The Eccentric and the Queen

I don't think Tom/Howard Hughes is in any condition to recreate Howard Hughes's famous flight on the Spruce Goose on this day in 1947. Although, maybe if he trims those fingernails....

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of Marie Antoinette in 1755. Her story may have had a tragic end, but her legend will live on in--ahem--champagne glasses.

And if you live in the United States and haven't done so already, please VOTE tomorrow!

Dawn Looks Good in Orange!

Nothing like waiting until the last minute for Carve a Pumpkin Day, since Halloween is also today. Although going door-to-door during a pandemic might be a bad idea, so I suppose it's not like we have anything else to do today.

Today is also Girl Scouts Founders Day, so I hope Jane decides to celebrate with a round of John Jacob Jingleheimer Somebody.

Here, Kitty Kitty?

I don't think Jake should be celebrating National Cat Day like this, because if there's one thing I know about cats it's that they like their personal space. They're like Daria, only more likely to scratch your face off if you piss them off.

In fact, I recommend celebrating National Hermit Day instead. These days, we're all kind of celebrating our inner hermit. And no, Quinn, I did not say "Kermit."

  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (parts 10 and 11): "While Link ate his breakfast he texted with his friend, Brandon." (Part 11)

Once Upon a Time....

Daria's captivating her peers on National Tell a Story Day, and while she's got their attention I think she should offer them some of her updated fairy tales as well. Helen will be in shortly with another of her vampire stories...hopefully the G-rated version.

Today is also Navy Day, and I invite Mr. DeMartino to consider his options. He'd always dreamed of a life at sea, and even at his age active combat has got to be more appealing than dealing with Kevin and Brittany.

I Don't Think Even Cheerleaders Are Supposed to Bend Like That

Brittany's either trying out a radical new cheer or she's celebrating the anniversary of the birth of Pablo Picasso on this day in 1881. Honestly, as awkward as that looks it still seems less painful than the splits.

In fact, we should be celebrating more than just Picasso today, because it's International Artist's Day! Of course, if you ask Jane she'll tell you that every day is International Artist's Day. Just kidding--she'll tell you that it's yet another holiday manufactured by greeting companies to sell...art, I guess? I don't really know how it works.

If visual arts aren't your thing, you could also celebrate World Opera Day. I'll be attending the command performance of Madame Butterfly in the automotive department.

Make Them STOP!

Daria and Jane are smiling way too much for National TV Talk Show Host Day, but I'm sure that's only because the producer slipped something into their coffee. Daria's smile isn't too bad, but I'm getting "I baked these cookies for you" flashbacks from Jane.

Today is also the anniversary of the Fashion Club's cameo appearance on the webcomic Mall Monkeys on this day in 2002. I'm sure the girls were appalled to learn they were involved in something so...so...geeky.

Try Focusing Your NEGATIVE Energy This Time!

Jake, Helen, and their hippie friends are taking another shot at levitating the Pentagon in honor of the anniversary of the real life attempt to do the same on this day in 1967. I wish them every success, but advise Jake to avoid kicking any buildings this time around. I'm not sure his foot could take any more punishment.

Today is also the anniversary of the first Daria VHS tape, titled "Daria," in 1997. I know, what breaktaking creativity! The tape included the previously-unseen pilot, "Sealed With a Kick," so hooray for creepy smiles on low-quality media!

"Oh rapture, oh ecstasy--another scintillating computer game."

Twenty years ago today, the video game Daria's Inferno was released. Given the game's age, it would be difficult to play it today, but that's probably for the best. It had its fun moments, but those steam tunnels were the worst.

Today is also Evaluate Your Life Day, so why not take some advice from Jake Morgendorffer? "Then you walk away. You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!"

I Guess It Still Beats Frozen Lasagna

While Jake is right to celebrate National Pasta Day with a bowl of penne a la pesto, I think his technique needs a little work. Plus, I can tell from here that it's oxidizing.

Today is also one of the Fashion Club's least favorite holidays, Wear Something Gaudy Day. I can already hear Stacy freaking out that her outfit isn't quite gaudy enough.

Fanfic Update!
  • Brittany - Esteem of the Transfer Student, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Daria sighed as she followed Brittany, Kevin and Donna into the Pizza place. She took Brittany aside after they ordered the pizzas. 'Do you think you can tell Ms. Li that I’m fitting in?'"

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "'Of course I will, Doctor, there is no point in remaining in it!' Kellira said. She turned to the guards who were waiting for her near the door. 'Guards; March! Leave this Time Lord Timeship,' she ordered."

Students With Filthy Hands

The students of Lawndale High seem pretty underwhelmed that today is World Students' Day, but if you had to attend Lawndale High you'd be just as unenthusiastic. Maybe Mr. DeMartino will use the day to regain his love for teaching! (Spoiler alert: he will not.)

Can They Do Anything About 2020 in General?

Daria and Jane are so happy that today is International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction, because Kevin's mighty helmet of a head ended the big, wet rainstorm before it killed everyone in Lawndale! Yay! Although I'm not sure that's the approach the UN typically recommends.

Today is also potentially the anniversary of the earliest post on the Paperpusher's Message Board in 1999. Apparently the exact earliest date is not known, but I'm sure archaeologists are working nonstop to crack the mystery of that ancient time.

Fanfic Update!

Daria seems pretty grateful for International Newspaper Carrier Day, because without it how would she get her newspaper without having to leave her own house? Just imagine the horror of it!

Jake is clearly not off to a good start for Fire Prevention Day, but the good news is that he gets another nice, relaxing stay at a hotel. Right up until Quinn screws something up again. Which should be any minute.

Today is also the day Entertainment Weekly declared Daria a toon diva in 1998, a title she shared with Tinkerbell, Veronica, and...Foghorn Leghorn? You got me.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bringing Light to a Black Day, by Anonymous (COMPLETE!): "Daria had to give it up for her dad’s ineptitude when it came to home repairs; due to his attempts to increase the temperature on the hot water heater somehow breaking it completely, in spite of the fact that all he’d needed to do was turn one knob, she had the house all to herself until the plumber could get there the next day."

Mr. O'Neill wants everyone to know that today is the anniversary of the musical "Cats," which debuted on Broadway on this day in 1982. Between this and his stint as the Lawndale Lion in "I Loathe a Parade," I'm starting to wonder if Mr. O'Neill is secretly a furry. And, if so, what does Ms. Barch think of it?

Today is also International Walk to School Day, but in light of recent events this holiday may not be for everyone. Back in the Before Time, Daria and Jane walked to school every day, so I think they're pretty much covered.

Today is also World Teacher's Day, and I hope Mr. DeMartino in particular is having a good one. At the very least, I hope he doesn't have to put up with Kevin Thompson. Otherwise, would someone please get him his own jetpack?

Coffee and Cookies, Anyone?

Daria's happily celebrating International Coffee Day, unless that's cocoa she's drinking. I know which I'd prefer, anyway!

I have the perfect complement to that hot beverage, too, because today is also National Homemade Cookies Day! I hope no one in the Morgendorffer family takes the "homemade" part seriously, though, because Daria with cookies is creepy, Jake's a menace in the kitchen, and Helen gets thwarted by refrigerated cookie dough. Interestingly, Quinn might actually do a decent job. I mean, she did make a layer cake for Kevin and it looked okay.

Fanfic Update!
  • Boxing Quinn, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn's car was driving along in a thunderstorm. Inside, Quinn was crying as she drove through torrential rain at a speed that would be dangerous even in calm weather."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 51): "Jake Morgendorffer was in a very bad mood. Scolding the three thugs who had throw the water balloon at him was of little use ..."

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "The found Sabrina hunched over the console looking at the encryption of the Drahvin plan file with confusion..."

I'm not sure if DeMartino is more, less, or exactly as stressed as usual as Gene Autry for the singer/actor's birthday. Autry was born on this day in 1907, and I think Mr. D would have been happier as a singing cowboy, but then I think he'd have been happier in any other job, no exceptions.

Have an Easy Fast!

Rabbi Trent wishes "G'mar Tov" to all Jewish Daria fans for Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown tonight. There are a few fanon conventions that Jake and/or Tiffany is Jewish, but neither theory was ever confirmed on the show itself. Still, fanfic can always fill in the gaps!

Today also begins Banned Books Week, so please either read a controversial book or join Daria in yelling at the television. Hey, why not do both?

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "'This,' Daria thought as she approached her locker which Lawndale High's starting quarterback was currently slouching against. 'Is why I should never leave the house without my whistle?'"

  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 8): "'Unless someone’s given me gag binoculars,' Vixx announced. 'It looks like Jesse and Jane have broken away from the pack setting a bone rattling pace! They are neck and neck, looking like neither notices the other. I wonder what’s going through their minds.'"

  • Boxing Quinn, by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "It was late at night and five years old Quinn Morgendorffer was laying awake in her bed looking terrified. The source of her distress was the sound of her parents yelling in another room." (Part 2)

  • BroadcasTed (The Ted Zone), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Ted was still two blocks from the high school when he heard loud music and shouting. 'Oh, no!' he whispered in dismay. 'My parents told me if I went to public school it would be a slippery slope to substance abuse and music raves.' He sighed and trudged onward to the school. 'I might as well get my drug addiction over with.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by WacoKid (COMPLETE!): "'Daria, you have no idea how glad we all are that you've finally woken up from that 20 year coma,' Quinn said happily as she pushed her sister's wheel chair down the hospital hallway."

Today is Celebrate Bisexuality Day, and while the holiday and all bisexual people should be celebrated I really can't say the same for Alison herself. It's a shame that MTV turned the lone bi character on the entire Daria series into a predator, but the good news is that fanfic has given us plenty of positive bisexual characters to choose from. So...boo to Alison and yay for fanfic!

This is also Checkers Day, so while Tom sits down with his uncle to play yet another round, Kevin will stand nearby and yell "King me!" at Mack. (Yeah, I know the holiday doesn't actually relate to the board game, but I love that scene.)

Fanfic Update!
  • Another Night At Daria's, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jake's angry voice could be heard by the entire neighborhood. 'HOW DARE YOU VIOLATE MY DAUGHTER! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU, GODDAMMIT!!!'" (Part 3)

  • Daria Does the DCU, by Lady Evil (part 4): "Daria checked the address, 539 Kane Drive. The woman who lived here, she gave her name as Miriam Valenza, said she needed a babysitter for her daughter, Mary and insisted on Daria, which pissed off Quinn to no end."

  • Star Trek: Voyager: Q Junior's Lessons, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (prologue): "Q Junior pressed the announce button. 'Come in,' Captain Janeway said."

If that's not enough excitement, you could also celebrate National Dance Day, but I think Upchuck should put down any sharp objects before trying to join in. Jane will spend today thinking back fondly on her tribute to Jackson Pollack and the week she forgot to sleep.

Fanfic Update!
  • Another Night At Daria's, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "That's Amore Italian Restaurant is one of the most romantic restaurants in Lawndale. Inside, the decor includes murals of such romantic scenes as the canals of Venice, the streets of Rome, Cafe's in Naples and beaches in Sicily. The restaurant has an in-house band playing romantic music and a dance floor. Each table is decorated with a lit candle and a red rose in a jar. At one table Quinn and Jim were on a double-date with Daria and Link."

  • Doctor Who: Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "The Doctor and her companions were still behind the trees in the park as they watched foot soldiers march out of the Drahvin starship. Felicia was worried. 'What are we going to do?'"

  • The Tell-Tale Art, by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Jane bowed before some clients, but not this one, not Haldskyr Bear-grip. We also observe 911 Remembrance Day today, the anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon tragedies in 2001. The Angst Guy wrote his first fanfic, "Nine-Eleven and Counting," on the subject and I highly recommend it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Raiders of the Lost Arkngthand, by WellTemperedClavier (COMPLETE!): "Ash-tainted rain poured down from a sky the color of rust as Daria marched uphill, drawing her mom’s old woolen robe tighter around her. • The Show Must Go Off, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Things didn't get any better over the course of the next few weeks."

Also on this day in 1970, Vince Lombardi died of cancer. I have it on good authority (fine, Kevin. I have it from Kevin, okay?) that he definitely did not go to hell.

Of course, we wouldn't have Frankenstein without Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who was born on this day in 1797. Although the author never got mentioned on the show, we do know that Daria has read the book. What she thought of it is anyone's guess.

  • Growing Pains, by CaffeineAddict94 (part 1): "It was a Thursday afternoon in early September not unlike hundreds before it. Only, today, Daria was driven from the comfortable fortress of her room and forced to walk the streets."

  • Ninety-Nine to One, by Blake C Stacey (BlakeStacey) (part 6): "Daria's voice on the recording: 'I'm sorry for everything I said.'"

  • Paternoster Row, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (prologue): "The Paternoster Gang arrived home with Clara Oswald after the Doctor’s defeat of the Half Faced Man. 'You’re sure he’d come back here?' Jenny Flint asked."

Mmm...Poisoned Waffles!

It's National Waffle Day, but don't make the mistake Jake did! Check the date before you eat them, because the last thing you want is a breakfast of (hypothetically) poisoned waffles.

Today is also International Strange Music Day, so you could follow Trent's example and write unnaturally cheerful hell music. I'm sorry, I mean sell your soul for 20 bucks, an hour of free studio time, and a set of tires.

"Warming up to sing in that heavenly choir!"

Daria and Quinn aren't fooling anyone, even if today is Be an Angel Day. I mean, Daria doesn't even believe in angels, so what's she trying to pull?

While we're on the subject of small winged creatures that may or may not exist, today is also National Tooth Fairy Day! Poor Fantasy DeMartino (pre-Metal Mouth) lost all of his teeth and didn't even get any money under his pillow. No wonder he was so bitter!

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 5): "'What’s up, all you rockin’ rugrats?' Vixx started her show with her usual greeting. 'Not my boyfriend.' Daria quietly snarked as Trent snoozed next to her in his bed."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (COMPLETE!): "Erin had finished half of her pastry and was about to suggest they stroll the docks, when a large white van, with a square-rigged ship painted on the side, rumbled past the café window. 'It’s them,' Trevor cried as he hastily gathered his things."

  • Lovefool, by saiouma (COMPLETE!): "'I’ve been thinking about getting a haircut.' Daria brought up randomly, while glancing at a page of her latest book purchase."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Nathan), by welltemperedclavier (part 1): "As any artist knew, sometimes you just had to experience the familiar in a new context."

I Guess No One Wants a Free T-shirt

Bing and/or Spatula Man is trying his best to drum up some enthusiasm for National Radio Day, but he just can't get any takers. Maybe he should try making some rude jokes and annoying sound effects. On the other hand, if you'd like some quality radio-related entertainment, take a look at Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills's fanfic series "Free Radio Lawndale." SPreeeeeeeechreeeeeech!

"I'm here. But where are you?"

Andrea's about to favor us with a dramatic reading about rotting bags of flesh for Bad Poetry Day, and it's still a better choice than Quinn's greasy fry masterpiece. Poor Stacy is probably still giving her poems away for free.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Jane's Addition," which aired on this day in 1999. It was the beginning of the infamous Triangle, but we didn't know that at the time. In hindsight, we probably would have rather seen a repeat of that poem about fries instead.

Fanfic Update!
  • Applied Statistics, by abe (part 1): "'Dammit!' Jane exclaimed as she slammed the door behind her, 'I know I always ridiculed that idea of predestined soul mates that Maria kept babbling on about, but right about now I'm starting to wish that they really did exist!'"

  • Doctor Who: Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Felicia Lovell entered the Console Room, where the Doctor and her other companions were. They were observing the TARDIS's progress through the vortex. For what seemed to be two to three months, the TARDIS had been going off course."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 43): "Erin woke slowly. Her hip pressed through the foam mattress onto the boards below. The light blanket cocooned her. The room was warm and the air suffused with the miasma of bodies. She did not want to wake, sleep felt comforting."

  • Vulnerable - HurtComfort - Daria Fanfiction, by QueerPhilosopher (COMPLETE!): "Daria opened her eyes reluctantly and listened to the dreary patter of rain outside. She scanned her room with bleary eyes; still adjusting to her new bedroom."

There's Nothing To It!

Helen is striking a "vogue" post in honor of Madonna's birthday on this day in 1958. For more Daria/Madonna fun, see Kem's The Ten Faces Of Madonna alter ego collection.

Today is also National Tell a Joke Day, but please warn Jake ahead of time if you tell him one. He...doesn't always notice on his own.

Tiffany a Filmmaker? She Wouldn't Even Know Which End of the Camera to Point!

Here we see Tiffany portraying director/screenwriter Lina Wertmüller, who was born on this day in 1928. I seriously doubt Tiffany even knows who that is, although I imagine that's true of a lot of people, so she shouldn't feel too bad. I mean, not about that, anyway.

Today is also a birthday that Jane will not be celebrating: Max Klein, inventor of paint by number kits. According to the Daria Diaries, Jane "believes paint-by-number kits are inherently evil." I guess you can't argue with that kind of conviction.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (parts 3 and 4): "Dear Grandma Ruth, Thank you very much for the gift card for Manfred Flowers. It was very thoughtful. I will give your suggestion on how to use it all the thought it deserves. Love, Daria" (Part 4)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 35): "It snowed a few days before Thanksgiving, coating the Castle and grounds in white. If this was back in the States, it would be real Currier and Ives, thought Daria."

  • Glass Shouldn't Be This Intimate, by deusyang (COMPLETE!): "The two girls stood in Jane’s kitchen. Jane was rummaging through cabinets, looking for anything ceramic she could use for an art project."

  • Is It 20th Year Reunion Yet? (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'...and I'll be opening up a second casino in Atlantic City within two years!' Jodie said, grinning into the camera on her end of the virtual reunion."

  • Tasteful Repression, by sarcasticsponge (part 1): "'The agents both laughed and preceded to join the rest of the party' Fifteen-year old Daria Morgendorffer said while finishing her latest chapter of her story blog."

Brothers and Headlocks: the Perfect Combination

Sam Griffin is clearly having a great time on Middle Child's Day, although Chris is...not so much. This day should also be celebrated by Trent, Wind, and Penny Lane, Rachel Landon, and either Rita or Helen depending on the theory you subscribe to.

In fact, all the kids of Lawndale should be celebrating because today is International Youth Day. I suppose Sam is already celebrating, but hopefully the others will choose a less violent way to enjoy their day.

How Toasty Do You Like Your Marshmallows?

Helen's taking National S'mores Day to a bit of an extreme, but maybe she likes hers extra crispy. Whether you use a campfire, a microwave, or just breathe fire, enjoy a sweet treat of your own...but don't work too hard at it--today is also Lazy Day. Take a page out of Daria's fantasy versions of Jake and Helen and "just kick back and chill."

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 2): "'Guess who's back, guess who's back? Guess who's back? Wooo!' Link sang, swinging his soda cup around."

  • Esteem of the Transfer Student, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Brittany Taylor arrived at Lawndale High as she usually did, with her stepmother, Ashley-Amber dropping her off."

Send in the Goths

Andrea's tapping into some unknown talents to celebrate National Clown Day, and I did not expect her to be into this one. Then again, so little is actually known about Andrea that I couldn't say anything about her with any real certainty.

Today is also International Cat Day, so give Mr. Whiskers a little extra love today. Unless you're Jake, in which case stay the hell away from Mr. Whiskers for your own safety!

Forget Fame; Daria Wants Her Fifteen Minutes of Obscurity

Daria's trying her hand at some pop art in honor of Andy Warhol's birth on this day in 1928, and I think Jane would approve. I don't think the Fashion Club would approve, though. I mean, look at that hair! And the oufit! Ewwwwwww!!

Today is also National Root Beer Float Day, so join Jake in trading in that root beer in a frosty cold can for a root beer in a frosty cold mug with ice cream!

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by Backseat for No One (part 11): "That Sunday in the late afternoon after watching Brittany tightly hug her sister Daria reproduced on her bed the supine posture she had assumed on top of a park bench."

You Know What, Helen? I Actually DO Like My Cookies Undercooked!

I think we're going to be having a sweet snack for National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, but with Rita and Helen in charge I wouldn't get my hopes up. Still, I'd rather leave it up to them than let Daria and her way-too-creepy smile get involved.

Speaking of creepy, it was on this day in 1999 that the episode "The Lawndale File" first aired. Daria and Jane found out that there were no aliens lurking around Lawndale, but there wasn't any intelligent life amongst its human occupants, either.

Ride the Roller Coaster of Friendship

Let's all relive the moment when Daria met her soon-to-be best friend in honor of National Friendship Day! Awww, what a sweet holiday and a very heartwarming moment.

Now...let's remember that today is also the anniversary of the episode "Dye! Dye! My Darling" in 2000. Daria takes that friendship and just sends it right through the shredder. Not so sweet, and not so heartwarming.

Fortunately for Daria, today is also International Forgiveness Day. Unfortunately, Jane doesn't go in for those manufactured holidays. Oops. This has been a post full of ups and downs, hasn't it?

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 10): "As Brittany drove away from Schloss Morgendorffer, Quinn turned around in the Mustang's bucket seat to watch her sister watching them drive off."

  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'Dana! Hurry up with that coffee!' 'It’s brewing now, sir.' Daria never cared to learn the names of her interchangeable co-workers so she just called all of them sir. It wasn’t like they bothered to learn her name either."

  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 8): "A lot had changed over the past few months for Kevin in ways he'd never thought possible in the past."
