The King He Is Not

Trent is trying out a new style of music in honor of the anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth on this day in 1935. Unfortunately for Trent, Elvis had actual musical talent, so the homage isn't likely to go very well.

Even so, I expect he'll keep Daria's attention and not just because it's Male Watcher's Day. Jane will probably join in if any cute boys happen by, but only because she's thinking of buying those shoes.

Be sure to dust off those QWERTY skills because it's Typing Day and I want those keys to start clicking! Jake might get distracted by the Panda Cam, but I have no doubt that Quinn will use her favorite emojis: Smiley face, surprised face, wink!

Fanfic Update!
  • 15 Years On, by DrT9999 (COMPLETE!): "Even five feet from the mountain's base, Daria wouldn't have guessed there was any sort of usable entrance to a cave system, except for the few traces of footprints in the meager gravel (most of the area was bare rock) leading into a small indentation in the rock face."

  • Heavenly wine and roses, by riotsquirrrl (part 5): "The previews for the art house movie theater are pretty basic and flash across the screen, advertising local businesses and coming features. Tom and Daria are the only ones in the theater."

  • A Real American, by wilddogjj (part 2): "Jim was angrily pounding on the door to his father's apartment. The reason for Jim's anger was his recent discovery of his true origin."

  • The Trials of Miss Morgendorffer, by TrentMckay (COMPLETE!): "The town of Lawndale, nestled among the rolling hills and bramble-choked woods of New England, was not a place for the faint of heart."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Sandi Griffin was dead. 'That was to be expected,' she thought. 'Can't live forever, although I was hoping that they would cure that.'"

Can't Help Falling Asleep

Trent's putting on a pretty convincing impression of Elvis Presley for the anniversary of the late singer's birth on this day in 1935. Sadly, the illusion will be completely shattered the moment he actually starts to sing.

Still, if he can pull off the pelvic moves then he'll probably get his share of attention on Male Watcher’s Day. Daria, at least, will probably pay attention. Jane will be looking for anyone wearing a pair of shoes she's thinking about buying. Yes, the shoes. That's all.

Finally, I am at this very moment celebrating Typing Day! I wonder if Quinn will do the same. Just remember her signature sign-off: Smiley face, surprise face, wink!

Happy Male Watcher's Day! Jane is celebrating with great enthusiasm, but I suspect Daria would not join her.

Also, happy birthday to the late (or is he?) Elvis Presley, born on this day in 1935. Whether you're a fan of Young Elvis, Old Elvis, or the bird from "It Happened One Nut," let's all take a moment to wish The King a good one--wherever he is.

The King and the Goblin King

Today's the day for musical birthdays--both Elvis Presley and David Bowie were born on this day in 1935 and 1947, respectively. Aside from the alter egos shown here, there isn't much in the way of canon references for either. One of the canaries in "It Happened One Nut" is named Elvis and St. Patrick's Day criticizes Valentine's Day's voice because "it doesn't even sound like Elvis." However, breitasparrow has provided fanart of Trent as the Goblin King, the role played by Bowie in the movie Labyrinth.

Want a fanfic update? Well, too bad, 'cause you're getting one anyway!
  • And Then There Was One (Iron Chef: Dieselpunk Daria), by Ravynstone (COMPLETE!): "Quinn pulled off her mask and goggles - the new, lightweight style guaranteed not to give the wearer 'racoon eyes' - and undid the scarf covering her reddish hair. Her mother was doing likewise, shoving mask and goggles into an oversized handbag and unbuttoning her long overcoat. Beneath it, Helen wore a knee-length black skirt and a lace blouse. Her widow's pin glittered against her pale breast, an eagle with bowed head and spread wings. She never took it off in public."

  • The Cards You Are Dealt, rejected ending (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): "The redhead stood there, an angry glare on her face and her eyes narrowed. She no longer wore her normal clothes, but instead wore a dark red and gold body suit with a gold bird decorating the chest. Her ankh still hung around her neck and she still had the stubborn lock of hair that hung over her left eye."

  • Falling Into Daria: An Interesting Start to the New Year, by Gouka Ryuu (part 3): "'As far as I believe, the omniverse, all of existence, has a universe for every possibility imaginable. From every choice every person in every universe makes to other scenarios. It's impossible for a unicorn to come barging in here, but I can guarantee you there are an infinite number of universes where one will appear right...now.' Nothing of course happened. However, in a universe both relatively close and an infinite distance away a unicorn did barge into the Morgendorffer domicile Kool Aid mascot style and started chewing on Quinn's hair, much to her delight."

  • First Briefing ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by RLobinske (COMPLETE): "She looked around and spotted Richard at his workstation, concentrating on a display. She walked over and near the room divider, said, 'Excuse, me. Are you Richard?' He swived the chair around and looked up. 'Yes. I'm a little busy.' 'Me, too, and I don't need your friends recruiting from my hypersphere. Do you have any idea of how hard it is to keep track of the Dalek timeline as it is?'"

  • The Fixer (Iron Chef: Dieselpunk Daria), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Ruttheimer sat in a small bistro in the corner of the station, eating and drinking the finest. It didn't have as many customers as it would at its height, but recession or no recession, they were alright, Johann (and you had to keep appearances up, wot?). But every time the serving staff could be heard saying something to each other in Belarusian, one of the customers would glance for a bit. They could be saying anything. They could be partisans."

  • Fugitive Chapter 1: Russian Heavy Metal, by Wassersauefer (COMPLETE!): "Perhaps I should get myself a Russian dictionary, she admitted to herself. A Russian killer-robot is living in my house. Okay, a nice killer-robot who likes to watch Sesame Street and hasn't killed anyone, but a killer-robot none the less. And I don't understand a word he is saying."

  • God Save The Esteem ep17: Bits and Pierces, by Charles RB (part 1): "'That offer of staying round my house is still there,' said Jane, as the girls waited in the security line for school. 'I didn’t want to impose. I've changed my mind though. Get ready to be posed.' Daria shut her eyes. “It's been a whole week since Weddignarok and those god corpses just lie there festering. Erin has only talked to anyone once, and that was only because Dad asked if she wanted some of his penne a la pesto. She said no.' 'That's just common sense.'"

  • Holiday Roadtrip, by Chris Tucker: "'OK, that's seen to. Get the clothes out of the washer and into the dryer tonight. Tomorrow after breakfast, check the weather and roads, pack, tearful farewells from the family, a no doubt embarrassing goodbye with Trent (if he's awake. Jane will make sure of that, knowing her.) hit someplace for food and drinks for the trip back, as well as money for tolls, and then off to New England. What unforeseen interference by reality will occur that'll make a mess of this best laid plan?'"

  • John Lane 48: A Boston We Will Go, by RLobinske (part 2): "'You're a pretty easy chaperone,' John said. 'Realistic. My job is to make sure you stay out of jail. Otherwise, you're adults who are responsible for your personal actions. Just don't wake me up with them.' 'Okay,' John said. 'I think we can do that.' Amy smiled. 'Besides, compared to your mother, you two are almost saints.'"

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie (Chapter 2), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "'I'm not hiding anything!' Torii said. 'Neither am I,' Andrea said. 'It is clear that you are hiding something. I'm hooking you up to the polygraph machine!' Ms Li said."

  • Lawndale Rumble (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by TheExcellentS (parts 3 and 4): "O'NEILL: 'Here's an unknown entity for you. This is Guy Crawford, and he's making his PPV debut tonight having defeated Spike Rose in the last chance qualifier last week.' BARCH: 'Bony little guy, isn't he? Looks like the heaviest lifting he's ever done is picking up the phone.'" (Part 4) (Part 5)

  • Life Beyond Highland, by LadieT (part 9): "Listening to Daria and Jane talking with each other made her thank the higher powers the site existed. Throughout that night, every time she received a text from Daria, she smiled. When Quinn arrived home with a bunch of phone numbers and email addresses, Helen knew that her daughters were going to be alright and hoped that someday she would be able to join them."

  • A loss in the family, by VPrad (COMPLETE!): "Quinn walked home alone, she couldn't stop thinking about the events that had taken place during the day. Right until that morning, she felt she had everything under control: she was popular, cute, the boys were literally fighting each other to date her... But the sudden death of a popular guy and the fact that she couldn't help her friend when she was going through a rough time was a reminder that she couldn't control everything." (Part 3)

  • Spirit of the Game, Nature of the Beast, by HolyGrail2007 (part 6): "'Thank you, Tom. This is part of the reason why I came over to America, to experience new things and have a little fun.' 'That's not the only reason?' Tom joked. 'No. Another is to find someone to enjoy it with. Good night.' Bianca smiled for a moment, and then kissed Tom on both of his cheeks. It shocked him, a little. Even on the cheek, a kiss wasn’t something most girls threw freely."

  • Stay Curious, PBS (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by Wraith (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, is that Ms. Li?' 'I like the new look.' 'Great. She's finally snapped.' Ms. Li was watching the construction workers with a smile on her face. And a shiny foil hat on her head. The girls were just close enough to hear her mutter, 'The damn PBS won't be able to get me now!'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Dieselpunk Daria), by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): "Jane reached for the bucket of tennis balls by the door of the hanger cum workshop, grabbed one of the felt covered spheres, and with a deadly aim born from years of experience, whizzed a sidearm fastball at the back of the steel and leather armored figure, leaning into the rivet gun on the scaffold 20 feet in the air. The ball walloped the back of the auburn-haired head. The reaction was as expected, the riveting stopped and a stream of sulfurous blasphemies filled the air."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Dieselpunk Daria), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "A feeling of exultant joy raced through her chest as she propelled herself out into the sky. Brilliant blue marbled with streaks of white filled every degree of her view, and her aural world became naught but the sound of rumbling wind as she cut through the air. She wanted to live in that world forever, a world of falling through infinite sky, but the pressures of reality had to be let back in eventually."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Dieselpunk Daria), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'Captain Lane,' the office said, transferring his glare from one woman to the other.'Frankly I find you to be just as distasteful as this . . . kraut. A woman's place is in the home, not flying fighter planes for the Army. I don't know why you get to be the exception, and . . . .' He stopped speaking when the door slammed open, admitting a tall black man in the full dress uniform of a United States Marine. His chest fairly dripped with ribbons and medals, and the look on his face said he'd earned every single one and didn't like remembering any of it. He quietly closed the door behind him."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Not that ol' Jakey should depend on anyone!' roared Jake. 'NO TRUSTING PEOPLE IS FOR GIRLS ISN'T IT OLD MAN!!!' A harsh, disembodied voice spake: 'Quit your whining, boy! Boys don't whine! MAN UP!' Jake's jaw dropped open."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by InvisibleDan (COMPLETE!): "Venkman: Okay, and for capture and storage of the beast I'm gonna have to charge five big ones. That's five thousand dollars. Jake: I can't afford that! Dammit, I should have gone to the other guys. They have a gorilla in a trench coat with a fedora."

  • Use Your Head ('Flashpoints': A Worldburner Mini-Fics Thread), by Raskolnikov (COMPLETE!): "They sure had cut the electricity of the house again. Always with their fees, and bills, and, and taxes, and... headed letters! Like they were playing their game! Damn it! She felt so outraged at the unfair situation in which the asskissing lackeys of The Man had put them (it’s always like that, they can’t stand free people), that she didn’t realize there were someone sitting in the couch, and even when she saw... her? It was a her?...the thought that a stranger sitting in the darkness in the middle of a house that should be locked can had something to do with the mysterious lack of electric fluid didn’t cross her mind."

  • Worldburner: The Fixer's Finest Hour, by Charles RB (part 1): "'Charles Ruttheimer the Third, Extradimensional Handyman!' He gave a salute as he hopped into his strange transport. 'And since I know exactly what you’ve done as a Provincial Party Leader, can I ask you to keep staring in this direction as I turn on the Jumpship engines?' Manfried actually did. To be fair to him, he didn’t know then that the light of a nuclear-powered craft tearing a small hole in dimensional space would blind you."

  • Worldhopper (Chapter 3), by Erin M. (part 1): "She crossed a street and stopped in front of a storefront display which held several TV sets, all tuned to KSBC. External speakers had been mounted form the aluminum awning over the sidewalk. A few people had gathered around to watch the broadcast. Daria hunched her shoulders and lowered her head, joining the crowd. Hopefully, whatever was coming on next could clarify things. It didn't. If anything, it made her more confused......and frightened."

ELVIS WEEK!

ELVIS WEEK! IT'S ELVIS WEEK!

No, really, it is. Trent helps out with the alter ego.

Gn00Z!
  • Brian Taylor brings us a new Iron Chef: Modern Day Daria. "Daria's first day of school at Lawndale High occurs during the 2009 - 2010 school year. And... go!" Much discussion there.
  • Ms. Kinnikufan offers up Iron Chef: Mr. DeMartino the Motivational Speaker. "After the events in Is It Fall Yet? Mr. DeMartino is approached by a publisher to write book about "If someone is doing something to irritate you, tell them about it in detail" way of dealing with low self-esteem. Apparently one of the publisher's children went to the "It's okay to cry corral" and benefited greatly from Mr. DeMartino's method. The very large advance is all it takes to get Mr. DeMartino to agree."
  • TOTALLY NEWEST OF ALL! Roentgen has created Iron Chef: The Misery Chip, with the challenge being a Daria/Star Trek TNG scenario.
  • Wanna make your own Daria T-shirt? Then do so. Thank you, Chris Tucker!
  • Wouter brings us another great artwork, this time of Daria relaxing in the sun. Excellent.
FF.net
  • EVEN MORE NEWEST! Broken, by Albatrocity (Parts 1 and 2): Daria sighed, deciding her need for coffee outweighed her want to continue lying in bed to reminisce. She sat up and stretched, her arms arcing over her head gracefully before standing and placing her glasses on her nose. A quick assessment of the apartment told that Jane had gone for her morning run, leaving Daria alone until she returned. That was... good, she could work on her article now. No fiend, er... friend to distract her. Smirking in spite of herself, she turned on the coffee maker and leaned on the counter, resting her chin in her hand to wait for the coffee to finish.

  • 2 Girls, 1 Camera, by rglovejoy (COMPLETE!): Sandi folded her arms and glared into the camera lens. "Stacy, I still don't understand why you need to record this." Stacy set the focus on the video camera. "It's for a project, Sandi," she said cheerfully. "Now, all you have to do is watch this Internet video and I'll be able to get your reactions, okay?" "Fine." Sandi turned her nose up. "What do I do now?" "Just press the mouse on the 'Start' button, That's right." Stacy hit the record button on the camera.
  • NEWEST! Bittersweet, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): It had been coming on for some time now. They had both known, seen the signals both obvious and subtle, but some things, as we all know, are difficult to let go. Like so many things, it started with a misunderstanding...
  • Finn Morgendorffer 55: Dreamer Without a Cause, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 6): “So, Daria, all ready to go tomorrow?” Henry asked as the two sat in her room. “Ready to have my work torn apart by critics?” Daria returned. “Since that’s not gonna happen, I get to say you’re worried for nothing!” Henry remarked cheerfully. Too cheerfully. “No, Henry, that’s their job. Maybe they won’t be at a newspaper or anything, but people watch movies to have opinions of them. They’re just gonna hate it.” “God, you’re so depressing sometimes.” “I’m being realistic.” “Realistic how? What, you’re expecting cinema or something?”
  • I Was A Teenage Sex Kitten..., by Erin M. (Part 2): The invasion itself was much like a gang of belligerent drunken dwarves with dubious personal hygiene: nasty, brutish and short. The Zippotronian saucers effectively decimated the military forces of the world, turning every last vehicle, weapon, and nuke into a vast buffet which was, under Jane's order's, delivered to the poorest counties in the third world so they could have SOMETHING to eat for once. Otherwise, things really didn't change that much. Jane was very much a hands-off benevolent dictator. She let the conquered get on with governing themselves, while enjoying her authority from the new global capital of Lawndale.
  • MORE NEWEST! Jane Lane: Ace Attorney--Turnabout Teacher's Pet, by LSauchelli (Part 10): Jane took a deep breath and a look around the room. This is it, this is the day. No one could blame her for feeling nervous. She spent a good deal of the evening trying to talk to O’Neill, but the man was nowhere to be found. He didn’t answer his home phone and his cellphone was dead. That in itself was suspicious, but that aside, it meant Jane couldn’t corroborate Barch’s alibi. She had to call Charles during the night to ask him to search for O’Neill, even if she thought the boss wasn’t going to be happy once the P.I. sent him his fees. “Would you stop fidgeting like you need to pee? You look like an idiot,” Sandi said, barely turning to look at her over her shoulder.
  • The Lane That Wasn't, by LadieT (Part 16): Jane closed her eyes for a moment as she thought about the old man's words. Just five minutes..300 seconds..I will need to make them count. She began to think out what she was going to say or do. She gazed back at the old man's face. He stared out straight into the distance. His emotions were unchanging. For the first time since she arrived at this place, she felt afraid. How can he just make me appear out of thin air? What is he? Is he an angel, a devil, or some other kind of worldly being out to destroy my sanity? There is just so much I don't understand. Jane started to speak, but the old man stopped her.
  • Legacy, by Getrealordie187 (Interlude 3): "I'm sorry. I didn't know you were in here." She stands up, wobbly on her feet. "Hmm. From what I just heard, you weren't very concerned about being anywhere else but where Rita wasn't. I'm sorry I haven't been around to watch Aunt Rita throw herself at you; watching her embarrass herself is like an episode of Dallas. Let me look at you." She staggers over to him and to his incredulity, the girl appears to be as drunk as the day is long. He frowns even as he moves to shake her hand. "I thought Rita was your mother too." He leans forward to sniff at her and confirm his suspicions and becomes even more alarmed at the way she backpedals from him to land on her ass. "Is that vodka I smell? Are you drunk?"
  • EXTREME NEWEST! Legacy, by Getrealordie187 (Part 4): "Hey, we're Mystic Spiral and we'll be back for our next set in half an hour. Oh and we're thinking about changing our name." Another day, another gig at the Zon. Sometimes he thinks that this is all he'll ever do with his life and most days he's okay with that. But sometimes when the fights with Nick and Max got a little too vicious and Jesse's a little too blank, he thinks about getting as far away from Lawndale as his feet can carry him. But leaving Janey to the tender mercy of his forgetful parents and the hounds of the IRS will never be his style so he pushes on like he always does.
  • MORE NEWEST! Li Don't Like Mondays, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): While DeMartino tried "patiently" to explain to Kevin that the Vietcong were neither related to King Kong nor Al Qaeda, the school intercom sputtered to life: "ALERT! ALERT! A SHOOTER IS RAIDING THE SCHOOL !" Tinny recorded sounds of a gun came over. "EVERYONE TO FALLBACK POSITIONS NOW!" "Dreams do come true," said Daria. "You wish," replied Jane. "Li does these things once a week, just in case a real shooter or a terrorist attacks us." "So she's annoying potential shooters to death?"
  • MST version of TAG's "Can't Touch That!" by Jim North (COMPLETE!): [Won't spoil it for you!]
  • MST version of TAG's "Daria 2007: The Girl from Hope" by Charles RB (Part 2): [Won't spoil it for you!]
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: ATTACK WARNING RED), by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): The school intercom screeched to life. "Attention: we are under attack." Jane rose from her desk and ambled to one of the classroom windows. "Hey, Daria, check it out!" Her friend joined her at the window....
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Modern Day Daria), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "In five, four, three, two..." "Hi! I'm two liters of cool, refreshing Quinn!" "And I'm a double 'on-the-go' pack of tasty, sugar-free Stacy!" "Mix liberally and add a healthy splash of our tech-guy Ted—"
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Modern Day Daria), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Now I realize that it's very difficult being at a new school," Jake said. "As difficult as it is to be pardoned as a American journalist trapped in North Korea. I'm just asking you to use a little diplomacy, like ex-President Bill Clinton used earlier this month." The car pulled up to the school. A girl walked up to Quinn, who had gotten out of the car first. "Hi! What's your name?" she asked. "Quinn Morgendorffer," Quinn replied. "Wait a second?" the girl in pigtails asked. "Did you say Quinn Morakot, after that typhoon that hit Taiwan three weeks ago?"
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Mr. DeMartino the motivational speaker), by Getrealordie187 (COMPLETE!): "And now for our next guest, who wrote a controversial book on self-esteem entitled, I'm Mad As Hell and Here's Why I'm Not Going To Take It Anymore, which quickly rose to the New York Times Bestseller list. Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for Anthony DeMartino."
  • A Very Special Edition of At the Fics with Daria and Jane, by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): "Jesus, it stinks in here! The carpets are ruined, we'll never get them clean. OK, girls, marks. In 5... 4... 3... 2...and we're on!" The two girls stood stiffly. They were wearing cheap plastic ponchos from Sears. The backdrop, chairs and set floor were stained with wet, brown lumps of something. From the look on the smaller girl's face, they smelled very bad. Both ponchos appeared to have hastily wiped off, as evidenced by the smears of a similar brownish matter. "Hello, I'm Jane Lane." "And I'm Daria Morgendorffer. We're the hosts of 'At The Fics with Daria and Jane." "I thought it was 'Jane and Daria' this week?" "No, remember last week it was just Tom hosting the show."

Elvis, Unplugged

Forty-one years ago today, Elvis made his best known comeback, a special shown on TV that became instantly world famous. And MTV artists remembered it and used it as a Trent alter ego, at left. For more information on this specific alter ego and what it shows, click here. Did you know that Elvis not only invented the music video (with the "Jailhouse Rock" musical number from the movie of the same name), he also invented the "unplugged" live performance with his comeback special? What a dude.

Found a recent online article about DVDaria. Nice to see the support! Go, Kara!

Born 61 years ago today is the Alter Ego That Should Have Been: the Oz. Why no Ozzy, MTV? Oh, well. Maybe next time.

A True Musical Holiday

This is a treat. Today is the anniversary of the birth of two music greats: Elvis Presley and David Bowie. Trent Lane at left does his best Elvis impersonation, and Jane Lane at right does her impersonation of the cover of Bowie's Aladdin Sane album (1973, see link for image). Hooray, Lanes! Hooray, music!

It must be said that if that Aladdin Sane pic went any lower, we would have serious NC-17 issues. That's Jane for you, always on the edge. Oh, and hey: her right ear is NOT pierced!

It should also be noted that MTV artists were often extremely specific in their choice of alter-ego inspiration. Trent is not just "doing Elvis." Trent is doing Elvis during his 1968 TV comeback special. Click the link and you will see why I say that. Jane doesn't do Bowie, she does a particular Bowie album cover. Brittany does Madonna from a specific award-winning video, Stacy does Christina from a specific Rolling Stone cover, etc. Artists are a picky lot, aren't they? These alter egos are more than they seem.

Today is also referenced in a certain Daria fanfic, which you may want to read. I didn't realize before that "bhut" on FF.net was actually "Bacner" on Outpost Daria. Good to see you around, dude!

LATE-BREAKING INTERNET NEWS:

  • "Something I don't think I'd regret if I had gotten it, is a duck phone. I don't know if they really exist, but I saw one once in the MTV animated series Daria. Instead of ringing, it quacked." (Tri-City Herald, Kennewick-Pasco-Richland, Washington)
  • "My all time favorite cartoon is Daria. It was something about Daria's and Jane's friendship that made it seem as if they were more than just friends." (AfterEllen.com) [Well, duh.]
  • "Cult series 'Daria' still not on DVD" (Connecticut Herald) [Well, double-duh.]

Remember: you saw it here first, maybe!

And today is special in other ways, but more on that later.

Tribute to a King

Also, I meant to say that according to some mythologies today marks the 54th anniversary of the birth of rock-and-roll music, when Elvis Presley recorded "That's All Right (Mama)" in the studio. (The record was not released until September.) Other songs have been benchmarked as rock-and-roll's birth cries, so the topic is a contentious one. Because I have a picture of Trent as Elvis, I'll go with that and not Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock." You may argue the choice in "Comments" if you wish. Or, you know, not.

This date is important to Daria because Daria was loaded with rock soundtracks . . . which, because of copyright issues, is the main reason why the show hasn't yet been released on DVD.

Kind of ironic or something, I guess.

  • Falling Into College 63: Broken Star, by Richard Lobinske (Part 6): "Trust me on this. I know what I’m doing." [Uh-oh. Continues to be an excellent chapter.]
  • Holding Out for a Hero, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): A songfic sequel to "Common People," with the potential for much angsty goodness to come.
  • Misjudgments, by NightGoblyn (Part 1): A new entry in the evil Jane thread. This looks quite realistic to me. Damn nice work, but how is it that Jane knows about the future? MOAR!
