"What does science know?"

It looks like Al Roker, or a weatherman who looks a lot like him, has a forecast for us all on his 71st birthday. As long as he isn't calling for a hurricane during the big Lawndale High pep rally, everything should be fine.

If the town does get blown away, the rest of us can hunker down in safety and listen to our radios for National Radio Day! Just don't tune into Bing and the Spatula Man if you value your sanity. Radio fans can also check out Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills's collection of "Free Radio Lawndale" fanfics! (Kids, "radio" is what podcasts were back in the olden days.)

Finally, happy birthday to the late author H. P. Lovecraft, born on this day in 1890. Not only was Daria likely a fan of his horror works, welltemperedclavier wrote two Daria/Lovecraft crossovers: "Minds Touched by Madness" and its sequel "Quinn in Yellow."

Fanfic Update!
  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 95): "The white and violet stars twinkled in a crystalline sky, it was december the 27th already and Anna celebrated that everything had worked far better than expected that night!"

  • I (Don't) Want to Be a Part of It, by ladyevil (part 10): "'Would you look at that?' Jane said, looking up at the spires of Trinity Church. 'This old Gothic architecture really makes the building stand out next to these glass and steel boxes.'"

  • Spider Quinn 18 A Birthday and Stormy Sonnets, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Straight after they finished their meal, Daria and Jane went to the art staffroom, where they found Ms. Dafoe."

  • Star Trek: Voyager Alone, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "USS Voyager NCC 74656 entered the Badlands. She examined the data that her sensors were collecting on the plasma storms."

  • Timmy the Bully, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Two of Quinn's three sons, Tommy and Timmy were walking the halls. They were accompanied by their best friend Kevin Junior. The three boys were talking about the upcoming weekend."

Not Everyone is Cut Out for Farm Life

Daria and Tom look very somber for Rural Life Sunday, but I don't see either of them sticking with the farm life. Once Daria figures out that you can't grow pizza, she'll be out of there before you can say "Grant Wood." Earl and Barbara, on the other hand, will still be out in the middle of nowhere selling bland chips and cellophane sandwiches.

Since today is also Radio Day, perhaps we should invite Bing and the Spatula Man out for a special broadcast! Or maybe not. I think I'd rather take them out to the farm and leave them there.

Jesse Learned Some New Four-Letter Words!

While the hair is pretty similar, I really don't think Jesse makes a good match as Howard Stern. For one thing, Howard Stern actually, you know, talks. Still, who would you rather have for World Radio Day? Bing and the Spatula Man?

Speaking of weird names, today is also Get a Different Name Day and you'd better choose one quick before all the good ones are gone. How about Esmerelda? Better follow Jake's wise advice: "You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!"

Fanfic Update!
  • Convergence on Lawndale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "'I haven’t a clue,' Peter said. 'There isn’t much data here,' the Doctor said."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 58): "Vernon Dursley sat in his chair and silently groused. As far as he was concerned, this workshop was a waste of time, the trainer was a twit, and the material he’d been required to read was complete and utter twaddle."

  • Made in America, by ladyevil (part 8): "'Take that, you son of a bitch!' Alfred shouting, firing his gun repeatedly. 'And that! And that! And here’s one for your old man!'"

  • A New Anniversary (Linn's creative thread), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "One Saturday morning, 15-year-old Rose Norstein warily made her way from her bedroom towards the last place she'd seen her father, Olek: the downstairs master bedroom he shared with her mother, Veronika."

I Guess No One Wants a Free T-shirt

Bing and/or Spatula Man is trying his best to drum up some enthusiasm for National Radio Day, but he just can't get any takers. Maybe he should try making some rude jokes and annoying sound effects. On the other hand, if you'd like some quality radio-related entertainment, take a look at Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills's fanfic series "Free Radio Lawndale." SPreeeeeeeechreeeeeech!

Bzzzzzz!

Well, someone is happy about World Mosquito Day, but it's not any of the humans that serve as their meal. I'll be celebrating with some DEET and a few good swats.

If you'd rather stay in than be dinner, then you could observe National Radio Day instead. What better way than by reading "Free Radio Lawndale" by Ken Tremberth & Erin Mills? Sure beats listening to Bing and the Spatula Man!

Fanfic Update!
  • Baby Fever (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim were in the checkout line loading groceries onto the conveyer belt. Behind them was a young brunette woman trying to soothe her crying baby. 'It's okay,' the woman said to her baby in a soft voice, 'Don't cry.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 11): "Thank goodness it's over. Daniel thought when he walked out from the classroom. Mrs. Barch's voice was unbearable, even when she didn't scream."

  • Happy Adversity, by Lady Evil (part 7): "Daria lay on her bed looking through a gaming catalogue from Game Dash. She had a good idea what to get Link for his birthday. Trouble was, most of these systems were pretty pricey."

  • The Lion Meets the Mouse, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "'You realize, I'm sure, that moving to a whole new town and starting your first day at a new school is difficult under even the best circumstances, right?' Brenda asked her daughter. 'Of course, Mother,' Stacy replied automatically."

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by RĂ©mi (parts 18 - 20): "Morgendorffer household. Daria and Quinn are eating dinner. At the end of the meal, Quinn takes two apples from a fruit basket and shows them to Daria." (Part 19) (Part 20)

Who Wants a Freeeeee T-Shirt?!

Don't look now, but Bing and/or the Spatula Man is gearing up for World Radio Day, even though literally everyone wishes he wouldn't. If you'd like some good radio, check out "Free Radio Lawndale" by Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills. It's unfinished (pitchfork jab), but a fun read.

I doubt it would help their act, but the Z-93 duo might benefit from better nicknames. If so, this is the day for it, because today is also Get a Different Name Day. In the wise words of Jake Morgendorffer, "Then you walk away. You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!"

Dibs on "Esmeralda."

Fanfic Update!
  • A Big Slice of Trouble! (Iron Chef: Drug Front Pizza), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Tiffany, dear, are you sure this video you saw was accurate?' Sandi asked. 'Yeahhhh, Sandi,' Tiffany assured her one-time leader. 'Mom and Dad say Alex Jones is the smartest man on the Internet.'"

  • Daria's Makeover, by Meester_Lee (parts 4 and 5): "Her first stop after passing through the door was the security checkpoint, which today was held by a pair of oversized fence lizards. They scanned her ID and let her pass through." (Part 5)

  • Fatal Distraction (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Sandi is watching TV in the living room when the doorbell rings. She gets up to answer. It's Lisa. 'Hi, Sandi.' Sandi said 'Hey, Lisa.' 'Can we talk?' 'Sure.'"

  • Freefall, by atiyatortilla (part 4): "Friday arrived and with it came the news of Quinn's disappearance."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 169): "5 am. The alarm went off in Tiffany Blum-Deckler's apartment near the campus of Nova Vitae."

  • When I Grow Up, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "Sister Martin had her Kindergartners gathered in a circle for Circle Time. 'Alright, boys and girls,' she said gently. 'Today, I want to teach you a new word. It's "vocation". Can you say "vocation"?'"

  • Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 11): "The school week ended and everybody was exhausted, despite the fact that Lawndale High's remaining roofing remain in place. Daria and Quinn got picked up after school while Jane remained behind for practice."

Maybe a Hurricane--or a Birthday--on the Way!

Wait! Don't turn off the TV until we've had a chance to wish Al Roker a happy birthday! Also, he just might have relevant hurricane-related news to share.

If you really must shut off the television, then at least turn on the radio for National Radio Day. Unless Bing and the Spatula Man are on, in which case feel free to fling the radio through the nearest window. For more entertaining radio personalities, see "Free Radio Lawndale" by Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills. I promise, no one will ask you if you're mental in the morning.

Fanfic Update!
  • Movers and Shakers (Daria and the Gang Thread II), by Roentgen (parts 1 and 2): "DARIA: "Hello, I'm Daria Morgendorffer and welcome to Movers and Shakers. This presenation allows us, through the use of sophisticated computer science and three-dimensional modeling, to recreate not merely the images, but the voices, the thoughts and the beliefs of some of the greatest and most influential people in history." (Part 2)

  • On The Road, by elainefr (part 44): "'So......' 'So......' They both took a seat across from each other. 'We were supposed to talk......before,' Brad ventured watching her carefully. 'Yeah, we were- we should......talk.'"

A Holiday For All of the DJs Out There, Lame or Otherwise!

Bing--or is it Spatula Man?--is inviting everyone to celebrate World Radio Day today on Zeeeeeeeee 93! If you call in right now, you could win a free T-shirt! Or you could just save your sanity and change the station.

For all of you fans of non-annoying radio out there, here's Free Radio Lawndale by Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills. Enjoy!

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 4): "She'd long since grown accustomed to the way she would sometimes hear fragments of sound that spoke of smiles and laughter and sadness. • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (parts 3 and 4): "In the bridge of Sealab, Daria Morgendorffer slept peacefully at her post while Jodene Sparks played Mahjong on one of his communication consoles. Sparks glanced over at Daria and frowned. 'Hey... slacking off is my job,' he said to himself." (Part 4)

  • The Many Doctors, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 34): "The TARDIS materialized in a space that resembled a museum. The Doctor, Rose and Felicia emerged. 'Where is this?' Felicia asked. 'Earth. Utah, North America. About half a mile underground,' the Doctor answered."

"Are you ready to par-tay crazy?"

Spatula Man (or is that Bing? Does anyone care?) wants everyone to know that today is National Radio Day, and also wants to know if anyone would like a free T-shirt. No? Then how about hours of nonstop radio DJ chatter that will drive you completely insane?

Radio fans might enjoy "Radio Free Lawndale," a fanfic written by Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills. SPreeeeeeeechreeeeeech!

Fanfic Update!
  • Abattoir Blues (2)- The Killing Moon, by LongSnakeMoan (part 3): "'Well, well, this is a nice surprise. How've ya been doin', Jane?' Oh shit, it's Al. Ever since Anthony spilled the beans that Al's boss wants me for a big job, I've been walking on egg shells waiting for this call."

  • Daria, Jane, and a new sick sad world, by SpookyZalost (part 4): "Jane was worried, it had been over a month since she and Daria had encountered the entity, and it was apparent that she had been tricked and she was angry that so far she hadn't found it yet."

  • Doctor Who: A New Beginning: A Crashing Time, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Clara Oswald didn't know what to think. The Doctor had regenerated, and then the TARDIS was crashing into something (into what, the Doctor hadn't answered) and then had asked her if she knew how to fly it."

  • Happy Ever After, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "If anyone had told the teenage Daria that not only would she attend her ten year High School reunion party, but she would actually be looking forward to it, she would not have believed it for a moment and yet here she was."

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (parts 19 - 21): "Kevin smiled broadly and put one hand up in the air. 'Congrats, man; you made it! The Lawndale Lions! We are going to own the championship this year!'" (Part 20) (Part 21)

  • Redux, by Princess_Pasta (parts 7 and 8): "Tonight, she was nervous and it was all because of Daria. Quinn was used to competing with other girls. She'd been doing it since she was young. But competing with Daria wasn't the same." (Part 8)

  • Riding On The Wind (Iron Chef: Bootless Daria), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'Lawndale High takes home the State Championships for the third year in a row!' The applause that erupted from the bleachers was almost enough to brighten Quinn's mood. Almost."

"Don't cry for me, DeMartino..."

Argentine First Lady Eva Peron was born 91 years ago today. She was wildly popular in her native Argentina, and her fame spread into worldwide popular culture. In time her life story became a rock opera and a stage musical, then a 1996 movie, Evita, starring Madonna as Ms. Peron. Then one of the images from Madonna's version of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" (hands upraised at the microphone) became a Daria alter ego starring Ms. Li as Madonna as Eva Peron. And that's how the image at left came to be. Perhaps Ms. Li daydreams that she could be the next Evita. [sigh]

Today is also Radio Day in Russia, celebrating the achievements of Alexander Popov in the discovery of radio in 1895. There is an intense argument over who actually discovered radio (and an even more vicious argument over who discovered television). You can pick whichever inventor you wish.

PPMB
  • The episode "Gifted" as seen through Jane's eyes, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): Jane places a new canvas on her easel. What if Daria's parents take her up there this weekend and just sign her up. Mrs. Morgendorffer is always looking for a way to get Daria to do something to improve her college applications. What better than going to a school like Grove Hills. What if doesn't give Daria a choice? I can't lose my amiga. I don't want to be alone again. Jane sighs as she stares at the blank page.
  • Finn Morgendorffer 45: Quarter Past Midnight, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4): “I don’t wanna talk about Finn. I don’t...wanna remember it right now.” Jane pressed her knees into her chest as she sat on the bed. Her eyes started to tear up, and Helen knew, from tidbits of conversation between Daria and Finn, that this was something Jane did not do often.
  • The Game Called Life, by Trscroggs (collected/reposted): "Damn it, I thought killing those two knuckleheads would be a good thing!" Daria yelled in frustration.
  • Hello Class, by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): “Class you may have notice I’m not your usual teacher.” Because Ms Li is an evil money-hording witch who should be hanged.
  • NEW! Tracksuits, by Malakite (Part 6): Sandi glanced up at the various hairstyle displays before replying. "Well, I'm a little torn between just a trim and that style there" as she focused in on one particular photo of a woman with an almost Seventies style cut, beneath which a faded "Menzies Photography" could be read. The woman smiled as she dropped her nail file onto the counter. "Of course. Well, if you'd just come this way." She lead Sandi by the hand toward a station near the back of the salon. After she was seated, and the apron secured around her neck, Sandi realized her error.
