Daria — Jane = ?
What if Jane had not been around when Daria and her family came to Lawndale? The question isn't entirely academic; Richard Lobinske reminds us in the John Lane series of the ever-present possibility of the repossession of the Lane home, and John's (Jane's) placement in a county or state facility for abandoned children (assuming Trent wasn't in when the officials came calling). Jane's life was precarious, and survivor though she was, her luck wasn't guaranteed.
What would Daria's high-school years have been like, then? Would she have made another close friend? Would she isolate herself in her room, talking to herself (per "See Jane Run") and biting her nails (Is It Fall Yet?), rarely going out except to Bigfoot and UFO conventions? Would she have found a way out of the self-esteem class sooner or later? Would she always be an outcast thereafter?
Few fanfics have looked at this possibility (one was "Jane on the Side"), but was this the only way it could have gone?

I don't think Daria would act much like she did in those episodes, after all, she didn't in the first one. Maybe she would end up being friends with Jodie? That would probably lead to a more active life I think. Or maybe she would be content with spendings the afternoons in Self-Esteem class because 'it makes her feel special'. It could also make a stronger Amelia 'friendship?'.
I think, maybe Jane would get the shorter end of the stick without Daria.
