Walk Like an Esteem Teacher!

Mr. O'Neill looks far more impressive than usual for the anniversary of the unsealing of King Tutankhamun's tomb on this day in 1923, but I suppose that's not saying much. I mean, it would be difficult for the man to look less impressive than usual, wouldn't it?

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Arts 'N Crass" on this day in 1998, as well as the Daria Day marathon that aired just before it. Check out the transcript to have all of your burning questions answered, such as what the Morgendorffers are always eating. Really hard-hitting stuff.

Fanfic Update!
  • Choice of the Cheerleader 02 - A Fair of Change, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Quinn was annoyed. Brittany’s audition, while rather good, wasn’t an excuse for Mr. O’Neill to not consider anyone else. She wondered what to do about it. Then it hit her. Sabotage!"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 57): "Wallerstein Park was the largest and most beautiful green area in all of Layndale."

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks: An Aquatic Second Contact, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Mariner entered the room to see Tendi and T’Lyn in the midst of a discussion."

  • Stranger Without Time, by radiofox (part 8): "That evening, Quinn looked out her window while she contemplated the day's events. The waxing gibious moon beamed through the starry skies and crisp fall air that delicately waved back and forth across town."

Daria, Do NOT Try For Any Beads!

Daria, Tad, and Tom don't seem particularly interested in the parade, but that's just because it's nothing compared to the usual celebrations you'd see today for Mardi Gras. Of course, these aren't usual times, so maybe a scaled-down version is better anyway.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Arts 'N Crass," which aired on this day in 1998. It was the first episode of the second season, and followed the Daria Day marathon, which gave us all kinds of fun behind-the-scenes insights. For example, the Morgendorffers don't eat lasagna; they eat concentrated protein and starch nutrition squares. And now you know!

And the Winner Is...Fashion!

Stacy is thrilled to be named the winner of the Daytona 500, which is taking place later today. You can talk about dirt and grease and broken nails, but that's about the happiest I have ever seen Stacy so let's not ruin it for her.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Arts 'N Crass," which aired on this day in 1998. It was preceded by the Daria Day Marathon, and if you like fourth-wall breaking and metahumor then this will totally be totally your jam.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 28): "One class had Daria worried: Potions. Potions had acquired the reputation as being one of the toughest classes at Hogwarts: the professor wasn’t just strict, but also extremely sarcastic and demanding and was reputed to favor Slytherin, the House he headed."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 35): "Tom and Darren were back to looking at each other through the windshields of their respective rovers. Tom reflected on how being a pioneer on the infinite frontier of space seemed to involve a tremendous amount of waiting and boredom."

  • Everything to Fear But Camp Itself, by Lady Evil (part 7): "'Well, here we are, Camp Grizzly.' said Bruno. 'How ya feeling, Kina?'"

  • A family Secret, by RĂ©mi (COMPLETE!): "« Can I come in ? » Quinn was surprised both by Daria’s hesitant demeanour and her embarassed question."

  • On the curb (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by sarcasticsponge (COMPLETE!): "One early morning in Lawndale saw one Tom Sloan driving slowly around town contemplating about his life several months after Daria broke up with him."

  • T.A.Ts from a Magazine (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "'Ohhh,' Brittany Taylor cooed appreciatively as she studied the document enshrined on the wall. 'Great Prairie State University! I’m going there you know! Or maybe you don’t? But Ms. Manson, this says you, philosophiae doctoris uh, do philosophy. I thought you were a psychologist.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "It was a tuesday morning in Lawndale. In the Morgendorffer household, like countless homes across the US, this meant that its occupants prepared for yet another working day."

Brunch Like an Egyptian

Jake's doing some amateur archaeology as he tries to emulate Howard Carter, who entered King Tutankhamun's tomb on this day in 1923. I think he's finding less treasure and more sugar, but for Jake I suppose it's still a good deal.

Also on this day in 1998, the episode "Arts 'N Crass" first aired. I think my favorite moment is Helen's rare moment of awesomeness at the end. What's yours?

We're still waiting for more votes for for the Daria Fanworks Awards. Please vote if you haven't already!

Lincoln and Washington, Bros for Life

It's President's Day, and both presidents are surprisingly excited about it considering the two of them have to share one holiday. Still, as long as nobody wears sandals I guess everything will be fine.

Also, "Arts 'N Crass" first aired on this day in 1998. Highlights of the episode include learning about the extra quart of grease in the pizza recipe, witnessing Helen's moment of triumph, and seeing Brittany's unlikely art contest win. (Seriously, how awful must the other entries have been?!)

Fanfic Update!
  • ASPS, by PrecambrianStudios (part 81): "Wearing a long, emerald-green trenchcoat and a deerstalker cap that barely hid her sunglasses, Karis Chapman tailed Ben Nielsen, making to keep at least fifty feet behind him. Her searching was almost over; she knew he had the answer."

  • Mack of All Trades, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "Keeping his eyes closed, Mack thought, If he keeps saying his lines in that monotone, I won't need any angels. His dull acting will put me to sleep just fine. And opening night is in three days! I almost feel sorry for the audience."

  • Rising with the Machines... Cynically, by Kuriamo22 (part 3): "The next day Jane noticed Daria was acting a bit quieter than usual as they walked to school on that rather chilly morning. Jane glanced at her friend and noted she looked deep in thought as she stared blankly forward."

  • Unbearable (Daria and the Gang), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "The doorbell rang at the Morgendorffer residence. 'That's for me!' Quinn cried from upstairs. But before she could bound downstairs and get to the door, Jake was already ahead of her. He always liked his chats with Quinn's dates, where he could rap, homie to homie."

  • The Unique, by EntrancedCat (part 2): "'Yondah lies da castle of my foddah. That's got to be the most boring castle ever,' she decided."

But Was He Buried Without His Diver?

Ninety-one years ago today, Howard Carter opened King Tutankhamun's tomb. I don't know if O'Neill there is supposed to be King Tut or not, but if he is, I guarantee Carter found a whole bunch of echinacea and self-help books in there.

Speaking of Mr. O'Neill, it was also on this day in 1998 that the episode "Arts 'N Crass" aired on MTV, and in it we got to see what might be O'Neill's most positive portrayal on the show as he took Daria and Jane's side on having the poster entered against their objections and tried to stand up to Ms. Li. Sure, he failed miserably, but I give him credit for at least trying.

Tut, Tut, You Lazy Overachiever!

On this day in 1923, King Tut's tomb was opened and explored. Jodie is dressed--and drawn--for the occasion, and I think that's as motionless as anyone is ever likely to see her.

Also on this day, the episode "Arts N' Crass" aired for the first time in 1998. There weren't really any tombs in it, although I could see Brittany coming up with a "Don't Get Buried in Tombs" poster theme for the art contest. If only she could find her lipstick.

Sabotage! Vandalism! Hooliganism! Werewolves!

Eleven years ago today was the first showing of "Arts 'N Crass," the climax of which appears at left, but before that was shown the Daria Day Marathon 1998, reviewing all first-season episodes of the Daria show. And I missed all of it. So it goes.

Roentgen wants to start a message-board role-playing game he calls, Daria: The Werewolfening. Click the link for details and signing up. Upchuck helps out at right.

  • The Prodigal Daughter, by a440 (Part 6): "Whatever you two do, be careful—Todd and his gang have been plum loco on the drug rampage and those two dum dums; Beavis and his Butt-Head were last seen stealing a riding mower."
PPMB
  • Crossing Stars, by Silver (Part 1): "Some rich idiot is paying thirty million ISK for a fast ship to transport him or her to a system that's been under intermittent siege for the last four League-standard months. Which means—” "It's a deathtrap.” This from Stacy, the navigator. "It's a deathtrap,” Daria agreed.
  • Daria Is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (SEASON ONE COMPLETE!): "My job was to try to bring you back to Earth," Joe Biden told Raven. He looked at Starfire. "But I think that she’s more qualified for that. I’ll see you around."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 33: Independence, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): It wasn’t until later that night that Finn reviewed the necessary information for tutoring tomorrow. The sun would rise again, and Sierra would be back over for more work. Finn couldn’t hate her, what was the point? Sierra had not told Finn those things about himself: He did himself. It was harder to concentrate, but, just maybe, if Finn could concentrate on this tutoring work she assigned, and he did well at it, she’d be impressed. He could get the girl without his looks. Maybe instill a state of back to normality in this crazy life of his. Finn’s bad mood did not dissipate, but it lightened.
  • First Day of School, or What Might Have Been, by Roentgen (Part 1): The Morgendorffer car pulled up to the school. Jake watched Quinn climb out of the car. He turned to his other daughter, Daria. "Don't get upset if it takes the other kids a little while to warm up to you." Daria watched as a young lady looked Quinn over from head to toe. "Hi! You're cool. What's your name?" "Quinn Morgendorffer," Quinn answered. Another young woman said, "Huge." Whatever 'huge' meant, it was certainly a complement.
  • General Semantics, Private Angst, by Gwrtheyrn (Part 12): "Hey, Daria! Sorry we can't talk directly; those damn laws of physics, y'know. My friend, Roboplane Group Nexus 6, is going to ask you to do something you might find surprising, and I just wanted to let you know that it and I really did work out those instructions together. I can't lie to you, kiddo, we're up against it, with this space invasion business; but ol' Jakey's got a lot of plates in the air trying to make it come out right for us. You've got a key part in all this, so please, trust us, and do as Group Nexus 6 asks."
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Special: No One Is to Blame, by Brother Grimace (preview): Tom realized what was going on. It was a direct challenge from Farrington. The cadet's god-like powers would be suppressed for thirty minutes, and he would be as vulnerable as any man. Sloane would be expected to do the same, and he would be without his own superhuman resources.
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Special: Tokusatsu Team Up! by LSauchelli (continued): “Be careful!” cried the green-haired ranger as he jumped to intercept a rocky fist that had been directed straight at Daria’s face. “These Mindless Ones don’t look like much, but they pack punch that could easily shatter your skull!”
  • A Ticket to Ride, by Doggieboy (Part 6): The brunette opened her eyes, looked down at her chest and said, “Uh-oh.”
