Brown Dog, Ground Hog!

Everyone wish Lawndale's luckiest bulldog a happy National Brown Dog Day! Seriously, though, that little guy should be glad he escaped Daria's driving in one piece.

Speaking of brown furry critters, today is also Groundhog Day, in which we as a society trust an oversized rodent to predict the weather. I feel like this isn't so much a holiday as a cry for help.

Charlie's Groundhogs

Looks like Quinn's rethinking her hairstyle choice, even if it was super popular when the late Farrah Fawcett, born on this day in 1947, wore it. Still, an Angel's gotta do what an Angel's gotta do. Even if it isn't fashionable anymore.

If you're wondering what the future holds for weather, you could always ask a large rodent his opinion because it's Groundhog Day and, why not? I've heard of weirder things, anyway.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 29): "'Bless me, Mother, I have sinned.' 'Yes, my child.' 'Mother, I was tempted today to leave the order.'"

  • Into Dust, by gracelikesdaria (part 1): "The red numbers blinked viciously at Daria as she strained her neck to check her alarm clock from her position on the floor, the movement becoming the only sign of life to be witnessed from her in the past half hour."

  • Sunspots, by atiyatortilla (part 2): "Two weeks into the school year and Jane hadn’t spontaneously combusted. Yet."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Comrade Mad Dog), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "It always started with the hydrangeas. Him and his buddies, sitting there in stifling, comforting boredom while the old ladies droned on and on about flowers, the thick rain outside making a rat-tat-tat not quite like machine gun fire on the hotel's windows."

"Go, teams, go!"

Looks like the football team is getting a head start on celebrating the Super Bowl taking place later today. Or they're just really excited about the school review meeting Ms. Li announced.

For those less interested in sports, today is also Groundhog Day! You know, the day where we expect a large rodent to accurately predict the weather? Oy. Maybe we'd all be better off going to that school review meeting.

Six More Weeks of Bubbles!

I don't know if the groundhog saw a shadow on Groundhog Day, but it appears that Mr. DeMartino did. I guess that means six more weeks of a Barch ass-kicking. The rest of us can turn to the forecast, rather than rodents, to check the weather.

Ted will be pleased to know that today is also Bubble Gum Day. If regular chewing gum blew his mind, just wait until he gets to try the bubble variety!

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 25 and 26): "School let out that day at the usual time. Still, it was obvious that things weren't usual. The sports teams that practiced after school in the athletic fields weren't outside; practice had been canceled." (Part 26)

  • Reflections, by Lady Evil (part 13): "'WAKE THE HELL UP, GREEN!' shouted Joshua. Jane gave a rather unmanly shout before trying to cover it with a cough. 'Uh, sorry, sir!' she said gruffly."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries : Thread #2), by Roentgen (parts 95 - 97): "'Daria, this is Jodie.' It was a telepathic message. 'Grr,' Daria said. 'What's wrong?'" (Part 96) (Part 97)

Did the Angel See Her Shadow?

Quinn's filling in for the late Charlie's Angels star Farrah Fawcett, who was born on this day in 1947. The Fashion Club did an homage to the classic TV show in "Murder, She Wrote," although as I recall it was Tiffany who got to model for the famous poster.

This is also Groundhog Day, during which a large rodent is expected to predict the weather. In case you're wondering, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, so it's six more weeks of winter for us. Hooray.

Okay, Maybe That's Actually Al Roker, but the Same Principle Applies, Right?

Today we celebrate the tradition of the weather-controlling rodent who terrorizes us all with his super-powered shadow. Or something. All I know is, the little guy did see his shadow today, so that means six more weeks of winter. Looking out my window, I can believe that. Stupid snow.

Fanfic Update!

  • Abattoir Blues (2)- The Killing Moon, by LongSnakeMoan (part 2): "I sit on what could be possibly the dirtiest door step in New York, the grit from the dirt digs into my thighs and I stretch my legs into the last of the sunlight as Rosie passes me a cigarette."

She saw a thin, blond-haired man jogging towards the back of the store, and glanced over to the clock. Three-oh-five a.m. She rolled her eyes again. Great."

Another Year, Another Rodent Weather Prediction!

Well, the groundhog didn't see his shadow yesterday, so that means an early spring this year. Unless it doesn't. Either way, I'm sure Bill Murray was happy to wake up this morning.

Late add: I also just found out that today is Super Bowl Sunday. In the words of Angela Li, "Go, teams, go!"

Time to Celebrate Weather-Predicting Rodents!

Happy Groundhog Day! Since the groundhog saw its shadow, it appears we'll be getting six more weeks of winter--to Daria and Jane's distress.

Those interested in Groundhog Day-related fanfic should check out Brother Grimace's Observational Skills. Also, magnuskrauss's Two Wrongs Make A Right and a Round Robin story begun by LSauchelli cross Daria over with the movie Groundhog Day. Enjoy!

Fanfic Update!
  • And Then it Happened, by Fhujeth_x (part 2): "The figure stepped closer to the too girls revealing himself to be what looked like a small, purple robot. Long orange helicopter blades shot out of his back panel, giving the illusion that he was at first some type of weird dragonfly rip-off. His blue eyes scanned over the two girls, 'You guys are screwed.'"

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 5), by oni (part 2): "As they walked up, Sandi greeted them, 'Morning girls.' Looking at them with a certain amount of seriousness, Quinn asked the brunette duo, 'You guys ready for this?' Sandi and Stacy looked at each other for a moment before turning back to Quinn. Stacy replied with a little bit of nervousness in her voice, 'As ready as were going to be.'"

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 5, by DeacBlue (part 8): "It was at that point that Jake rushed in. 'Girls! Helen!' he all but shouted. 'I've got great news!' Everyone turned to look at him. 'You've managed to corner the market on habanero peppers?' asked Daria. 'No, but almost as good. I was talking with G-town, and they wanted to take advantage of the notoriety that you girls have generated by holding a benefit for your legal fund! They figure that the exposure that both they and Mystic Spiral get will more than offset whatever they donate or lose out on for this one event.'"

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 25): "'Now Tilly, I hope you are not planning to start anything. Remember your first day of high school in Edgewood.' Sarah shook her head. 'I still feel sorry for those people.' 'Good times... good times.' Said Tilly, her smile getting bigger. 'Tilly, you can’t possibly think that taking the school counselor away in a strait jacket was funny.'"

  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (part 3): "I'm still here... When will be ending this dream? I opened a window to look the street, a resident was doing a little gardening at the other side of the street, I can also hear some people talking about the beautiful days of that end of summer. Everything was the same... Nothing has changed."

  • Epic Chase or Epic Mace? (Iron Chef: Daria meets Darwin Awards), by Fhujeth_x (COMPLETE!): "We all know that squirrels are some of the most agile creatures known to man AND beast. Their quick demeanor and almost instant reactions are always insanely difficult to judge, but this didn't stop Jake. No. Jake Morgendorffer as he was known, knew what he was doing. Those damn squirrels wont be bothering him or his trash bins anymore."

  • FBG, by DeacBlue (COMPLETE!): "In the halls of Lawndale High, Kevin carries a boom box on his shoulder, and is followed by Mack and the three J's. They walk up to a group of girls consisting of Andrea, Jennifer 2, Dawn, Diana, and Blue Denim. He sets the boom box on the floor, and turns it on. All the boys sing...."

  • Homeless Daria Episode 4: Cafe Dispossessedo, by RX-87 (part 5): "'Timothy? Is that YOU?!' A staccato voice called from the cell across the hall. 'Oops. I'll talk to you later, girls. Don't worry. I won't let them send you up the river.' O'Neill said as he quickly turned around and rushed to speak to a thin, twisted-looking middle aged man in badly torn clerical vestments."

  • Idiot or Savant :: After the Disaster (Chapter 1), by Fhujeth_x (COMPLETE!): "It was weird, really. Ever since the accident she noticed people had been treating her a lot differently. She'd not even talked to her friends from Middle School since they had found out she was in an accident. It's weird of them... She thought to herself before sighing, My mom said I almost died and now everyone is treating me like I'm dead." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Idiot or Savant :: After the Disaster (Chapter 2), by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "Her thoughts were interupted when she bumped into a familiar man in a pink shirt. Lost in a quick daze Tiffany glanced upwards to see it was Mr. O'Neill, who had come to her house a few nights before. 'Oh, Tiffany.' He spoke with his overly gentle voice, 'I'm glad to see you've come here. I was worried that you wouldn't make it.'"

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (part 7): "John said, 'Well then, let's get out there and educate the unwashed masses about art.' 'I think most of them are washed,' Daria said. 'But let's go.'"

  • Keep Out, by Jim North (part 3): "'You haven't even asked me why I want to go!' Quinn said, stepping forward and pointing her finger in Daria's face. 'Maybe there will be people there who won't give a damn about what I look like! Maybe there's more like Jane out there, and not all of them have to be outcasts no offense, Jane!' 'None taken.' 'We can't keep hiding from everyone just because someone might pick on me! I want this one thing, Daria! Let me just have this one thing!'"

  • Memory Lane, by echopapa (part 2): "'Dr. Zimmerman,' the commander said, stepping forward with an outstretched hand, 'glad you could make it on such short notice.' Lewis Zimmerman, a man of medium height with a fringe of gray around the back of his head, shook Maddox's hand. 'Thank you. I very rarely leave Jupiter Station, but your message was intriguing, and I couldn't resist. So where's the artifact?'"

  • A Mothers Love, by ash_blackfire (parts 3 - 6): "Out of the four that were in the car Amy looked to be taking it the best on the outside. The inside was another story. The loss of her sister and friend she had her whole life gone. Her dieing wish was tearing away shred of sanity she had left. Seeing the love and compassion Hellen had for her daughters and how they loved her back. Seeing what she had missed out on. The hole in her heart getting bigger the more she thought about it." (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • Sandi :: Well... This Sucks (Chapter 1), by Fhujeth_x (parts 1 and 2): "Sandi stared at the TV and then at her bandaged extremities. 'I'm starting to think I'd rather have been attacked by that naked man than that stupid whatever it was.' Glancing back at the TV Sandi sighed, using her uninjured arm to grab a hairbrush off the side table. 'I really hope this doesn't hurt my social life.'" (Part 2)

  • Seeing Red (Angst-off: Round 1), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "She had read up on it and was pretty certain that she had some kind of cancer. So she'd called her doctor, made the appointment, and now she was sitting here and willing herself not to cry in front of these people. She'd had to skip out on last period, but it was Language Arts. She already *knew* the language, so she didn't care."

  • The Skelton Girl, by oni (part 2): "With the same dead look that she had in the classroom, Mandy looked at the two girls and unemotionally asked, 'Can I help you?' Smirking, Jane replied, 'I know it’s easy to make O’Neil cry, but without saying a single thing through the rest of the class... damn.'"

  • Unnamed story (A genderswap never before done), by ThanatosRW (parts 1 and 2): "'I should have been a boy.' That is the thought that has plagued me my entire life." (Part 2)

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Daria, Jane and Quinn shared a look of disbelief as Kevin - tall, muscular and bearded as they had never seen him before - sloughed off the massive bearskin he wore for warmth against the supernatural Arctic winds and bellowed (in a Doric accent that rattled the walls) 'Get ready, ladies! We've fifteen-foot snow drifts outside, there's plenty of stout drink on hand, and I'm randy like a pack of wild unicorns who's balls have dropped!'"

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 18 and 19): "Daria faced Jane. 'My parents are sure I'm related to her, right?' Jane shrugged. 'Yeah, but they did drugs, right?' Quinn kicked Daria under the table. 'Since I'm buying dinner, you're supposed to be nice to me.' Laughing, Daria scooted her chair toward Trent. 'I'll be nice to Trent. He's making dessert.'" (Part 19)

Who Knows What Weather Lurks Ahead? The (Groundhog's) Shadow Knows!

It's Groundhog Day! The day when we inexplicably depend on the shadow-seeking abilities of a large rodent to determine our meteorological fate. They're pretty cute, though.

There appears to be only one Daria fanfic about the holiday itself: Observational Skills by Brother Grimace. However, magnuskrauss used a similar theme to the movie Groundhog Day in Two Wrongs Make A Right and LSauchelli started a Round Robin using the same theme last year. Unfortunately, it remains unfinished. Wouldn't today be a great day to kickstart it again? (Hint, hint!)

Also, the 2010 Daria Fanworks Awards winners have been posted! Congratulations to the winners and nominees!

The Groundhog and the Angel

How many years has the Daria fandom been around, and we still don't have any Groundhog Day fanfiction! It's amazing. It's like it's not an important enough holiday to write a story about, and it's got groundhogs! I give up. If anyone writes one, just don't imitate the Bill Murray movie. Do something original.

This is the birthday anniversary of Farrah Fawcett, the TV and movie actress who, with her fellow Angels, changed television forever. "Murder, She Snored" even has Quinn with Farrah Fawcett's hair!

Sorry, this was the best I could do

Would you believe it? Five seasons and two movies worth of TV show, and nothing about groundhogs. Squirrels, mice, etc., but not a single groundhog. I had to use an elementary school coloring sheet. There was a groundhog pet in "Darkness" (Upchuck), at least.

Groundhog Day: loved that movie.

Happy day to you. And this is post #1000 on the DFB2. Glad you could be here to see it.

LATE NOTE: Here is the official Groundhog Day website. I have no idea why I am adding it. Do with it as you will.
