An Out-of-This World Birthday!

While we're on the subject of space travel, Jodie's wishing a happy birthday to Senator John H. Glenn, who was also among the very first astronauts! Glenn was born in 1921, and I'd just like to see Jodie try to beat his record for extracurricular activities.

Happy Presidents Day! Washington and Lincoln may be jerks on Holiday Island, but perhaps they're just grumpy because they have to share a holiday.

Today is also the 50th anniversary of Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, in which John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Not a bad trip, I'd say! You can talk about the mission at the PPMB, as well.

"From outer space to in your face!"

On this day in 1962, the Friendship 7 was launched. The pilot, John Glenn, became the first American and third person to orbit the Earth. Astronaut Jodie salutes him, although you've got to wonder about that smirk on her face. Either she just spotted some hot alien beefcake or she's relieved to have finally found a way to get away from her many extracurricular activities.

A Real Fireball

A bit of space news, to start the day: John H. Glenn, Jr., the former Senator, astronaut, and USMC fighter pilot, gets mentioned a few times in Daria fanfic (here and here) and was previously mentioned in this blog as well. Today is his 87th birthday. I am pleased to say that I watched him go into space both times! (On TV.)

One more day until the Wonderfest Dariacon takes place, with Richard Lobinske and myself appearing incognito in the crowd. Well, Richard's showing some models, so I'll be incognito.

Dramatic news to come, if there is any to report.

LATE ADD: S.C. has posted another masterwork on PPMB ("A Death in the Family"). Get a tissue box ready before you look at it. It is one of his best works, and that is saying something, but it will tear out your heart.

The History of Retirement by Rocket: Part 1

The world's first liquid-fuel rocket was launched 82 years ago today by American rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard, who later invented the bazooka. This act of genius set the stage for the first actual Retirement by Rocket spaceflight in 1998, when the Hon. John H. Glenn Jr. flew aboard the shuttle Discovery (STS-95) at the age of 77, becoming the oldest spacefarer on Earth. He retired from spaceflight thereafter. It is possible that his flight sparked the idea for the Sick, Sad World segment (aired in June 2001 on "Boxing Daria"), though some disagree.

The world's first liquid-fuel rocket launch site is now part of the ninth hole on a golf course in Auburn, Massachusetts. Maybe Daria and Jane played golf there in college.

I will add more Daria-related news to this post as soon as I can figure some out. I don't recall Daria and Jane launching model rockets in fanfic. Pity. There's some SF stuff, though.
