Without parallel, indeed. I've doted on Mencken for over 30 years. Apart from hilariously dissecting the corpse of American politics as no one has before or since — oh, how he'd have doted on the idiocies of this Summer! — he was one of the greatest prose stylists of the 20th Century.
Born in 1880, by the way (XX = 128), and passed in 1957, after several million well-chosen words. Say, when was Glenn Eichler born? {g}
Ah, Mencken's Puritanism quote (near the top of the linked page) was oft-touted by my English professor in college. A good quote, too.
