Gimme Some Chocolate, Dammit!

I think that Mrs. Johanssen must have misheard because although it's Make Mine Chocolate day she appears to have asked someone to "make ME chocolate." I'll have no problems celebrating this one, especially as today is another one of my favorite holidays: discount candy day.

Yesterday, of course, was Valentine's Day, but today we flip the script and celebrate Singles Awareness Day instead. Daria has plenty of experience with this one, and I'll bet she prefers it that way. Especially after her multiple spectacular failures in dating throughout the show.

On this day in 1999, "Daria Day 99" aired on MTV. There don't appear to be any clips or even a transcript out there for this one, so any Daria treasure hunters should consider this the Holy Grail of Daria finds!

Half Price Candy Sounds Good To Me!

Don't look now, Daria, but you're about to involuntarily celebrate Singles Awareness Day. If it's any comfort, it won't be long before she and Tom make Jane celebrate Singles Awareness Day.

Honestly, I think Daria would be better off taking her own advice from "What I Think About Valentine's Day," which appeared in the Huffington Post on this day in 2012. That is, she should go get herself some of that sweet discounted chocolate.

On this day in 1999, "Daria Day 99" aired on MTV to kick off the third season. I don't think there was anything about dating or chocolate involved, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there about the event, so who knows?

Fanfic Update!

The science teacher turned around to see Daria stood behind her in the hallway as students walked past them to their classes holding a clamp folder and a large ziplock bag containing the envelope her homework assignment was in with appropriate hazard warnings on it."

  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 11 and 12): "Cynthia lay wide awake in her small, solitary room down in the Depths. She could not have guessed the hour, unaware even if the Sun had yet managed to rise or if the outer world still slumbered in darkness." (Part 12)

It's Lupercali-fragilsticexpialidocious!

Yesterday was St. Valentine's Day, which apparently began as a Roman love-lottery for young people. Today is Lupercalia, which is a much older and far more kinkier (not necessarily in a good way) fertility celebration the Romans particularly liked. Reading about the origins of the word "February" gave me a completely new view of the whole affair. Thank goodness we now send cards to loved ones instead of whipping them with strips of dead goat skin. At left we see Beavius Maximus (wearing the traditional goatskin toga) about to indulge in Lupercalia frolics. In his dreams.

As a prelude to its third season of Daria, MTV had the Daria Day 99 marathon of episodes eleven years ago today. It began at 10 a.m. and went all day long. Sorry now that I missed it. Coincidentally, C.E. Forman completed "Alienation Legacy" that same day.

The entry for canon-character Robert at Backgrounders has been updated and appears to be complete (for the moment). More Backgrounders info to come!

Hmm, I didn't realize that the old fan page for Daria on Facebook had mutated into the official MTV fan page. Works for me. (Note to MTV: Thank you for the DVDs!)
