Here's Looking at You, Kiddo

Trent and Daria are re-creating the iconic final scene from the movie Casablanca, which premiered on this day in 1942. I like this alter ego, if only because as an anti-shipper I know that it means Daria's about to go far, far away from Trent. Yay!

Of course, let's not forget that in the United States, today is also Thanksgiving! You can either eat until you drop or try to cope with your messed-up family problems; your choice. Whatever you do, save room for dessert because today is also National Cake Day. I know that pie is traditional on Thanksgiving, but come on: who's going to turn down cake?

Fanfic Update!
  • Brittany - Party Time, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Donna saw Andrea come into the kitchen. 'You’re here. Good,' she said."

  • Life Goes On: A Christmas Special, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Daria: 'I can't believe I'm freezing my ass off in front of a suburban elementary school.' Jane: 'Daria, it's a light December snowfall, not the harsh January blizzard we endured on that ill fated mountain excursion back in high school.'"

  • Therefore I Am, by atiyatortilla (COMPLETE!): "Thanksgiving wasn’t a holiday that Jane cared about. She loved gorging herself with food as much as the next person but, after having to endure an entire day with her family, turkey was no reward."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "As Jesse slowly approached Ruttheimer manor, he reminded himself why he was doing this. It was for Jane and Daria, who didn’t deserve to be enslaved by a madman."

Here's Looking at You, Kiddo

Trent and Daria are recreating a famous scene from Casablanca because today is the anniversary of actress Ingrid Bergman's birth in 1915. The only Casablanca reference I can think of from the show is when Brittany confused the movie title for the word "casanova." Anyone else know of one I'm forgetting?

Also in this day sixteen years ago, Admonisher published the essay A Rant About "Evil" Tom. In spite of the amount of time that's passed, the points are still relevant to fandom and to fanfic writing.

Fanfic Update!
  • Camped Out, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "Back at the camp, Trent was starting to wonder when they were going to have sack races or toast marshmallows. So far everyone was just standing around and talking, and no one was doing the summer camp stuff he'd been expecting."

  • Clarity, by Zetor (part 8): "I blink and yawn as I check the clock on the bedside table. It reads eleven thirty. I start to panic about being late for school, then I remember I don't go to school any more."

  • Close (Iron Chef: Daria and Quinn Roommates), by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "Daria lay back on her bed reading as she took advantage of the opportunity to listen to her music from her stereo rather than on her headphones. She and Quinn had made an agreement to always use headphones when they were both in the room after their competing stereos had given their father a panic attack."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 28): "'Jane? Jane!' 'Huh? Oh, sorry, that guy keeps looking at me,' Jane defended as the Spiral played their closing number for the first set – Mr Normal."

  • Me And My Monkey, by Dennis (part 3): "I spent a sleepless night on the couch with bad TV droning in the background. Dave was out, so all I had for company was my whirling thoughts and Monkey, who enjoyed the attention."

  • Standstill, by Princess_Pasta (part 6): "'This is torture!' Quinn lamented as she dramatically threw herself across her bed, sending several stuffed animals flying to the floor. The last thing she wanted was to be cooped up in her room, locked away from the outside world, with only her textbooks for company."

  • Unnamed story (IC Runaway Daria), by Waylander (part 6): "Daria sat with the spiral notebook braced against her knees. Slowly, she read through her adaptation of Treasure Island. She wasn't satisfied with the scene of Jim Hawkins hijacking of Hispaniola."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Quinn Roommates), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Jake Morgendorffer finished turning in the last screw and got down from the step ladder onto the deep carpet in his daughters' bedroom. He closed and opened the opaque grey room divider a couple times admiring his handiwork as it slid smoothly and nearly soundlessly along the ceiling track."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Quinn Roommates), by nightbeast37 (COMPLETE!): "Daria trudged inside the bedroom she shared with Quinn (against her will). She had just finished yet another day at hell on Earth (aka school) and needed some time to herself before her little redhead sister burst her bubble."

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Kuriamo22 (COMPLETE!): "Admiral Kirk stood defiantly in front of the rogue Klingon commander Kruge whom held him at gunpoint on the dying world of Genesis. Kruge had just ordered his men to be beamed to the Bird of Prey in orbit save for Spock."

Here's Looking at You, Kiddo

Daria and Trent shippers (boo!) can rejoice at this alter ego, portraying the duo as Rick and Ilsa from the movie Casablanca. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the film premiered on this day in 1942.

Today is also Cyber Monday, which the Fashion Club will most likely be participating in--if they can get over their fear of appearing to be (ugh!) computer geeks.

Here's Looking at You, Misery Chick!

Daria and Trent's alter ego today is an homage to the film Casablanca, which premiered on this day in 1942. The film also got a brief reference in "Quinn the Brain," when Brittany accuses Kevin of being a "high school Casablanca!" I'm pretty sure she meant "casanova," but a ref is still a ref...as time goes by.

Also, happy birthday to the late Charles M. Schulz, who was born on this day in 1922. Schulz was the cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Peanuts, which inspired this little exchange from "Jake of Hearts":

Daria: Good grief.

Jane: It's lame deejays, Charlie Brown!

Here's Lookin' at You, Kiddo

It's Thanksgiving, and there's more news to come.

Casablanca was released on this day 67 years ago. Bogart and Bergman (Trent and Daria, at left) reenact the airport scene at the end. Hankies all around for the tearfully inclined.

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schultz was born this day 87 years ago. Can you believe there have been Daria/Peanuts crossovers? Indeed, there are. (And I don't mean this one.) However, for some reason I cannot find them. Dang. Oh! Here's one, and here's the other! Excellent!

This exact day in the year 2001 (in another Dariaverse) was described in this fanfic. Another day in Paradise, how true....

Want to go to a Dariacon in Geneva, Switzerland? Want a chance to create havoc with the Large Hadron Collider while discussing Daria's bra size? Click the link! But read some fanfiction before you go.

PPMB
  • Balletdictorian, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): I might be an ugly witch, Jodie thought with satisfaction, but at least I can have pretty shoes.
  • The Bellgirl, by Liz Ruiz (COMPLETE!): "I spent the summer tutoring some of the guys at my school. Not that it didn’t totally backfire. I mean, who knew that after reading The Iliad they would come the next day dressed in a three-part donkey costume? They completely missed the freaking point!"
  • Bringing the Angst, by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Everything I touch turns to angst," Daria Morgendorffer said quietly to herself as she walked down the halls of Lawndale High School. "Everything becomes ash. Everything." (FF.net)
  • Finn Morgendorffer 16: Ambrosia Vinaigrette, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): “Eric, I really have to get going, it’s time for supper. What are we having? Well, lasagna of course. That ricotta is just so... what was that? Oh, Eric, I didn’t know about that. Well, there are plenty of other things besides cheese to eat. Damn those doctors, right? Bye!” (FF.net)
  • Get Sloan, by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETE!): "Now, Tom, I called you in here for a very important assignment. From this point on, everything I say is Top Secret, Class A security clearance." "Class A?" "That’s right." "Then shouldn’t we use the Cone of Silence?"
  • In Silence Sarcastic, by Trscroggs (continued): “You flashed Beavis and Butt-head!”
  • In the Fine Morning, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): The phone rang. Jane looked at the stereo clock. 9:54 am. The phone continued to ring. Six times. Eight times. Somewhere from the basement, the sound of a duck quack klaxoned through the Lane house. Great, thought Jane, Trent ain't home. The person next to Jane stirred and groaned. "Who's calling... goddamn it..." [Based on this comic]
  • Iron Chef: Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (continued): Oh my, I hope that friend Raven comes back soon. Without her the Tower is somewhat... "Starfire, what is a nocturnal emission?!" ...chaotic.
  • John Lane 44: Fizzy Logic, by Richard Lobinske (Part 1): As Ms. Ruiz passed out papers to her senior English class, she said, "Try to read chapters one to five of Frankenstein in the handout. You can thank the not-so-generous voters for the lack of real copies."
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes 13:7—Express Yourself, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): “I had never envisioned any sort of code names for Legionnaires,” Daria Morgendorffer said, leaning forward in her chair as she spoke to the other Legionnaires in the conference room. “I don't think there’s much of a point. Why would anyone call me Mnemosyne when you can just say, ‘Hey, Daria?’ Why Polaris when you can call her Jane?”
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes 13:8—Shadows of the Night, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Mack didn’t understand why Sandi suddenly turned to look at him with a scowl, and the other girls began to titter. “What did I say?” he asked, actually taking a step back from Sandi. “What?”
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: Bull Session, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): “Okay, my turn,” Mack Mackenzie said, taking a Cluster Burger and an order of fries out of the large bag before passing it on. “You’re going to a family reunion, and they all think that you’re married, so you need to show up with someone who they think is your wife. Who’s the girl you take along with you?”
  • Mind Over Plasma, by Jim North (Part 1): The song played out to an uninspired finish, but Jane had to admit that the overall piece showed a little bit of promise. "It was okay," she said, "but I think it coulda used the sound of two cars in a mid-air collision falling five hundred meters to the ground." Trent's eyebrow arched ever so slightly. "You're right," he said. "I shouldn't have taken that part out."
  • Reflections, by Midnightstorm (COMPLETE!): I never knew I'd live to see seventeen. Some days you wake up in the morning feeling like crap and just want to end it right there. You probably never felt the way I did. Those days, I'd go to the bathroom, look in the mirror and say to myself, "What? You're still here!"
  • The True Story of How Stacy Rowe Destroyed the Fashion Club, by Ticknart (COMPLETE!): "Stacy," her mother called from downstairs, "come to the dining room, your father and I need to talk to you about something."
  • Unnamed story (Three-peat! New Ideas Thread Wins Again!), by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): Still confused by her surroundings, Daria followed the written directions to "The Green Dome". Inside, she found a middle-aged man with gray hair wearing a black blazer with white piping. "Where am I?" she demanded. He had a friendly smile as he said, "The Village." [Now with a sequel by Ranger Thorne!]

Everyone Goes to Trent's

The famous movie "Casablanca" had its premier showing 66 years ago today. Trent and Daria reenact the parts of Bogart and Bergman in the picture. Here's lookin' at you, kids. (Careful, Daria—you don't know where that thumb has been.)

Something seems to be wrong with Lawndale Online, which has gone offline. Anyone know how to fix that?

Side Note: I will be away most of Thanksgiving at a family gathering, but I've programmed three or four posts for the day, some with sound! Enjoy.
