The Man Who Gave Us Bebop

Although the MTV website did not identify this alter ego as such, this is Mack Mackenzie posing as famed jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. (I thought that bent trumpet looked familiar.) Today is the 91st anniversary of Dizzy's birthday. Play some bebop jazz to celebrate.

This is also the 79th birthday of world-famous SF/fantasy writer Ursula K. Le Guin, who is quoted at the start of this fanfic. I read loads of her stuff when I was younger. Maybe Daria did, too.

This is also Apple Day. No, really. Look it up. This is the Holiday Island High kid who thinks he/she was cheated out of a better holiday theme by everyone else (i.e., Apple Day has become a "bad apple.")

Remember the jazz.

I'm pulling out the record albums* now. In my house today, all day, the jazz will play....

*Trent was right, it IS the warmth of vinyl....

Absolutely. Nothing matches a great vinyl record (and not just because you can find so many great albums on used vinyl for cheap).

I used to listen to jazz a lot about 20 years ago on radio stations. None of them play jazz now. I was thinking of listening to some on the Internet to find some groups I like and maybe get some CDs. Are there some online radio stations with jazz? Good stations? It appears I will be home for a while with little to do.

I highly recommend pandora.com . Just type in the name of an artist (or song) that you like, and it will assemble a radio station made of up artists like the one you named. It has lots of obscure artists, so it's a great way to discover music you haven't heard, as well as hear stuff you know and like.

Let's see, there's KKJZ in Long Beach. Go here: http://www.jazzandblues.org/programming/listen/

For Old timey stuff (1920's1930's), go here:

There's also Jazz Radio 247:

There are many more, but this should be a good start.

Thank you. I have my earphones with me so that should help pass the time a lot!
