Acidic Wit Without Parallel

Humorist H. L. Mencken, Daria's philosophical and spiritual ancestor, was born 128 years ago today. Even the briefest glance at a collection of his most famous sayings is enough to bring Daria to mind.

The 1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane thread has been reborn! Rejoice!

Legendeld is ranting again about fanfiction. Check it out.

More later, home sick today.

Without parallel, indeed. I've doted on Mencken for over 30 years. Apart from hilariously dissecting the corpse of American politics as no one has before or since — oh, how he'd have doted on the idiocies of this Summer! — he was one of the greatest prose stylists of the 20th Century.

Born in 1880, by the way (XX = 128), and passed in 1957, after several million well-chosen words. Say, when was Glenn Eichler born? {g}

Ah, Mencken's Puritanism quote (near the top of the linked page) was oft-touted by my English professor in college. A good quote, too.
