The Birth of Jake

Jake's doing a slightly disturbing recreation of The Birth of Venus in honor of the birth of Sandro Botticelli on this day in 1445. I'm no expert on art, but I think the boxer shorts kind of ruin the effect. On the other hand, Daria and Quinn would much prefer he keep them on.

Less known to fandom, aside from those brave and/or sadistic fans who played the game, is that Jane also made an appearance as Venus in Daria's Inferno. Fully clothed, in case you're curious.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Appointment, by elainefr (part 6): "'Hello?' 'Hey Daria......it's Trent.' Momentary silence; she'd seen the Lane name come up and had assumed that it was Jane since she had went home for the weekend- again."

  • Calls the Tune (Daria and the Gang Thread II), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'Are you done?' Jane asked. 'Coming,' Daria said. She dodged from behind the tombstone and made her presence known."

  • Consequences, by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "Brittany tried to focus on the worn romance novel in her hands, but just found herself reading the same sentence over and over again. With a sigh, she got up off her bed and replaced the book on the shelf."

  • From Both Sides, by mailorderannie (part 1): "The knock on the apartment door caused Daria to grumble as she rolled out of bed. 'Tuesdays are for sleeping in until noon!' she muttered as she threw on a robe."

  • The Gonzo Papers, by Two-Eyed Charlie (parts 1a and 1b): "'Thanks for coming in, Ms. Morgendorffer.' 'Thanks for giving me the hope of a constant paycheck and more than half a meal a day.'" (Part 1b)

  • The Great War of the Dale, by Wassersauefer (part 1): "A lot of things could be said about Jojaje. First of all, Jojaje was of course not the real name for this individual... um, creature. Yes, creature was perhaps the best way of describing him. Them. It was confusing sometimes."

  • Someone had to do it, by RĂ©mi (parts 6 and 7): "This was an uneventful night. Daria and Jane were sharing a pizza at Pizza King : it had quickly became an habit for both of them. - So, what about those rumors ? asked Jane between two bites." (Part 7)

  • Telling Tales Out of School, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "The next stop was a girl David had tutored unsuccessfully the previous summer: Stacy Rowe. He remembered her as willing to learn but unable to get past her debilitating panic attacks over...well, everything. He rang the doorbell and waited."

  • top baller, by rvgonzal (part 3): "Casa lane/ Janes massive loft suite. Janes artwork is displayed throughout the walls of suite along with many of her sculptures decorating the rooms. The rooms are beautifully painted with warm brown colors and plush carpeting."

We Should Probably Just Be Glad He's Wearing Boxers

Today is generally considered to be the birthdate of Sandro Botticelli, born in 1445 and best known for his painting "The Birth of Venus." Jake (right) is not exactly Venus, but we'll take it.

Happy 566th birthday, Botticelli!

Get Goin'!

It's March 1st, and Mr. DeMartino is our mascot today because he's "marching first"! Get it? Whatever.

A curious Daria-related birthday anniversary: Botticelli, famed artist from a Very Long Time Ago (the Renaissance). Botticelli, now 565, painted The Birth of Venus, an iconic work that somehow became a meme in Daria. The latter link explains all, with relevant imagery.

PPMB
  • Daria: Hunter 6—Infectious, by Jim North (continued): "Is it a holiday or something?" Daria shook her head. "Columbus Day was earlier this week, but nothing today," she said. "Not unless they declared a new one without telling anyone. Something's wrong." "Well, I'd assume that's why our agent buddies called us about an emergency," Jane said with a shrug.
  • Esteemsters: 4chan Edition, by TAG (in progress): "Lawndalechan is an epic school full of win! We roll over 9000 triples! That is why you will triforce to 404 the rickrolls."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 34: A Few Cans of Soda, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): Finn had little time for Kevin, he had to put a stop to Ms. Li. There was no way in hell Finn was going to let that caffeine-addled superbitch run free.
  • General Semantics, Private Angst, by Gwrtheyrn (Part 15): A supernally brilliant blue star, with a smaller attendant chip of whiteness, gleamed ahead. They were traveling at maximum blast, a profligate waste of resources, so tomorrow, that blue star would begin to show a disk to the naked eye. By the end of the day, she would be ensconced back in the Presidential palace, to enjoy the company of President Lane, 'X,' and Jim Vitale.
  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 9): Quinn closed The Odyssey in despair. It was all Greek to her.
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: The Vetting Process, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!) “She looks like she’s a Latina—so I’d say that she’s the new soon-to-be ex-Mrs. Armalin.”

The Birth of... Jane? Jake? Where's Venus?

Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus over 500 years ago, but the painting is still popular today. Witness: The Birth of Venus with Jake Morgendorffer (left), and The Birth of Venus with Jane Lane (right).

Today is Botticelli's 564th birthday. Happy Florentine Art Day!

The Jake image, by the way, is from the MTV Daria website. The Jane one came from Daria's Inferno, the computer game.

Brandon League wants to see the Impossible 'Ship, and has created a PPMB thread to discover one. Will he ever find fulfillment?

On the Backgrounders site, Burnout Girl has been updated. I forgot she was a smoker. Also, Pigtails has been completed with UU's marvelous screen captures. (Mine suck.)

Time for fanfic.

FF.net
  • Daylight: Recruitment Day, by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "That was some ride, Big Jake." "My pleasure, little lady."
  • Daylight: A Visit to Camp Grizzly, by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "This looks like a summer camp." “It was. Most of us were here for a five-year reunion when everything happened."
PPMB
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): As he reached for the switch that would detonate the explosives wrapped around his midsection, Daria screamed: "Get him, Toki!"
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: Babysitting Duty, by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): “One of the school’s drug-sniffing dogs bit Kevin’s crotch after lunch,” Daria said. “I’ve never heard him squeal that high before. Even Brittany doesn’t squeak at that pitch.”
  • Turnabout Confusion Part II: All The King's Horses, by Dennis (continued): "You lied about me!" Jane's hands hooked into claws and she made as if to rake them across his face. "You said we slept together!"
  • Were and Why, by Brandon League (Part 2): It had seemed so ridiculous at the time. Three days earlier, a very human Daria Morgendorffer lay in her bed casually flipping through a battered and dog-eared copy of The Great Gatsby. Frowning, she reached over and picked up a number two pencil off the nightstand.
