"Fly with me, lesbian seagull..."

Engelbert Humperdinck turns 74 today. He is a popular singer best known in this fandom for singing "Lesbian Seagull" in Beavis and Butt-head Do America. Tiny 9th-grader Daria Morgendorffer was listening to this song with Cassandra and others when Mr. Van Driessen was beaten up by the ATF. Thanks for the music! (That's actually Mike Judge singing as Van Driessen; Mr. Humperdinck sings during the movie's final credits.)

May 2 is a critical date in Is It Fall Yet? As Richard Lobinske notes in his chronology of the Daria series, "The morning of the last day of school at LHS, Jake notes the frozen waffles had an expiration date of May 2, and it was June." There will be a test later.

NEW! Roentgen has started a thread about the secret code names of Daria's classmates, if they were fighter pilots.

NEW! Richard Lobinske has also just updated the 2010 Daria FanArt listing. Thank you!

  • NEWEST! Falling into College: The Clip Show, by RLobinske (Part 6): Our records show that DARIA L MORGENDORFFER has been assessed a fine of $1.00 – ONE Dollars and ZERO cents - for overdue library materials. Please remit payment to the Circulation Desk as soon as possible. If payment is not made within 4 (four) weeks of the above date, the fine will be reported to the Financial Services office and a hold placed on your account until payment is made.
  • NEW! Kim Possible: The Solo Missions, by Erin M. (excerpt): Kim Possible entered the main common area of the dorm and went to a door behind the information desk. She knocked and waited. After a moment, a young woman in her mid-20s opened the door. She had shoulder length brown hair, glasses with thick black frames, and a somewhat sardonic expression. This was Kim's boss, a grad student who worked as the Senior Resident Assistant, or as everybody referred to her, the "House Mom," a term which caused her no end of irritation, which is why it was in common use in the first place. "Oh, hey, Kim," she said. "Hey, Daria," Kim replied. "Just wanted to let you know I'm heading out for break. You need me to do anything before I take off?" (SFMB)
  • NEWER! A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (Part 10): "Are you going to start dating again?” The corners of Daria's mouth turned down. “Even if I wanted to, it's not like guys are lining up to ask me.” “Look around, Daria. I think you'll be surprised.”
  • Springtime for Self-Esteem, by Ajar (Part 2): “Angela, it's two in the morning,” Margaret said as she threw another booklet on the pile. “All these proposals are blurring into one. How did you get so many submissions, anyway?” “It's amazing what you can get done with cafeteria vouchers and threats of mandatory staff calisthenics."

Wasn't he the head Ninja Turtle?

One of the greatest fan artists of all time, Michelangelo, turns 535 years old today, hooray! And David Van Driessen is on hand to show his Highland High class Mike's most famous work, Beavis Goes Boiiinnng! (Sorry.)

Today is also Frozen Foods Day in honor of the frozen- then- microwaved lasagna that seems to be on Daria's plate at almost every meal. You think I am making up the Frozen Foods Day thing, but I am not. President Reagan made it so (see link).

  • A Brave Dead World, by 11tee (COMPLETE!): Her hands ripped the last vestige of the football jersey away, her teeth pulling at the flesh. There was a whimper as his life ebbed. Others were closing in for the fresh kill...
  • Finn Morgendorffer 35: The Fat Chick, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4): I have this sudden feeling that a great period in my life has just come to an end, and I never really enjoyed it, Finn thought to himself. [Just occurred to me that Sandi broke her leg in this story on the exact anniversary of the day she was shown breaking it in reality. Coincidence? I think not.]

Her Last Time There Was 11 Years Ago Today

Eleven years ago today, Daria made her last appearance on Beavis and Butt-head, in the retrospective episode, "Beavis and Butt-head Are Dead." (She appeared briefly in a nonspeaking role in Beavis and Butt-head Do America earlier, sitting on the floor as she listened to Mr. Van Driessen sing "Lesbian Seagull.") At the time of this last episode, of course, Daria was also starring in her own series and had completed the first season.

When Beavis and Butt-head fail to show up for school for three weeks straight, the school puts a phone call through to their home, where Beavis (who has been watching TV nonstop with Butt-head) tells the caller that the duo is dead, just to stop the phone calls. Mr. Van Driessen is heartbroken, of course, and tries to do a mental-health intervention with the class. However, no one is upset in the slightest that the two wienerheads are gone for good. The students merely look bored. When asked to offer her thoughts on the matter, Daria says, "Well, I guess it's kinda sad that they're dead and all, but it's not like they had bright futures ahead of them." Well put. The picture here shows her immediately after delivering her assessment of the two. The episode is amusing and has lots of bizarre flashbacks from previous episodes.

The Nameless Girl Is Named

Those of you interested in mining Daria's Highland years for new fanfic characters can add Kimberly to the list. It turns out there are two girls named Kimberly in David Van Driessen's classes with Daria (per Beavis and Butt-head). One is a redhead who was being bothered by B&B in "Sexual Harassment." The other is the punk girl to the left of Daria in this picture (sitting next to Cassandra).

I had thought for ages that the punk girl had no name, but it turns out that alert fan Napalm Kracken knew the girl's name from having played the computer game Beavis and Butt-head Do U, in which the punk girl appears and in the instruction book is named Kimberly. An image of her is available online, but note that her image is flopped left-to-right. (Someone in the computer graphics department wasn't paying attention.) Multiple sources online also name her (see here and here, for instance). Thank you, Napalm Kracken!

There is one teensy problem, which is that I strongly suspect that the redhead from "Sexual Harassment" really was, initially, the only girl named Kimberly in Daria's class, and whoever did Beavis and Butt-head Do U grafted the name onto the punk girl. It has been reported that the punk girl makes a smart remark to B&B in the computer game, and the remark appears to have been lifted whole from something the redhead says to B&B in another B&B episode No matter now if it was all in error: the punk girl is now officially named Kimberly.

There you have it. Enjoy your Saturday.

P.S. The episode "Sexual Harassment" is available for viewing online here (after the episode "Spanish Fly").
