this one, but I figured hey, it's there, you may as well look at it.

Dawn's Only Speaking Role in Daria

Well, "speaking" is perhaps too liberal a word. She's on the far left, singing "Oooh, oooh!" along with Bob (next to her in the back row), one of the Jennifers (far right, front row), and four other backgrounders in the musical Daria! Still, she's making some kind of noise, like Jennifer the Burnout Girl shrieking briefly when she fell off that trampoline.

Daria! violated the fourth wall, everyone acted like actors and not "real people," and Daria and Jane sang (Jane, who could not even warble "Old MacDonald" properly in "Jane's Addition"). Still, a few useful things came from it, like Daria and Jane getting to the high school roof for the first time, where they showed up in later episodes.

It's still too weird for me, but I dig out anything useful from it that I can. So it goes.

Mr. O'Neill's Class (Part 1)

Some of this confirms previous guesses at who is named what, but new material will be added.

In the first picture above, from "The Misery Chick" (showing exactly the same class arrangement as in "Cafe Disaffecto"), we have from left to right: Jennifer, Brittany, Bob, Jennifer.

The second picture, from "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" (once again showing exactly the same class arrangement as in "Cafe Disaffecto"), we have from left to right: Jennifer, Zack (previously hidden behind Brittany's head), Jennifer, Jennifer (Burnout Girl), and Kelly. Bob is now hidden behind Brittany's head.

The last picture, from "Cafe Disaffecto," is: Josh.

Daria Deciphered

A couple weeks ago I purchased a copy of the second Daria VHS released by MTV, Daria Disenfranchised. I started watching it tonight and shortly came to the spot in "Cafe Disaffecto" where Mr. O'Neill is looking at his second-period seating chart....

...and I copied it down after blowing it up on the TV screen. We had a thread on PPMB before about this seating chart as it names so many students who are normally nameless background characters. Here is the first-season seating chart for Mr. O'Neill's 20-student class, which reads (top row is the back row of the class, as seen by the teacher):

Bob ------ Kelly -------- Les ------ Rob ------ ???
Zack ----- Jennifer --- Dewey? -- Adam ---- Josh
Jennifer - Jennifer --- Jenna? -- Jane ----- Daria
Mack ----- Brittany --- Kevin ---- Jodie ---- Haley

The name of the girl in the far back right cannot yet be deciphered (seems to start with a T). I am reasonably sure that the other names are correct. In a while I will start posting the images of the students with their given first names, and let's see what we get.

The Return of Bob

Since I last wrote about Bob the background guy with green hair, I've seen a few other pictures of him in my files. At left we have him cheering the annoying DJs in "Jake of Hearts," and at right is an image from I forget which episode, in which a VERY neon-green-haired Bob is sitting with a girl in the auditorium (with Jane and Daria sitting behind the couple). The girl's name is (drum roll) Jennifer, being one of the three girls with that name in Mr. O'Neill's class in "Cafe Disaffecto." Could she be a sometime girlfriend?

So, now we know that Bob wears olive-green cargo pants with the legs ripped off, and Army boots, and God knows how or why his parents let him leave the house like that every morning to go to school, or how Principal Li puts up with it, so he must be really good at something that makes Laaaawndale High look good. He's about as alternative or punk as you can get, violating most schools' dress codes, but there he is.

If you can use Bob in a fanfic and explain all this, more power to you. Beats the heck out of me.

Meet Bob

This is Bob (the background guy). He never says a word in the entire Daria series, but thanks to Mr. O'Neill's seating chart in "Cafe Disaffecto," we know his first name. We know only a tiny bit more about him.

Bob has spiky green hair, a chain going from a piercing in his nose to his left ear, a ring piercing his right eyebrow, a necklace of some sort, a thick leather watchband on his left wrist, a tattoo on his upper left arm, a dull expression, a gray pullover shirt with the sleeves torn off leaving ragged shoulder edges, and long slacks or cargo pants. He is seen driving (recklessly, on his way to crash a party) in "The Invitation" while a friend screams out the passenger window. His build looks muscular. He hangs out with other Lawndale High School kids here and there. He first appears in "Esteemsters," sitting behind Daria in the self-esteem class. (How'd he get there? Probably his appearance did it.) He usually sits in the back of the classroom.

Some guesses about Bob: He's a wrestler or weightlifter (or both). He's not terribly bright but knows how to have a good time (though he gets into trouble). His appearance is off-putting. He's been going to Lawndale High for a while, since he wasn't in the group of new students with Daria and Quinn in "Esteemsters."

Any ideas for using him in fanfiction?
