They Have a Miner Problem

Looks like the three J's are taking National Miners Day to new heights...or rather depths. Maybe they're on the hunt for gemstones to impress Quinn? If so, I hope for their sakes that they bathe before they present them to her. Unless all they want to hear is a loud "EWWWWW!!!"

Today is also the anniversary of the Altamont Free Concert in 1969. It may have ended tragically, but at least Jake got a full refund. Somehow.

Fanfic Update!
  • A's fifteen minutes of shame, by ludma (COMPLETE!): "The coolest girl on the planet is in my class. She 's got a psychic who's pretty cool too, but she's bad ass."

  • The nap police, by ludma (COMPLETE!): "My best friend Daria, in our favorite pizza place! Thinner ans paler, but still alive!"

  • Reborn: The Origin Story Of Burnout Girl, by radiofox (part 7): "You won't believe what happened yesterday! So, I was walking home from the skatepark when some strange ghost woman appeared in front of me."

  • The wheel of torture, by ludma (COMPLETE!): "Here we are, at this stupid medieval fair, trying to escape to Upchuck, once more."

A Poem as Lovely as a Tree

Happy birthday to poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer, born on this day in 1886. The library in Lawndale was named after Kilmer, and I feel like there's probably a fanfic in there somewhere. Why Kilmer? Did he have some kind of connection to Lawndale? Or was it all just a ploy to make a cheap "tree" visual gag?

Today is also the anniversary of the Altamont Free Concert in 1969, which Jake not only attended but received a refund for. Gouka Ryuu wrote a short scene about it, and I would love to see more.

The Feisty Barkeep

It might be Bartender Appreciation Day, but I think Upchuck's going to need to provide a lot more alcohol than that if he wants to be appreciated by anyone. In fact, I'm not sure there's enough booze in the world for people to overlook that level of creepiness.

Today is also the anniversary of the infamous Altamont Free Concert on this day in 1969. Jake still has vivid memories of that day, or at least memories of that refund he inexplicably got.

Fanfic Update!
  • Back to Highland: A Daria/Worm Crossover, by Meester_Lee (part 9): "Butthead passed through the checkpoint and walked home. Somebody really had a bee up their butt. Highland was crawling with cops and soldiers. Butthead wondered what it was about."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 25): "Daniel did not realize it but his gaze passed many times from Sandi to his mother and vice versa. At one point the older woman laughed. Not an evil laughter, just a fun one."

  • Daria Does the DCU, by Lady Evil (part 2): "Jane was visiting her Cousin Lois again. She asked Daria to come with her. After what happened last time, she felt safer in Metropolis if she had a friend with her."

  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (part 176): "Daria Morgendorffer waited at the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. She hated the fact that she had to stand around and wait. There must have been a dozen people like her impatiently waiting with nowhere to sit."

  • My Cruddy Valentine, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'So, what’s the plan for Valentine’s Day, Tom?' Quinn asked on the phone. It was the landline as her own phone was still confiscated."

"I Think That I Shall Never See...."

Happy birthday to the late poet and library namesake Alfred Joyce Kilmer, who was born on this day in 1886. I'm not entirely sure why the writers went with Kilmer for the library name, although it's possible it has something to do with the lone tree growing on the library property. Any ideas out there?

Today is also the anniversary of Altamont, the free concert that ended in deadly violence. According to Jake, he not only attended the concert but somehow got a refund. I wouldn't mind seeing a fanfic based on Jake's experience at the concert, but perhaps some stories are better left to our imagination.

Fanfic Update!
  • Band of Mothers, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "Quinn pulled into the driveway and parked. She checked the social media apps on her phone one more time, then eyed the house in front of her warily and wondered if she could come up with a last-minute excuse to bail. God. I'm feeling pissed off and I haven't even laid eyes on Sandi yet. Next time we get together, I'm smuggling in booze."

  • Come Together, by Brother Grimace (parts 1 and 2): "No one saw the small, saucer-shaped craft simply flow into existence, as if it was heated wax that poured from nowhere into an invisible mold set perfectly atop the plateau and became a perfect form in an instant." (Part 2)

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 37a): "The girl in the row in front turned round to look at them. 'Didn't you make the video about the Kris Brocklethwaite story?' she said. 'What', said Dylan. 'Are you talking to us? I don't like the sound of that.'"

  • Harry Potter Morgendorffer, by Meester_Lee (parts 15 and 16): "The fuss about HJ's scar now behind the Morgendorffer family and the remainder of the fall term at J. Frank Dobie Elementary School went by without incident. HJ and Daria applied themselves with connecting letters with sounds, symbols with numbers, and stringing letters together to form words and were soon reading and doing arithmetic at levels well beyond many of their school-mates." (Part 16)

  • How cliche could you get?, by starwater09 (part 5): "'Hey Daria how's your day been?' Alex asked as she approached her friend in a bit of a huff. To Daria Alex looked exhausted but that was to be expected since she did have two tests plus an essay due that very same day."

  • Prometheus/Lingchi, by LongSnakeMoan (part 3): "The shadows from the soft light of the skittered and shifted from the breeze through the window, beeps and the rumble of trucks a distant soundtrack. The precious picture lightly gripped in her left hand, Jane used the right to scratch the fuzz on her head, the bristles oddly reassuring."

  • Unnamed story (LLH - Short Entries), by Roentgen (parts 66 and 67): "Daria had prepared the way ahead of time for Tom's return to Camp Legion. He arrived in Puerto Rico and immediately went to work. She started him on the 'heavy lifting' duties and figured that for the first few days he could work alone under the direction of the SPC and the Corps of Engineers." (Part 67)

"I think that I shall never see...."

Here we see Lawndale's Alfred Joyce Kilmer Public Library, named after the late poet Joyce Kilmer, who was born on this day in 1886. He is best known for his poem "Trees," although I don't suppose it references the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree. Or crutch.

In other Daria-related news, today is the forty-fifth anniversary of Altamont, the free concert that went terribly wrong. According to the episode "The Road Worrier," Jake was there...and somehow got his money back. The full story behind that little tidbit has yet to be told, but I'd love to see it written someday!

No new updates on the PPMB status, but keep up with the news on the Paperpusher MB twitter feed and chat with other Daria fans on The Sh33p's Fluff Message Board.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Aftermath, by metameric1 (part 1): "For someone who deliberately avoided trying to look good, the loss of her hair still disturbed her. A different person looked back at her from the mirror."

I Think That I Shall Never See a Library Lovely as a Tree

The Lawndale Public Library, we see on the right, was named after the late poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer, who was born on this day in 1886. Why? Not really sure. Maybe someone involved with the show was a fan.

Today also happens to be the anniversary of the Altamont Free Concert in 1969. The concert is, of course, infamous for the tragedy and violence that occurred there. It was also referenced in "The Road Worrier" by Jake:

Jake: Altamont! Terrible tragedy, but I demanded my money back and I got it.

Daria: Wasn't Altamont free?

Jake: That's the same line they tried to use on me!

Gouka Ryuu's excellent story fragment touches on Jake's experience at the concert, as well.

Fanfic Update!
  • The End of Her War (IRON CHEF: Daria in MASH), by malakite: "Franklin Piece had obviously gone nuts.He was singing yankee doodle in his boxers while dancing around the mess. She shook her head and wondered how long it would be for her."

  • Kim Possible: The Solo Missions, by Erin M. (part 1): "Kim entered the main common area of the dorm and went to a door behind the information desk. She knocked and waited. After a moment, a young woman in her mid-20s opened the door. She had shoulder length brown hair, glasses with thick black frames, and a somewhat sardonic expression."

  • T Story, by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "The Mr. T doll cautiously poked its head out from within the box. 'Hmm, so this is my new home,' it said gruffly. He scanned the room, one hand over his eyes. 'Strange, I don't see any other toys. Maybe this isn't the kid's room?'"

"I think that I shall never see / A poem lovely as a tree."

Happy birthday to the late poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer, born on this day in 1886. Kilmer is relevant to Daria as the person for whom the Lawndale public library is named, as you can see on the right.

Today is also the birthday of Steven Wright, born in 1955. We'll leave Luhrmann to do his rather good impression of the comedian, although Daria's delivery isn't bad, either.

Finally, on a sadder note, the tragic Altamont free concert took place on this day in 1969. Jake was apparently in attendance, per his remark in "Road Worrier": "Terrible tragedy, but I demanded my money back and I got it." Gouka Ryuu wrote an excellent short scene based on that line.

Fanfic Update!
  • Be Careful What You Wish For, by Doggieboy (part 4): "John opened the phone and said, 'Hello?' 'John?' Tananda’s voice said from the other end. 'You’re not Scarlett.' 'I know that.' 'Well, where is she?' 'Uh, she’s busy.' After a couple of seconds, she giggled. 'Oh, I see.'" (SFMB)

  • Daria 3000: Dye! Dye! My Mutated Abomination (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Don't you get it? The lady or the tiger -- now you don't have to choose?' 'What's a tiger?' Tom asked, clueless. 'A species of big cat. They went extinct centuries ago during the climate crisis of the late 21st,'"

  • The Lady and the Tiger, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): 'Hobbes bounced over and excitedly said, "You came back! You came back!' Daria looked down at the tiger. 'Yes, I'm back and, okay, you're real. There was nothing in the soda glass.'"

  • A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (part 23): "Putting his hands out, he added, 'Come sit with me.' Daria hesitated for just a moment, old fears of intimacy warring with current desire. This is why you wanted Colleen out of the apartment, stupid, she berated herself. Finally, she slid in next to him on the couch and, ignoring the parts of her that said no, pulled his arms around her. She half-smiled at his satisfied hum. 'This is nice,' she said, and meant it."

  • A QB Grows in Lawndale, by Kristen Bealer (part 11): "'Are you having trouble with your classwork?' Kevin waved off the question. 'It's not that. Um, what would you say if I said I was thinking about going into a teaching-type career?' Mr. DeMartino didn't say anything right away. He didn't even move. Then, his eye twitched very, very slightly. After almost a full minute of silence, he finally exhaled and said, 'I would say that sometimes life is just bursting with irony.'"

  • Quinn's Code 05: Morgendorffers vs. Amazon, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'You know, Daria, right?' Cindy asked. 'Somewhat, I know Jane more,' Jennifer said. 'That's mostly what Quinn said a few weeks ago. I thought it might have changed,' Cindy said. 'It hasn't,' Jennifer said. 'Oh,' Cindy said, as Jennifer turned off Glen Oaks Lane. 'Did you have a pont?' 'Yeah, do you know why Daria is hostile towards Quinn?' Jennifer was silent for a moment as she thought. 'She hasn't said anything,' she said. 'Quinn hasn't either,' Cindy said as she thought."

  • Tigresses of Lawndale (reposted), by taishigi (parts 9 and 10): "Quinn realized that she wanted, perhaps even needed, a real friend; a friend like Jane was with Daria. Not that Quinn would want Jane for a friend. At that point all the little pieces jumbled in Quinn's mind came together to form a picture. Quinn wanted to be friends with her sister." (Part 10)

  • Unnamed story, by neonhomer (part 1): "'We’ll take her to the Enterprise. Computer. Transfer the EMH program to the Enterprise sickbay computer. Dr. Crusher, you are needed on the Enterprise, medical emergency. We found Captain Morgendorffer. Picard to Enterprise, medical emergency! Four to beam directly to Sickbay.' Said Picard, giving no one a chance to get a word in. A few seconds later, they were appearing in the Enterprise Sickbay. The EMH reappeared, just as Dr. Crusher was appearing."

Of Trees, Concerts, and Fanfic

Today is the anniversary of the birth of the poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer, for whom Lawndale's public library (left) is named. Born in 1886, he is best known for his poem "Trees" ("I think that I shall never see / A poem lovely as a tree....").

Today is also the 55th birthday of Steven Wright, the comedian. Fans have speculated that the character of Luhrmann is based on Steven Wright because of their similar deadpan speaking styles. True or not, I bet Wright, Luhrmann, and Daria would get along fairly well.

Finally, the Altamont Free Concert took place on this day in 1969. The concert is mostly infamous for violence and deaths, thanks in part to the Hell's Angels being asked to provide security. According to "Road Worrier," Jake attended the concert. "Terrible tragedy, but I demanded my money back and I got it."

To my knowledge, the only time Jake's experience at Altamont has been touched on in any detail is in Gouka Ryuu's unnamed short scene. Lots of potential for fanfic there, though.

And speaking of which, howza about another fanfic update?

  • Bohemian Catastrophe ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Looking good, Trent,' Judith purred, watching as Trent stepped out of the Tank, his guitar still slung over his shoulder. 'Why aren't you running, like all of the other people?'"

  • But Now It's Time To Go ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Judith's charging up - I estimate one minute maximum!' Jamie looked to her with alarm. 'Doc Daria--'"

  • Dictat ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Not that I or the Society are ungrateful, Ms Knight, but it does seem a bit late in the day for you to agree your... colleagues needed to be taken down.'"

  • Eye on the Ball, by HolyGrail2007 (parts 8 and 9): "Back in his room, Finn was really angry. Mommy tried to gloss it over, but Finn knew better: She wasn’t sorry Daria made him miss his game, Daria wouldn’t get punished for it. She’d get away with it. Every time Finn did something bad, he got yelled at or punished, but Daria could yell at teachers and make everyone all sorts of miserable, and nothing ever happened to her." (Part 9)

  • The fiercest battles lie within, by VPrad (part 28): "He was alone. The rest of the guys had gone to the respective places they would use to enter the building with hopes of not being caught. Brittany’s plan, despite being the best they could aspire to, was too risky, and it all depended on him. He couldn’t screw this up, too many lives were at stake, he knew that. 'It’s showtime.'"

  • Genesis, by VPrad (part 2): "For a second, a wave of guilt overwhelmed her, her heartbeat accelerated, she felt again that all-too-familiar weight on her chest as she remembered the one time she attempted an inception. A single idea that had proved to be more destructive than anybody would have thought. A single concept that had torn lives to pieces."

  • God Save The Esteem Ep13: Art of Darkness, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "There was a hesitation on the other end of the line. Finally, nervously, her grandmother said: 'Could you put Helen on please?' Again, unexpected. 'I... I want to talk to her.' Daria swallowed and handed the phone over. 'Mum? It’s... it’s for you.'" (Part 4)

  • Holiday Roadtrip, by Chris Tucker (part 3): "'Brace yourself, Tran. You are about to meet... My Family. If you were to flee screaming into the darkness right now, no one would blame you.'"

  • The James Lane Chronicles Chapter 4, by InvisibleDan (parts 3 and 4): "Daria slammed the brakes. The sound startled the duck and it ran off, the ducklings doing their best to follow. The SUV stopped with only a couple of feet to spare. Daria started to chuckle at herself. She said, 'Perfect.' 'What?' 'I almost killed the ugly duckling.'" (Part 4)

  • Jane Morgendorffer, by LadieT (part 27): "Signaling for Trent to bring Quinn to the car, Helen stood in the parking lot staring her mother down. Not caring if anyone heard or saw them, the two squared off. Taking one more look at Quinn being consoled by Trent was all it took."

  • Legends Of The Metal, by TheExcellentS (parts 9 and 10): "Tom hopped off the bike and looked at his surroundings. He was at another altar, not too dissimilar to the one at the top of Killmasters Mountain, but instead of metal webbing, there were 5 large stone statues, depicting women in various battle poses. Underneath these statues stood Daria, and 4 girls he had never met before. All of them, except Daria, were blue and yellow shirts and jeans." (Part 10)

  • Life Beyond Highland (Iron Chef: Lawndale State), by LadieT (parts 1 and 2): "Although it wasn't her dream school Raft, Lawndale State had decent Creative Writing/Journalism program and her credits at Kilgore College would be transferable. With some hard work, she might go to Columbia for her Masters." (Part 2)

  • Screams of Silence, by (parts 6 and 7): "I awake to find myself alone in the bed. I don't have to look over to determine this. I can feel it almost instinctively. I'm prepared to write it off as nerves, figuring that Quinn must have gotten up for a glass of water or to use the toilet, but there's a paranoid whisper in my ear that's telling me that I'm wrong, an edge of unease that I can't seem to shake." (Part 7)

  • Unnamed story ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Her legs shattered Daria looked up at Judith and said, 'Why?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Why is Jake hugging Daria?), by VPrad (COPMLETE!): "Her mother looked disturbed, she could only look at the ground and seemed afraid to look Daria at the eyes. Jake was the vivid image of fear, but not the usual neurotic, loud-screaming kind of fear, he looked fragile, vulnerable, quiet. Whatever it was that was happening definitely had to be important. She sat in the sofa next to them. '“Mom? Dad? What’s going on?' She asked worried."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chief: The Prom), by Vukodlak (part 1): "They leaned and kissed again just as Helen popped her head in the door. Before the woman could speak her eyes zeroed in on the Prom tickets in Tom's hands. She exited just as quickly. Leaning up against the wall she gasped and a slight tear came to her eye. 'My little Daria is going to prom? willingly?""

  • The Vision of the Burning Cities, by jtranser: "Walking into the bar, She was confronted by the scene of Kevin, now a zombie, sobbing into his bandages after Jane made some particularly nasty cracks about him when he tried to hit on her: 'Kevin, let's face it, while you were alive, you were never anything more than a life support system for your dick. And now that's over too, even though you aren't able to realize it.'"

  • Worldburner: When It Rains, by RLobinske (part 4): "'Nova Valdris – Gone.' The news he'd received from the commander of the battered Ringbearer fleet still echoed in is mind. He had hardly started on writing his report when the fleet arrived and requested sanctuary. Judith had struck at them and struck with ruthless efficiency."

  • Worldhopper, by Erin M. (part 2): "The Tiffanito paused as it sent a message back to the Lawndale PD, and to the headquarters of the People for Proactive Popularism, the unspoken but recognized governing body of Lawndale, and, through its extensive political connections, the rest of the United States."

  • Worldsaver ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Helen put the phone down. 'Well, that's that: Rita, Amy, and my mother will be joining us for Thanksgiving this y-'"

"I Think That I Shall Never See..."

One hundred twenty-three years ago, a poet named Alfred Joyce Kilmer was born. A library named for him is in Lawndale, per the Daria episode "See Jane Run." Did you ever wonder why the scriptwriter picked that particular name? (Thanks to UU and Pinhead for the image, by the way!)

Forty years ago today, the disastrous Altamont free concert took place, and the Hippie Age of Flower Power ended. Jake Morgendorffer was there to see it. At least he got his money back.

Lawndale Commons closed its Internet gates this day ten years ago. Alas.

The guy that everyone thinks of when they hear Luhrman speak was born 54 years ago today: Steven Wright. Best jokes ever.

  • NEW! The Longest Night, by Vlora (COMPLETE!): Whilst flipping from channel to channel, Jane arrived on an advertisement for a Sick, Sad World marathon later that evening. A chuckle escaped her lips as she set the remote down, her hands tucked behind her head. "So we’re up for tonight then?"

  • Another Normal Day in Lawndale, by JPAGC (Part 2): "You represent the Fashion Club and the newspaper, right?" asked Helen. "And the French and the Tennis Clubs, too, because Susan can't make it, she is sick." Daria added, smiling. "That's my girl," said Jake, putting down the newspaper.
  • Finn Morgendorffer 18: Dance Fever, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): Heartless would have been a better word to use than cruel, Daria believed, but cruel was accurate in its own right. Finn changed girlfriends more often than his boxers and socks put together. He used them to satisfy his greed, which was legendary even by Morgendorffer standards. And in return, he gave them merely the “pleasure” of his company, whatever that was.
  • John Lane 44: Fizzy Logic, by Richard Lobinske (Part 3): Only a week later, Lawndale High had been transformed by a blur of yellow and green and the ubiquitous Ultra Cola logo. John said, "Is this what Quinn likes to call a makeover?" "Close," Daria said, "except that Quinn would show much better taste."
  • In Silence Sarcastic, by Trscroggs (continued): A few months ago, Daria wrote, I caught Dad adding half a bottle of Tabasco sauce to cold cereal, then adding a tablespoon of curry powder after that turned out to be too bland for him.
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: Heave to Position, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): Daria sighed as the elevator opened. Jane Lane stepped out. "Gracias, amiga. You're getting a tight little body there!" Jane reached behind Daria and slapped her on the ass.
  • Two Halves 3: Mall Rat Blues, by Dark Kuno (Part 2): “So, Mr. Ruttheimer,” prompted Alex to his freckled friend. “What’s the plan?” “Well, Mr. Morgendorffer, I plan to explore the advantages of a gold card,” Charles replied as, with brief demonstration of sleight of hand, he produced a glittery gold credit card.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "And Then Buffy Staked Edward."), by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): Edward Cullen sat at the poker table. He was down to his last chips. He put them all in on his pair of aces.

Miles from the Rebel base, Daria, Edward, and Buffy trudged through the snow. "We'll never make it back in this!" Daria had to yell to be heard over the wind's roar. Buffy turned toward Edward and gave him a half shove. "I know you got hungry, but did you HAVE to eat the Tauntauns?"

The End of an Era

Thirty-nine years ago today, the disastrous Altamont free concert took place, and the age of peace and love came to an end. Jake Morgendorffer was there to see it. Terrible tragedy, but he did get his money back. [cough]

Another era (almost) ended on this day nine years ago, when the webmistress of Lawndale Commons, one of the famed fansites of the late 1990s, threw in the towel and decided to turn off the site. (It apparently went down a few years later in 2003, the webmistress having decided not to throw in the towel until much later, thank heavens.) An essay written about this incident notes that flame wars drove several of the webmasters of the time away. Interesting. More on Lawndale Commons later.

One hundred twenty-two years ago, a poet named Alfred Joyce Kilmer was born. We were treated to seeing a library named for him in Lawndale, in the Daria episode "See Jane Run." (There's a little in-joke about that library's name. The DariaWiki link explains it.)

The guy that everyone thinks of when they hear Luhrman speak was born fifty-three years ago today: Steven Wright. I love his stuff. Awesomely funny.

Still working on spiffing up the blog. Needs more cowbell. Need to think. Hmmm. Suggestions for perking it up?
