Ultra Cola...the Refreshing Way to Explore the World!

Happy Columbus Day! Today we observe the anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovering America. The anniversary is technically on October 12th and not the 10th, but then again Columbus technically didn't discover America, either. So it all works out.

Columbus Day was also celebrated by Beavis, Butt-head, and Daria in Beavis and Butt-head issue 22, in which the intrepid duo succeed in discovering new ways to piss Daria off. Thanks to Charles RB for the head's up about the link to the comic book summary!

Today is also both Thanksgiving in Canada and World Mental Health Day, and it's fitting that the two go hand-in-hand. After all, the Holiday Island version of Thanksgiving has "a lot of screwed-up family problems and always gets depressed by the end of the day." Why should Canada be any different?

Think Free!

Today is Columbus Day, which was once a big deal but is not so much anymore. The Vikings got here first, anyway.

Closer to Daria's interests, it is also Freethought Day, which for some reason strikes me as a very Daria-ish holiday. It was good enough for the founding fathers.

Moar l8r. Okay, l8r now.

NEW! Roentgen has discovered that Pepsi discovered that there are only 24 types of women! Yes! Isn't science great? How would you rate the women of Daria in the Pepsi-approved manner?

Pinhead is producing one of the most entertaining pictorial threads in ages. For your daily dose of artistic Daria humor, marvelously rendered, go to Small Joke. It's the best!

Speaking of art, Richard Lobinske has once again updated the 2009 Daria Visual Fanworks Listing. Thank you! Some great stuff is out this year, you gotta love it.

NEW! Kara Wild (the Great) has discovered that Daria is doing very well in a Television Without Pity Cartoon Survival Game! Excellent. Care to sign up and join in?

NEW! A reminder here that the Television Without Pity website has what is probably the second- or third-most active Daria message forum online ("Daria: You're Standing on My Neck"). I've added it to the Recommended Links at left. Go forth and read! (See the most recent messages here.)

Almost up to 120,000 hits! Yahoo!

  • Finn Morgendorffer 7: History on Skates, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): Man, that was quite a night! Finn thought to himself. Joey’s mother was out of town, so he had invited all the guys over to watch the game. Of course, a boy’s night with no parents around meant football, wings, and all the whiskey Finn could drink. (FF.net)
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): In a place that's not a place, but a macrodimension of irrationality with an atmosphere. And where the geometry is all wrong, too: When looked at one way, all a human eye can behold is a sea of tormented, writhing pseudopods rippling in a dank, ultraviolet chemical breeze....
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): Tom's bedroom door opened, and he looked up from his novel with annoyed expression. His witty, caustic comment died on his lips as his jaw sagged open and his eyes widened.

Undone in October

Diane Long's classic tale "Undone" takes place in October about this time in the early to mid-2000s. Check it out. Angst sure didn't start with me.

Today is Thanksgiving Day in Canada (thank you) and Columbus Day (observed) in the U.S., when we celebrate whatziname in that boat. Also, the Whirlpool Galaxy was discovered 235 years ago. I love that galaxy.

More after I return from work. Have a good one until then.

Think Free!

I'm glad I created this blog, as I would never have known otherwise that today is Freethought Day. This might even count as an official Daria holiday, it is so like her. You know this kid is going to be a pain at Holiday Island High, though. Think free!

Today is also the day when, 516 years ago, Christopher Columbus discovered the capital of Ohio. And the U.N. says today is the 9th anniversary of the birth of the six billionth human (in current population, not since the dawn of time). Thus today is The Day of Six Billion. Whatever you do in celebrating that, don't add more people to the total, please (unless you planned it that way).

Want to blow up the sun and turn the results into a Daria fanfic? Try DAYLIGHT, on Dariaverse.com. The PPMB discussion thread is here, and the short-story thread is here.

Legendeld is trying to choose a new story. Oops, here's another entry on his blog. You should read this stuff, it's funny.

The latest DariaWiki entry: Let Vengeance Ring. Oops, several new ones since then. See Dariaverse.com.

The Daria Fan Club has over 1,000 members!

And now, the (long overdue) fanfic update.

Lawndale Online

PPMB
  • Blood, Sweat, and Cheers, by Kristen Bealer (parts 1 and 2): "The F Word" goes horribly awry and produces a story that is awesome to the win power. Hang on for this one!
  • Brave New World, by Doggieboy (Parts 1 and 2): “Please tell me they don’t use outhouses here,” Daria said. *
  • Daylight: Ashes and Kisses, by legendeld (Parts 1, 2, and 3): "If you so much as whisper this brattle again, I’ll kill you.”
  • Daylight/LLH: Tartarus, by Roentgen (Part 1): It's Zero Hour, and Lawndale is about to go boom.
  • Daylight/Ringbearers: Before the Dawn Comes, by Brother Grimace: The sensation that always heralded a very bad prescient dream – Archangel was certain that was what he was having now – trickled at the small of his neck and down his spine. This is not going to be good, in any way, shape or form.
  • Dealing with the Real World, by magnuskrauss (part 7): God, I don't know what I'd do without her, she thought. If something happened to Jane... I might lose my mind.
  • End of the Line, by legendeld (Parts 1 to 5): “Someone has altered the time lines on this Earth, and we have to find out what they’re doing now." [I think this title has been used before in another Daria fanfic, but no problem. Remember this when creating a title for the DariaWiki page.—TAG]
  • I Knew It! by legendeld (Parts 1 and 2): “It’s been so long, lover,” the unfamiliar woman said before kissing Daria passionately. [Love the beginning!]
  • Mobius Strip, by legendeld (Parts 6 and 7): “We’re hiding out from some unknown threat and here you are oiled up and looking perfect.” [Part 7: Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!]
  • Origins of the Ringbearers: Let Vengeance Ring, by Richard Lobinske (Parts 4, 5, and 6): "Jane, what I'm doing is going to be really dangerous." "These Ringwraiths can come back any time, right?" [Man, does this story have action!]
  • The Other Side of Time: Unfinished Business, by The Sidhe (Part 3): Richard gave a slight frown. “Who is it, Sergeant-Major?” he asked. “It’s a courier from Richmond,” Horton said. “A Major Robert E. Lee, Junior.”
  • The Quinn Show, by Disco316 (Part 4): A real eye-opener. A Daria/Truman Show crossover, done right and well told.
  • The Sleeper Awakens, by durgarox (continued): He crawls out of the hungry ground, tearing out fistfuls of grass and peat before he is able to rise and stumble away from the open grave. [Daria/The Crow: Blooood on the moooon!]
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): "We seem to be facing legions of organized psychopaths, power crazed buffoons, and immensely powerful evil beings with conflicting agendas." "That, and nobody makes decent pizza anymore."
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: Security Blanket, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Trent’s three friends had always believed that Jane had some sort of witch-like powers, and as a result never did anything to really piss her off.
  • Turnabout Confusion Part II: All The King's Horses, by Dennis (continued): "Well," DeMartino growled, taking up the papers, "I've graded your tests. And to no one's surprise, your performances were dismal."
  • Whose Whine Is It Anyway? by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): A very funny crossover between Daria and Whose Line Is It Anyway? "Ah, but the lifespan of a supermodel is not one where one can afford dawdle. When at last, her time is done, it's off she goes to VH-1."
