More Mulling, This Time on Words

Tiffany will continue the circus meme while other things are discussed.

Being a former editor, I love words. One came up as I was revamping the Daria Directory at left: supersite. The given definition seems too narrow, but others seem too broad. We expect a lot from our supersites (Outpost Daria, Glitter Berries, Lawndale Online, etc.). How would you define an Internet "supersite" in the context of our own little fandom?

Another word that could be applied to supersites in our fandom is vortal, or vertical portal. In our fandom we don't make any profit from our websites, since we don't own the core content (I sure don't make any money, but if I did it would ruin my hobby), but webmasters still "target a niche market of consumers" in exchange for a little fame and, dare I say it, popularity. This is also called niche blogging.

Alas, those who get too much into creating these websites risk being seen as having issues, but that does not stop anyone from trying.

Any thoughts on this of your own?

Heck, I don't know what defines a supersite, but all the sites you mentioned (and of course this one) are super as far as I'm concerned. And they are niche sites. Thing is, most niche sites don't really make much money. I do some affiliate marketing and in my Jobkiller alter-ego, I have a couple of blogs dedicated to this. One is a blogger blog at http://jobkiller.co.cc and the other is a Yuwie blog at http://www.yuwie.com/jobkiller
Most affiliate marketing blogs are deadly boring. I try to make mine a little more fun, though I can't say they're the most exciting writing by any means.
Oh yeah, the other niche that has a shot at making money is porn. I actually do XXX affiliate marketing in my Porn Baboon alter-ego. Not that I'm trying to peddle smut on this good wholesome PG type blog, but the front page of www.pornbaboon.biz is actually about a PG-13, if anyone cares about looking at a porn niche site--the difference being that this one is an affiliate directory.
Sadly, the statistic is that only 1% of all creative types will ever make money at it. I guess we have to remember that our souls are rich for doing something besides the old 9-5.
I really like this word verification. "Horsable." It would be interesting to speculate on what that could mean! Perhaps it could be used in a sentence such as "Quinn passed on the piece of fresh cherry pie that Helen offered her, fearing that consuming it would make her become horsable."

I have been assimilated by the Borg cube of text.

Oh, and my word verification this time is "flauta" and I'm pretty sure that's a real word that has something to do with intestinal gas. O_o

To me, a supersite is the definitive website on its topic -- it has a lot of relevant content, a large community, links to other sites about the topic (especially to niche-sites) and actively updates.

(I'd actually consider this here blog to be one of the most significant supersites in Daria fandom -- the only thing you don't have is fanfic and fanart archives).

I never thought of this blog as a supersite. To me, it's just a minor thing, some goofing off. This really is my only hobby. This is also why (in addition to not wanting to screw things up with MTV & Viacom by messing with their trademarked properties) I make no attempt to make money off this fooling around. It would completely change the direction of the blog and louse it up for everyone. Including me. I learned my lesson when I went to work for TSR and discovered that playing D&D was now work, not fun.

I should point out that messing with Viacom's trademarked properties means, to me, that I can safely play with the images, characters, etc., without profit and only as a fannish thing. If Viacom didn't like it, it would tell us to stop, and they haven't (except for that "foxing" of Outpost Daria, which was reversed). So, we're okay there. So far.

They know what "fair use" is. If this site isn't an example of it, with graphics merely illustrating reviews and commentary, I don't know what would be.

(I noticed that you copied my legal talisman from DFB One. That was hammered out from years of my doing so for several Websites. It seems to work.)
